BETHEL

vs.

GUSTAVUS

WHAT TO WATCH FOR The Bethel file: The Royals are coming off of an exciting 28-21 triumph over St. Thomas in last Saturday’s Top 10 game. Not only was the win Bethel’s first regular-season victory against UST since 2007, but it sustained BU’s unblemished record through six contests. Still ranked No. 5 in the D3football.com Top 25 poll and No. 8 in the AFCA Coaches Top 25 poll, Bethel is the only MIAC team without a loss.

The Gustavus File: The Golden Gusties improved to 4-2 (2-2 MIAC) on the year with a sizeable 42-21 victory over nonconference foe, Valley City State, last Saturday. Gustavus Adolphus used its power rushing attack to glean 264 yards on 47 carries against the Vikings, while Gustie quarterback, Mitch Hendricks, had an efficient day—throwing for 102 yards on 13-of-20 passing and no interceptions.

No ceiling: In last year’s battle at St. Peter, Bethel quarterback Erik Peterson finished 27-of-29 for 315 yards and three touchdowns. Not only did he set a new school record for passing percentage in a single game, but he finished the 2012 season as the league’s most proficient passer. Peterson is back at it again in 2013, as he leads the MIAC in passing percentage—completing 70.4 percent of his passes.

The series: Today’s game between Bethel and Gustavus marks the 36th meeting between the two squads. The Royals own an 18-17 advantage against the Gusties, with an 11-2 mark since the turn of the century. BU defeated GAC 41-21 on Hollingsworth Field in 2012.

Players of the Week: Following last Saturday’s monumental victory, two Bethel players were honored with MIAC Football Player of the Week accolades. Erik Peterson received the offensive award with his 20-of-29 and two-touchdown performance, including an 8-of-9 mark and 95 yards in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, linebacker, Seth Mathis, earned both the MIAC Defensive and Beyond Sports Network Linebacker of the Week honor for his 16-tackle, one-forced fumble, one-recovery, and three-breakup effort. Pickpocketed: Bethel’s defense has been thirsty for turnovers in 2013, as the Royals have forced 19 takeaways in six games played. Most recently, BU has theived 11 turnovers in the last three contests, including seven fumbles and four interceptions. Right out of the gate: The Royals have come out of the gate thirsty so far in 2013, as they have outscored opponents 134-42 in the opening half. Interestingly enough, last week’s win was the first time BU trailed by more than a point.

Debating Dubose: Perhaps one of the best rushers in the league, Jeffrey Dubose has amassed 845 yards on 153 carries throughout his senior season. With 14 touchdowns and 140.8 yards per game, Dubose ranks first among all MIAC players in TDs and total points, while ranking second in yards per game. Last Saturday, his three TDs broke a career touchdown record for Gustavus. The Saint Paul native has 38 scores (32 rushing, six receiving) in his four-year career. Minimal mistakes: Gustavus has helped itself out tremendously throughout 2013, as they lead the conference in fewest penalties (26), penalties per game (4.3), and penalty yards (268). The Royals rank second in penalty yards (276). Bring em’ back: One reason the Gusties can credit their success to this year has been returning 17 starters from the 2012 squad. On offense, Gustavus brought back seven starters, which included four on the offensive line. Meanwhile, the Golden Gusties’ defense returned eight student-athletes. Among the eight, were all four defensive backs and each of the three linebackers. GAC ranks third among all MIAC squads in team defense, allowing 17.8 points per game.

ONE YEAR AGO ST. PETER, Minn. – Bethel upended Gustavus Adolphus College 41-21 on a foggy Saturday afternoon, thanks in large part to Erik Peterson and the BU offense, who completed 27-of-29 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns. The Royals (6-1, 4-1 MIAC) managed 23 first downs and 452 total yards of offense, while limiting the Gusties (2-5, 1-4) to just 248 yards of total offense. Bethel went ahead 28-7 going into the half, which proved to be a sizeable lead Gustavus would not be able to overcome. Derek Waldbillig capped off BU’s opening seven-play, 68-yard drive with a two-yard dive to give the Royals the early 7-0 lead. A later interception by Josh Treimer handed the rock back to BU, which set up Peterson’s first throwing TD of the day on a 19-yard toss to Hans Duininck—his first touchdown reception of the year. Jesse Phenow quickly capitalized on another BU scoring opportunity, when plunging in from three yards out to finish off another seven-play drive, spanning 59 yards. The Gusties put its first points on the board with just over five minutes to play in the half to make the score 21-7, however, Phenow would not

be stopped at the goal line at the end of the half. Initially stopped on a 4th-and-1, Phenow kept charging and found the end zone with 13 seconds remaining to push Bethel to a 28-7 halftime advantage. Despite the Royals wearing the road whites, things continued to get black and blue for the Gusties, as BU put two more scores on the board in the third quarter – giving Bethel a 41-7 lead with 1:36 left in the third quarter. Both scores came through the air, with Erik Peterson firing a 12-yard pass to Jay Hilbrands and a 6-yard dump to Waldbillig. The Peterson-Hilbrands connection marked the fifth time this season the combo has put six on the board, while Waldbillig scored his eighth touchdown of the year. Gustavus was able to make a couple drives connect to six in the fourth quarter, including a 17-play, eight-minute drive that cut the deficit to 41-14 and a crazy 16-yard scamper with just over three minutes remaining that saw Muresuk Mena come out of a pile of stood-up players at the Bethel 15-yard-line and into the GAC end zone, resulting in a 41-21 final. Peterson’s 27-of-29 set a new Bethel record for

completion percentage in a single game, as his 93.1 percent accuracy and 315 yards passing was easily the sophomore’s most complete game in his career at BU. With his nearly flawless day, Peterson’s season completion percentage of 68.1 is just behind St. Olaf’s Dan Dobson’s, who is at 68.3. Of the 27 completions, it was Mitch Hallstrom who benefited most with 10 receptions for 107 yards. With his 10 receptions, Hallstrom now ranks No. 1 among all MIAC receivers in total receptions (41). Other receivers in the mix were Hilbrands and Duininck, who finished with five and four, respectively. Jesse Phenow led the ground attack with 64 yards on 18 carries, leading to two touchdowns. The Royals defense had a favorable day, holding Gustavus to seven points in the first 45 minutes. Jordan Anderson finished as the leading tackler with 10 wrapups, while Treimer and David Morgan each recorded an interception and a breakup. As a unit, Bethel held Gustavus to 64 yards passing, 184 yards rushing, and just 15 first downs.
