Glass Shower Doors: Which Is Right for You?

enovating or adding a full bathroom to your home can be stressful, not to mention expensive. When it comes to choosing between a glass door shower enclosure or a shower curtain, price, aesthetics and functionality should be carefully considered along with the room’s design and layout.

Glass doors have many advantages to consider, especially if you’re installing a walk-in shower. Glass doors and panels will make your bathroom space brighter and appear larger. The February Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Luke Carden, a Senior at Malvern Prep! Luke received a Certificate of Achievement, and looks forward to enjoying his award: a “Pizza Bowl” party courtesy of Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this program.

Luke, a native of Newtown Square, has attended Malvern Prep since 8th grade. His positive orientation experience as a Freshman there motivated him to want to give back. So, as a Junior, he volunteered and was selected by the school’s Adelphia Society to participate in their two-day orientation program for the new Freshman class.

Luke has also served communities in Philadelphia and Camden, by going with his classmates and his school’s service moderator, to provide meals for the homeless and poor in those areas. And he has participated in Malvern Prep’s food drives that help the local food banks replenish their pantries.

A lacrosse player since preschool and a lacrosse travel team player since 5th grade, Luke has enjoyed serving as a member of Malvern Prep’s lacrosse team, including the Varsity team in his Junior and Senior years. As a member of his school’s Athletes for Christ Club, he discussed and then put into action ways athletes can demonstrate their connection to Christ, especially on the sports field.

Luke also enjoys being a member of his school’s Young Politicians Club, which discusses current political events and how political action can accomplish social goals to improve lives.

A recent project to build a 1971 R5 Yamaha motorcycle with a friend from school got Luke interested in a possible career in Mechanical Engineering. He also enjoyed his recent Economics class and may consider a Business Administration major in college.

Over the holidays, several of my friends and neighbors from Marple Township, and also some from Newtown Township, shared how much they enjoyed their hometown magazine. And then I realized that we can be Bringing People Together even more so, across town, by sharing this news.

Last month, I also shared news of how our online presence is developing when I asked in this feature: Should we begin a Sports Section in our magazine? Again, I am calling on all Citizen Journalists (really anyone with a camera phone who knows how to type out a story). Judge John P. Capuzzi Sr. and Judge Barry C. Dozor: Marple Neighbors and Colleagues Serving our Community

T

he Honorable John P. Capuzzi, Sr. and the Honorable Barry C. Dozor are Marple residents, Delaware County judges and friends whose paths originally crossed many years ago when they were on opposite sides of the court. John Capuzzi met Barry Dozor in the 1980s when John was serving as President of Yeadon Borough Council and Barry was an attorney representing a client. Despite being on opposite sides, they impressed each other with their knowledge of the law and thankfully the matter was resolved. Their paths would eventually cross again, both professionally and personally, while raising their families in Broomall.

In 2012, John Capuzzi was sworn in for a 10-year term as a Delaware County Court of Common Pleas Judge. “It’s a pleasure serving people,” John said. “The most rewarding thing about this position is that I can instill change, especially in younger people.” Barry Dozor, who was appointed to the same court in 2001, said he can’t wait to get to work every day.

“These past 20 years as a judge have provided me with the opportunity to contribute to the justice system and the community,” Barry said. “It’s challenging, interesting, and I learn something new every day.”

John Capuzzi’s road to becoming a judge began as a Senior Deputy Attorney General in the Torts Litigation Section of the 8

Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office. During that time, he litigated major complex cases for various state agencies. From 2006 to 2011, he was a partner in the law firm of Imperatrice, Amarant, Capuzzi & Bell, P.C., where he specialized in civil litigation. He also served as Marple Township’s First Ward Commissioner from 2000 - 2005, and in 2006 he served as the Magisterial District Judge for Marple Township and Haverford Township.

After graduating from Monsignor Bonner High School, John earned a BA from La Salle College. He then studied nuclear medicine at the Philadelphia School of Nuclear Medicine Technology, after which he worked for several years in that field in local medical centers while he also pursued his MBA at La Salle. John’s expertise and achievements in nuclear medicine technology during those years were widely recognized.

