Wow! How hot was October! And don’t mean in degree days. It was our hottest month yet for excitement about Marple’s new social-media-in-print magazine: Marple Friends & Neighbors. Maybe our monthly magazine caught on like wildfire last month because of our feature story about our back cover sponsor, Freddy’s Steakburgers. Or perhaps it was my invitation for magazine readers to become a “Reader Leader” which started a fire under readers to really spread the word about their new magazine.

Expert Contributor Written by Tom Rafferty Rafferty Painting & General Contracting

Plaster Walls, Peeling Problems, and Solutions to Properly Prevent Re-Occurrence

M

any people aren’t aware of the underlying problems that exist on plaster walls. In many cases, homeowners repaint these areas only to see them peel time and time again. There isn’t a problem with the plaster and in most cases, the plaster is beautifully finished underneath. The culprit is most likely calcimine. A very good indicator of its presence is when you see the paint peeling in sheets down to bare plaster.

The unfortunate part of this is the entire coating needs to be removed down to the plaster. Simply scraping and spackling and repainting will not cure this problem. The paint will actually peel right off again. We see this in many repaints and frankly, some painting contractors aren’t aware of what causes this. There could also be moisture in the walls that could cause this as well. A simple moisture test can indicate if there is moisture present.

Identify What You’ve Got The first process is to identify for sure that you are dealing with a calcimine problem. Because it is predominantly chalk, you can easily detect calcimine by rubbing a damp finger (sure, spit works!) or a sponge on the surface to check for a chalky residue. If you have calcimine, it will feel like you wet your finger and rubbed a dirty chalkboard.

Once you feel you have scraped off as much paint as you can, begin scrubbing and washing. Wash all surfaces with a detergent or hard surface cleaner (Spic ‘n’ Span, dishwashing liquid, TSP) using a scrubbing pad. Really scrub at the surfaces and use a cleaner that will generate as many suds as possible. You want to generate a foamy-froth that suspends the water. It keeps the surface wet longer and helps the calcimine to let go.

After you peel all the loose paint, clean the walls you’re ready to prime and add the finish coats to your plaster walls. I recommend a shellac-based primer for your primer then any latex coating will adhere after that. It’s a labor-intensive process, but if done correctly you will not have any peeling or popping paint! What’s the Oldest House in Marple?

W

hat is the oldest surviving home in Marple Township? Probably the Stanfield/Rhoades house on Crum Creek Road. Francis Stanfield purchased 600 acres from William Penn, sight unseen. He, wife Grace and their family, were some of the first Marple settlers off the boat, arriving from England in September of 1683. Upon landing, they gathered the tools and goods they had packed and somehow made their way the 8 miles from Chester to their new “home”– a patch of woods in frontier Pennsylvania.

The first thing they did was build a log shelter. Over the next several years that shelter turned into a log home. In later years the log home was enclosed with plaster on the outside, and eventually plaster on the inside. The log home “disappeared” into the home that survives to this day. A small panel in the window frame gives a peak at the wood frame original house hidden inside. The large walk-in fireplace that heated the family on the first floor is still in place, today providing charm rather than heat. The second floor that once housed the family sleeping area still has its original fireplace, though now it graces a bathroom!

Grace and Francis were some of the first new settlers to die in Marple as well, in 1691 and 1692. The home was sold to the Rhoads family, who ran a tannery across the street and built a 2-story stone structure just west of the house to do their tanning. The Rhoads family occupied the house until late in the 1800’s, almost 200 years. The home has been added to and enlarged in several directions, but the stone tannery and original log home, age 335, are still standing.

Resident Feature Along with Santhosh and his family, Tina’s grandparents also lived in Kerala. Tina was on an extended trip visiting her grandparents when she was introduced to Santhosh.

“We spent a lot of time together in Kerala, got to know each other, and our families basically told us ‘yeah, this is good.’”

