Dear Friends & Neighbors, Who does not have a summer bucket list to work on, now that the pandemic is coming to an end? Don’t forget to get twice your summer fun in this year to make up for lost time. Start by coming out to the Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade, which was canceled last year but is being held this year on the official work holiday, Monday, July 5th. Come early by 9:15am to watch the Broomall Rotary’s Firecracker 5K Run speed along the West Chester Pike parade route. Cheer on our local runners and celebrate the birth of our nation with cheering for freedom and happy days that are here again. Speaking about cheering, let’s cheer for our two new Sponsors of Marple Township residents who will also be serving as our two newest Expert Contributors of feature articles in which they’ll share their expertise. One of new Sponsors is our new “First Lady of Law,” Deborah M. Truscello, Esq. We now have a lawyer in the family, a trusted professional we can call for any legal matter, particularly matters of family law or claims related to personal injury, work injury or social security claims. We’re fortunate Deb is on our team now. Remember her name! Deborah M. Truscello is one of Delaware County’s most well-known and successful attorneys, with her own very successful general practice law firm she started in 1993. We’ll likely be voting for her someday. (Look for Deb’s first Expert Contributor feature article next month.) Also coming to the party is Broomall resident Jeremy Sirkin, and his company Executive Tree Care, as our other new Sponsor who understandably will serve as our Expert for Tree Care and Inspection. Like thousands of Marple residents, Jeremy Sirkin receives our hometown magazine in the mail. He understands how every new issue of Marple Friends & Neighbors in the mail and online at www.MarpleMag.com is something of value to his community, which he wanted to serve as a hometown Sponsor. Look for Jeremy’s expertise, related to Tree Care and Inspection, in upcoming feature articles. Thank you, Jeremy. You’ve joined an elite group of business owners who recognize how sponsoring Marple residents leads to Marple residents rewarding their hometown Sponsors with their business. Enjoy your summer everyone, and whenever possible, shop local.

“Green” Waterproofing and Weatherization Solutions Yield Immediate Results
H
ere are several examples of successful “green” (ecofriendly) waterproofing and weatherization projects, all of which used cost-effective, chemical-free solutions that did not harm shrubbery or nearby streams. BETTER INDOOR AIR QUALITY FOR A REHABBED BRICK COLONIAL Indoor air quality was poor in this partially rehabbed home. Instead of using an air filtration and additional HVAC solution, the property was regraded with sand, stone and perimeter grass. This green solution made the basement much less humid, allowing the formerly wet moldy walls to be sealed and encapsulated. After a fresh air vent was installed and some repairs were made to the downspouts, the home’s indoor air quality was greatly improved.

4TH TIME’S THE CHARM A homeowner had been waiting for clean, healthy indoor air since she purchased the home 40+ years ago. Another waterproofing company’s three attempts to seal the walls had failed. Even an oversized commercial dehumidifier hadn’t solved the problem. The green solution, which was to install window vents and new correctly pitched aluminum rain gutters and self-cleaning gutter guards, significantly improved the indoor air quality. The commercial dehumidifier will be resold, recouping some of the solution’s cost. BUNGALOW RANCH HOME’S BASEMENT IS FINALLY USABLE! The basement in a bungalow ranch home offered additional square feet, but wet floors kept it as a storage room only, not the home gym and attractive laundry room the homeowners wanted. The existing sump pump was retained, and a new mini French drain was installed and attached to the pump, saving costs! The 70-year-old concrete flooring, which was removed and recycled at a local masonry supply, was transformed into road gravel and concrete. They now have a healthy clean space to use any way they like, with a very reasonable costeffective budget. A TOP-DOWN SOLUTION The upper attic in a 60-year-old split-level home needed upgraded insulation, to stop condensation and nail rust that had caused loose shingles and moisture penetration. Cellulose fiber, which offers uniformity of coverage, fire resistance and triple the density of glass fiber, was blown directly over the original fiberglass insulation. This encapsulation effectively stopped heat loss at the joist. It also reduced contamination by glass dust and mice feces in the split level’s lower attic. The home is now quieter and has less condensation. (Recycled newspaper has proven to do a far better job than rolled batts at staying warm, dry and green!) A WHIFF OF FRESH, CLEAN AIR FOR AN 1860 CLAPBOARD COLONIAL Sinkholes, clogged downspouts and decomposing mulch around the property were producing greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor — and a very undesirable smell when the windows were open. The green solution was to install new rain gutters and also properly grade the property for effective water management. The result is a dry, sweet-smelling basement. P.S. Did you know that professionally planted trees is the only home improvement project that pays more than 100% ROI? (A tennis court has the worst ROI.) M
Student of the Month

The July Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Matt Dickerson, who will be a Senior at Marple Newtown High School this fall! Matt received a Certificate of Achievement, and a “Pizza Bowl” gift certificate courtesy of Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this program. Since 8th grade, Matt has regularly and consistently demonstrated Excellence in Service to many local communities! He’s a frequent volunteer for Kids Against Hunger (KAH), and in lieu of a Christmas gift from his parents last year, he asked his parents to make a donation to KAH in his name. Their donation was matched by another generous donor who shares Matt’s desire to support KAH’s mission. He also participates in food drives that help several local churches keep their food banks supplied for their outreach ministries. And as a Venturer with Crew 151, Matt enjoys and often takes the initiative to organize community service projects. Matt also serves his school community by sharing his talents as a drummer and percussionist in the Marple Newtown Tiger Marching Band, the Concert Band and the Jazz Band. And since age 4, he has been a team member on many Marple Newtown Soccer Association teams. Matt’s academic, leadership, service and character excellence have been recognized by his induction into 6 Honor Societies: the National Honor Society, the Science and English National Honor Societies, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, the World Language Honors Society, and the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society.

