Choosing Leaders The 2012 Presidential and Congressional elections may have profound for America. The future of our health care system, tax system and entitlement programs will be decided by which candidates take office this month. Each citizen plays a role in the outcome of the election, and each brings their own set of expectations of their leaders to the polling booth. How we choose is influenced by many factors: the candidates’ views on the issues, their work and life experience, their party affiliation, and even their age, family status and religion. All of this is fascinating in and of itself, but it gains even more currency when we remember that parshat Toldot, which will be read shortly after the election, deals with the blessing of a son who will be the father of a nation. The choice is not straightforward. TheTorah recounts the story of Isaac and Rebecca and their twin sons Esau and Jacob. It famously recounts how Jacob deceives his father Isaac, thereby stealing his twin brother Esau’s blessing as firstborn. Reading the story as a parable, some interesting parallels to modern politics emerge. First, there is a splitting of alliances: Jacob favors his son Esau; Rebecca favors Jacob. While Esau’s status as the firstborn should ensure he will receive Isaac’s blessing and lead the family, Rebecca had received a prophecy from God that Jacob would be triumphant over Esau. Each, therefore, can make a claim to be the firstborn ‘officeholder.’ Like modern politicians, each has an authoritative ‘back story’ establishing their bona fides for office.