The relationship was nurtured and encouraged by the entire family from the beginning, which made everything easier. By the end of the trip, the two were engaged to be married with their whole family around them to celebrate. Tina would return home for the rest of the engagement, which was difficult for her, but luckily the engagement only lasted three months.

“When you look at how things happen here, [the engagement] was really fast. But in India, that’s pretty normal,” Tina explained.

Tina would return to Kerala with her extended family three months later. The wedding held a special significance for the family, not only as a celebration of Tina and Santhosh starting their lives together, but also as a celebration of Kerala and their heritage there. Tina wore a Sari to honor their Indian heritage, but wore white and held a Catholic mass to honor their Catholic faith.

ina and Santhosh Mathew first met in India while Tina was visiting with her family. Her parents knew of Santhosh and his family, and over the course of her trip, the two had bonded and connected over their shared heritage but refreshingly different perspectives of the world.

Tina has been local to Marple her whole life, especially in comparison to her husband who crossed oceans to be here.

She graduated from University of the Sciences with a pharmacy degree and soon became a pharmacist at Bryn Mawr Hospital, working there for the past 18 years. Consistency and locality have been a large part of Tina’s life.

Santhosh, however, grew up on the other side of the world in a town called Kerala in southern India. With a mountain range and the tropical coast, Kerala is a beautiful and energetic town.

Tina and Santhosh originally started their life together closer to Philadelphia but decided to move to Marple seven years ago for the great school system and Catholic parish. They have been active members of St. Annie’s, making friends with other families while Noah was still going to grade school there. The friends they have made have persisted even after Noah has graduated and moved on to high school.

Noah is currently a freshman at Devon Prep. It can be difficult to start in a new school, but Noah was happy to take the risk and put himself out there. In his free time, Noah likes martial arts and music, working hard to improve and learn in all of his hobbies and interests.

“I’ve watched Bruce Lee and the Karate Kid and always thought it was cool,” Noah said. “Once I got a chance, I wanted to learn it myself.”

Noah has also played piano for six years, guitar for two years, and loves to spend his free time making music and playing jazz and classic rock.

Tina is a pharmacist and Santhosh is a pharmacy technician, and sometimes they have to work with difficult schedules.

Similar to the challenging time-difference while Santhosh still

lived in India, the working hours are often opposite times of day. Santhosh is currently working night shifts and sleeping during the day, where as Tina works the day shift.

Having difficult work hours during the week makes the weekend that much more special. Nearly every weekend in the summer, the Mathew family has their cousins, aunts and uncles over their house to grill. Cooking, enjoying the sunshine, and sharing quality time together are very important to Tina and Santhosh, especially since it can sometimes be hard to find the time.

“During the summer, we try to get the family together about twice a month,” Tina said. “Everybody cooks and hangs out outside, it’s a great chance to just enjoy each other’s company.”

In addition, the Mathew family also considers their vacation time precious. They try to travel abroad as much as possible, visiting places like Australia, Singapore, Dubai, Fiji, and of course they return to India every several years to visit their family.

Through the challenges and the excitement of building a family in a new town, Tina and Santhosh consider themselves very lucky to have the supportive community around them. Years ago, Tina and Noah were driving around Marple when they noticed their car was having trouble. They took their car to Fritsch’s Auto Service Center, where Bill Fritsch was busy helping a line of customers as quickly as he could.

Tina and Noah expected hours of waiting before they even spoke to anyone, but Bill Fritsch came out to say hello in a matter of minutes. After learning that they were new to the community and that Noah, a young boy at the time, was driving with her, Bill made sure to have someone tend to their car quickly and get them back on the road. The thoughtful gesture was a very kind welcome from the community to the Mathew family.

My parents taking the risk and moving here has given me and my brother the opportunity to have this life,” Tina said.

“The people in Marple have always been very helpful, I realized early on that we look out for each other here,” Santhosh said.

The past seven years in Marple have been full of love, family and excitement, traveling the world and raising a child in the Marple community. The entire Mathew family is excited to see what new memories and new places wait for them in the years ahead.

