Bethel

vs.

St. OLAF

What to Watch For The Bethel file: The Royals enter Saturday’s contest with an unbeaten 8-0 record overall, including a 6-0 status against league opponents. Bethel held Hamline to just a touchdown in last week’s 55-6 rout over the Pipers, and used eight offensive touchdowns in the victory. As the only unbeaten team in the conference, BU is one win away from at least a share of the 2013 MIAC Championship title.

The St. Olaf File: The Oles enter today’s MIAC matchup with a 1-7 record overall, including a winless mark against conference opponents (0-6). Coming off of their bye week, the Oles most recent contest came against the Carleton Knights, where St. Olaf fell at home 37-42. In the Oles’ eight games played, they have averaged 22.5 points per game, but their defense has allowed 32.6 points per game.

Due north: Bethel’s success on the field has led to several rewards off the field. Just this week, the Royals moved up in the AFCA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll from No. 8 to No. 7. Additionally, the Royals were announced No. 2 in the West Region Rankings behind UW-Whitewater. Finally, Bethel remains the No. 5 team in the D3football.com Top 25 poll.

The series: Today’s game between St. Olaf and Bethel marks the 39th meeting between these two opponents. The Royals own a 22-16 advantage over the Oles, but St. Olaf has won the last two contests—both by a touchdown in the final minutes of play. BU’s last win over the Oles was in 2010—the same season Bethel won its second West Region Championship.

Clutch performers: The Royals remain one of the top teams in the nation when it comes to converting on third and fourth down opportunities. Following last week’s 3-of-5 mark on third-down chances,at Hamline Bethel now ranks No. 4 nationwide in third-down conversions with a 47-of-87 (54 percent) mark on the season. On third and fourth down collectively, BU has completed a combined total of 52-of-85. New target: Freshman tight end, Drew Neuville, caught his first two touchdown passes of his career last weekend against Hamline, as he finished the league affair with two receptions, 48 yards, and two scores. Neuville has quietly become a primary target among a team with five seasoned wide receivers. Through eight games, Neuville has hauled in 11 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Senior day: Today’s contest against the Oles will be the final regular-season competition that Bethel’s 19 seniors will play at Royal Stadium. Throughout their tenure with the Royals, these seniors have helped BU achieve a 37-7 record (81.1 percent) since the beginning of the 2010 season.

Flight patterns: St. Olaf’s aerial attack continues to see success, despite losing starting quarterback Dan Dobson to graduation last year. The Oles, who are first among MIAC teams in passing yards per completion (14.2 yards) have completed 148-of-245 passes for 2,104 yards and 14 touchdowns. St. Olaf, who is led by quarterback Nate Penz, is averaging 263.0 yards per game and 8.6 yards per passing attempt. Deep and wide: The Oles are led by a trio of wide receivers, including seniors Stephen Asp and Jake Schmiesing. Asp leads the squad with 40 receptions, 592 yards, and 74.0 yards per game, while Schmiesing has caught 32 passes for 492 yards and eight touchdowns. Joel Reinhardt has also totalled 466 receiving yards and three scores. Rookie recap: First-year head coach Craig Stern is in his tenth year with the Oles, as he spent the previous nine as defensive coordinator and director of recruiting. Stern’s recruiting helped St. Olaf go 15-5 in the previous two seasons.

ONE YEAR AGO NORTHFIELD, Minn. – It was déjà vu for the Royals in Northfield Saturday, as St. Olaf composed a game-winning drive for the second consecutive year to defeat Bethel 24-17. A 30-yard pass from Ole quarterback Dan Dobson to a well-defended Jake Schmiesing was brought down with 3:22 remaining in the game to give St. Olaf the 24-17 advantage and BU was never able to respond. With the loss, the Royals (7-2, 5-2 MIAC) were in a three-way tie with the Oles (7-2, 5-2 MIAC) and Concordia (7-2, 5-2 MIAC) for second place in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. St. Olaf tallied the game’s first points with a sevenyard scoring reception by Schmiesing at the 3:39 mark in the first quarter. Seth Mathis sparked the Royals on the Ole’s next offensive drive, when he intercepted a Dobson pass—his fourth interception of the year—and took it 44 yards for a BU score. Bethel was able to keep St. Olaf off the board the rest of the half and managed its first converted field goal attempt of the season when Nathaniel Van Loon split the goal posts from 22 yards out. Van Loon’s kick gave BU a 10-7 lead going into the half.

The Royals maintained a strong defensive effort throughout entire game, but Dobson created another scoring opportunity for St. Olaf at 6:35 in the third quarter, when connecting with Derek Henie for a fiveyard touchdown. St. Olaf held onto the 14-10 lead going into the fourth quarter until Bethel scored its first offensive touchdown with 11:40 on the clock. Facing a fourthand-four sophomore quarterback Erik Peterson connected with Jesse Phenow, who rumbled 32 yards to a BU score—giving the lead back to the Royals, 17-14. The Ole’s managed a field goal on the ensuing drive to even the score at 17-17 with 4:32 left in the game, however, a costly fumble on the following kickoff return gave the ball back to St. Olaf and allowed Dobson & Co. to stun the Royals for the second-straight year. The Oles faced a 3rd-and-7 from the Bethel 30-yard-line and despite being flushed out of the pocket Dobson was able to heave a pass towards

the end zone. A scuffle between receiver and defensive backs resulted in a Schmiesing catch, which put St. Olaf ahead for good. Bethel’s offensive attack was severely minimized in the MIAC affair, as the Royals posted eight first downs and 38 rushing yards. BU won the turnover battle, however, which included Mathis’s 44-yard interception returned for a touchdown. Saturday’s “pick-six” was the second 40-plus yard interception for a score, as J.D. Mehlhorn took a 40-yard pick-off back against Buena Vista University earlier this year. Defensively, Erik Smith led all tacklers with 16 tackles, including one half sack for a six-yard loss. Mathis also added 14 tackles to Saturday’s resume, along with one pass break up. Senior nose guard Gavin Maurer also recorded an interception against St. Olaf. Erik Peterson completed 14-of-27 passes on the day, with six receptions and 40 yards coming at the hands of Mitch Hallstrom. Jay Hilbrands also caught three passes for 25 yards.