When Matt was in 4th grade, he lost the tip of his little finger on his right hand in a swingset accident. That got him interested in how prosthetics and implants help improve the qualify of life for people who’ve lost a leg or an arm. Those medical technologies use advanced electrical engineering, which Matt plans on studying in college so he can combine his heartfelt desire to help people with his intellectual and leadership skills. All your Friends & Neighbors in the Marple Newtown community thank you for your service, Matt. We congratulate you on this award, and wish you well in all your future endeavors! July 2021

Bringing People Together Written by Bob Blaisse, Publisher
Bringing People Together Marple Friends & Neighbors
T
There is Freedom in Bringing People Together.
his month begins with festive hails to American Freedom through 4th of July celebrations recalling the birth of our nation. We, living in the Land of the Free, have much to be grateful for. Even more so this July, for the greater freedoms returning to our community. We’re coming together more now in groups, without masks, and as we do, the memory of that simple freedom is welcomed by all who cooperated with social distancing as required during the height of the COVID-19 world pandemic.
This July also brings to an end our third year of publishing Marple Friends & Neighbors in print and online at www. MarpleSquareMag.com. It is hard for me to believe you’re holding our 36th issue in your hands! Can you recall the first time Marple’s hometown magazine arrived in your mail? Did you wonder how it could come to you for free? Over the past three years, have you come to look forward to each new issue? Most importantly, have you come to understand our magazine’s motto: Bringing People Together? While preparing for our first issue in August 2018, I never imagined how our magazine would be Bringing People Together during a world pandemic that required people to stay apart. And yet, I am often thanked for our publication’s feel-good features, which circulate what we have in common: our hometown pride of living in Marple. That’s how we bring people together, through this social media in print, which is our hometown magazine made possible by our advertising Sponsors of Marple.

Marple Friends & Neighbors / Bringing People Together
Where Are We?
Regular readers know I always give all the credit for the success of our magazine to the advertising Sponsors seen on these pages. But I’ve never shared that sentiment with this freedom: If you value living in Marple, if you value our hometown magazine and look forward to every new issue, please use your freedom with strong intention to do business first with Marple Sponsors who make our magazine possible. Our Marple Sponsors had the freedom to say no. They had the freedom to advertise their business in many other ways. But they chose to support us, the residents of Marple, by choosing to use a portion of their limited marketing budget to sponsor our community. And in doing so, they make it possible for our hometown magazine to be mailed to your home for free each month. Our Sponsors had the freedom to say no but they said yes. And we also have the freedom to say yes. Let’s say yes to the businesses that clearly demonstrate how important Marple residents are to the success of their business. Let’s use our freedom to buy local, and whenever possible, to choose with strong intention to do business first with the businesses advertising in our hometown magazine. That freedom is what is making Bringing People Together possible for us. M