I

love Marple township because it’s a family-oriented community with great schools and great sports organizations that my five children were able to take advantage of, and still do. My wife and I started looking for a house 25 years ago when she was pregnant with our first of five children. What attracted us to the Broomall area initially was the low taxes as compared to some of the surrounding towns. After spending so many years here, I realized that we have made the right choice for our family. We have met so many great people through our great Marple Newtown schools and sports programs that have become lifelong friends. I’ve seen this community rally in support of kids that get sick, or families that are in need.

Marple has so much to offer young families today through many great organizations such as the two little leagues, South Marple and Marple Township. We have a youth football and cheerleading program that attracts over 500 kids. Also, Marple Newtown Soccer and Marple Newtown Lacrosse programs are wildly successful. Marple Township provides recreation services through Marple Newtown Leisure Services, this organization provides many great things other than sports, including

educational and cultural activities, trips, and community happenings.

Although I was attracted here initially because of the low taxes, it became evident that this community has incredible services for families in spite of that. I had the opportunity to coach little league baseball, football, and basketball for all five of my kids. Being a part of a family in Marple Township and watching your kids go from children to adults has been very rewarding.

Joe Rufo has lived in Marple Township since 1994 and has served Marple residents of the First Ward as Commissioner since 2012, and Chairman of The Marple Township Board of Commissioners since 2015. Joes’ past service to his community also includes having served on the Marple Newtown School Board and as a Marple Junior Tigers Football Coach since 2000. Joe and his wife Julie are the proud parents of five children attending Marple Newtown High School, Cabrini College, Temple University, and West Chester University. M

hile I can’t reveal her full name (yet), “Emily.” of Marple Township, has become our first Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine “Reader Leader” who has successfully helped us to grow our magazine for the benefit of all readers. Through Emily’s effort last month, I was introduced to Tom Rafferty, a Broomall resident and local business owner who, for more than 20 years, has led Rafferty Painting & General Contracting to become one of Pennsylvania’s most trusted and successful contractors. Emily really came through with that introduction, and we’re all better for it!

T

he Porch at the Lamb Tavern has been a staple of our community for nearly 300 years and continues to adapt and improve with people around it. The current partners of The Porch have made modern renovations in style and service to this historic restaurant. It is clear from the moment someone walks in that each person working at The Porch, from the server to the head chef to the owners, have a passion for service.

The current ownership began in 1999, when Steve Graham purchased the location with a vision to the future. John Whalin has been a partner for over 30 years and continued with Steve.

After their third partner, unfortunately, passed away two years later, Pete Crisanti joined as the third partner in 2001.

With Steve’s dynamic vision for the future of the restaurant and John’s decades of experience with the history of the restaurant, The Lamb Tavern was set for an aggressive, but appropriate, step into the modern age of the service industry. Pete brought the important element of control and administration to the project as major renovations began.

The three partners have a rich combined history in Marple. In addition to John Whalin’s experience working at The Lamb Tavern for so many years, Pete Crisanti has run businesses in Marple for just as long. Pete’s father owned a meat market in Marple for years, and after working for his father for years, Pete opened a beer distributor in Marple and operated

that business for 20 years.

By the time Pete was approached by Steve in 2001, Pete had a very proud working history with his community.

“I have never left this town in my three careers,” Pete said with pride.

Pete was friends with Steve Graham long before 2001, and when he was approached about the idea of partner-ownership of The Lamb Tavern, Pete was eager to try something new that was still in his hometown.

Steve had a vision for The Lamb Tavern and was very excited to make it a reality. With Pete’s help and John’s experience, The Lamb Tavern would soon become The Porch at the Lamb Tavern.

The Lamb Tavern was an exclusive fine dining establishment before renovations. The waiters wore tuxedoes, the menu consisted of items like prime rib and lobster and only an exclusive number of people could afford to eat there. Steve wanted to get away from this mindset and create a more inclusive environment that the entire community could be a part of.

