The Bridge August 2016

August in the Forest

The summer is the best time to be in the English countryside, to my way of thinking, and, much as I love the seaside, I like to be at home in August. My worries about the numbers of insects have been put aside since I assume that the House Martins and Swallows must be pursuing something above the house and hay meadow. The Buddleia is coming into flower and I will soon see a variety of butterflies enjoying its abundant nectar. Southern Hawker and Broad-bodied Libellula dragonflies are haunting the pond, while blue damselflies lay their eggs on the pond weed, firmly paired.

In the Anglo-Saxon calendar the feast of Lammas was held in August. This is the earliest beginning of the wheat harvest and a loaf of wheat was brought into church as an offering. ‘Lammas land’ is traditional hay meadow, closed to grazing animals until after the hay is cut in summer but opened up on Lammas Day. I have seen the day most often mentioned as 1st/2nd August but also as 12th/13th August: perhaps you can help me there. The harvest in the forest is of bilberries, blackberries and many seeds which feed insects, small mammals and birds. The oaks salute Lammas by producing a flush of new summer shoots, usually reddish in colour, which replace leaves eaten to shreds by millions of hungry invertebrates and their young. Hazel trees are already being raided for nuts still green, leaving few to ripen to our tastes or that of the dormouse.

An Introduction to Green Woodworking in the Wyre Forest over the weekend of 19th to 21st August is just what it says. Starting with the selection of green oak and ash and using tools such as draw knives, froes and axes, a timber frame stool will be constructed then the seat will be woven from sea grass or elm bark. Fiona de Wert and Amy Cox will be the tutors and the cost of £180 will cover all materials, homemade lunch, teas and coffees. Please email events@wyreclt.org.uk or call 01299 488083 for details and bookings. There is also an Introduction to Basket Making on 3rd and 4th September – see www.wyreclt.org.uk for details.

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk

Welcome to August’s edition of The Bridge. The magazine has long had a role of celebrating what is going on in Bewdley, promoting events and activities often organised by enthusiastic volunteers who want the best for their town. This month is no exception.

We’re pleased, once again, to bring you Bewdley Festival’s programme in our centre pages and look forward to another action packed week for both residents and visitors. Bridge music correspondent, Alastair Elliott previews some of the acts on offer, including a new Sunday afternoon event planned with families in mind. Turn to page 25 to find out more and discover why he is so enthusiastic about Hopfest and Music in the Hall, both events that often provide a platform for our local talented young musicians to play on the same stage as seasoned professionals. And following the success of last year’s event, see what Bewdley Book Week 2016 is offering on page 23.

The Severn Valley Railway is another one of Bewdley’s big success stories. Turn to page 19 to read about the three sales carriages at the station that support restoration work and find out how you can see the work on historic wagons for yourself. There’s also a model railway!

August brings us Bewdley Horticultural Society’s Annual Show with the chance to enjoy beautiful displays of produce grown by the town’s keen gardeners. See page 21 for details of all that is on offer at the show as well as what is going on at this year’s Button Oak Fete. Despite the weather, Bewdley Carnival Committee again delivered a great family day out this year but would love more help for the event to continue. Read more on page 27. Page 31 brings news of a charity quiz and details of a free heart test for young people organised by the family and friends of a Bewdley teenager who died unexpectedly twenty years ago. They are an inspiration in their work to help protect other young people, determined to create something postive from the worst tragedy. Enjoy August, however you celebrate the best of Bewdley. Gill

Did you know? Methodists believe that racism is a denial of the Gospel and that to stay silent is to collude with those who seek to promote hatred and division. We are called to challenge racism and discrimination and to love all.

Do you need to hire a meeting room?

Then Bewdley Baptist Church may have just what you need.We have several light, warm, well furnished rooms in the Church building (all on the ground floor) which we can rent out for one off or regular bookings. There is an adjoining well equipped kitchen.

The Cottage (left) fronts the High Street and is at the entrance to the Church. It has been recently renovated to a high standard with disabled access, toilet and kitchen. St. Anne’s Church roof

St Anne’s is a historic Georgian grade II* listed church built in the 18th century. Robert Kilgour Architects Ltd of Bewdley, who specialise in cathedral and church conservation work, have identified that work is urgently required to the roof and ceiling to ensure that the church is watertight and weatherproof.

