The Age of Reinvention Sometimes we consciously make a decision to change, but oftentimes, reinvention is just a necessary part of growth. I found this to be true when I started Best Self Atlanta in 2009, when the economy was in tatters and print was officially “dead.” To be successful, we quickly learned to adapt to our changing world. These past six years have truly been an age of reinvention for us as we expanded into new avenues to connect with our readers. Today, Atlanta Best Media, the parent company of Atlanta Home Improvement Magazine and Best Self Atlanta, has active digital platforms that engage with thousands of Atlantans in many ways, even before they’ve picked up our magazines. Exploring those new avenues has led to many positive learning experiences and has opened lots of new doors for us at Best Self. In truth, if you own a business in any industry, you’ve been reinventing too. You’ve been quick to react, change, listen and create positive opportunities out of a lackluster economy and technology revolution that changed the lives of almost everyone. That ability to reinvent, survive and thrive has kept us all here to stay, and it’s why we can happily celebrate our sixth anniversary here at Best Self Atlanta.

Selecting the right cosmetic dentist can be a difficult and confusing process,

but choosing the right one is a crucial decision with ramifications on your looks and self-confidence that could last a lifetime.

In this eBook you will find key topics covered such as: Ju-Tox Juice Bar & Wellness Center – This is one of the only juice bars I have found that makes the juice from scratch while you wait. I haven’t found anything in years that makes me feel this good! My favorite mix is Ju-Shine.

Luminara Real Flame-Effect Candles – My son got me one of these for Christmas, and I liked it so much I went out and bought more. I can enjoy the ambiance of candles without dealing with dripping wax or an open flame. Plus, these are scented just like a regular candle and are even remote controlled. Details: Find your nearest retailer at Stephanie Johnson Miami Orange Cosmetic Bag – I love the color, and I especially love the shape of this bag. It’s perfect for a workout bag or suitcase. What are the most common fitnessrelated stressors people experience?

What is the most common work-related stressor people experience?

What is the most common fashionrelated stressor people experience?

What are the most common social stressors people experience?

What is the most common food-related stressor people experience?

Lack of time, cost, fear of failure and fear of getting hurt.

The number one issue I hear from my clients is,“I just don’t have enough hours in the day to get everything done at work.”

The feeling of having a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear.

Why are so many people stressed by their workload?

Know your body, accept it and embrace it. Be realistic when shopping, and create a wardrobe that works for the body and lifestyle you have today.

Moving to a new city and not knowing anyone. Another stressor is when people’s lives take divergent paths. As some old friends have kids or move away, there is stress around how to manage those relationships and/or make new ones.

Most of my clients struggle with trying to properly plan out their weekly meals. If we do not plan ahead of time, we end up stressed out, in a fast food drivethrough and overeating foods that are harmful to us.

How can people reduce social stress?

Preparation is key to preventing stressful meal times – never wait until 6 p.m. to determine what you will have for dinner. Instead, every Saturday or Sunday, dedicate time to plan and shop for your meals.

How can people reduce fitness stress?

Photos (left to right) courtesy of Sara Hanna Photography, ExecuCare, Haute Couture Media, Darrah Brustein, Richie Arpino

First, identify your stressor. Once you identify it, you can create a workable solution. If it’s a lack of time, work out whenever you can fit it in. Don’t fret about how long – just make sure you do something. If it’s cost, find an online workout you enjoy. If it’s fear of failure, be sure you ease into an exercise routine. If it’s the fear of getting hurt that stresses you, hire a qualified personal trainer who understands your fitness goals. What phrase or quote can help people put their fitness routine into perspective? Make this your mantra: “Never miss more than twice.” We all have days when life gets in the way, but skipping two days is the limit. Successful people are good at getting back on track quickly.

0415_016-017_ADVICE.indd 17

Most people have never learned how to organize their time and fulfill their most important goals. Instead, they get caught up in a lot of activities that seem urgent and important at the time, but actually should be delegated to someone else or eliminated. How can people reduce work stress? When feeling overwhelmed, many people think,“If I just work harder and put in more hours right now, then it will all get better soon.” This is usually not true. A much better option is to immediately learn some new habits around how you choose to direct activities during the day. What phrase or quote can help people put their work into perspective? The classic,“Work smarter, not harder.”

How can people reduce fashion stress?

What should people avoid doing? Don’t overthink it! If something makes you happy and confident, wear it. It’s an outfit, not a tattoo. What is your personal fashion-related stressor? Standing 6’1” and a size 16, it’s hard to find clothes I love that fit. It is frustrating that, as a stylist, I can always find amazing pieces for my clients but not always for myself. How do you deal with it? I have learned to embrace my body and more importantly, my shape. Dressing well is all about balancing your silhouette. I only buy clothes that work for me. Also, a good tailor makes a huge difference!

While it may sound oversimplified, the first thing you need to do to reduce social stress is to accept yourself. Be happy with who you are, and be happy alone. Once you can do that, you don’t feel nervous to be yourself. How can people put their social stress into perspective? Remind yourself that other people want to make new friends too. And if you don’t click with someone, that’s OK. How do you deal with social stress? I love to meet new people and learn their stories, so I look at interactions as an opportunity to do that.

How can people reduce food stress?

bestbulletin Run For Your Life April is National Donate Life Month, bringing awareness to organ donation and transplantation. To show your support, participate in the Run 4 Your Life 5K event at the Silver Comet Trail. On April 18 at 9 a.m., runners from across Atlanta will don blue and green – the colors of the Donate Life organization – and raise awareness for the cause. Registration starts at $25, and if you aren’t a runner but still want to join in the fun, sign up to volunteer.