Publisher’s Note: You can’t “Spot It from the Air” this month, but please spot us a new drone pilot to replace Chris Stack, who retired as our Can You Spot It from the Air Drone Pilot last month. With people coming together more, I want to take this feature to a higher level by bringing local groups and organizations into the picture with aerial photos of people gathering for business or pleasure. Can You Spot It from the Air will return soon with People, Places and Things to see from the air, with a puzzling approach that will still allow you to land safely on the answer to the question: Can You Spot It from the Air? Resident Feature
The Taraschis Love, Sports and Bernie from Broomall’s Hometown Pride Written by Holly Stupak
T
his month we are excited to introduce you to the Taraschis, longtime Broomall residents Shirley and Bernie Sr. If you’re a Philly sports fan and a fan of local sports talk radio, then you may know Bernie Sr. as “Bernie from Broomall,” a frequent caller to 97.5 The Fanatic. With his ability to banter with the sports talk radio show hosts and his “Bernie-isms,” he became a fan favorite and put our hometown on the map for many radio listeners. Born and raised in south Philadelphia, Bernie grew up working in his family’s butcher shop on 13th and McClean, where his uncle was known locally as the inventor of chicken cutlets. Bernie loved his childhood in south Philly, where he attended St. Thomas Aquinas school. “My favorite part of growing up there was playing half ball [aka half-rubber] with my friends in the street and cheering on my favorite Philly sports teams,” said Bernie. In 1960, he decided to enlist in the Army. He served his country for several years, and was stationed in Washington and Alaska. When he returned home from the Army, he went back to work in the family butcher shop. Meanwhile, Shirley Taraschi grew up in north Philadelphia with her parents and brother. After she graduated from Penn Treaty High School, she went on to Dobbins Vo-Tech so she could become a hairdresser. She earned her license to be a hairstylist and worked for several years in Philadelphia beauty salons. In 1969, Bernie met Shirley, in Margate, NJ. Bernie enjoyed going to Margate every year for “jam sessions,” where he could dance and listen to music, but Shirley had to be talked into going to Margate that weekend. Invited by a friend, she was intrigued when her friend mentioned that there was a “nice fellow” she’d like her to meet at the shore. Later that night, Shirley was introduced to that “nice fellow” — Bernie Taraschi — at a bar, and they hit it off instantly. “It was love at first sight!” said Shirley. “Our romance was like a train moving at top speed. We met in April, Bernie proposed to me that July, and we were married in November,” Shirley explained. After they got married, they lived in south Philadelphia for a couple years while Bernie worked at the butcher shop and Shirley continued to work as a hairdresser. But when their 10 Marple Friends & Neighbors / Bringing People Together
Bernie and Shirley Taraschi with their son Bernie Jr. Photo by Sierra Clark Photography, www.SierraClarkPhoto.com
son Bernie Jr. was born in 1971, they felt it was time to look for a house with more space and land. Bernie’s brother lived in Drexel Hill at that time, so the Taraschis were very familiar with Delaware County. “We found the perfect home in Broomall,” said Shirley. “We love the sense of community, and we have great neighbors.” Bernie Sr. eventually took over the butcher shop from his family until it was sold in 1989. From 1990 – 2000, he worked with his uncle at Philadelphia Poultry on Front Street in Philadelphia while Shirley took a break from her job as a hairdresser after 1972 to focus on parenting. While Bernie Jr. was growing up, his dad instilled in him a love of sports. “We went to a lot of Eagles games when I was a kid, and we were on a father/son bowling team,” he said. Bernie Jr. also played baseball for the Marple Township Little League and spent lots of weekends having a catch with his dad on their front lawn. Bernie Jr., who now lives in Newtown Square with his wife Debbie and two daughters, Mia and Lindsay, serves as President of the Newtown Square Petticoat League (NSPL). “I’ve enjoyed watching or coaching my daughters through the NSPL for the past 10 years,” said Bernie Jr. “It's been a great way to be involved in the community.”
It was not surprising to Bernie Jr. when his dad started calling in to sports talk radio about 10 years ago. “He loves to talk about the Eagles and he also loves the spotlight!” he said. Not long after he made his first call to The Mike Missanelli Show, Bernie Sr. became a regular. The 97.5 The Fanatic hosts Mike Missanelli and Anthony Gargano loved his humor and began affectionately referring to him as “Bernie from Broomall.” Bernie Sr. became so beloved by the hosts and such a fan favorite that he was frequently invited to the station and was even given his own station business card. Over the years, he would go into the station, to record bits and sound bites that involved singing Christmas carols, reading Dr. Seuss books and even meeting celebrities like Charles Barkley. “He really got a kick out of it,” said Bernie Jr., “and he loved it when people told him or our family that they had heard him on the radio. He enjoyed the limelight.” Bernie Sr. also loved cooking, and when he went to the radio station, he always brought a cooked meal to share with everyone down there. “Of course, it was chicken! What else?!?” Shirley added, laughing. For the past five years, Bernie Sr. has been living with Parkinson’s disease, a movement disorder with symptoms that include muscle tremors and stiffness, poor balance and coordination. Shirley cares lovingly for her husband and is lucky to have Bernie Jr. and his family nearby, to help out and to walk Bernie and Shirley’s Jack Russell Terrier, Penny. continued on page 12

Resident Feature he called in to 97.5 again after a bit of an absence, and he entertained listeners with how he was handling the pandemic. “Bernie is such a kind, contented soul, and we love having him on as a caller. He has rooted with the sports listeners of Philly,” said 97.5 radio host Mike Missanelli. “When he isn't on the air for a while, I get many inquiries about how he's doing. People just love the guy and always send their best wishes to him. And his classic ‘Huh?!’ sound drop will live forever!”

5 ADVANTAGES of a Gas Fireplace
W
hen you’re enjoying the warm summer sun and vacationing with the family, you rarely think about the cold winter months. But summer is THE BEST TIME to think about and start planning for that cozy fireplace you’ve always wanted to have in your home! If you’ve seriously considered adding a fireplace to your home, you probably thought about the different types of fireplaces available. Here are 5 advantages to choosing a gas fireplace. 1. Increase the Value of Your Home Gas fireplaces add wonderful ambience to any room in your home. They come in many styles and designs, with natural-looking logs and beautiful grates. When it comes time to sell your home, a gas fireplace is often a “Must Have ” on the checklist of many home buyers. 2. Lower Maintenance Wood-burning fireplaces create ashes that need to be removed after every use. They also create creosote build-up, which needs to be cleaned regularly. Although it’s a common misconception that gas fireplaces don’t need maintenance, they do need significantly less maintenance than wood-burning fireplaces. A good installation specialist will be able to give you a gas fireplace maintenance schedule that will allow for safe and efficient operation.
3. Energy Efficient Gas fireplaces are very energy efficient. Unlike wood-burning fireplaces, gas fireplaces give off a constant and steady heat. They supplement your heating system and can reduce your monthly winter heating bill by up to 25%. It’s a common misconception that you need to have a natural gas line connected to your house to install a gas fireplace. An installation specialist can show you a variety of options to get the efficient fireplace you’ve always wanted in your home whether or not you already have a line for natural gas. 4. Good for the Family A gas fireplace can be safer for a family. Potential sparks or embers that fly out from a traditional fireplace can be nerve-racking for parents of young children. Because gas fireplaces are typically operated by a remote control or a wall switch, they significantly reduce the risk of fire. 5. Convenient and Less Costly to Install In addition to being very stylish, gas fireplaces are very clean. They completely eliminate the need to deal with smoke and ash. Gas fireplaces are convenient and less costly to add to your home because they work on venting systems that don’t require a chimney. There are many advantages to having a gas fireplace. If you’ve always wanted a fireplace in your home, it’s smart to start the buying and installation process now so that by the time cold weather returns, you can be inside your home, enjoying your new fireplace. Treating Every Home Like Their Own by Holly Stupak Photos courtesy of Crystal McGovern

