Iam honored to have been chosen as one of the “Forty Under 40” judges. It has been a while since I was 40, and being a judge caused me to think back to that time and reflect on the changing nature of business and leadership. Much is different, but I think the essence is the same.
In my day, most business was hierarchical, the proverbial corporate ladder. Success was measured by work ethic, hours worked and billed, and most, if not all, mentoring was from those ahead of you on that ladder. Years on the job translated into experience, then to expertise, which became gravitas. There was a real respect for tenure and seniority, and that ultimately became leadership. The change was incremental, and communication skills and personal relationships drove the process.
For GEN Z, it appears this is much less true. There is very little large corporate structure. There is a real propensity for smaller, startup, much more entrepreneurial businesses. There are fewer corporate ladders, but each new business has its own leader, often a relatively young one. The businesses are heavily weighted to digital (or with a significant digital element) and heavily tech-enabled. They can pivot easily. Mentorship is from a variety of disparate sources and allows for a wider view of the world. Leadership is largely measured by your business’ perceived success (whether real or not) and not your time on the job. Experience, tenure, and gravitas have been largely devalued.
What, then, are the common elements of success in leadership?
What made for a good leader then and makes a good leader now?
• It all starts with a vision. Good leaders have a clear vision of what they want to accomplish. Great leaders have a vision no one else sees. Often called either crazy or visionary, they are the ones who push the boundaries and get us all to places we would never have imagined.
Second is the ability to articulate that vision clearly. In the end, no one successfully works in a vacuum, and a true leader must convince others of their vision's truth. Words matter; a true leader must use those to motivate others.
Assemble your team; people who believe in the vision and can help you get there. Note to self-pick people who are smarter than you are. If they believe your vision, they will get you much further than
you can ever get yourself.
• As difficult as it may be, take a lesson from the old folks. Hard work does usually pay off. There is rarely a shortcut. To be successful, you will need to put in the effort. It may sound depressing, but it is still true.
Find mentors. Don’t avoid the older ones with lots of “gravitas.” They have significant life experience and are usually willing to share with you. But don’t avoid the younger ones, either. Their life experience and yours are similar, and collaborations with them can be very important. Lastly, find one “Rabbi”— someone you can go to with problems, not necessarily for technical solutions, but common-sense advice about the world. If nothing else, they serve as important sounding boards for whatever you are thinking and will help keep you grounded.
I know that whatever comes next will be different. Oddly, at its heart, at its core, it will likely be the same.
Sincerely,
Julian Gold Mayor of Beverly HillsIn the often complex world of insurance, the name of Hylant stands out. Established in 1935, this organization excels in providing insurance, employee benefits, and risk management consulting services. Heading Hylant’s Family Office Practice, Paul Tanner takes pride in their specialization: working closely with family office executives, personal business managers, and trusted advisors such as wealth managers and attorneys.
As a 15-year veteran in the industry, Paul found his calling in raising the bar. "Most of the new clients I met had very little knowledge about their coverage. This made me realize that their prior brokers didn’t take the time to educate them," he recalls. Paul's commitment to ensuring his clients are both properly covered and informed is a vital cornerstone of his work ethic.
As insurance rates skyrocket in California, Hylant is determined not to pass on the burden to its clients. Paul shares, “Carriers that we relied on to protect our prominent families are leaving the state. We are left with an entirely different insurance environment than a few years ago. But I don’t believe passing along exorbitant fees to our clients is acceptable. We aim to develop creative solutions for our clients instead.”
Paul's work and life seamlessly interweave, driven by a fervor to protect his clients' hard-
earned assets. "I am inspired by the tenacity and hard work of my clients. Their journey to success motivates me to find optimal solutions for them."
Operating with the power of a major brokerage but with the finesse of a familyowned business, Hylant can customize service offerings and swiftly adapt to market changes. The team consists of seasoned experts in the private client space, skilled at solving complex needs.
Paul recalls, "Recently, I had the CFO of a major company come to me for a personal umbrella policy. He had a $200,000 gap in coverage for over 10 years. We filled that gap with an additional $130 premium annually."
He emphasizes, "You need to tell clients what they need to hear, not always what they want to hear."
The commitment to protect clients from unnecessary losses is paramount for Hylant. With an in-house claim team ready to step in, Hylant ensures its clients can promptly get back to their lives after a claim arises.
Hylant exemplifies insurance coverage done right: personal, responsive, and informed.