Race for the Cure Breast cancer awareness steals the show in October, but another key fundraising event happens next month: Susan G. Komen’s annual Race for the Cure. On the morning of May 9, come ready to run, walk or simply be inspired by the post-race festivities and survivor ceremony. This is Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta’s 25th annual run, and 75 percent of proceeds raised will stay in Atlanta to educate and screen local women. Details: Lenox Square Mall, 3393 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, GA,

A Healthy Change Is your neighborhood making you fat? Well, it’s not as simple as that, but it could be a factor. At the Museum of Design Atlanta, the new “Designing Healthy Communities” exhibit explores how our physical environments impact our health and well-being. For example, many areas of town are laid out in ways that encourage residents to drive instead of walk or stay home instead of interacting with neighbors. But it doesn’t have to be that way! This interactive exhibit, opening on April 19, shows the huge variety of design strategies that can make our communities more accessible and healthier for everyone.

Pick of the Month If your day includes a stop at the gym before or after work, you will love these super chic organizer bags from Fivesse. The bag holds all of your gym-to-work essentials and keeps them neatly organized with convenient labels, helping you sort, store and systemize your routine. There is even a secret pocket for valuables, a place for dirty clothing and a separate garment bag option to avoid wrinkling your work clothes. I recently discovered that it also works well as a travel carry-on. I can easily access my water bottle, hand cream, lip balm, mints and earphones without much digging. It’s my favorite go-to bag, and prices start at just $99. Jessica Dauler

bestself 2015 Over 40 & Fabulous! Advisory Board

This month, the Advisory Board members share their journeys and words of wisdom for a rewarding career Dr. Dina Giesler

Dr. Brian Maloney

Atlanta Smiles and Wellness – Dental Health/Cosmetic Dentistry

Maloney Center for Facial Plastic Surgery – Facial Cosmetic Surgery

Dr. Dina Giesler knew she wanted to work in dentistry from the time she was in 11th grade. “I’ll never forget it,” she says.“I was sitting with my girlfriend, and we were talking about becoming dental hygienists. So my senior year in high school, I started working for an orthodontist.” The spark was lit, so after she went to hygiene school, Dr. Giesler continued to dental school to become a cosmetic dentist. Her practice today provides everything from general care to cosmetic procedures.

Dr. Brian Maloney’s roots are in reconstructive surgery.“As I went through my residency,” he remembers,“I would rebuild faces from scratch after car accidents and gunshot wounds, taking bone from the rib and hips and skull.” These years reconstructing every part of the face gave him an intimate understanding of the nuances of facial surgery and honed his skills.

Work harder than anyone else. Stay focused on the goal, and never ever give up!

Along the way, Dr. Giesler pushed herself to learn other skills as well. She pursued her Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry, which only 1% of dentists achieve. In addition to learning everything she needed to along the way, Dr. Giesler credits her success to hiring great people. “You surround yourself with women that can multitask – good, strong women,” she says. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that she herself is one.

0415_020-023_Over40-AB.indd 21

My parents always said, ‘The sky is the limit. You can do anything you set your mind to.’ Life is short, and it is important to find your passion!

Eventually, he began to focus on cosmetic surgery. He compares the two, saying,“With reconstructive surgery, we’re taking an abnormal feature and trying to make it look normal; with cosmetic surgery, we’re taking a normal feature and trying to enhance it.” And with each kind of surgery, Dr. Maloney says, he encountered overwhelming gratitude from his patients.“It’s neat to have patients writing letters to share how the surgery changed their lives.” Dr. Maloney himself takes advantage of those life-changing effects of cosmetic surgery, actively using Botox and Juvederm to avoid that infamous “grumpy resting face” and keep a happy, lifted look to match his attitude.

Diana Hofsommer Camp Horizon – Volunteerism When Diana Hofsommer took on her role as developmental director of Camp Horizon, she quickly realized it presents its own unique challenges compared with a traditional for-profit business. She explains,“Even though we’ve been around since 1982, the climate has really changed. It’s not as easy to secure funding from granting foundations as it used to be, and funders often don’t want to provide continuing support, so it forces us to seek out new funders constantly.” Plus, it ironically costs a lot of money to hold fundraisers.

Be open to new opportunities, even if they are different from what you initially envisioned. For me, even if my past experience seems a bit disparate at first glance, it has all come together to be exactly what I needed at the right time.

3/25/15 7:42 AM

bestself 2015 Over 40 & Fabulous! Advisory Board Despite these challenges, Hofsommer has a plan to overcome them. “My goal as a development director for Camp Horizon is to foster better and increased relationships in our community.” She is working hard to get the word out about Camp Horizon to those who will make great partners. “We’ve got a lot of really great people and a lot of really great businesses in the Metro Atlanta area, and we’re a worthy cause,” she says. Now it’s just a matter of finding each other and joining forces to help Atlanta’s kids.

Madison James B98.5 FM – Fitness/Weight Loss In today’s world of endless messages about diet and weight loss options, sometimes it can be easy to pay attention to the wrong ones – ones that get you the results you want, but in a way that isn’t the healthiest for your body. Even Madison James experienced this during her first forays into figure competitions. “I became very obsessed about the wrong things,” she remembers. “For me, it was extreme dieting. And when you do that, you are depriving your body of things that it needs. You think you look great, but it can be a very dangerous situation. My levels were thrown off – my hormones were not balanced, and my body didn’t know what was going on.” She ended up in the doctor’s office, realizing that there had to be a healthier way to look the way she wanted to.

Go after your passion. Your passion for something will be the motivation you need to keep going, especially when challenges arise.

Now, she’s found that. With regular meals of healthy, whole food and just three 30-minute workouts per week, James has her body and her life in balance. She says, “It’s very important for me to share with people that there’s a way you can be your best self and not be in the gym all day and counting calories. There’s a much easier way to do it.”