This includes: renewal of roof tiles and parapet level valley guttering; high level masonry renewals including the ballastrades at high level right around the church; rainwater hopper renewals at high level; improved roof insulation; interior ceiling repair work. The cost has been estimated by Stenning & Co, Quantity Surveyors, at £181,488 including professional fees and VAT. We have been funded by a grant of £100,000 from the Government's Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund and approximately £30,000 from the Government's Listed Places of Worship VAT Reclaim Scheme. Generous donations from charitable trusts have totalled over £42,000. Bewdley Town Council has contributed £1,000, leaving the Parochial Church Council to fund the balance. Scaffolding is necessary whilst the work is underway to protect pedestrians and vehicles below. We are sorry that this involves partial closure of Load Street. We have worked closely with the Highway Authority and Bewdley Town Council to ensure that inconvenience for local residents and businesses is minimised.

The work will be complete in September 2016. The church is open during the works. Please come inside.

Now is the time to say Goodbye

"History never really says goodbye. History says 'See you later'." Bewdley Library Eduardo Galeano By the time this edition of the Bridge hits the press we shall have been closed for almost a week and in the thick of our move across to our new home in the medical centre building, hopefully to reopen again on Monday August 8th.

I've decided to mark the occasion by listing some 'Top Threes' of the ten years I have spent in the outgoing library… Top Three Things left behind in the library: A bag of grated cheese A traditional broomstick (I must be more careful next time) A half-eaten pork pie (under the young people's computer) Top three most bizarre returns ever: Over a period of time, several Marmite smeared Talking Books on CD A holiday read covered in sand which had obviously been used in a game of beach volleyball A copy of the Kama Sutra (which we didn't actually have in the first place)

Top Three things we have been asked to deal with: A goat wandering along the railway track Finding old playmates from the town in the 1940's Finding books when people have no idea what the title is, who wrote it, or indeed what the book is actually about (true)

Change makes everyone a little uncertain as we are happy with the familiar and resistant to the idea of altering it. It is also an opportunity for growth and development.

We hope that you will bear with us whilst we settle into our new home and take the next step forward for Library Services in Bewdley. All books borrowed before the 25th July will have an extended loan period to cover the move. Don't forget to come and see us again! Bewdley Library Staff

Bewdley Station

Bewdley Railway Station is a well-known landmark in the town with its frequent trains traversing the route between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth for tourists and locals. Recent work at the station has seen the restoration of the island platform canopy and Great Western Railway spear top fencing and gate pillars to the bottom of the drive.

Readers may not be aware of three sales carriages parked in the station yard that have been there for some years and are manned by volunteers. These raise funds for restoration work at the station. The Station Fund Shop can be found in Great Western Milk Brake 1399 from 1921, opposite the Refreshment Room. The Great Western (SVR) Association’s shop is located in Great Western Full Brake 1145 from 1922. It raises funds for the restoration of its Great Western Carriages and also includes the Station’s model railway. The Erlestoke Manor Fund shop is alongside 1145 in the ‘Cattle Dock’ in British Railways GUV 86105 from 1958; raising money towards the upkeep of its two Great Western Manor Class locomotives. The shops are usually open from 10am to 5pm on weekends and Bank Holidays although 1145 is also open on Wednesdays when trains are running. They stock a wide range of new and quality second hand goods. Donations of stock to sell are welcome.

Visitors are usually welcome to view the restoration underway on the historic wagons, carriages (including the GW (SVR) A’s current project, 6045 Bow-ended Composite of 1928). Please contact the volunteer at the shops or on the station. Knoll School Rowing to Rio

Bewdley Rowing Club recently welcomed pupils from Years 5 and 6 at the Knoll School in Kidderminster for a taste of 'Olympic-style' training. Each pupil had individual tuition from Jon Hinton, our resident expert from the Rowing Club. Most discovered that it wasn't as easy as it looks! Divided into groups of 6, all rowing at the same time, the children had 3 goes, each of which was 5 minutes long. In that time most managed over 2000m, the furthest distance of 2893m being achieved by Jamie Pinchbeck in Year 5.Â

The Rowing Club is hoping to run a summer course for this age group to learn to row on the water. Anyone who is interested in coxing (steering a boat rowed by other people), please come and see us at BRC.

