Bethani S. Puzo || Mountain Vista Mountain Vista Park objective: Design a facility with predetermined programming, working with existing topography, while creating a free-flowing and aesthetically appealing movement through the facility. The site is located North of Fort Collins with views of Longs Peak, which should be considered in the final design. Process: Site visit to determine best views, along with construction of a clay model to understand topography. Identify key words and concept imagery for design base. Creating design alternatives to best determine flow and programming placement. Master Plan development with site grading, tying to existing contour lines.

Bethani S. Puzo || Rocky Flats Restoration Proposal Rocky Flats Restoration Objective: Focus on a site that has experienced significant impacts as a result of a major chemical crisis. Focusing on history of site, post-disaster recovery assisting with rebuilding, rehabilitation and restoration. Process: Understanding extent of contamination and history of site, (what caused accident, what steps have been taken through the EPA to clean up site currently). Extensive research on the rehabilitation and restoration of the site through detoxification of site using phytoremediation. Site analysis, topography analysis, ecological setting and evaluation done for location. Proposing design alternatives representing all elements of site. Final presentation included three phases showing the progression of the project.

Phase: I 2015-2030

Phytoremediation with use of wheat, rye, barley and native grasslands

Phase: II 2030-2045

Implementation of trail system, water system, road, amphitheater, parking, and trees

Phase: III 2045-2060

Implementation of ecological systems and buffalo range

Heavy Remediation:

-Ripping of all soils to break compaction -Replanting of site with alternating rows of rye, wheat and barley (annual rotation of planting)

Moderate Remediation:

-Moderate soil ripping in compation areas -Half native grasses, half rye/barley/wheat mixture

Bethani S. Puzo || Berkana Rehabilitation Institute Therapy Gardens The Berkana Rehabilitation Institute Therapy Gardens is focused on the whole body healing for those individuals that have suffered a traumatic amputation of a limb. The therapy gardens encompass nature and art to build a state-of-the-art facility working with individuals in all stages of their amputation, including pre-rehabilitation and post-rehabilitation. This one-of-a-kind facility will allow families to share the rehabilitation experience with their loved ones as they experience real world challenges on site. Working with staff to overcome all obstacles found throughout the facility, the rehabilitation gardens are set to get those with an outdoor adventure back on path.

Concept Development: Model reflecting the broken pieces one may feel after a loss of limb or traumatic experience.

Working model reflecting the form and figure of facility.

Legend Ornamental tree Shade tree

The concept design for this master plan comes from a functional, yet creative design. It embraces the views going out towards the lake for employees to enjoy from the patio. There is also positive movement around the parking lot, with a designated permeable paving surface setting the plaza entrance apart from others. The native seed and marsh lands are found towards the southern point of the location creating a wetland habitat with drainage towards the detention pond. The free flowing movement throughout the space creates a home away from home, enclosing the back terrace in a cascade of natural color and water.

Legend Large Radius Circular 25’ or 50’

The irrigation concept plan took into account minimal water use. Irrigated sites are found within planting beds, lawn areas and sections of the marshland area. The use of large radius circular sprinkler heads were 25’ or 50’ radius heads. The use of short radius circular sprinkler heads were either 10’ or 15’ radius heads. The drip system was placed in the shrub beds located on the east side parking lot. The marshland/wetland area near the lake is not irrigated; this will be filled with native grass seed that will be irrigated through the runoff from the site.