Amanda Hair Bob Steele Salon – Hair Despite her last name, Amanda Hair hasn’t always worked in the hair industry. In fact, before her current role with Bob Steele Salon, she was in retail management. “I decided that was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – I wanted time to focus on my family. It just happened that I was a client of Bob Steele Salon, and they needed someone who could manage the salon location.” She jumped at the chance, quickly rising through the ranks to become co-owner and now CEO.

Approach every situation with the end in mind. For example, every decision I make for the growth of Bob Steele Salon, I pose this question to myself: ‘Will I maintain the time needed to be a good wife, mother and leader to the team?’ If the answer is no, I usually pass until I can answer that very same question with a yes.

It wasn’t just the great opportunity that attracted her, though. “I just really loved the industry,” Hair says. “I loved the people and the core values that we represent at Bob Steele Salon. The people that I work with are truly caring people – probably the nicest people that I have ever met. I’m living my passion.”

bestself 2015 Over 40 & Fabulous! Advisory Board remembers thinking, “This can’t be it!” After meeting Cynthia Decker while working at another lingerie shop, they decided to open their own boutique to meet the style and size needs for all women.

Go for it! Don’t let others discourage you. Sometimes the impossible is possible, but you will never know until you try.

At Livi Rae Lingerie, Decker says they are constantly surprised at how many people wear the wrong size bra. That’s partially because women like Hopkins herself have few resources to find large-cup bras. Decker reveals, “We’re in the process of designing our own bra, and hopefully we’ll be able to satisfy the needs of somebody who’s 50 N besides just one style in four different colors.”

Molly Hopkins and Cynthia Decker Livi Rae Lingerie – Breast Health/Self-Esteem The inspiration to work in the lingerie industry was a logical one for Molly Hopkins, co-founder of Livi Rae Lingerie. Hopkins’ experience began in third grade, when she couldn’t find any undergarment options that weren’t black, beige or white. She

After years in this industry, Hopkins and Decker know one thing for sure: focusing on the customer herself is just as important as focusing on fit. After they’ve helped a client, Hopkins says, “They feel like we’ve really taken the time to cater to their needs. Our clients become our friends.” Hopkins adds, “I don’t know any place that I can go that I’ll get a hug from the person that helps me. We find that we hug a lot in our store – it’s very emotional, and it’s very bonding.” So whether you come in just for a bra or for some emotional support, Hopkins sums up the experience with the phrase, “Change your bra, change your life.”

Dr. Tara Frix Total HealthCare – Non-Surgical Joint and Spine Care Dr. Tara Frix had no doubts about where her career was headed. “I always wanted to be a doctor,” she says. But she always knew that a patient’s health can’t just rely on one provider. “Early on, I was drawn to the multidisciplinary approach of having sports medicine doctors, non-surgical orthopedists, chiropractors and physiotherapists that all have the same goal for the patient.”

If you work hard and work smart, it will eventually pay off. Persistence is the key to achieving anything you want. Whether it’s financial, career, personal or health goals, keep at it, keep going, keep moving forward – you will eventually look around and realize you are there! I see patients that do it all of the time. If they stick to their treatment plan and do their exercises, they eventually get back to living a painfree life because they didn’t give up.

Today, she’s living her vision at Total HealthCare, helping patients eliminate joint pain without relying on the all-too-common cortisone injections and joint replacements. “I love giving patients their lives back and getting them active again,” she says.

bestbites Spinach Salad This easy spinach salad with mushrooms, red peppers and goat cheese makes a delicious starter for any meal. This recipe also includes instructions for a homemade salad dressing so you can avoid the hidden sugars and added ingredients in a bottled dressing. For a stand-alone meal, try adding shrimp or chicken, or for a vegan version, skip the goat cheese. And if you’re just too busy to cook tonight, head to Davio’s Atlanta in Phipps Plaza and order this delicious dish off their menu. INGREDIENTS

8 ounces baby spinach

Remove the stems from the spinach and wash, drain and pat dry thoroughly. Place into a large mixing bowl and set aside.

Pinch of garlic, chopped 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 large portobello mushroom, sliced 2 ounces roasted red peppers, sliced 3 ounces goat cheese Salt and black pepper to taste

Divide the spinach mixture between four plates or bowls, and evenly divide the goat cheese and dressing over In a saucepan, over low heat, add the each. Serve immediately. olive oil, garlic and balsamic vinegar -- Courtesy of Davio’s Atlanta, until warm. Season with a small pinch each of kosher salt and black pepper.

Sushi and Sake

Nothing says “spring” quite like fresh green peas. They add texture and sweetness to almost any dish, and they are also an excellent source of many vital components of your diet, such as vitamins A, C, K, B6, folic acid, iron, fiber and more.

Luxury complex Buckhead Atlanta welcomed Doraku Sushi last month. This new restaurant offers family style sushi and a mix of other Asian-fusion dishes for lunch and dinner, including sea urchin and live scallops for the adventurous foodie. They also offer a full bar and an extensive sake menu, so your night out will be delicious from dinner to drinks.

Basic prep: Denise Romeo, president of the Atlanta Food Bloggers’ Society and blogger at “We Like To Cook!” recommends blanching peas to release their best flavor. Start by rinsing the pods, opening them up and using your finger to pop the peas out of the pod. Add the shelled peas to a saucepan with about half an inch of boiling water. For best taste, Romeo says, “Simmer the peas over low heat about two to five minutes until they are just tender and bright green. Once cooked, drain excess water and coat the peas lightly in melted butter, or pop them into a spring salad with arugula, sliced radishes and freshly snipped mint.” Step it up: Romeo says, “To really dress up your salads, try adding pea tendrils for an added element of texture and interest.” Pea tendrils are the climbing, leafy tops of the pea plant. Romeo adds, “Don’t throw away those empty pea pods. Add them to broth for an extra flavor of spring.” Find it: Spring peas are available at most local farmers markets, including the Morningside Farmers’ Market. Shop every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 1393 N. Highland Ave., Atlanta, GA.