Saturday 27th August 10.00am until 4.00pm

The usual selection of good quality items will be for sale including many toys and children's books. Alongside these stalls will be our 'coffee shop' selling hot drinks and our delicious home made cakes which are very popular with our regular 'customers'.

All proceeds will be donated to our chosen charity, hope and kindness.org. You will find us next to the farm shop in Dog Lane, Bewdley.

Bewdley Book Week 2016...

.......starts on September 5th and promises to be the best yet. Tickets are on sale now.

We’re especially pleased that internationally acclaimed novelist Louis DeBernières joins us on the Friday night. He will perform poetry and read from his latest novel. Louis will also play the mandolin alongside The Bookshop Band, gifted musicians with a unique sound. It’s going to be an informal and stimulating evening with a licensed bar.

On the Saturday we repeat the popular ‘tea and cake’ afternoon, this time with bestselling romantic novelist Carole Matthews. Carole is best known for her Chocolate Lovers' Club series of books that have sold all over the world. Carole will be joined on stage by Heart FM’s Rachel New.

In response to your requests for more poetry, this year we have a Poetry Day. We hope you’ll come along to see nationally recognised poets, Rob Barratt and Emma Purshouse, in the afternoon (a discounted ticket for both performances is available) and join the free Poetry Open-Mic at the Cock and Magpie in the evening.

The full programme includes: one of the country’s leading translators of Nordic Noir; the founder of The Cottage Herbery in Tenbury Wells; BBC Countryfile’s Farming Hero of 2015; the leader of a band that had nine UK top ten singles; a historian talking about an English king who died 1000 years ago; and an internationally recognised DNA evidence expert witness.

We also have established favourites: Film of the Book Night and the fun Literary Quiz at the The Hop Pole Inn.

Look out for our programme in the centre pages of the Bewdley Festival brochure. Our leaflets are in the Tourist Information Centre where you can buy tickets. You can also buy on-line at www.bewdleybookweek.org.uk. See you in September!

Behind the Baton

Community News

Summer brings Festival season to every part of the UK and Bewdley is no exception with the Hopfest enjoying another successful year. It’s the first year I’ve been to Hopfest and I can now claim to have “played” my first Festival with a slot for a choir adding to the eclectic mix of music and spoken word the Festival offers.

Highlights were Alisha Green - reigning Wyre Forest Young Musician of the Year who played a great set on the Friday night; Granny’s Attic – a very vibrant young folk group whose energy and great close harmony singing really whipped up the mood on the Saturday afternoon and Arcadia Roots who packed out the main Marquee stage and delivered another high octane set led by the brilliant Dave Small. The headline act on the main stage outside was Cantaloupe whose mix of Funk, RnB and Jazz kept the lively crowd thrilled for nearly an hour. The atmosphere throughout the Festival was brilliant with people of all ages mixing together in a very safe and friendly environment.

I also managed to get to Music in the Hall for the first time this year and was lucky enough to catch the brilliant Lynne Hanson and the Good Intentions – another one of the Stateside artists to play there. The series goes from strength to strength so make sure you arrive early for Remi Harris on the 5th August for what should be another great night.

Talking of Festivals, you’ll see the full programme for this year’s Bewdley Festival in the centre of the Bridge this month. As ever, we have great musical events to look forward to starting with The Rutles on the opening night. Born out of the comedy genius of Eric Idle and Neil Innes, the band’s pastiche of the Beatles on their current Tragical History Tour will be hugely entertaining and musically brilliant with an all-star line-up featuring Innes and much of the original group.

On Saturday, the pace will ease a little with actress Anne Reid bringing her personal cabaret evening to the Festival. Accompanied by her Musical Director Jason Carr on our local Steinway, this should be a most enjoyable and light hearted evening.

The Steinway will be put to good use again on Sunday with two very contrasting classical concerts. In the afternoon, in a family oriented event, Ashley Wass (who famously stepped in for Andrei Gavrilov at the last minute 2 years ago) is back with his friend the acclaimed British violinist Matthew Trusler for a new work entitled Wonderland featuring new compositions by some of the UK’s most eminent composers. Ashley is then going to stay with us for a very exciting recital featuring music themed on Shakespeare including Beethoven, Liszt and Prokofiev.