While pursuing his MBA, John’s law class instructor, Magistrate Judge Tullio Leomporra, encouraged him to go to law school and even wrote John's recommendation letter. In 1988, John obtained his Juris Doctor from the Delaware Law School of Widener University.

During law school, John served as President of Yeadon Borough Council from 1982 through 1989, where he made many positive contributions to the community, including renovating

the 50-year-old borough hall and paying off the sizable debt.

He is also a life member and past President of Yeadon Fire Company No. 1 and was active in the company for 30 years.

“When I was 16, a neighbor strongly suggested that I join the fire company,” John explained. “It ended up becoming one of the most rewarding things I’ve done. It taught me discipline and teamwork, and I made lifelong friendships.”

For the past three years, John has served as Chairman of the Criminal Justice Advisory Board, a group committed to improving the effectiveness, efficiency and accountability of Criminal Justice in Delaware County. “It’s a team effort,” he explained. “We are always looking to develop ways to improve how we address criminal justice issues.”

One of John’s proudest achievements as a judge has been the Second Chance Court, a voluntary pre-trial bail program.

Established in 2017, the program helps tackle the opioid epidemic and the growing problem of substance abuse by giving those struggling with addiction a second chance. John said that the program evolved as judges recognized that people needed help with their addiction when initially arrested. “We identify people who are suffering from opioid addiction at the time of their arrest, and provide an immediate opportunity for their voluntary entry into a treatment program as a condition of bail,” explained John. “It’s rewarding to see those who entered the program come back months later and how they’re turning their life around,” he added.

Outside of the courtroom, John Capuzzi is a dedicated family man. He met his wife, Sharon, a registered nurse, while he was working in the nuclear medicine field. They have three children — John, Jr., Tim and Gabrielle — and five grandchildren. continued on page 10

Resident Feature While raising their kids, John and Sharon spent many nights and weekends watching them play sports on the various Marple ball fields. “We also loved taking vacations at the beach,” recalled John, “but of course our vacations were always planned around baseball tournaments and lacrosse or football games, and we loved watching our kids play.”

The Capuzzis have lived in Broomall since their children were in elementary school. “My brother Jim was living here, and we were impressed by the great schools and recreation facilities.

It’s a great place to raise children,” said John. “We also liked that it was close to public transportation and shopping. What more could you ask for!”

Judge John Capuzzi’s chambers are next door to his friend and Broomall neighbor, Judge Barry Dozor. Before Barry became a judge, he was a practicing Delaware County attorney for 26 years. He also served as a Marple Township Commissioner, a Municipal Solicitor for the Boroughs of Prospect Park, Norwood, Collingdale and Tinicum Township, as well as serving as a Zoning Hearing Board Solicitor for Marple Township and the Borough of Darby.

he also went to Delaware Law School of Widener University and received his Juris Doctor in 1975. From 1977 to 2001, Barry was in private practice as a partner in the Law Offices of Dozor and Auslander where his areas of practice were civil and criminal litigation, juvenile and orphan court matters, business law, personal injury, worker’s compensation, medical malpractice, real estate and domestic relations.

From 1984–2001, Barry served as a Marple Township Commissioner and was also President of the Marple Township Board of Commissioners for three years. “Serving as a Marple Township Commissioner for five terms was a fabulous opportunity to contribute to my community. I’m proud of the work we did improving the Parks and Recreation areas and saving open space, especially creating and designing the Veterans Memorial Park on Lawrence Rd and building the Paxon Hollow Country Club facility. It’s nice to drive through Marple and realize the positive effect you’ve had on the landscape,” said Barry.

Since becoming a judge in 2001, Barry has served in the family, criminal and civil sections in the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas and has received numerous awards, including the Family Law Section Appreciation Award from both the PA Bar Association and the Delaware County Bar Association, and also the Delaware County Bar Association’s President’s Special Recognition Award. “Being a judge has given me the opportunity to stay young,” said Barry. “It keeps me open minded and academic.”

Barry has been an active member of the Marple community since he and his wife Rose moved here in 1973. Barry and Rose met at West Chester University where Rose studied Psychology.