What is glycemic index, and does it really affect my overall health? The glycemic index (GI) measures the impact of carbohydrate-containing food on blood sugar levels and has been used to pair foods together that will keep insulin stable. Insulin regularity is the key to reducing inflammation, which is in turn the root of cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes, along with many other autoimmune diseases. Lower your inflammation by eating foods that have a low glycemic index and keep your blood sugar stable!

Even though I use antiperspirant, I sweat a lot under my arms. Is there anything safe I can do to help? Yes, a non-invasive FDA-approved procedure called miraDry can use microwave technology to eliminate underarm sweating and odor. This procedure permanently destroys underarm sweat glands, and the glands do not regenerate. You will not have additional sweating in other areas, and any soreness or swelling typically clears within a week.

What should I do if I don’t understand the result of my imaging test (CT, MRI, ultrasound, etc.)? Get a copy of the report so that you can ask your doctor specific questions about the results. Another idea is to talk directly with a radiologist, a physician who specializes in interpreting imaging exams. This can be accomplished by contacting the radiologist who read your exam, or by using an online service that allows you to have a personal consultation with a radiologist who can help you understand your test results.

Why do my gums bleed? Unlike most diseases that give us early warning signs, gum disease progresses silently, often without pain. Bleeding of the gums is one of the few initial signs and is due to bacterial infection and inflammation. Progression of the disease will result in the loss of bone surrounding the teeth. However, with regular check-ups and proper home care including brushing, flossing and using a mouth rinse, you can significantly decrease your risk.

I got my annual Pap test, and all was normal. Do I still need to worry about ovarian cancer? Pap tests only screen for cervical cancer. There are currently no screening tests for ovarian cancer, and unfortunately only about 20 percent of ovarian cancers are diagnosed at an early stage. The best way to find ovarian cancer is to see your gynecologist annually for a pelvic exam and to see your provider if you experience the following symptoms for two weeks or more: abdominal swelling or bloating, pelvic pressure, abdominal pain, feeling full quickly, urinary urgency or urinary frequency.

Learning Lessons with

Every morning, Atlanta listeners – and listeners in cities across the Southeast – can hear Kristin Klingshirn on “The Bert Show,” bantering with the boys, Bert Weiss and Jeff Dauler, and recapping the latest pop culture news. Longtime listeners know that underneath this UK grad’s fun-loving exterior, she’s an insightful woman who brings a great deal of compassion and perspective to her time on the air. “Once radio gets in your blood, it’s there to stay,” she says. “I truly feel this is what I’m supposed to be doing, and I am beyond grateful that I actually get to live out this dream.” She recently sat down with Best Self Atlanta to reflect on her 12 years in radio, her favorite sweets and sweat sessions in Atlanta, and the lessons she’s learned along the way.

3/24/15 1:26 PM

You mentioned your anxiety on the air a few weeks ago. How did you recognize it, and how do you control it?

Of all things, it was a Buzzfeed list called “24 Things Only Anxious People Understand.” Some examples from the list are “Your anxiety causes actual physical discomfort and pain” and “You are never really ‘in the moment.’” I was able to check off practically everything on the list. At that moment, I was ready to finally do something about it. That’s when I went back to therapy, changed my diet and became diligent about working out on a regular basis. There’s still more I’d like to do. This is a process that takes time, and you can’t fix anxiety overnight.

What aid have you found to be the most effective?

Hands down, therapy has helped me the most. Dr. Susan Rudnicki has opened my eyes in ways I didn’t know were possible.

What advice do you have for other women dealing with anxiety?

I want to abolish the stigma of mental illness, whether it’s depression or anxiety or any other disorder. So I encourage all women to seek advice and help. It doesn’t mean you’re weak if you ask for help. If anything, it means quite the opposite since you are tackling your struggles head on.

What are your favorite workouts?

I’m in love with hot yoga. I make sure to go to Red Hot Yoga at least once a week. For 60 minutes, I’m so focused on the poses that I literally think of nothing else. It’s blissful. I also work with a personal trainer at Roc House Fitness, Takeela, and I adore her. Her upbeat, positive attitude is exactly what I need.

What are your favorite ways to indulge your sweet tooth?

Now we’re talking! I love chocolate, especially dark chocolate. Butter pecan ice cream. My mom’s Three Day Coconut Cake is to die for. I could go on for days.

What are your favorite traits of your co-hosts, Bert and Jeff?

I affectionately call them the older brothers I never wanted because I do see them as family. I appreciate Jeff’s wit and comedic timing, and Bert is one of the most loyal people you will ever meet. I value their friendship and feel truly honored that I get to work alongside them every morning as they are both so freaking talented. I hope they don’t read this because their heads will be too big to fit through the studio door.

Tell us about this year’s Bert’s Big Adventure trip.

It’s always the highlight of my year! Bert’s Big Adventure takes chronic and terminally ill kids to Disney World, and the entire family gets to come. You pick up a different vibe from each trip, and this year it was independence and determination from the kids and their families. I remember Lali in her wheelchair cruising through the Magic Kingdom, determined to ride Peter Pan. She refused to sit in her dad’s lap – she was going to experience the ride like every other kid at Disney. I always say “The Bert Show” pays the bills, but Bert’s Big Adventure pays the soul.

What lessons have you learned from “The Bert Show” over the years?