On Thursday night, the singer songwriter Judie Tzuke brings her acclaimed acoustic show to the Festival with a back catalogue over 30 years; this should be one of those “atmospheric” evenings Festival audiences enjoy so much.

Finally, the Festival Church Service on the Sunday will contain lots of great music performed by local schools and the Festival’s own Festival Voices Choir and the World Premiere of a new song written by Passion Play composer Jim Ineson. All in all, another music filled week to look forward to.

Bewdley Carnival

Community News

Saturday 11th June saw Bewdley enjoy its annual Carnival. Thousands of people flocked into the town to celebrate and we were so lucky that the weather stayed dry and warm for the day’s celebrations. This year’s princesses - Maisie Allen, Grace Darby, Scarlett Hodges and Lola Dyoss Jones - led the Carnival parade, waving and smiling, through the town and along to the parade field followed by princesses from previous years. Entertainment on the field was fantastic. Main attraction Andrew Van Burren amazed the crowds with a variety of illusions, magic, escapology and circus skills. Also on the field were HCW Wrestling, samba percussion group Glamba, Severnside School of Dancing, Bewdley Concert Band, West Midlands Tae Kwon Do, Animal Man Simon Airey, a woodcarver and sixty stalls, a fun fair, face painting and bouncy castles. Winning floats in the parade were: Decorated - Noah’s Ark Playgroup; Vintage and Classic Cars - Adam Fradgeley with a 1987 Porche G11; Youth - Severnside School of Dance with Back to the Sixties; Sports and Socials Clubs - Bewdley Rowing Club; Private, Charity and Commerce - Bewdley Floral Art.

The shop windows of Bewdley were wonderful and more shops and pubs than ever decorated their windows for the event. Kemp Hospice Shop was judged to be the winner, with Vanilla and Cheap and Cheerful in second and third places.

Bewdley Carnival Committee would like to thank all the people that helped put on this year’s Carnival. A prize bingo evening raised £310 towards next year’s carnival thanks to Bewdley’s generous traders who donated prizes. The Carnival Committee consists of only eight people and we are desperate for more people to become involved. Help is needed both with the arrangements starting now for next year’s event and on the actual carnival day itself. If you could spare some time to help us with our advance planning or think you may be able to help on Carnival Day, please come along to our next meeting at Bewdley Bowling Club on Wednesday 3rd August at 7.30 or ring Sue on 01299 401841 33

Bewdley Museum and Tourist Information Centre

After much planning and preparation, the ‘ONE GRAIN’ Brass Foundry project finally came to fruition. During the month of July, visitors of all ages came along to meet renowned artist Joshua Sofaer, plus specially invited experts, museum staff and volunteer researchers in the research room. The Arts Council funded project also involved local schools and groups; engaging audiences who may not have visited the Museum before. Even for those people who were already familiar with the Museum, there was the opportunity to participate in a unique and exciting experience. The ‘ONE GRAIN’ brass apothecary weight, which was made in the Foundry, was only the starting point of the research which branched out in many directions. Many participants brought in fascinating artefacts related to the themes. The research room is now closed so that the findings and artefacts can be gathered together to form a permanent exhibition in the Brass Foundry. Thanks to Liz Cowley, Sharon Harvey, Joshua and the many other people who made it all so successful.

Throughout the month of August, there will be themed children’s craft activities in the Sawyard area. These will be on offer every weekday from 11am to 3pm for a small charge of £4 per child; all children must be accompanied by an adult. It isn’t necessary to book in advance. The temporary exhibitions for this month include Geology at different scales by textile artist Georgia Jacobs and Tower to Town which features objects and stories from Bewdley townspeople who bought a poppy for the Tower of London WW1 Centenary installation. More information about Museum activities can be found on our website: www.bewdleymuseum.co.uk or phone 0845 603 5699.

The TIC Shop now offers a wider selection of maps, books, local produce and gifts. Please come along and browse; staff are here to help and advise. Remember that discounted tickets are available for West Midlands Safari Park and Severn Valley Railway.

For enquiries and information, please refer to the website www.visitwyreforest.co.uk or phone 0845 607 7819.

