Every booming town needs a hospital, and Yankton was no exception. After the town was founded in 1861, the original Sacred Heart Hospital opened its doors on Nov. 4, 1897. Six Benedictine Sisters, who had been educated as teachers, were sent to various locations during the summer to “get as much nursing training as possible.” The original hospital building was established as an academy and once used as Bishop Mary’s shortlived Indian school before being converted to a hospital. In 1897, the hospital had no electricity and kerosene lamps were used for lighting. Instruments were sterilized on the kitchen stove, dressings were “baked” in the oven and a coal-burning stove heated each room. The first transportation to and from the hospital was by horse (Old Dobbin) and buggy, which also served as the ambulance on a dirt street that was muddy and dusty much of the time. Sacred Heart quickly outgrew its 30-bed building and broke ground in 1912 for an 80-bed facility that was dedicated in 1915. Today’s 144-bed building was originally built in 1981 and the Avera name was adopted in 1998. Senior Care Sister James Souhrada’s dream of establishing a unit to provide care for the elderly was realized in 1949. Senior services continue to be of importance to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, and in 1999 hospital officials announced the purchase of land for a senior living complex. The first 113 residents moved into the facility in 2000.

After humble beginnings with its first patient in 1897, Avera Sacred Heart Hospital now provides care to more than 120,000 people in a 15-county region. Many renovations and updates made Avera Sacred Heart Hospital what it is today: a regional medical center with state-of-the-art technology that’s used by more than 1,200 highly skilled employees and physicians. The Avera Sacred Heart Hospital’s 144-bed facility is recognized for excellence in emergency medicine, cancer care, cardiopulmonary, surgical services, obstetrics, pediatrics, home health and hospice programs, medical education and research, rehabilitation services and a full range of wellness services. Outreach to rural communities in the area surrounding Yankton is very important to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital. With this focus, Avera Sacred Heart Hospital is proud to operate seven primary care, rural health care clinics. Avera Medical Groups are located in Creighton, Crofton, Hartington, Niobrara, O’Neill, Pierce and Verdigre, Neb.

Some noted updates include the opening of the Avera Surgery Center in 2003, which features two therapeutic pools, cardiac and pulmonary rehab, outpatient physical therapy and the Garden Spot Café. The first floor of the Surgery Center is a progressive Same Day Surgery Center — the only outpatient surgical facility in the Yankton region with physician anesthesiologists and immediate access to the full resources of Avera Sacred Heart Hospital. In 2006, the new Emergency Department was completed, which doubled the number of patient rooms and gave ambulance patients a separate entrance from walk-in patients. In 2007, the Avera Professional Office Pavilion was established to house physician offices, a medical library, an amphitheatre and meeting rooms, a two-story atrium and the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital Campus of the Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota - 3rd Year Medical Student Model Program. An MRI Room was added in 2011, and houses the strongest MRI in Yankton. The Open Bore Siemens Magnetom Skyra 3T MRI uses the most powerful magnet commercially available — which means the images obtained at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital will have more detail than other MRI results, allowing radiologists and doctors to make a more accurate diagnosis. In 2012, a surgery project will include integrated operating rooms, recovery and pre-/post-op.
