Q

I am in pretty good shape and work out, but I can’t get rid of my hips, otherwise known as saddlebags. What are my options other than surgery or liposuction?

This is a great time to ask that question, as CoolSmooth, a new applicator created by CoolSculpting, can reduce fat in the outer thighs, hips and upper abdomen with no needles, surgery or downtime. During a one- to two-hour treatment, CoolSmooth delivers precisely controlled cooling to unwanted fat cells. Several weeks after the procedure, cooled fat cells begin a process called “apoptosis” and begin to shrink and disappear. The body will gradually eliminate the cooled fat cells, reducing the thickness of the fat layer.

Is the hCG diet safe for weight loss, and does it really work? Doing this type of program on your own can prove harmful, but under doctor supervision, the hCG weight loss program can be safe and effective for weight loss. HCG increases leptin, a hormone which can decrease fat storage. The 500 to 800 calorie diet puts the body in a fat-burning state and is safe provided that it is not sustained for longer than 30 days, proper hydration and supplements are included, and a long-term nutrition plan follows.

What is the benefit of dental implants over a bridge or dentures? Loss of a tooth (or teeth) can happen to anyone. Bridges and dentures can result in bone loss over time, which can alter the structure of your face and adversely affect your appearance. When your jawbone deteriorates, the aging effect is accelerated. Dental implants, however, offer a more permanent solution that preserves the structure of your bone. The sooner you replace a tooth with an implant, the more you can prevent bone loss.

Am I too young for hair transplant surgery? I am cautious about performing hair transplant procedures on young, rapidly balding patients with a strong family history. Early and aggressive hair transplant may produce an unnatural look years later. Hair transplant should wait until after the balding process stabilizes, usually after age 30. Nonsurgical options including laser light therapies, platelet rich plasma injections and medications should be considered first.

What is a Pap smear, and how often do women need them? A Pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer and pre-cancer, most often caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). We recommend the test every two to three years for women in their 20s beginning at age 21, and every three to five years, along with HPV co-testing, for age 30 to 65. Women over 65, or who have had a hysterectomy, usually no longer need to have the test, although they Carrie Lawson, MD, FACOG should continue to schedule an annual gynecological exam.