Rodeo Drive, worldrenowned for luxury and prestige, is constantly evolving. The recent grand opening of the 30,000 sq. ft. new Chanel boutique (the largest in the US), the bold transformation of Amiri, and planned renovations for high-end fashion houses like Cartier and Dior, signify a persistent forward momentum on the iconic street. Drawing in a staggering five million visitors annually, the iconic threeblock stretch, a pantheon of over a hundred illustrious brands, is a testament to its contribution to the annual $1.5 billion tourist spend.
Kay Monica Rose, the newly appointed President of the Rodeo Drive Committee as of July 1, 2023, steps into her two-year role at a defining moment in the luxury shopping district's history. As the first woman of color to lead the committee, Rose embodies the spirit of diversity and innovation in the heart of luxury retail.
"We're more than committee members; we're custodians of a legacy and pioneers of its future," Rose shares.
The committee, boasting an array of industry professionals, Rodeo Drive landlords, and key decision makers, is tasked with continuously improving the Rodeo Drive experience. Rose is set to infuse her vision into the boulevard with initiatives such as public art installations and fashion-forward events, like the annual ‘Rodeo Drive Celebrates’ program August and October, that highlight the craftsmanship on the street and the city’s artistic vibrancy.
Building on the legacy left by Rodeo Drive Committee cofounder Fred Hayman, known as the "Godfather of Rodeo Drive", Rose envisions a bright future for the luxury shopping district. Her leadership aims to strike a balance between the allure of physical retail experiences and the rise of the digital era, ensuring Rodeo Drive continues to flourish as a global icon of luxury.
The newly-formed Executive Committee, led by President Rose, comprises returning Vice President Kiersten Dunn, Vice President and former twice-RDC President Kathy Gohari, newly appointed Vice President Chelle Kearney, and returning Treasurer and former RDC President Mark Tronstein, signifying an exciting era of change and growth at Rodeo Drive.
Beverly Hills Living (BHL): Congratulations on your recent appointment as President of the Rodeo Drive Committee, Kay. Could you tell us about your background and aspirations in this new role?
Kay Monica Rose (KMR): Thank you. I’m very excited to serve as President of the Rodeo Drive Committee. I am the Managing Director at Auto Vault Storage, which has operated on Rodeo Drive for the last 40 years and have been involved in the business for 10 years. I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, where there is a strong sense of community and we were always encouraged to advocate for our beliefs. I was honored to serve as Vice President of the Rodeo Drive Committee from 2021-2023, and will now continue the great work our members and board have accomplished to advance this iconic luxury fashion street. As president, my aspiration is to preserve and propel Rodeo Drive forward – for it to reach its greatest and highest potential.
BHL: As the new President, what are some of the first initiatives or projects you plan to launch? How do these tie into your vision for the future of Rodeo Drive?
KMR: One of the first initiatives I have worked on with my executive board is to bring French street artist Mr. Brainwash’s sculpture installation Imagiro to Rodeo Drive. The vibrant and accessible public art installation will be installed along the length of the street through the summer season until September 25 and is free and open to all. I believe in activating the street and inviting visitors and residents to experience fashion, art, and culture in person. Coming next is ‘Rodeo Drive Celebrates Fashion’ from August 7-13 and then ‘Rodeo Drive Celebrates Timepieces and Fine Jewelry” from October 1-7: two dedicated week-long programs for which our members will open their doors with special invitations and bespoke in-store experiences in celebration of the extraordinary craftsmanship and innovation on the street.
BHL: How do you plan to draw in a younger audience and adapt Rodeo Drive's shopping experience to appeal to the digital generation?
KMR: Rodeo Drive’s global audience – and that of new luxury more broadly – has been driving advances in the digital space for many years. Rodeo Drive’s digital footprint is expanding through its social channels including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, collaborations with content makers and influencers, and a dedicated podcast. The inperson experience on the street in the boutiques with the collections and products is as important as their digital iterations. Today younger audiences want to be immersed in experiences that speak to them personally and to share their observations and memories through new digital worlds.
BHL: We’d love to learn more about your personal style. Could you elaborate on this and discuss how your style may shape the future of the area?
KMR: I’m a Southern girl raised in New Orleans that loves to dress formally and fashionably - dresses, handbags, shoes. I believe wearing curated and accessorized looks strengthens one’s confidence and sends out great energy. My style is very much my own and reflects my personality and taste.
BHL: What are some of your core values? How do these values guide your leadership, and how do you plan to imbue them into the atmosphere of Rodeo Drive and work alongside the RDC?
KMR: I am very passionate about Rodeo Drive. Auto Vault has been on the street for over three decades and is where I have worked for the last decade with a dedication to serving each client. My core values are a passion for excellence and kindness and I believe these are felt by those around me and show from the inside out.