f your home’s curb appeal makes a great first impression, everyone will want to see what’s inside. The front door of a house is the key to curb appeal and the heart of the home, so your front door looks as attractive, inviting and unique as possible. And inside your home, interior doors do more than just close off rooms: They are a main component of your interior design. Luckily, Marple area residents have an honest and dependable contractor for door installations and repair service needs right here in our hometown: PB Contracting Company, LLC. Since 2008, PB Contracting has been providing high-quality installations for all types of doors. Their expertise in door installation has made them one of Delaware County's most requested door installers. Located in Broomall, they proudly serve all of Delaware County, Overbrook Park and Wynnefield Heights. They install many kinds of doors, including entry, French and double doors and patio doors. They also offer transom and sidelight installation, lock installation, capping services and some repairs. And while the company is big

enough to do all jobs with expert skill, they’re small enough to do them all with care. “I treat every home like my own,” said Owner Paul Barrett. “Installing doors is more of an enjoyable skilled hobby than a job, so it creates a happier atmosphere for me and my customers,” he added. Paul grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, until he was 20 when his family moved to the United States. Having attended trade school in Jamaica, he began working here in the United States as a contractor, installing high-end kitchens and bathrooms. “For many years, I liked renovating kitchens and baths, but those jobs often took several months to complete,” explained Paul. “Ultimately, I realized that I prefer jobs with a quicker turnaround time. I had a lot of experience installing doors, and was able to start my own company. I also really enjoy what I do. It doesn’t really feel like a job when you have fun doing it!” Paul met his wife Crystal McGovern in 2010. She now serves as PB Contracting’s Office Manager. She handles scheduling, financials, and the day-to-day operations. Born in Bucks Paul Barrett working on a local door installation project

do when they’re older,” said Crystal. “When kids help out in a family business, they get to learn a lot about organization, multi-tasking and problem solving!”
With Crystal’s background in retail and business management and Paul’s hands-on experience installing and repairing doors, Crystal and Paul make a great team. “We work really well together,” said Crystal. “Before we take on every new project, we fully explain the process and expectations to the customer, and give them different options, to help them make the best decision for their budget and their home.”
In April, Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine welcomed PB Contracting as a new Sponsor and Expert Contributor. “We wanted to sponsor our hometown magazine to get the word out that experienced and reliable people right here in our community have the skillset and dedication to provide a service to fit your home improvement needs,” said Crystal. “We hope to satisfy the needs in our community and meet as many Marple residents as we can.” PB Contracting has also sponsored local events and hopes to do more in the future. “Now that things are opening up again and more events are happening, we look forward to more sponsorship opportunities in the Marple community,” Crystal added. Installing doors in this area requires experience, patience and knowledge of the many styles of residential properties here. Door installation is one of the most difficult home remodeling projects. Whether you’re looking to repair or replace your front door, choose our Sponsor and Expert Contributor whose skills have earned him the respect of many other contractors because they know that door installation is an art. The Barrett Family (L-R) Paul, Crystal, Paul Jr., Hailee and Alanna
Paul and Crystal have three children: Hailee (8), Alanna (6) and Paul Jr. (3). After living in their first home in Aldan for several years, they moved to their forever home in Broomall in 2019. “We love Broomall because it’s a nice quiet community and not as busy as some other towns,” said Crystal. “And the schools here are great!” “After installing a lot of doors and working in homes in Broomall and Newtown Square,” Paul added, “I realized how much I like the homes here, especially ranch homes, which aren’t always easy to find.” The oldest Barrett children, Hailee and Alanna, both attend elementary school in Marple and play soccer here. Big fans of Hershey Park, the family tries to take at least two trips there each year, one in the summer and one during the Christmas holidays. It’s been quite a busy year for PB Contracting with many homeowners choosing to do more home improvement projects. But when Paul and Crystal do get downtime, they love being outdoors with their kids. And when Paul gets to unwind, he watches old Westerns and Kung Fu movies or listens to his favorite music: Reggae. Someday, Crystal and Paul hope to involve their children in the business. “We want to teach them the skills and work ethic they’ll need to pursue and accomplish whatever they want to