The most important lesson I’ve learned is not to be so quick to judge. You will never fully understand what a person is going through or what they’ve experienced in life that makes them say or do a certain thing. We can be so quick to judge one another, so try to show compassion and kindness even when most don’t think it’s warranted.

What have you learned about yourself over the course of your career? I’m a much stronger woman than I ever gave myself credit for.

Early Prevention for Best Bone Health Osteoporosis is a prime example of an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure. Good bone health begins with a balanced diet and sufficient calcium intake in childhood and the teen years. Weight-bearing exercise from the teen years onward also helps build and maintain bone density.

D intake are critical. He recommends daily supplementation of 1200 mg of calcium and 800 IUs of vitamin D. Add these to your routine as early as possible, Dr. Price stresses, ideally before the first signs of bone density loss. Once bone loss is detected, the most effective period of osteoporosis prevention is already behind you. By then, he says, the “horse is already out of the barn, and you’re chasing it with calcium.”

If you are lactose intolerant or have chosen not to eat dairy, you can still get plenty of dietary calcium! Dr. Michael Crow offers these suggestions:

Another key factor is magnesium, which many people are deficient in. Dr. Tasneem Bhatia from the Atlanta Center for Holistic and Integrative Medicine says, “Calcium and magnesium need to be in a two-to-one ratio for best absorption.” Her practice recommends 400 mg of chelated magnesium (a more easily absorbed form) daily.

• Greens like kale, turnip greens and collard greens

• Oranges and orange juice (also available with added calcium)

• Black-eyed peas • Broccoli • Almonds • Edamame (soy beans)

When it comes to cooking with bone-building foods, Dr. Crow says, “Looks like the South has it right!”

• Figs

Dr. Tom Price, an assistant professor of geriatric medicine and gerontology and a physician with Emory Geriatric at Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital, says adequate calcium and vitamin

But how can you tell if your bones are losing density? It’s not exactly like noticing a gray hair or tired feet. Thankfully, diagnosis is a very simple process. Bone densitometry (also called DEXA or DXA) scans are the most reliable and most common means of detecting osteoporosis. This advanced X-ray technology is non-invasive – no IVs or other prep required – and typically involves scanning the lower spine, hips and pelvis area. Results will indicate normal bone mass, low bone mass (osteopenia) or osteoporosis. DEXA scans are recommended for postmenopausal women over 65 and for men over 70, though scans may be

recommended earlier for those with more risk factors. Because of the increased risk for osteoporosis in women, most women should consider having a DEXA scan every two years. Referrals for this scan often come from your OB/GYN and can, in many cases, be performed at the same location and in the same visit as a mammogram.

Treating Osteopenia and Osteoporosis Once low bone mass has been detected, most care providers will immediately prescribe calcium (1200 mg) and vitamin D (2000 IUs) supplements. Vitamin B-12 supplementation, particularly in men, can also help with retaining bone mass. Lifestyle changes, such as smoking cessation and beginning weight-bearing exercise, are also prescribed at this point. If nutritional supplementation and lifestyle changes do not indicate improvement, the next step is medication, typically bisphosphonates such as Fosamax, Boniva or Actonel.

Whether you are above the age of 65 or still in your 20s, you can still take steps to improve your bone health. Prevention, early diagnosis and good, evidence-based care can keep you on your feet and improve your overall quality of life.

Exciting News:

MEDICARE NOW COVERS 3D MAMMOGRAPHY • Significant reduction in recall rates by up to 40 percent. 5,7 • Lower dose and faster 3D mammography through C-View™ software, which uses 3D data to create 2D images, eliminating the 2D X-ray exposure and shorting the exam scan time. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Early detection using the latest technology. We offer BRCA cancer screening testing. Ask us about it.

Carolyn G. Dudley has over 30 years’ experience in breast imaging. She attended Bryn Mawr College, Howard University and completed her Diagnostic Radiology residency at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan. She is board certified by the American Board of Radiology and is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. Dr. Dudley was one of the pioneers in developing techniques to diagnose breast cancer utilizing MRI. Presently, she has a private practice in Atlanta, Georgia where she offers patients a wide range of outpatient diagnostic services in a convenient and patient-friendly environment. er practice is the first nonhospital facility in Georgia to offer the latest advancement in mammography: 3D Mammography (breast tomosynthesis). In addition, Dr. Dudley provides 2D Digital Mammography, bone densitometry and ultrasound utilizing the most up-to-date technology available.

EXCITING NEWS Diagnostic Radiology is pleased to announce that beginning in January 2015 3D mammograms for Medicare patients are now covered by Medicare insurance.

The American Cancer Society says that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.1 3D mammography is an advanced, clinically proven screening and diagnostic tool designed for early breast cancer detection. With conventional digital mammography, the radiologist is viewing all the complexities of the breast in one image. Sometimes breast tissue can overlap, giving the illusion of an abnormal area, or hide a small cancer. During the 3D mammogram, the X-ray arm sweeps over the breast taking multiple low dose images. Then, a computer produces a 3D image in one millimeter slices, decreasing tissue overlap. With the new C-View™ software, the 3D data is used to create the 2D images, eliminating the need for an additional X-ray exposure. esearchers are finding that ologic breast tomosynthesis combined with 2D mammography provides: • Greater than 25 percent improvement in overall cancer detection rates, finding 40 percent more invasive cancers than conventional 2D mammography alone.3-5 • Better visualization of masses, distortions and asymmetric densities.6

What should I expect during the 3D mammography screening exam? 3D mammography is performed at the same time as the 2D mammogram with the same system. There is no additional compression required and the exam time may be just about the same or shorter than a 2D exam. Is there more radiation dose? With the lower dose 3D mammography, very low X-ray energy is used during the exam, just about the same as a standard 2D digital mammogram, and lower than a traditional film mammogram. Who can have a 3D mammogram exam? It is approved for all women who would be undergoing a standard mammogram, in both the screening and diagnostic settings. What is the difference between a screening and a diagnostic mammogram? A screening mammogram is your annual mammogram that is done every year. Sometimes the radiologist may ask you to come back for follow-up images, called a diagnostic mammogram, to rule out an unclear area in the breast or if there is a breast complaint that needs to be evaluated. Diagnostic mammogram focuses on the area of abnormality or the area of complaint. It is important to have the original images available if you go to a different facility for your follow-up exam. Please call Diagnostic Radiology Ultrasound & Breast Center at (404) 252-3430 to schedule your lower dose 3D mammogram.

