officially began on June 21st, as did “National Summer Learning Day” with lucky LA public school students participants in the LA’s BEST afterschool enrichment program who got to meet Clippers star Chris Paul at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre. The students received certificates of achievement and viewed a premiere of Disney’s, Monster’s University. Afterwards Paul hosted “LA’s BEST HONORS,” the organization’s 25th anniversary gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. VIPs and guests helped raise more than $1.2 million to aid the organization’s efforts to make lives better for LA kids. During the events, Paul noted, “Since moving to LA two years ago one of the first things I did was I partner with LA’s BEST. And everything that they’ve done since day one has been amazing. The one common link that each of us in this room has is we are all trying to change the lives of kids throughout LA for the better, and guide them to make positive choices for themselves.” Combining his basketball talents with philanthropy, Paul auctioned off a private basketball clinic for the two highest bidders, which brought in $27,000 for LA’s BEST. At the Gala LA’s BEST honored Lubov and Max Azria (BCBGMAXARIAGROUP), Distinguished Achievement; LA84 President Anita DeFrantz, Supporting the Sports and Fitness Programs; Warner Bros. Records Chairman/CEO

Cameron Strang received the LA’s BEST Honor for Music; and Extreme Makeover’s Dr. Bill Dorfman was given the Health award. The black tie event emceed by CNN’s Michaela Pereira was attended by actress/children’s advocate Jane Fonda, former LA Mayor Richard Rierdon, LA City Controller (and runner up to this year’s Mayor’s race) Wendy Greuel, the up-and-coming Indie band Grouplove and Miss South Carolina USA 2011 Courtney Turner. Joining Paul at the El Capitan to hand out the awards was none other than David Niven, Jr. (son of the famed actor and producer) who provided free copies to students of local LA schools of his educational game, “Souvenirs,” which is about American geography. In addition to Disney awarding students free movie passes, was the on-hands talent of Natalie Davis, Senior Manager for Product Development who co-designed the after-school program. Niven, summed up the success of LA’s BEST with helping to educate kids by talking about his game. “They have a good time and (the kids) don’t realize that they are learning something at the same time, which is great and for all ages — 8 to 108.” Be it basketball, board games, or learning, LA’s BEST has had a winning year!