hen the pandemic hit last spring, Broomall resident Scott Noye found himself at a career crossroads. “I was working in the restaurant and hospitality industry when the coronavirus started,” said Scott. “Because of the impact it had on that industry, I had to reinvent myself.” Looking for a way to combine his work experience with the things he loves, he founded Chef Dad’s Table, local cooking classes for children and teens. “I always wanted to be a teacher. and now I get to share what I’ve learned over the years. My life has come full circle,” he added. As a kid growing up in Boston, Scott was inspired to learn how to cook from his aunts and grandmothers. “My mom didn’t really like cooking, but I paid a lot of attention to my aunts and grandmothers in the kitchen, and I enjoyed testing out their recipes,” said Scott. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Hospitality Management from Johnson & Wales University, he worked in different hotels along the east coast before settling in Broomall. He has lived here since 1995, and it’s where he has raised his children: Marshall, Sarah and Natalie. “I love the Broomall

area. I love my neighbors and my neighborhood. It’s got great accessibility to Philadelphia, New York, Washington, DC, and the Jersey shore,” said Scott. “And my children got a great education at Marple Newtown High School.” Scott was working in hospitality management at Widener University when the pandemic hit and the university had to close temporarily. “I saw this time as a unique opportunity to try something new,” he explained. In the fall of 2020, Scott began tutoring students and helping parents who needed help with their children’s virtual learning. He used cooking and baking to help with academic skills, and his students enjoyed his science experiments using food.

Realizing kids of all ages could benefit from these cooking and baking lessons, Scott took a chance and started holding virtual cooking classes in January 2021, gradually moving to an in-person format when social distancing restrictions eased up. “With many activities and sports on hold, parents were really looking for things their kids could do,” he said. “And the great thing about cooking and baking is that the students are doing more than just having fun in the kitchen; they’re actually learning. When we measure ingredients, we are using our math skills. When baking, there are chemical reactions going on. They’re also learning how to work in teams and building friendships.” Until he secures a permanent location for Chef Dad’s Table, Scott’s classes are currently held at Congregation Beth El – Ner Tamid and the Community Lodge in Broomall. This past year, he was also able to rent space for his classes through a new concept called Cloud Kitchens: Restaurants rent out their space during off hours or, if they’ve had to temporarily close. It’s a good way for them to earn some revenue. Classes typically hold about 15 students, and are divided into three age groups: 3 – 5, 6 – 10, and 11 – 16. This spring, Scott’s cooking students picked a region and created recipes from that area. “Studying the cuisine and culture of different regions in the world makes for a terrific geography lesson!” said Scott.

The most common type of headache is the tension headache. It’s estimated that 80 – 90% of the U.S. population suffers from tension headaches at some point in their lives. Tension headaches are typically related to abnormal posture, muscular tightness, joint stiffness and restricted motion in the body. Dysfunctional patterns of movement and posture affect how much tension and stress your body holds. The body must compensate for these dysfunctional patterns by any means necessary, and it accomplishes this by altering tension points. Your brain and nervous system must compensate for this dysfunction by altering blood flow, muscle movement patterns and breathing, which can lead to tension headaches. The second most common type of headache is the migraine headache, which affects approximately 16 – 17% of the population. Migraine headaches are far more debilitating than tension-type headaches. Chiropractic treatments get to the CAUSE of the headache by helping to normalize muscle tension, restore joint range of motion and optimize postural control of the head and neck, thereby reducing the workload that your muscles must apply just to keep your head up during the day. Proper spinal alignment and muscle control helps give the body a fighting chance of avoiding a tension headache. Other Ways to Avoid Headaches: • Get proper sleep. • Have your blood pressure and medications checked. • Use proper ergonomic posture at your workstation. • Limit prolonged neck bending for cellphone use. • Manage your stress. • Breathe from your belly, not from your chest. • Exercise and stretch regularly. • Drink a lot of water! If you suffer from headaches and are tired of taking pain-relieving medication day after day, chiropractic treatments can help you regain the quality of life you desire — pain free and medication free. ou know that giant water heater tank in your home? Do you know you can get hot water from a much smaller tank that’s practically the size of a suitcase? Replacing a water heater can be a costly expense, so it’s important to consider the efficiency, cost, and expected longevity of a new one. Traditional storage water heaters pull from the tank water that is constantly being reheated to remain at a desired temperature. (A typical gas-fired tank wastes 40–50% of the fuel it burns!) Tankless water heaters are able to produce hot water on demand: Water that gets pulled from the source passes through a heating element on it to the faucet. Consider these PROs and CONs of a tankless water heater. PROs Going tankless gives your home an endless supply of hot water. A tankless water heater can deliver up to THREE gallons of hot water every minute, so you won’t have to wait long for hot water to start coming out of the faucet. Tankless water heaters save a ton of space. They’ve also proven to be very energy efficient and can save you 27–50% compared to the cost to power tank-type heaters. And tankless heaters can perform effectively for 20–30 years, a much longer lifespan than the typical 10–15 years of storage water heaters.
CONs Switching to a tankless water heater does have all those very positive benefits, but to fully understand the decision to switch, it’s important to also know the possible downsides. One is that if your water heater runs on electricity and you lose power due to a storm or a downed power line, you won’t have any hot water. A cold shower can surely wake you up! Tankless water heaters also tend to have some output challenges when you want hot water for two or more reasons at the same time. For example, if the dishwasher is running and someone is taking a shower at the same time, the water output may decrease noticeably. The last downside is that the initial cost for a tankless water heater and its installation can tend to be a bit pricey. If electricity is your only option for powering any type of water heater, the installation cost may be even higher than usual if your home’s electrical system must be upgraded to handle the energy requirements of a tankless water heater. Tankless water heaters are still a fairly new concept, so many plumbers do not yet know how to properly install them. Overall, however, going tankless will provide you with the convenience of getting hot water quickly while staying energy efficient. The installation cost of going tankless may seem intimidating but it will save you money and time in the long run. M