The Lamb Tavern became The Porch at the Lamb Tavern, an inclusive and inviting atmosphere while still retaining a sense of sophistication a cut above casual dining.

“With some time and vision, we made a 300-year old building more contemporary, more of a country club atmosphere,” Pete explained.

Steve has always loved to renovate and improve, which has coincided nicely with the natural changes to the community around them. The historic restaurant set in its own history was rapidly becoming a sleek and modern alternative for everyday residents of Marple. For Peter, John, and Steve, The Porch was becoming more and more of a joy to work in.

“We are all alike, we have no hobbies except for our passion for our work,” Pete said of his partners and himself. “It makes

it fun going to work every day knowing we have a positive environment to work in.”

Family is an important part of the workplace environment of The Porch. Not only have the children of the partners worked with the company at some point, but some of the employees of The Porch have worked for decades.

“We try to treat everyone like family,” Pete said. “We are a part of their lives and we want to make sure they are prospering when we prosper.”

Why Proper Attic Ventilation is so Important, and a History as to why Yours Could be Faulty

W

hen performing the initial inspection at a residential building, a professional roofing contractor will almost immediately begin analyzing the existing roof ventilation design. There are often tell-tale signs of poor attic ventilation found during the initial site visit, mainly soft or delaminating plywood, mold, musty odor, and rust on the nails seen on the underside of the deck. When one, or all, of these conditions are present, it is time to improve. Let’s start at the beginning.

Throughout the evolution of the construction industry, there have been some missteps, specifically in regards to the interaction between roofing and attic ventilation. Up until the 1950’s, when self- sealing asphalt shingles and plywood became the norm for most residential roofs, the typical materials were slate, tile, and cedar shake… all of which were typically installed on actual wood boards, and all of which “selfventilated” or were more “breathable”. The attic conditions under these roofs would perform, even with just a couple gable vents or windows on the exterior walls. There was never a real concern for condensation or mold. During the construction

boom of the 50’s, asphalt shingles and plywood were installed regularly, with minimal attic ventilation. Homes were still being built without overhangs (soffits). It took almost thirty years for the current ventilation model to be implemented regularly, which primarily includes soffit vents (intake air), and ridge vents (exhaust vents).

The basic idea with attic ventilation is to have the same amount of “intake” air from the outside, as the amount of “exhaust” air. In modern construction, the intake air comes typically from a continuous slot or perforated soffits… essentially holes to allow air into the attic space from under the overhangs. The exhaust is typically achieved by adding a “ridge vent” — another continuous slot at the peak of your roof where the air leaves the attic space. Though attic ventilation is important in the summer, it is crucially important in the winter months when the heat is on. Heat will rise through the walls and ceiling, and make its way into the attic space.

With that heat loss is also vapor loss. When these warm vapors hit the cold underside of the plywood (snow on the roof), the effect of condensation will occur and can cause catastrophic water damage and mold. I always compare it to a cold glass of iced tea in the summer… the condensation will form on the outside (warm side) of the glass. The only way to stop these vapors from condensing into a liquid, is to combat them with cool fresh air from the outside.

With this information on proper attic ventilation, you can monitor your own and see if yours needs an upgrade. M

Thanksgiving:

A Tradition of Hope and Gratitude

Leaves are changing color, falling and collecting in scattered heaps in our lawns; the wind is gradually becoming brisker, the skies greyer.

Though these changes signify the close of summer and the soonto-be end of fall, the holiday season is fast approaching, its promised cheer in tow. The first round of hosting, recipe sharing and gathering of family and friends occurs in honor of Thanksgiving.

Between hours of cooking, mingling and decorating, it becomes easier and easier to forget (or to simply never fully learn) the history of Thanksgiving. Surely you recall the famous voyage of the Mayflower and can perhaps recount vague details about the first feast near Plymouth Rock, but by returning to our country’s rich holiday history, you can gain new insight on our old traditions. By learning more about the reasons behind Thanksgiving, families can furnish deeper relationships and foster more meaningful conversations in these times of shared gratitude. In the very least, you’ll have a few fun tidbits to share at the dinner table.