HEALTH TX PROCEDURE? A: The Tenex Health TX procedure is named after the Tenex Health Corporation who developed a method for treating tendonitis. It allows you to treat tendon related joint pain without having to use an incision or surgical technique and is performed using a very advanced needle that dissolves the bad tissue near the tendon.

Q: WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THIS PROCEDURE? A: Anyone who is otherwise healthy, active and has noticed a fairly significant amount of pain of the elbow, knee, ankle, foot or shoulder is a good candidate for this procedure. This procedure is the next step after conservative treatments for those who want to remain active.

through a post-procedure process where they keep the oint inactive for a few days, then slowly progressive activity. They will then return to the office after four weeks to ensure that the healing process is ongoing), and at six weeks they are able to return to their full level of activity.

WITH INSURANCE? A: So far, of all the procedures I ve done, patients have been covered to some degree with insurance. Our office works directly with the insurance company to get that clearance before we perform the procedure.

PROCEDURE ENTAIL? A: First, a visit to my office where an ultrasound evaluation is performed. I look for a specific type of in ury to the tendon, which could be either scar or dead tissue at the spot where you are most tender. The Tenex procedure may be performed under local anesthesia. During the procedure, most patients feel the sensation of pressure, but there is no pain.

Q: HOW LONG DOES THIS PROCEDURE TAKE? A: Five to si minutes. Once the procedure is complete, you are then sent to the recovery room for minutes and able to return home. From there, the patient will go

trokes occur when blood flow to the brain is compromised, leading to the death of brain tissue. While strokes can be devastating, new medications and other treatments can lead to dramatic recovery, but only if the stroke is identified and treated quickly. The American Stroke Association recommends using the acronym FAST to remember the signs and symptoms of a stroke: • F – Facial drooping on one side • A – Arm weakness that impairs raising the arm on one side • S – Speech difficulty, either impaired speech or difficulty understanding speech

Traditional “clot-busting” medications had to be used within three hours of the onset of stroke symptoms, which made many patients ineligible for treatment. Newer guidelines and neurointerventional procedures, available at major stroke centers, allow more patients to benefit from improved long-term outcomes. If you notice yourself or anyone around you experiencing these signs, note the time, call 911 and get to the hospital immediately. To reduce your risk of having a stroke, be sure to eat well, exercise regularly, don’t smoke, and follow up with your primary doctor, watching closely to allow early diagnosis and good control of: • Blood pressure

s we age, our bodies often set new limits for us that didn’t exist in years past. Are supplements a good way to push past those limits, exercise at our maximum level and receive all the nutrients we need? Go for the Goal

If you’re considering taking a supplement, you likely have a goal in mind already. Maybe you want to push through fatigue during an after-work gym session, so you’re looking for a supplement with caffeine. Or perhaps your muscles need extra help recovering after a workout, so you want to try a protein supplement. Like many, you may just want to round out your daily diet with a multivitamin. “Some people may use supplements to fill in dietary gaps, meet their fitness goals, support eye health, gain weight or for a number of other reasons,” says Marie Spano, sports dietitian and sports nutritionist for the Atlanta Hawks.

These top 10 best-selling supplements for people over 40 show that many shoppers use supplements to round out their diets and to support their fitness routines

• Omega-3s • Calcium • Multivitamin • Vitamin D

Those scenarios are common, and the supplement industry has plenty of options to meet your needs. According to Dr. Michael Bakheet, who specializes in sports medicine with Kaiser Permanent of Georgia, “Those wanting sports performance enhancements may benefit from caffeine, whey protein and creatine,” which can provide added energy and increased muscle mass. Dr. Bakheet says they have been well studied and are safe. Spano agrees, pointing out, “Creatine monohydrate is so effective that clinical trials are examining how this supplement may help those with diseases that affect the muscles.” In addition to fitness supplements, many dietary supplements such as omega-3s, vitamin D and calcium have been shown to offer health benefits. Knowing that some effective options are on the market, it’s time to hit the store.

Seal the Deal When shopping for food, you likely keep a sharp eye out for labels such as “USDA Organic,” “Non-GMO Project Verified” or “Fair Trade Certified.” When purchasing a supplement, you should be just as discerning, if not more so, because regulation is less strict than you may expect. The 1994 Dietary Supplementation Health and Education Act allowed nutritional supplements to reach the marketplace without FDA approval or providing proof that the substances are safe or actually do what they claim to do. “It just requires that the substances contained in the product are on the label,” explains Dr. David Marshall, director of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Sports Medicine Program. “There is no requirement for studies proving short or long-term safety with product use. This lack of regulation and high risk of impurities can put the consumer at significant risk when purchasing and using these products.” Some supplements do go through independent certification processes, such as those by the National Science Foundation (NSF) or the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP), and these will be marked with a seal. As with any product, your best bet is to examine the ingredients for yourself. “Buy products with detailed ingredient lists so you know what part of a plant a particular product is using, the dose and where it is manufactured,” says Dr. Tasneem Bhatia, medical director at Atlanta Center for Holistic and Integrative Medicine. Shahida Rashid, clinical nutrition manager at Emory Saint

Joseph’s Hospital, also encourages would-be buyers to look for supplements with no additives, colors or fillers. And keep in mind that the ingredient label isn’t perfect, either. “Just because a supplement says it has 500 mg of one ingredient, it may not contain that amount,” Spano explains. Studies by Harvard researchers and the U.S. Office of Inspector General show that some supplements live up to their label claims, while others do not. Rashid adds, “Remember to do your research, visit the manufacturer’s website and research ingredients in the product. If it sounds too good to be true, it likely is.”