History Spotlight
Buried Treasure Written by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of the Marple Historical Society

harles Clark knew from a fairly young age that he wanted to be a photographer. Born in 1880, by 1900 he was listing himself as a “photographer.” In 1907, Charles was employed as a staff photographer for the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, the largest circulating newspaper in the area. “In Philadelphia, nearly everyone reads the Bulletin.” Clark’s work was seen by a lot of local readers. By 1918, Clark and his wife and two daughters settled in at a house at Summit and Broomall Avenues. Charles could walk two blocks, to take the trolley into town. In September 1918 at age 38, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Signal Corps as a photographer. He never made it “over there,” as the war ended months later. He took a new job, as a newsreel cameraman for Fox Movietones, the company that provided silent video clips to be shown in movie theaters, between features. Charles worked for them for the next 11 years. His work survives: The Fox Movietone archives are housed at the University of South Carolina. You can search that collection by cameraman, “Clark”, to see all of the interesting events he saw in that job.
The young studio photographer with his camera
In 1930, Clark opened up his photography studio in Media, but also was a staff photographer for The Philadelphia Inquirer. The family still lived at the same home on Summit Avenue. He was employed during the Great Depression. Life was good – and then it was not. Charles was diagnosed with lung cancer, and was taken within weeks, two days before Christmas 1942.

His life’s work – photographs and negatives that chronicled what he saw in life – was filed away in what now fills five milk crates and three old suitcases. They sat in the basement of the Summit Road house for years, while outside a local boy, young Seth Pancoast, cut the Clark’s lawn in the 1950s. When Betty Clark died in 2001, Seth volunteered to take the old boxes of negatives. They went into his basement, awaiting the right moment to see the light of day. The right moment came last week, when Seth loaned them to me to figure out what is there. What to Know About Durable Flooring Options
W
ell-chosen flooring that offers durable resistance to spills and stains, scratches and other signs of wear, aging and damage can not only add to your home’s ambiance and comfort, it helps maintain your home’s market value. Here is a guide to understanding different types of durable flooring and their strengths in protecting the unspoiled comfort and beauty of your home. CARPET It helps to know how stain-resistant carpet works. Any carpet — regardless of its fiber content — can be chemically treated to enhance its stain resistance. But some carpet fibers, such as nylon, can allow spills to permanently attach to the dye sites in the carpet. So, look for fibers constructed without dye sites and in which permanent protection is built into the carpet fibers, not layered on later. It can increase and maintain your enjoyment of your home now and for years to come. LAMINATE FLOORING Although laminate may be visually indistinguishable from hardwood, it is a synthetic product. Its advanced construction and protective wear layer provide a waterproof system to withstand moisture near plumbing. And its incredible durability and scratch and stain resistance make it suitable for many areas in your home. LUXURY VINYL FLOORING Vinyl flooring is made from 100% plastic. It is sometimes confused with laminate flooring, but vinyl’s differences in material and installation forms contribute to its extreme durability and versatility of appearance. Vinyl flooring resembles wood yet
contains no wood, which increases its inherent water resistance. High-quality options are also extremely resistant to scratches and staining. Sheet vinyl comes in large rolls that are cut to size across the room. Luxury vinyl planks and tiles snap together or glue down, for easy installation, and can even be used with grout, to give an incredibly realistic tile or stone appearance. HARDWOOD In the search for durable flooring, hardwood floors can be overlooked. Typically, wear, stains and discolorations are concerns for hardwood floors. There are a few factors to consider when you’d like to add hardwood floors to your home but traffic patterns in your home would challenge hardwood's durability. If that’s the case, choose one of the harder, more durable species of hardwood, like hickory or maple. Also, look for lower-gloss finishes, and consider rustic designs to help hide wear. TILE The ultimate option in durability, tile’s manufacturing process produces an extremely hard, scratch-, moisture- and stain-resistant material. Some tiles offer enhanced durability, which is infused during manufacturing. It won’t ever wash or wear away. The exceptional ability of tile to withstand wear, damage, growths and stains contributes to its popularity for use inside and outside the home. M

iding public transportation to and from her job in healthcare, Broomall resident Arlene Lomazoff-Marron liked to study strangers. “I’d see someone on a train and try to imagine what their life was like and what they did for a living. I loved making up stories in my head,” she said. “There is always more to people than meets the eye. Everyone has secrets.” Arlene always had a vivid imagination and was known for her great storytelling, but the last time she considered writing a book was when she was an adolescent. Then at age 63 she discovered that you’re never too old to follow your dreams. It was one week before retiring from her job as a nurse auditor and a 40-year career in healthcare that Arlene was inspired to write her first book. “A coworker said something that really stuck with me. She told me to do something on my bucket list. I blurted out that I wanted to write a novel,” said Arlene. “Then I thought to myself, why did I say that?” But less than a year after that conversation occurred, Arlene had written and published her first novel, Beneath a Blanket of Snow. Growing up in northeast Philadelphia, Arlene considered studying writing in college to become an author. But a volunteer job as a candy striper in high school got her interested in