During Barry’s first winter break from law school, they got married. After graduating from law school, Barry worked in his practice while Rose worked as a Counselor at Delaware County Community College, where she still works today.

They eventually moved to a new home near Russell Elementary where they raised their three children: Josh, Ian and Courtney.

“Our children put Rose and I on a path of involvement in the community, We jumped in head first,” said Barry. When their children were young, Barry served on Hillview Nursery School’s Board of Directors and helped purchase the land for the school.

Barry and Rose were also active in the Russell PTO, the Marple Township Little League, the Boy Scouts and at Temple Sholom in Broomall. “Marple is a really special place,” said Barry. “It has a warm, hometown feel. It’s a fabulous place to call home, with wonderful friends and neighbors!”

One of Barry Dozor’s favorite Marple traditions is the 4th of July Parade. Barry and John often ride the parade route together.

“The path of our lives continues to be woven together,” said Barry. “Now, John is the first and last person I see every day at work. When you work alongside colleagues who provide you with advice and assistance, you don’t take that for granted.”

E

veryone knows that pets provide companionship and unconditional love. Dog owners know the joy of this love whenever they enter the house: Their dog is always thrilled to see them. Cat owners know the joy of unconditional love when even the most aloof cat curls up next to them and lays a paw (hopefully with nails tucked) on their leg, in a sign of trust and love.

The year 2020 brought us the COVID-19 virus and its many challenges. Some were weirdly amusing, such as why toilet paper was hoarded during a respiratory pandemic. Some challenges were heartbreakingly sad, such as figuring out how to safely quarantine from loved ones. New phrases became part of our everyday vocabulary: social distancing, quarantine pod, contact tracing, aerosol droplets, flatten the curve. But as those phrases entered almost every conversation, something else tagged along and gave nuance: anxiety, loneliness, sadness.

Thanks to the incredible advances in medicine, we are headed in the right direction towards getting this virus under control as vaccines become more available. But what can relieve the anxiety, loneliness and sadness until we return to “normal”?

The answer may be right in front of you, lying in a shaft of sunlight, snoozing on the sofa.

Owning a pet enhances one’s life in many ways. Pets, especially dogs and cats, can reduce stress, anxiety and depression, and ease loneliness just by being there, ready to be stroked or scratched behind the ear. In addition, petting a dog or cat can even improve our cardiovascular health: Interacting with animals has been shown to decrease levels of cortisol (a stress-related hormone) and lower blood pressure. The bond that people feel with animals further enhances their emotional health as evidenced by the lucrative pet food business and the preponderance of doggy daycares.

The reality is that not everyone can — or wants to — own a pet due to a host of reasons such as financial, time constraints, allergies or preferences (think shedding on the sofa). However, those without pets have many opportunities to interact with animals: Join a friend on their dog’s daily walks or volunteer

at an animal shelter and pet the cats waiting to be adopted. In addition to having a reason to leave the house and still maintain COVID safety measures (dogs and cats really don’t care if you are wearing a mask or gloves), a 10-minute petting session is a win-win for the human and the animal.

In 2020, we’ve experienced unimaginable stress and loneliness.

Dave grew up in Springfield, Delaware County, and graduated from Springfield High School. He then attended the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Sciences, where he studied entrepreneurial small business administration. For many years after college, Dave worked as a construction worker and also as a waterproofing estimator. He soon realized that he had a keen eye for finding water leaks that others could not find.

In 1991, David formed his own business, Weatherproofing Specialties. “There’s a saying that it takes 10,000 hours of doing a task to become a professional,” said Dave. “After 5 years of 50 hours a week and 52 weeks a year, I’d say I’ve more than accumulated those hours!” Two years ago, he added a partner to his company, Julius Pacala, a skilled carpenter, who as a young man built a log cabin in the woods of eastern Europe.

Forty years ago, while Julius was on holiday, he climbed the Alps, to escape eastern Europe. He found freedom in Austria, and later made his journey to the United States and became an American citizen. Dave and Julius merged the names of their two companies, Weatherproofing Specialists and A+, to form Weatherproofing Plus.