Supplement Side Effects Whether you’ve decided to try a diet supplement or a postworkout protein shake, be sure to consider any possible side effects. For example, according to Rashid, prolonged, excessive intake of protein can be associated with decreased kidney function and osteoporosis. “Remember, too much of a good thing is not a good thing,” she says. “Mega doses of vitamins and minerals can have adverse effects and even death. Always consult your doctor or a registered dietitian when taking supplements.” Even if the supplement itself does not cause problems, it could potentially interfere with any existing health concerns or other medications you’re taking. For example, “Many high antioxidant supplements are not recommended during chemo or radiation,” Dr. Bhatia says. Vitamin E is another one to watch out for, Spano says, because “it is a blood thinner, and

your cardiologist may not want you taking high doses of this supplement.” She adds that men should be especially careful with vitamin E supplements because high doses may increase prostate cancer risk. Whatever supplements you’re interested in, it’s a good idea to consult your physician before taking anything.

Food for Fitness

STRENGTH: “Lean meats can help with iron and amino acid deficiencies,” Dr. Bhatia says, providing protein and helping muscles rebuild after a tough workout. If it’s strong bones you’re looking for, opt for calcium-dense greens like spinach, kale and collard greens. PAIN RELIEF: “Turmeric has great antiinflammatory and pain relief properties,” Dr. Bakheet says, as do citrus fruits.

“Do your research. Visit the manufacturer’s website and research ingredients in the product. If it sounds too good to be true, it likely is.”

When it comes down to everyday health and fitness, you’re likely better — Shahida Rashid, Clinical Nutrition Manager, off eating a nutrient-dense Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital RECOVERY: Water. diet and getting a variety “Many people forget this of physical activity rather one simple ingredient than relying on supplements. “I generally don’t recommend to their diet,” Dr. Bakheet says. “Simply put, staying well ‘energy boosters’ or supplements for fitness,” says Dr. Maziar hydrated will help every cell in your body function at Rezvani, director of Avicenna Integrative Medicine and maximum efficiency.” Avicenna Allergy and Asthma. “These products are releasing what is already inside of you. bestfitness There are so many Q choices when it comes to

working out. What are the best exercises for my time and money?

Photos (clockwise from top left) courtesy of Sara Hanna Photography, Status Athletic Club, Ben Robi Photography, Madison James, Chris Ozment, Lisa Tanker-Potts

This simple truth will always guide you toward the best exercises: the more movement an exercise requires, the more results it will deliver. The more muscles you use performing it, the more authentically it will shape and train your body. Amazing results come from full body exercises, and they create muscular balance too. Love the way you look and feel about your body with these time-tested exercises: squats, deadlifts, lunges, pushups, planks, burpees and mountain climbers. Tammy Stokes, West Coast Workout and Tammy Stokes Lifestyle

What product can help me get a good workout away from the gym?

Try the Tension Fit Trainer (TFT). It is a new portable fitness device that provides a full body strength and cardio workout. TFT challenges the muscle at its weakest (eccentric) and strongest (concentric) points, resulting in progressive strength and endurance training. You only need 20 minutes to get an effective workout with TFT and gain lean muscle. Lisa Tanker Potts, Boutique Body Fitness

Which is more important, Q strength training or cardio?

Ideally, you should pick a training that combines the two, but if you’re a cardio junkie, please don’t neglect your strength training. Building lean muscle increases your metabolism, causing you to burn more calories just from living your life. Getting stronger will also make your cardio training easier. A stronger runner will be faster than one who only runs and doesn’t strength train. And ladies, don’t worry. Full body strength training will not make you bulky! Delaine Ross, Condition Kettlebell Gym

0415_056-057_FITNESS.indd 57

What are some simple things people can Q do in their everyday routine to see faster health and fitness results?

Diet is key. That includes cutting out a lot of junk food or anything high in sugar. For physical activity, use a fitness tracker like Fitbit or Nike+ FuelBand. These track your sleeping patterns, steps and distances you’ve walked, calories burned and more, and they help you see your fitness goals becoming a reality. Joey Dillon, Status Athletic Club

Healthy Lifestyle on the Go By Madison James, radio/TV personality and lifestyle enthusiast

Being active should be a fun experience – not one that you dread. Keeping your activity fresh is the best way to combat this problem. I applied my own advice to my workout routine and added a funky, fun spin class at Cyc Fitness. Cyc Fitness is located in Buckhead and incorporates boxing, volleyball, weights and cardio all while jamming to the hottest hits. I had so much fun that I forgot about the burn in my legs and the sweat dripping down my nose. This is also a great way to get in shape if you’re looking for a low-impact activity. Cycling is easy on the joints, and anyone can ride a stationary bike! Stay motivated by changing it up with a class like this. Check out for more information.

Step into the Limelight We all have our sights set on spring and patio weather, but you should know that virtues of lime do not lie merely in your favorite margarita recipe! Using seasonal offerings enhances natural beauty, and April gives us limes at their peak. Spas often use lime and lime essential oil in scrubs, lotions and cellulite treatments because this particular oil tones skin, helps with blocked pores, boosts circulation and acts as a sponge for toxins. Try fresh lime juice at home in salad dressings or guacamole to reap both nutritional and beauty-related rewards!