medicine and sent her on a different career path. She went on to pursue a nursing degree and graduated from the Thomas Jefferson School of Nursing in 1977. Since then she’s had a varied career as a Registered Nurse, working in local hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. In 1999 Arlene married her husband Gerry and they raised their blended family of five here in Broomall. Considering herself a late bloomer, Arlene said she learned to play piano, play Mah Jongg and become an avid bike rider in her 50s. So, it wasn’t surprising that she’d write her first book later in life. After she retired from her job in healthcare case management in December 2019, she didn’t waste any time starting her bucket list item. She took a couple of online writing courses and began writing for hours a day. When the pandemic hit in March 2020, Arlene found herself with even more time to write, and

by Memorial Day she had a draft of her novel: Beneath a Blanket of Snow. The novel’s main character seems to have it all—a successful career and a beautiful family—until he nearly throws it all away. The book explores the question: Is everything what it seems from the outside? “I had the idea for the book for a long time,” explained Arlene. “I’ve learned over the years that even when you are close with someone, whether it’s a spouse or friend, they don’t always reveal everything about themselves. They often choose to hide details about their life or their past.” The title of the book came to her during one of her daily yoga sessions. “My mind and body were relaxed,” said Arlene. “I was cooling down, when the title just came to me.” With the book now finished, she wanted someone to read it over and see if she had really accomplished something. A friend, and fellow writer, read her draft and was impressed. “Having another writer bless the book and let me know it was a good read was the encouragement I needed,” she said. In July 2020, she self-published her novel on Amazon and was overwhelmed by the response to the book. “The biggest thrill for me after publishing the book was having both of my book clubs choose Beneath a Blanket of Snow for our monthly picks,” she said proudly.

said Arlene. “You never know where your dreams will take you!” Both of Arlene’s novels are available from Amazon, as e-books, paperbacks, and hardbacks. They’re also available on Kindle Unlimited. M
The support and positive reviews of Beneath a Blanket of Snow inspired her to keep writing. During November 2020, which happened to be National Novel Writing Month, Arlene challenged herself to write 50,000 words and by January she finished her second novel, If We Had Known, published in April 2021. In her second novel, Arlene explores the question of fate. Is fate linked to circumstance or are other forces as work? Hoping to inspire young writers, Arlene is also a volunteer at Mighty Writers, an organization that encourages reading and writing among youth in the Philadelphia and Camden communities. And her second novel, If We Had Known is dedicated to her seven grandchildren. “I told them to keep reading!”

July is National Grilling Month Written by Holly Stupak
B
ring your family and friends together and fire up the grill: July is National Grilling Month! Backyard barbecues, festival parking lots and fire pits on the beach all become places to create delicious meals over a gas grill, coal bed or wood fire. But sometimes the traditional American BBQ fare — burgers and hot dogs — can lose their appeal.
different knobs.” Other advantages of gas grills: There’s no messy charcoal or ashes to clean up. And when it’s time to call it a night, you just turn the knobs off and that’s it!
So, how can we liven up our gatherings to offer tasty options? We asked the Experts and Sponsors of Marple Friends & Neighbors for their advice.
Outdoor barbecuing has officially become an extension of the kitchen, due in large part to social distancing requirements over the past 16 months. Grilling is a great way to bring friends and family together and to celebrate returning to “life as we knew it.” Scott Magness, Owner of Scott’s Fireplace Products, is an Expert on how to make grilling literally push-button easy. “Compared to charcoal grills and wood fire pits, gas grills and gas fire pits are not messy, and can start with the push of a button,” Scott said. His Manager Ray pointed out that a wood fire pit requires prepping kindling, and wood fires and charcoal grills both typically require a lot of shifting the wood or charcoal around, to maintain the desired temperature. “A variety of cuisines can easily be prepared on a gas grill,” said Ray, “because temperatures can be controlled with pinpoint accuracy and can have a hot side and a cooler side by simply turning

If your guests prefer traditional hamburgers and hot dogs, and you want ideas on beefing up your burger, consider the advice of our Sponsor Delco Steaks, “The Champs of Steaks.” “We buy our farm-fresh meat directly from Chambersburg, PA,” said Steve Reynolds, Managing Partner of Delco Steaks. “For a delicious burger, cooking it on a flat top keeps the juices in and it won’t dry out. A perfect seasoning always helps, too. And I’m a big fan of topping a burger with Cooper sharp cheese and onions!”
But what if you’re looking for a lighter alternative? Grill some fish like tuna and salmon. For advice on serving up tender, flaky fish, we turned to Chris Posse, Head Chef over at Casey’s Public House. Chris said that July is the perfect time to grill tuna because market prices are typically down. “I like to marinate