Weatherproofing Plus is unique in that not many other weatherproofing companies will send out the co-Owner to give an estimate and do all service repairs. “Many companies may hire specific salespeople to sell a specific product solution,” said Dave. “Some contractors may present solutions and bring you to the conclusion that a product they install is all you need. I get to the root of the problem and offer different options. and always ones that are, if possible, the most cost-effective.”

Hildacy Preserve: Marple’s Hidden Gem Written by Holly Stupak

N

estled between Rte 252 and Palmers Mill Rd is Hildacy Preserve, a hidden treasure in Marple that offers visitors a variety of lush, seasonal vegetation and an abundance of wildlife. With two miles of unpaved hiking trails, it’s perfect for exploring. And if you happen to be an avid birdwatcher, you’re likely to spot some of the preserve’s bird species, which include Eastern Bluebirds, American Kestrels, Indigo Buntings and Red-shouldered Hawks.

The 55-acre preserve, now known as Hildacy Preserve, was originally the homeland of the Lenape peoples. In 1683 the land was part of a 300-acre land grant from William Penn to a local tanner and his family. Over time, the land was cleared, and by the late 1800s, only a small group of trees remained.

The name “Hildacy” came from Hilda and Cyril Fox, the couple who bought the property in 1936 and lived on it for almost 40 years. As land began being developed all around the region, they wanted to keep the land open for wildlife. So in

1981, Hilda donated the preserve to Natural Lands, a nonprofit organization that saves open space, cares for nature and connects people to the outdoors in Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. “Hilda and Cyril Fox raised horses and German Shepherds there, and considered the property their country sanctuary,” explained Kirsten Werner, Natural Lands’ Senior Director of Communications. “They donated the farm to Natural Lands so we could continue their conservation work.”

Since 1981, Natural Lands has worked to restore Hildacy Preserve’s wetlands, woodlands and meadows (native grasses like big and little bluestem, Indian-grass, and switchgrass) to a natural state. They also planted hundreds of trees along the edge of Crum Creek, which runs through the preserve. The trees, which provide shade and food that help fish and other aquatic species, also improves water quality by filtering the nutrients and sediments transported by surface and groundwater flowing into the creek.

The stone farmhouse at Hildacy, which dates back to 1806 and was renovated in 2001, serves as Natural Lands’ regional headquarters. A smaller building on property that was once a domestic springhouse is now the Preserve Manager’s home.

Hildacy is one of 43 preserves and one public garden owned and managed by Natural Lands, which was founded in 1953 and originally called the Philadelphia Conservationists, led by an accountant and birdwatcher named Allston Jenkins. They worked together to preserve land up and down the east coast, and, in 1959, they created their first nature preserve. In 1961, they became Natural Lands Trust, Inc., eventually shortening the name to Natural Lands.

For people who want to learn new skills, enjoy fresh air and meet others who share a love of nature, Natural Lands (www.

NatLands.org) offers many opportunities to volunteer. There are many service projects to choose from as well as the Force of Nature® volunteer program, which teaches land stewardship techniques. “These volunteer opportunities help people connect to the natural world, and to each other,” said Kirsten. “Preserves like Hildacy have one person to manage all those acres, so volunteers are essential to our land stewardship work.”

Since March 2020, Hildacy Preserve as well as the other Natural Lands properties have seen a threefold increase in visitors. “The outdoors have been a huge source of comfort since the pandemic hit,” said Kirsten. “Hildacy and our other properties have provided enjoyment for people who want to escape the negative news of the day.”

Marple Newtown High School Teacher Robert Speca: Inspiring a New Generation of Domino Topplers Written by Holly Stupak Robert Speca on the set of The Late Show with David Letterman

M

arple Newtown High School teacher Robert Speca is not your typical science teacher. He also happens to be a professional domino toppler, known as the “Domino Wizard,” the “Domino King,” and the “Father of Domino Toppling.” For the past 40+ years, he has been toppling all over the world, and appearing on such shows as The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and The Late Show with David Letterman. He is listed in The Guinness Book of World Records as holding the record five times.

Toppling is the art of standing up dominoes in sequence, to create a chain reaction also known as “the domino effect.”

