OUR CLASSES ARE FOR EVERYONE!

Many of our classes are held at the Beverly Senior Center, but you don’t need to be a senior citizen or a Beverly resident to participate.

BEVERLY INFORMATION A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR Another Crazy Winter! Record high temperatures in February made it seem like summer was almost here. March was a much different story with cold, snow and a series of storms never seen before, several doing significant damage at Lynch Park, Dane Street Beach, and several other parks. The weather has started to turn and the very dedicated folks from the Department of Public Services have worked incredibly hard to repair much of the damage and to restore Lynch Park and several other parks to their full splendor. They work so hard every year to make all of our parks so beautiful. We are very lucky to have them and, as usual, I would like to thank them very much for their hard work and dedication to the City of Beverly. Through the continued generosity of the Community Preservation Committee and CPA funding, several other projects will continue to enhance many of our parks this year and for many years to come. New ADA accessible walkways at Dane Street Beach and Lynch Park were heavily used last summer and will return for summer. The Oak Heights play structure was completely replaced with a great neighborhood effort. For this year, final funding has also been approved for new playgrounds at Pete’s Park, Colgate Park and Vittori Park. Thank you to the citizens of Beverly and the CPC for supporting these great projects. Many of these projects are also being funded with very generous grants from the David S. Lynch Trustees and private donations along with great support from Mayor Cahill and the City Council. The Carriage House at Lynch Park is still available for rentals for receptions, meetings, reunions, functions and other events. Our goal is to continue improving the building so it will serve as a community cultural center for Beverly for many years to come. The Preservation Plan and Feasibility Study for the Lynch Park Carriage House, also funded by the CPC, have been completed and will provide us with guidance as we continue to restore and enhance this great, historic building. As I head into my 16th summer as Recreation Director, I would like to thank all Beverly citizens and our dedicated staff for your continued support, generosity and help throughout the years. Many volunteers have helped in so many ways with community service projects, Boy Scout and Girl Scout projects and planning and building many of our playground projects. We are always looking to enhance our parks, playgrounds, fields and programs. Your feedback is always welcome and appreciated. We wish everyone a fun, safe and happy summer. Thank you all for your help and support.

CARRY IN/CARRY OUT TRASH POLICY

The City of Beverly is proud to continue the Carry In/Carry Out policy at Lynch Park. Over the years, overflowing trash barrels at Lynch Park have become a problem. Carry In/Carry Out asks citizens to be responsible for their own refuse. It will reduce litter and result in a cost savings to the city. It prompts park-goers to use eco-friendly materials, re-directs Department of Public Services resources to more vital areas and projects, and empowers the community by channeling people’s willingness to participate in maintaining a clean environment. Please bring your own trash bags and recycle at home. A limited number of bags will be available at the gate. A successful Carry In/Carry Out program at Lynch Park is another reason to be proud of this great city. We appreciate your cooperation.

BEVERLY DOG ORDINANCE These rules regarding use of Beverly parks to walk dogs were amended by the City Council on 2/16/2016. The ordinance regarding dogs is now Article III, Chapter 117, Sections 117-5. Disposal of animal waste, 117-10. Dogs on beaches and in parks, 117-13. Dog control: - All dogs must be on a leash at all times while in public parks - Owners must pick up after dogs to keep the parks clean - All parks are closed to the public at 10:00PM - Dogs are prohibited from all municipal cemeteries, per ordinance Article III, Chapter 117: Animals, Section 117-13.c

LYNCH PARK

PET WASTE REMINDERS

Memorial Day to Labor Day - Dogs are not allowed at Lynch Park after 7:30AM - On-leash dogs are only allowed in the park from 6:00AM to 7:30AM Labor Day to Memorial Day - Only on-leash dogs are allowed in the park from 6:00AM to 10:00PM

Pollutants from improperly disposed pet waste may be washed into storm sewers or melting snow. Storm sewers do not go to the SESD treatment plant. Instead most storm sewers drain into streams, lakes or along the coast carrying many pollutants along with storm water.

LINDSAY PARK, INDEPENDENCE PARK, BEVERLY COMMON, DIX PARK, COLGATE PARK & COONEY FIELD

When pet waste is disposed of improperly, your health may be at risk, too. Pets, children who play outside, and adults who garden are most at risk for infections from some of the bacteria and parasites found in pet waste. Flies may also spread diseases from animal's waste.

Year Round - Only on-leash dogs are allowed in the parks from 6:00AM-10:00PM

Beverly’s dog population is estimated at 4000 and using that statistic as a baseline, it would suggest a “solid waste” of about 1600 pounds every day.

PLEASE NOTE: Independence Park - Dogs are not allowed on the beach from 8:00AM to 7:30PM Cooney Field - Dogs are only allowed beyond outfield fence of baseball field All Other Parks - Dogs are not allowed on the beaches during times that they are not allowed in the parks

Pet waste may not be the largest or most toxic pollutant in urban waterways, but it is one of the many little sources of pollutants that add up to a big problem for water quality. Fortunately, there are simple things we can do to keep water clean.

ALL OTHER BEVERLY PARKS Memorial Day to Labor Day - Dogs are not allowed in any public park from 7:30AM to 7:30PM - Dogs are only allowed in the parks from 6:00AM to 7:30AM and from 7:30PM to 10:00PM Labor Day to Memorial Day - Only on-leash dogs are allowed in the park from 6:00AM to 10:00PM PLEASE NOTE: On-leash dogs are allowed to use all Beverly parks during the above hours but are not allowed on any ball fields or in any playground areas, sand boxes or garden areas at any time. Cleaning up after your pet can be as simple as taking a plastic bag or pooper-scooper along on your next walk. What should you do with the waste you pick up? No solution is perfect, but here are the choices: Flush it down the toilet– The water from your toilet goes to the SESD treatment plant or private septic system that removes pollutants before the water reaches a water body. Bury it in the yard– Dig a hole or trench about 5 inches deep, away from vegetable gardens and water bodies (lakes, streams, wells, oceans), or ditches with water. Throw it in the trash– This may be easy, but it is not the best solution. After collection, the waste is taken to an incinerator that can cause pollution problems. Another option is to install an underground pet waste digester that works like a small septic tank.