tuna filets in a little bit of olive oil and vinegar,” said Chris. “Then I’ll heat up the grill to 500° and cook them for three to four minutes on each side and serve them medium-rare.” In the summer, Chris likes to slice the filets and serve them on top of a healthy green salad. “Salmon is a little tricky since it’s much more fragile than tuna,” Chris warned. “Make sure you oil up your grill first so your filets don’t stick.” He explained that he also cooks salmon on a 500° grill, but for one minute longer on each side. Chris said that he loves to serve salmon in the summer with seasonal fruit salsas such as watermelon salsa and pineapple salsa. Sounds delicious!
Here are a few more delicious options for your next barbecue: • Grilled chicken is fantastic after you’ve marinaded it for at least 30 minutes. While grilling, keep basting it with the marinade so it stays moist.
• Mushrooms are the new burger. A huge Portobello makes a delicious meat substitute, perfect for the vegetarians in the family. Sprinkle some shredded mozzarella cheese on top during the last few minutes of grilling and season well. • Kabobs let you have a small amount of meat with extra vegetables. Cherry tomatoes, bell pepper chunks, button mushrooms and pearl onions are traditional, but consider adding fresh pineapple or mango, chunks of zucchini and even sweet potato cubes as a way to brighten the meal and add nutrients. • Pizza night can be healthy and fun on the grill, too. Oil the grill so the dough doesn't stick. Prepare homemade pizza dough or thaw a premade ball or disc of pizza dough. Roll the dough into a circle as thick or thin as you’d like. Flour both sides lightly so they’re not too sticky. Place the circular dough on a 500° grill and close the lid. Grill for 3 – 4 minutes or until slightly brown on the bottom. Flip the dough onto a cookie sheet and add ingredients (sauce, cheese, toppings), then return it to the grill. Lower the temperature to 350°, close the lid and grill the pizza for another 2 – 3 minutes. For a healthier twist, try a whole wheat crust brushed with olive oil. Your next backyard bash can be fun and healthy, leaving room for the occasional guilty S’more. So, what are you waiting for? Fire up the grill, enjoy some delicious food, great company and get into the true American spirit! M

Your Summer Road Trip Essentials It’s been declared: Road trips are going to dominate this summer! After a year of COVID-19, it’s not surprising that traveling by car is this summer’s preferred and safe travel method. Here are a few things you should ensure are in their best shape before you embark on your trip, even if it’s just a trip down the shore! TIRES: Maintaining your tires can yield better fuel economy, and with rising gas prices, you’ll want to squeeze every mile you can out of your tank. But tire maintenance doesn’t just mean inflating them to the correct pressure. You’ll also want to check for damage, uneven wear and tread depth.
Plan for the Worst: A flat tire! If you have a spare tire, make sure it’s in the same, good condition as the other four. Don’t forget to check your jack and other tools, and store them in a place easy to access in case of a flat tire.
A/C: When you think road trip, you probably think top down, music up, wind in your face. While that’s all good and fun, for many it’s not the most preferable way to drive for more than a few hours. Making sure your A/C is working at its best is a no-brainer for the summer, even if you don’t plan on taking a road trip. Plan for the Worst: Don’t wait until your A/C breaks. Get it inspected now to have a cool, uninterrupted summer. If you’ve been noticing that the air isn’t getting as cold as it used to or less air is coming out, have it looked at by your mechanic. BATTERY: Did you know that a flat or faulty battery is the most common cause of a breakdown? Visually inspecting your battery won’t tell you if it’s on the verge of failing, but it can show you if your battery is in need of replacement. When visually inspecting your battery, look for corrosion on the terminals, cracked casing or frayed cables.
Plan for the Worst: Your car’s battery dies! You can prepare for a dead battery by ensuring your jumper cables are in good condition. If you expect to be driving on isolated country roads, be extra-prepared by including a portable jump starter in your emergency kit, to be able to give yourself a jump-start without the need for another vehicle.
Don’t wait until the day of your trip to inspect these things. Plan ahead and get your vehicle inspected by your local mechanic so you can feel confident on every road trip — even the spontaneous ones! M 28 Marple Friends & Neighbors / Bringing People Together

Cooling Options for Your Home
W
arm temperatures are finally here again, and now you have to deal with keeping your house cool on the hottest days.
years with minimal cost beyond the initial installation. You will need to discuss this option with a professional who’s wellversed in this technology.
Have you spent years with open windows and fans that did little or nothing to keep you cool? If you’d like to install a system that provides cooling for your family, you have several options.
For help in making a decision about the best way to keep your home cool and comfortable each summer, contact a reputable HVAC contractor who can help you keep the temperature down as the days heat up. M
CENTRAL COOLING If you have a furnace already, this option is the simplest and most common choice because the required ductwork is already in place. It consists of a duct coil connected to an outdoor condensing unit. The biggest benefit is that you can cool your entire house, which helps with efficiency and cooling costs.
Maintain Your HVAC System During Every Season
DUCTLESS MINI SPLIT If you don’t have a central furnace with ductwork, a ductless mini split can provide cooling to one room at a time. If you have an open concept layout, one unit can take care of your kitchen, living room and dining room if it’s sized right. Smaller rooms will need separate units, and that’s the #1 downside of a decentralized system. Multi split units, which have one outdoor unit and multiple indoor units, can serve most or all of your house depending on how much you are willing to spend and how many spaces need cooling.

WINDOW UNIT Window units are packaged cooling systems that steal a portion of your window to provide cooling to that particular space. You are limited to only the space in which the unit is installed. Window units are typically not very aesthetically pleasing. GEOTHERMAL In general, geothermal cooling works hand in hand with heating, so if the climate where you live is very hot, you may not benefit from this system except under certain circumstances. Geothermal cooling is expensive, but with the right equipment and conditions, it can benefit you and your family for many
