Another Dakota Walleye Classic in the Books The 21st annual Dakota Walleye Classic is officially in the books! The annual event was held at Beulah Bay July 22nd—23rd. The tournament filled at 180 teams at the beginning of June!
This year’s event featured 60+ door prizes, over $47,000 in prize money and some great tournament prize packages. “The support the tournament receives from businesses and individuals from around the area is amazing,” according to Chamber Director Sarah Tunge. “We wouldn’t be able to host a tournament of this caliber without the support we get from the community.” Weather played a role in this year’s tournament, delaying the start of day two by an hour and a half because of lightning. The delay was for the safety of tournament volunteers and teams. It didn’t seem to affect the fishing—teams weighed a 5 year record number and weight of fish this year. “Volunteers are the heart of this tournament,” says Tunge. It takes about 80 volunteers over the course of the three day event; from the rules meeting to the weigh-in to the boat launch. The tournament committee also works hard throughout the year to make sure this is one of the premier fishing events on Lake Sakakawea.