Only the first domino should be toppled by hand. Robert started domino toppling back when he himself was a student at MNHS in the 1970s. He became inspired when his 10th-grade math teacher, Mr. Dobransky, lectured his class on math induction theory and compared the theory to a row of falling

dominoes. After the lecture, Robert bought himself four boxes of dominoes, set them up on his dining room table and pushed the first one over. Since then, he has been hooked.

Robert said watching the dominoes fall one by one was hypnotic and his fascination is something he can’t explain. “I started buying more boxes of dominoes and setting up shows in my basement,” he said. “I got carried away!”

His domino displays for neighbors and friends caught the attention of a family friend who featured him in the local paper, The County Leader. Shortly after that, he got the opportunity to be on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, where

Johnny referred to his domino toppling as a form of “art in motion.” By age 18, he had set the first official world record for the highest number of dominoes toppled in a chain reaction: 11,111 pieces.

After graduating from MNHS in 1975, he went on to pursue a degree in Astronomy from the University of Pennsylvania, but his teaching career didn’t start until many years later in what Robert calls his “second act.” He graduated from Penn in 1979 and traveled around the world, creating domino displays for charities, publicity events, corporate meetings, colleges and high schools. His displays are elaborate creations that are painstakingly assembled, with names like “The Tarzan Swing” and “Six Days ‘til Sunday.” Set-up for those displays can take a week or more.

Over the years, Robert Speca appeared on other shows such as Ellen Degeneres and Mister Rogers, and Robert’s displays have been featured in TV ads, The Puppy Bowl, and most recently on the Netflix show Master of None. Robert also wrote two books: Championship Domino Toppling and The Great Falling Domino Book, both of which teach readers how to set up their own domino creations “Rube Goldberg style.” Information about Robert’s books as well as videos and fun facts can be found on his website: www.DominoShow.com.

Goldberg Society, a club at MNHS, inspiring a whole new generation of domino topplers. “Toppling builds patience and stimulates the imagination,” explained Robert.

In 2013, Robert and his students helped celebrate the success of MNHS’s book drive for Read Across America (March 2 this year), by creating and toppling dominoes and books that spelled out the message “MN Reads.” The display, which included 1400 multi-colored rectangles outlined by 200 large and small hardcover books, traveled up ladders, walked the plank, dove into glasses of water and flipped from mouse traps.

As a teacher, Robert said he’s glad he can use his own experience to inspire the students. “It’s really enjoyable to see the ideas the students come up with,” said Robert. “I show them the basics and they really take off with it. Not only is it great for teaching about matter, energy and engineering skills, it’s a great way to express yourself!” M

How to Solve This Problem Permanently

M

any people aren’t aware of the underlying problems that can and often do exist on plaster walls. Homeowners who see peeling paint often think that the fix is simply to repaint those areas. But almost without fail, the peeling paint returns.

In most cases, the plaster itself is beautifully finished underneath the paint, so that isn’t causing the paint-peeling problem. The culprit is most likely calcimine, which is predominantly chalk.

A strong indicator of calcimine’s presence is when you see the paint peeling in sheets, down to bare plaster.

The unfortunate part of this is that to fix this problem permanently, the entire coating needs to be removed down to the plaster. Simply scraping off the peeled paint, spackling and repainting will NOT make this problem go away!!

New paint will peel right off again.

Some painting contractors are not aware of what causes paint to peel on plaster walls, so when they do a repaint job, peeling often starts again not long after the job is done.

Another thing that can cause paint to peel on plaster walls is moisture in the walls. A simple moisture test can indicate if there is moisture present.

Identify the Cause of the Peeling Paint The first step is to identify if you are definitely dealing with a calcimine problem. You can easily detect calcimine by rubbing a damp finger on the surface, to check for a chalky residue.

If your plaster walls do have calcimine, it will feel like you wet your finger and rubbed it on a dirty chalkboard.

If the damp finger test proves calcimine IS present, the next step is to scrape off as much paint as you can. Then, scrub and wash the wall surfaces with a detergent or hard surface cleaner such as Spic ‘n Span, dishwashing liquid or TSP — something that will create a lot of suds as you use it with a scrubbing pad and you scrub hard on the walls. Your goal is to create a frothy foam that suspends the water and keeps the surface wet longer, to help the calcimine loosen its hold on the plaster walls.

