What can the Bankside Neighbourhood Plan do for us?

i

t can say what sort of development we want to see in Bankside in the future, and how that development can help deliver benefits for our community.

Over the coming weeks we are gathering as many local views as possible through meetings, interviews and drop-in events. Based on your comments, the Bankside Neighbourhood Plan will make a difference. As well as your views today, you can also continue to send in your ideas through the website for the plan

www.wearebankside.com or by writing to Bankside Neighbourhood Forum Freepost RTGC-GZKA-UUCZ, The Community Space, 18 Great Guildford Street, London, SE1 0FD. There are also many other ways to contribute and get involved in the Neighbourhood Forum, just ask us for details.

So what is the Bankside Neighbourhood Plan?

t

he Government’s Localism Act now gives us all the chance to influence how our neighbourhood develops in the future through a Neighbourhood Plan.

In Bankside that means residents, businesses and community organisations all working together to agree a vision for the future of our neighbourhood. As well as setting out what we want for the future character and development of Bankside, the

Neighbourhood Plan will also be a planning policy document that has real powers to give direction for our area, sitting alongside Southwark Council’s New Local Plan and the Mayor’s London Plan.

What makes Bankside so special for us?

b

ankside’s rich history has given us a distinctive mix of buildings, streets and open spaces.

We have lots of long established residential and business communities, and world famous cultural institutions in our neighbourhood, and it’s now also the focus for new residential and business investment.

Whilst we need to have more homes and jobs, we don’t think these should be at the expense of the special character of Bankside. New development in Bankside benefits the whole borough, and while we welcome this investment it could put what’s already here under strain.

What is the Bankside Neighbourhood Forum?

a

group of local residents, businesses and community organisations have formed the Bankside Neighbourhood Forum.

The forum started to think about what a plan for Bankside might say, making sure what we all think is special now, stays special. As the Neighbourhood Plan will affect the area where you live or work, we want to be sure that what goes in the plan is what local people

and local businesses want. With all the new buildings and developments, lots of new uses, and even more new people living and working in Bankside, it’s important to make sure that the future planning decisions are right for Bankside and us.

How can we make our neighbourhood better?

y

our views will make sure that the Bankside Neighbourood Plan reflects local experiences as the neighbourhood changes over the coming years.

We’re looking at a number of aspects of local life and the changes that are happening or could happen. We call them themes and we would like your views on them. They include:

• Heritage and design
 • Small and large businesses including retail
 • Housing
 • Green and open spaces • Transport, streets and the public realm • Social facilities and service

What does the future hold?

l

ocal opportunities from development. Over the years, a number of community projects have been funded through developments in Bankside.

Included within these are improvements to our streets and public spaces, and funding local employment initiatives. Many of these have made a difference to local people and groups.

In future, there will be a new “Projects List” as part of the Neighbourhood Plan. It’s important to find out your ideas now on new community projects that have local support, and that can make a difference in our community.

So what happens next?

a

lthough there are many stages to producing a Neighbourhood Plan, we will keep you posted on its progress through our website www.wearebankside.com

Once all the ideas have been collated from the consultations, and have been taken into account, you will have a further opportunity to comment on the draft plan. YOU ALSO GET A VOTE What’s also different about the Neighbourhood Plan is that once it’s written Bankside residents and businesses can vote on it, probably

in early 2014. Voting for the Neighbourhood Plan will mean local opinions will influence the planning decisions made by Southwark Council on all future developments in Bankside. That’s why the Neighbourhood Plan needs to say what local residents and businesses want for Bankside.