Support offered for young people

A local children’s charity offering regular one to one social and emotional support to distressed children in the Wyre Forest is asking the local community two questions:

Do you know children and young people that need low level support for anxiety and stress, but you cannot find anyone to provide this level of support?

Do you know children that fail to reach the criteria for other support services, but would really benefit from long term social and emotional support?

If you answer yes to either of the above questions, Mentor Link will be able to help you.

We are a local children’s charity that operates in your area providing long term one to one social and emotional support to vulnerable and distressed children from a professionally recruited mentor. Our aim is to improve their self-esteem and engagement in learning and over our 14 year history we have gained an excellent reputation of success in achieving positive outcomes for children and young people.

Children like Jack who is 15 years old and is hearing voices and presenting with mental health problems. He has been referred for specialist mental health support three times and has been turned down for help. Jack was referred for mentoring by his school as his teacher recognised that he needed support as the difficulties he faced were impacting on his learning. Mentor Link matched Jack with his mentor who has worked in mental health for several years and is there for him each week in school. After one month of mentoring support, Jack came out of the room with a smile saying his mentor “is the person he trusts most in the world and understands him better than anyone else.”

For more information on the charity please call our Head Office on 01299 822336 or enquiries@mentorlink.org.uk www.mentorlink.org.uk.

Friends of Bewdley Museum Tales from the Air Raid Shelter

In 1940 the Ministry of Defence constructed an air raid shelter in the back garden of Bewdley’s Post Office - now Kemp Hospice charity shop - for its workers and their families.

It was rediscovered in the 1970s, when the museum was being set up, and has been a highly popular visitor attraction ever since.

It is a unique shelter - bigger than an Anderson shelter that people used at the bottom of their gardens - and could hold about fifteen adults. It had many interesting features, including electricity, at a time when candles were the order of the day, and a telephone line which serviced the P.O. during a raid and was sheathed in concrete. There was an escape hatch as well as a blast proof door but no heating or toilet. There is almost certainly not another of its type anywhere in the county or beyond.

The many hundreds of visitors who duck low to get into the shelter are often surprised at its size and facilities. Many let us know that they still have an old shelter at the bottom of their garden which is used to hold all sorts of things including bikes, coal, potatoes and even pigs. The many and varied recollections from visitors from all over the country and overseas are often poignant, sad and sometimes desperately tragic as well as heart-warming and humorous. Here are but a few:

“... a lady was carrying her new baby in a washing basket down to the shelter during a raid when an ARP warden put his helmet over its head. There was a loud explosion and a piece of shrapnel hit the helmet. The baby survived.”

“ .. as a young boy I remember the embarrassment of rushing into the shelter with no trousers on .” “... mother wallpapered our shelter to make it more homely.”

“... A Bewdley fireman went eight days without sleep whilst on duty. He had to have an injection to put him to sleep.”

“... the gas attack rattle (we have one in the shelter) was called ‘mother-in-law’s tongue’ because it rattled on and on and on.”

“... a man left his family in the shelter during a lull in the bombing to go to the house to make some cocoa. A bomb fell on the shelter and his family were all killed.”

These stories remind us that although Bewdley was never bombed in WW2, its people were not so very far away from the action.

If you want to find out more about this fascinating feature of Bewdley Museum why not visit us. In order to open the air raid shelter to visitors, the Friends of Bewdley Museum rely on a team of volunteers. We would welcome anyone interested in joining our loyal team. Dressing for the part is welcomed but not essential. Please get in touch if you would like to join the Friends as a member or volunteer. info@bewdleymuseum.org.uk. 43

Fund raising walk for KEMP Sunday 18th September

KEMP Hospice in Kidderminster has joined forces with Compton Hospice in Wolverhampton to offer a 20 mile and an 8 mile fund raising walk on Sunday 18th September. A similar event organised in 2010 by the Mid-counties Co-op saw 240 walkers raise over £25,000 for both hospices. The 20 mile walk starts at The Lock Inn Public House,Wolverley, and the 8 mile walk begins at the Round Oak Pub in Wombourne, both finishing for refreshments at Compton Hospice. Transport is provided back to the start. Registration is just £15.00 per person and can be done at www.kemphospice.org.uk or on 01562 756077. Registration forms are also available from Bewdley’s KEMP retail shop or the Hospice reception. If you are unable to participate in the walk itself but still would like to support, there are a number of volunteering roles available on the day. For more information please contact Shelley Stanley, Event Fundraiser on shelley.stanley@kemphospice.org.uk. With your support we can raise valuable funds to help people in the Wyre Forest who are living with the difficulties of a life limiting illness, as well as adults and children coping with bereavement and loss of a loved one. Last year we supported 850 people and with your help this year, we will support 1,000 people in our community when it matters the most, so thank you. Remembering the Battle of the Somme