A ship titled The Mayflower left England in search for the New World in September 1620. 102 passengers aboard the small vessel brimmed with hope at the thought of prosperity, free religious practices and land ownership. The voyage to the New World lasted a grueling 66 days and the crew, exhausted, decided to anchor at Cape Cod, Massachusetts instead of their intended (but much further off) destination at the mouth of the Hudson River.

The Pilgrims (as the passengers are now known) navigated to Plymouth where they settled in for the long, harsh New England winter. Half of the 102 Pilgrims survived the bitter cold and witnessed the gentle arrival of spring. To learn the way of their new land, the Pilgrims solicited the help of the Wampanoag tribe, an alliance that, unfortunately, remains one of the only known unions between the Pilgrims and the Native Americans. The Wampanoag tribe taught the pilgrims how to harvest corn, tap maple trees for sap and cook with local spices and herbs. According to Indian Country Today, a treaty was signed by the first Pilgrim governor John Carver and Wampanoag chief Massasoit agreeing that the tribe would protect the Pilgrims in their vulnerable state of existence in the New World.

When the winter finally passed and the first round of corn was ready for harvest, the Pilgrims organized a large feast in celebration of their collective endurance. Because of the Pilgrims’ rambunctious (and noisy) celebrations, the neighboring Wampanoag tribe’s attention was piqued. Fearing attack, roughly 90 Native Americans surrounded Plymouth. Upon arrival, the Native Americans realized that the Pilgrims were celebrating, not being attacked, and camped nearby for the three consecutive days of feasting.

The Native Americans and the Pilgrims did in fact enjoy meals together, but it was out of protection and adherence to the original agreement that the two groups would cohabit the land.

This celebratory feast of their first successful harvest is now known as Thanksgiving. Men went hunting and produced various fowl and several deer for the meal. The bounty was seasoned with traditional Native American spices and flavors, but was still a far cry from what we consume nowadays. For instance, there weren’t any potatoes at the original feast; these did not make it to the United States until quite a bit later when they gained worldwide popularity. Also, sadly, without having invented the oven yet and having limited sugar supplies, there weren’t any decadent pies present at the first Thanksgiving.

The nation as a whole was slow on the uptake of Thanksgiving as a holiday. In 1789, George Washington issued a proclamation encouraging citizens to use this time to show gratitude for our newly gained independence. The notion of this holiday was still understandably vague, however, and it was not adopted as an annual celebration until 1817 when New York became the first state to observe Thanksgiving. Several other states followed suit, but each celebrated the holiday on a different day.

Finally, on September 28, 1863, a magazine editor by the name of Sarah Josepha Hale wrote a letter to Abraham Lincoln, insisting that he set an official day each year for the celebration of Thanksgiving. Sarah had been urging Lincoln’s predecessors to complete this same request for 15 years. Surprisingly, Lincoln obliged and issued a proclamation on October 3, 1863 that solidified the tradition of Thanksgiving.

Lincoln’s proclamation of Thanksgiving as a national holiday came at the height of the Civil War. He asked all war-wearied Americans to help one another heal through the expression of gratitude. Lincoln marked the last Thursday of November as the day of Thanksgiving.

From the very first celebration in 1621 to the proclamation made

by Lincoln in 1863, the recognition of strife and the spoken gratitude for our closest companions have persisted as the essential themes of Thanksgiving. Use the approaching holiday as a time to reflect on achievements, lessons and moments for improvement over the past year. Gather closely with your beloved family and friends to express gratitude for one another’s support. For starters, we can all be thankful that we (unlike the Pilgrims) have plenty of sugar and a working oven to bake delicious pies in.

After all, this is our chance to enjoy fall’s delicious bounty before the long winter — until Christmas, that is! M
