NATIONAL HEROES DAY Heroes Day in Jamaica has its roots in the country's fight for independence and the desire to recognize those who played pivotal roles in shaping the nation. Prior to its establishment as a holiday, October 20th was known as "National Heroes Day" in honor of Jamaica's seven National Heroes, who were instrumental in the struggle for independence from British colonial rule.

National Heroes Jamaica's National Heroes, each celebrated on this special day, include: 1. Marcus Garvey: A prominent Pan-Africanist and civil rights activist who advocated for the rights and dignity of people of African descent worldwide.

2. Nanny of the Maroons: A fearless leader of the Windward Maroons who defended her people against British forces and is considered a symbol of resistance and freedom.

3. Paul Bogle: A Baptist deacon and social activist who played a pivotal role in the Morant Bay Rebellion, which highlighted the injustices of colonial rule.

4. George William Gordon: Another hero of the Morant Bay Rebellion who fought for the rights of the poor and disenfranchised.

5. Sir Alexander Bustamante: The first Prime Minister of Jamaica and a key figure in the country's journey toward self-governance.

6. Norman Washington Manley: A statesman and political leader who played a vital role in the labor movement and the push for independence.

7. Sam Sharpe: A Baptist deacon and leader of the Christmas Rebellion of 1831-32, which ultimately led to the end of slavery in Jamaica.

Heroes Day Celebrations Heroes Day in Jamaica is marked with a series of events and activities that celebrate the heroes and their legacies. One of the most notable traditions is the National Honours and Awards Ceremony, where Jamaicans are recognized for their outstanding contributions to the nation. This ceremony includes the presentation of the Order of National Hero, the highest honor one can receive in Jamaica.

Cultural Significance Heroes Day serves as a powerful reminder of the struggles and sacrifices that paved the way for Jamaica's independence. It reinforces the idea that heroism can take many forms, from political leadership to grassroots activism. The day encourages Jamaicans to embrace their cultural heritage, celebrate their heroes, and work together for the betterment of their nation.

UNDERAGE GAMBLING PREVENTION WEEK

In the week of September 24th to 30th, 2023, a groundbreaking event took place in Jamaica and the Caribbean. RISE Life Management Services marked the inaugural Underage Gambling Prevention Week. During this week, RISE's Underage Gambling Prevention Officers conducted extensive awareness and training activities involving students and peer educators. Notably, a Letter to the Editor was published in both the Observer and Gleaner, outlining the planned activities and raising awareness about the program.

Radio interviews were conducted with Nationwide News Network and Bess FM. The Gleaner featured a front-page article on Sunday, October 15, addressing the issue of underage gambling and RISE's efforts in this area. A significant highlight of the week was the Underage Gambling Prevention Jingle Awards Ceremony held on September 27th, attended by students from 15 schools across the island.

The support for these activities received a boost when RJR committed to broadcasting the Jingles to reach Jamaican youth. Additionally, RISE's social media partner, Get Social, engaged prominent influencers Deno Crazy and Chad Luchey, who created informative content aired on Facebook and Instagram. Influencer Shaquille iRealPedro Blake delivered the main address for the ceremony.

RISE acknowledges the Ministry of Education and Youth for their cooperation, granting access to students and school resources crucial for the successful Jingle Competition 2023. Finally, the BGLC, who has funded and supported RISE for 18 years, played a pivotal role by providing substantial support throughout the week. The BGLC assisted in planning and mobilizing resources for the production of the top 5 winning jingles.

WHAT TO DO DURING AN EARTHQUAKE

Earthquakes are unpredictable and potentially dangerous natural disasters. Knowing what to do during an earthquake is essential for your safety. Here are some simple but crucial steps to follow when the ground starts shaking.

1. DROP (OR LOCK) Wherever you are, drop down to your hands and knees and hold onto something sturdy. If you’re using a wheelchair or walker with a seat, make sure your wheels are locked and remain seated until the shaking stops.

IF YOU ARE IN A CAR :

If you're driving, pull over to a safe spot away from buildings, trees, and overpasses. Stay inside your vehicle with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking subsides. Be cautious of landslides and road damage.

Take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture, like a table or desk, to protect yourself from falling objects and debris. If there's no cover nearby, use your arms to shield your head and neck.

Stay under your shelter until the shaking stops, even if it's intense. This will help you avoid injuries from falling items.