Glycosylation occurs when a glucose molecule abnormally reacts with proteins, blocking the passage of nutrients and waste products between the cells. Collagen, the most common protein found in skin, is especially vulnerable to glycosylation and leads to loss of elastin, which results in aging of the skin. According to Dr. Monte Slater of Aesthetic Body Sculpture Clinic, New Youth Skin Care is the only skin care system to address this and many other causes of aging skin directly by attacking and reducing glycosylation effects. A Hand Up to a Home

Home is where the heart is, but it’s also where many Americans’ investments are. Investing in a house has a positive impact on personal wealth and community stability, but buying a home – especially for people supporting a family on a low income – presents many challenges. If your entire paycheck is dedicated to the daily finances of life, it can be next to impossible to save the amount needed for a down payment or qualify for a traditional mortgage, preventing many hardworking adults and parents from making that investment.

Volunteers raise the first wall of the Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Metro Atlanta home for a deserving family in Mableton. The home build on Valentine’s Day kicked off the 2015 build season for the nonprofit that serves Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Counties.

Habitat for Humanity is best known for its signature “builds” that bring the community together to build a house for a deserving family. But in addition to actually building the house, Habitat also helps families by making their purchasing requirements more realistic. The Atlanta Habitat for Humanity website details the benefits, such as a no-interest mortgage and low closing costs – nothing more than an $800 “good faith deposit.” Habitat also offers perks such as energy efficient building standards and brand new Whirlpool appliances. If you’re ready to swing a hammer for your fellow Atlantans, join Habitat for Humanity’s Northwest Metro Atlanta affiliate as they break ground on a new build site on April 2. Volunteering with Habitat requires no specialized experience – onsite training is provided for anyone interested in participating. Check out other Atlanta area affiliates by visiting and typing in your zip code. Another great way to help is through the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Donate your new or gently used furniture, appliances, cabinets, building materials and more to any ReStore location, which will then sell these items at a fraction of retail price in order to raise money for more builds. A new Habitat ReStore opened in late March in Roswell, and you can find a full list of local ReStore locations at

Crossroads Hospice

The right bra can make any woman feel confident and comfortable. But did you know they can also lead to a job? Local lingerie shop INTIMACY is collecting gently used bras for an organization called Free the Girls, which helps survivors of sex trafficking across the globe go into business for themselves. The women in the program sell the bras, providing them with income, a safe work environment with female clients and a flexible schedule that encourages their ongoing education. Last year, INTIMACY’s stores collected an impressive 10,000 bras in the month of October alone, so they have now expanded the bra drive to a year-round initiative. Bring your donations to INTIMACY in Phipps Plaza, 3500 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, GA.

At Crossroads Hospice, staff and volunteers provide compassion, support and day-to-day engagement to patients nearing the end of their lives. As a volunteer, you can support patients directly in their homes or assisted living facilities with conversation, puzzles and even bingo. When you sign up, you will undergo volunteer training about the basics of hospice, your role, and certain common health conditions such as dementia. You can also support the organization with administrative volunteer time or bereavement support for families. Call (770) 270-9898 or email to sign up.

Julia Curran-Villarreal

t s e B f sel

When you put yourself out there, you sometimes have to push through some fear and discomfort. Julia Curran-Villarreal figured out a new way to push through it: jump over it! After decades away from track and field, this almost 55-year-old Marietta mom picked up her old sport of high jumping and now competes at the Masters level all across the country. Last season, she won gold in 10 of her 11 meets, and she is currently ranked number one in the country and number eight in the world. Curran-Villarreal says, “I am trying to approach this phase of my life with a sense of fearlessness. If there are things I’ve dreamed of doing, I am going to try them.” High jumping could be just the beginning.

In high school, what originally interested you in track and field?

I participated in gymnastics in elementary and middle school and thought that was “my sport,” but one day in ninth grade, I walked by someone high jumping indoors. Someone suggested I try that, and it stuck. I jumped very successfully throughout high school.

How did you get back into high jumping as an adult?

My first competition as an adult was in 2013 at age 53. I loved that my boys, then 8 and 10, were doing sports, and I was reminiscing about my time on a team and how much I loved high jumping. On a whim, I Googled “track and field for grown-ups” and found the Masters track and field community. I was thrilled to find out there were competitions for adults.

How did your first competition go?

I went to my first meet here in Georgia just to observe, but I wore a T-shirt and shorts just in case I got up the nerve to register and compete – I did, and I won my age division. I haven’t stopped since. I got more serious in 2014 and began working with a trainer who specializes in competitive athletes.

Tell us about your trainer.

My trainer is David Schrader of Neurosport Functional Training. He works with me on flexibility, balance and strength training. He understands the challenges of an older athlete and is very encouraging but pushes me incredibly hard.

What competitions are on the horizon this year?

My 2015 indoor season began in February with the USATF Southeastern Masters Championship in North Carolina. I will also compete in the USATF National Indoor Championships this month. I have also qualified for the 2015 National Senior Games, which are in July in Minnesota, and the World Masters Athletics in Lyon, France in August. The WMAs, held every two years, are like the Olympics for Masters athletes, and it will be an exciting competition.

What have you learned about yourself since resuming your sport?

It can be scary to put yourself out there and compete. You may fail. You may get hurt, look silly or not perfect. We Masters athletes can’t perform like we did 30 years ago, but we continue to compete for the love of it. It’s the absolute definition of doing “your personal best.”

What inspires you about your fellow Masters athletes?

Most of these Masters athletes are in better shape than most people half their age. They train hard, have a great attitude and never give up. They epitomize the belief that whether you succeed or fail is not as important as putting forth the effort. 66