On the 1st July at 7.30 am a wreath was laid at the town centre War Memorial by the Bewdley Branch of the Royal British Legion in remembrance of the Battle of the Somme which started 100 years ago at that exact time. Later, at midday, another wreath was laid at the Wribbenhall War Memorial by members followed by a two minute silence. Branch members and Peter Preece from Button Oak laying a wreath.

Rock Pound the Bounds 1st May 2016

The 16th Rock Pound the Bounds event raised a record-breaking £6000 for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. A total of 473 walkers covered 5022 miles between them on a variety of routes.

Participants included cross-country runners testing themselves running the long distances, 13, 18 or 26 miles, to more relaxed walkers taking in the scenery with stops at places on the shorter routes. All contributed to the atmosphere of the day.

The organisers are grateful to all 50 volunteers working so hard in the village hall, taking care of registration and at the four marshalling points; the land-owners for their co-operation; the WI for running the cafe; the commercial sponsors for their donations for ads on the certificate; Midlands Air Ambulance for their increasing share in the publicity organisation and of course to all walkers, some from far afield, for taking part. Next year’s event is planned for Sunday 30th April. 43

Bewdley Local Produce Market handover to Town Council

Bewdley DevelopmentTrust (BDT) was set up in 2002, initially as Opportunity Bewdley, to benefit the communities of Bewdley, Wribbenhall, Ribbesford, Rock and Arley. As a Community Interest Company it has used its profits and assets for the good of the community and has been run by a Board of unpaid volunteers. There’s no doubt that leading on the refurbishment of St. George’s Hall has been BDT’s proudest and most significant achievement. BDT has also made big contributions to Bewdley communities through, for example, Bewdley’s Local Produce Market, the Bewdley website, its newsletter on activities and events in Bewdley and the Spring and Harvest Fairs.

In all cases, BDT identified a gap in local provision, and found a way to address it, with the help of our brilliant volunteers and working with our local partners. These partners include Bewdley Town Council, Wyre Forest District Council, Bewdley Museum, Bewdley Festival, Bewdley Bike Week, Wyre Forest Landscape Partnership and Transition Bewdley.

BDT has explored a number of options for securing a long-term income that would enable it to continue to develop assets and profits for the good of the community but, so far, none has been found. BDT is concerned, therefore, that its position could present a risk to the continuation of the activities it currently provides. BDT is keen to ensure that these successful activities can continue, under the most appropriate management.

BDT has therefore made arrangements with Bewdley Town Council for it to run the Local Produce Market from August 2016. The Town Council is already working with a commercial partner to operate a vintage market, and BDT believes it makes sense for a single body to co-ordinate these markets. The Town Council will also expand its new website to provide a single web location for all information about Bewdley events and activities.

The Harvest Fair this October will take place with the support and involvement of our partners, including the Museum, Town Council and the Civic Society, and promises to be as good as ever.

BDT’s Board will remain in place and will continue to look for resources and opportunities to benefit our communities. As ever, BDT will do what it can to benefit Bewdley.

Jacky Griffin, Chairman of BDT said “BDT is proud of its many achievements in support of Bewdley communities, particularly the refurbishment of St. George’s Hall. We are pleased to have worked in partnership with many Bewdley organisations to initiate and develop enterprises for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors. The Directors are delighted that through the support of these partners our current activities in the town will continue.” 45

Partners involved in Team Wyre Forest work together, trust each other, help each other, share information and enjoy working in partnership. Their aim is to deliver the mission statement for the three town centres of the district of Wyre Forest (Bewdley, Kidderminster and Stourport-on-Severn), reduce incidents that threaten that goal and always look to the future, whilst remembering the past.
