KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR CELEBRITY “ROAST” HOSTED BY GEORGE LOPEZ Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s legendary basketball career was celebrated at the unveiling of his famed statue by the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center Star Plaza. Multitalented entertainer George Lopez hosted a celebrity roast for Abdul-Jabbar at the JW Marriott L.A. LIVE and Ritz-Carlton in Los Angeles. On hand was a Who’s Who of sports icons, celebrity guests, presenters and performers such as Earvin “Magic” Johnson, the “Showtime” Lakers and more. Since retirement from basketball the iconic Abdul-Jabbar became a best-selling author, humanitarian and cultural ambassador focusing on African American history and education. The Celebrity Roast kicked-off to a national multi-city tour: The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Experience. Presented by the Skyhook Foundation, it features a never-before-seen 300+piece traveling exhibit of memorabilia from Abdul-Jabbar’s life and professional career to benefit the Skyhook Foundation and STEM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) with generous support by Wells Fargo. Abdul-Jabbar is one of basketball’s greatest players of all time. The 7-foot-2 Hall of Fame center was famous for his indefensible skyhook dominating the NBA for 20 years; all-time lead scorer with 38,387 points and only player in the 75-year history of the NCAA namd Most Valuable Player of the Tournament three years in row. After retiring in 1989 he authored 7 best-selling books on contributions of African-Americans to American culture and history and is writing three children’s books for Disney’s Hyperion based on a basketball street gang; it publishes in 2013. Women’s Image Network Awads The 14th Annual Women's Image Network Awards at the Paramount Theater on Paramount Studios lot in Hollywood was an evening filled with empowerment. Beverly Johnson, the first black model to appear on the cover of Vogue arrived in supermodel form looking ravishing. During the program she took the stage to present filmmaker Timothy Greenfield with the WIN Award for Best Documentary Film for his HBO production “About Face: Super Models Then and Now” starring Johnson. The awards ceremony paid tribute to the men and women who go out of their way to promote gender parity in the realm of entertainment.
