The Bethel file: The No. 6-ranked Royals enter today’s quarterfinal matchup against the Cardinals with their best record in program history. Bethel is 12-0 on the season, after finishing the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) schedule unblemished (8-0). BU topped St. Scholastica in the first round of the playoffs 70-13, before defeating Wartburg College 34-27 last Saturday.

The North Central file: The No. 4-ranked Cardinals come into Saturday’s quarterfinal matchup against the Royals with a 12-0 record, after finishing the College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin (CCIW) schedule 7-0. North Central upended Albion 63-7 in the first round of the playoffs before taking down UW-Platteville 54-20 last Saturday. Both NCC’s games have been in Naperville, Ill.

Recent history: Both programs have had a knack for the postseason since the turn of the century. Bethel, who has won the MIAC five times since 2000, is in its eighth playoff run in that time frame with three quarterfinal contests and two West Region Championships. North Central, who has won or shared the CCIW title for eight consecutive seasons, has been to the NCAA Championships seven of the last eight years with two trips to the quarterfinals, but no region championships.

The series: Saturday’s game between North Central and Bethel will be the first meeting between the two opponents. Since 2010, BU and NCC have totalled a combined postseason record of 10-6. Moreover, both have been to the quarterfinals twice in the same time frame.

Nationwide is on your side: Bethel has had great success on both sides of the ball in 2013, which has led to many Top 10 rankings. The Royals rank No. 5 in completion percentage (69.7), No. 6 in passing efficiency (174.2), No. 6 in turnover margin per game (1.7), No. 9 in passes intercepted (20), and No. 10 in turnovers lost (11). Top 5 and rising : Before the season began, Bethel’s head football coach, Steve Johnson, was No. 9 among active coaches in all-time wins with 173 victories. Now with 185 in his 25-year career, Johnson now ranks No. 5 and just seven wins separate him from No. 2. Mathis’s mean business : Bethel’s defense is led by Mathis brothers, Seth and Landon, who have collectively totalled 212 tackles on the season. Seth, a senior, has wrapped up 124 tackles, including six for loss and 1.5 sacks. Additionally, he has intercepted five passes and broken up seven. Landon, a sophomore, has amassed 88 tackles, with two interceptions, five breakups, and two forced fumbles.

Award winners: North Central claimed two prestigious honors several weeks ago when the CCIW awards were announced. Quarterback Spencer Stanek received the Art Keller Offensive Player of the Year and Shane Dierking was named the Don Larson Defensive Player of the Year. Immediate impact: In his 12th year as the head coach for the Cardinals, John Thorne, earned his 100th victory this season when defeating UW-Steven’s Point. Thorne is not only the only football coach in NCC history to cross the century mark, but he is the second-fastest coach in CCIW history to reach 100 victories. Success stalker: Spencer Stanek has had a season full of success, as he not only leads the nation in passing efficiency (198.9), but also ranks second in completion percentage (74.7) and third in touchdown passes (39). Stanek has thrown just one interception in 308 passing attempts and has amassed 3,048 yards. Defensive dandy : North Central’s Nick Slezak has paced the Cardinal’s defense with 99 total tackles, including 17 for a total loss of 42 yards. Slezak has also broken up seven passes, hurried the QB twice, and recovered one fumble.