After you’ve scraped off all the loose paint and thoroughly scrubbed and washed the plaster walls, you’re ready to prime and add the finish coats to the walls. A shellac-based primer is highly recommended, after which any latex paint coating will adhere well.

Yes, identifying and permanently solving this plaster walls problem is a labor-intensive process. But if done correctly, you will not have any more peeling or popping paint! M

oday, we have dozens of companies offering everything from door bell systems that record visitors to those that chase away visitors by sounding an audible alarm. And the choices for such systems are only increasing.

How are we to choose from among so many options? What is your level of curiosity? What will help you feel safe and secure in your home? Do you live on a very busy street with constant traffic? Do you live on a quiet street with occasional vehicles?

After law enforcement officials obtain those videos, the perpetrators are often apprehended rather quickly.

Honoring

T

here was a Disturbance in the Force on December 29, 2020. Millions of voices of local history, past and present, were suddenly silenced. Something terrible happened: Our neighbor, Rich Paul, passed away.

If you had been to a history event in Delaware County in the last 50 years, then you likely crossed paths with Rich. He was everywhere in the Delaware County history community.

Though his home base was his beloved hometown of Marple, his interest, energy and life reached into every corner of the county, and back into every moment of its history.

He held offices with the Marple Historical Society, as Chairman of the Marple Historical Commission, Chairman of the Delaware County Heritage Commission, President and then Treasurer of the Delaware County Historical Society as well as the Property Director and Vice President of the 1696 Thomas Massey House. He was a costumed waiter at the wonderful period dinners held at the Massey House. He ran a mailing list that helped all history organizations in the County promote their programs and events, and he was a presence at most of those events. He gave slideshows on local history to community groups throughout the county. In fact, he had just completed a new program that focused on the role of Delaware County in the development of America that he was to give in December, until it got canceled by the shutdown.

Rich had a long list of projects still to be done, including the work of preserving the Hayti Cemetery, long neglected until he began working to have people of good faith begin the process of honoring those forgotten dead by taking responsibility for that abandoned Marple cemetery.

I first met Rich when I moved into an historic home in Marple.

He showed up at my door, introduced himself and his interest in history, and asked if I would show him around. I hesitantly agreed, but an hour later, we were fast friends. He pointed out unique items: handmade hooks in the basement where the old farmers would have hung meat, and a homemade “smokehouse” in a 3rd-floor closet where the farmer had simply cut a hole in the chimney to let smoke fill the closet. He knew his history, and his enthusiasm was infectious.

We talked like we had known each other for years. And we stayed in touch. Rich brought me onto several of his boards.

The greatest legacy to Rich Paul would be to have hundreds of others, inspired by his life, stand up and step forward and volunteer to fill the vacuum in the community left by his loss, called to action by virtue of his example. The last time I saw him, in early December, we sat at the Massey House with a long-time Marple resident and did oral history, looking at a stack of recently donated old photos and trying to identify the people and places and events they showed. Rich’s memory and recall were vast. He stood on the shoulders of those who had come before him, such as Hilda Lucas, and so if an event had ever happened in Marple, he knew something about it, and/or where to find it. We had big plans for 2021, to do these sessions on a regular basis and work on the entire photo archives.

The loss of Rich Paul to the larger community is huge. His knowledge, energy, time and leadership, all delivered with humor and warmth and kindness, made his community a far better place by virtue of his living in it. That is, of course, a great legacy in itself. For his friends in history, those of us who share his passion, hopefully we will pick up those unfinished projects, move them forward, and honor Rich’s memory by working to complete the work he had started.

And for the thousands of Delaware County residents who have visited the Massey House, all of the school children who have toured there with Rich, all of the people who appreciate the local history that Rich worked to preserve, you can honor his legacy as well. There are so many ways to give back to a community, and so while you may not have the same passion for history, you can volunteer, in children’s sports, at the library, at the firehouse, in the annual Darby Creek cleanout, in serving on a township committee, or in dozens of other ways that contribute to the good of the community where you live. Rather than cursing the darkness over his loss, you can light a candle to his memory, by bringing your light to your community.
