Many of us simply don't have the time to get to the gym. With busy work schedules and endless responsibilities, it becomes very difficult to fit in a visit to the gym. But this is no excuse not to get some exercise. You do not need a huge investment for home gym equipment (you actually don't need any with a solid bodyweight workout), but here are three pieces of home exercise equipment I would recommend: Swiss Ball The swiss ball has actually been around for numerous decades but it's taken some time for it to be adopted by the general public. It originated in Italy in the early 1960's by a toy manufacturer. It wasn't long before it was discovered as being a great rehabilitation tool by physical therapists all across Europe. But this rehabilitation tool didn't make its way to the US until the 1980's (where the term "swiss ball" was coined). In the 1990's the fitness industry exploded around this new fitness tool and now we see it everywhere. There are hundreds of exercises you can perform on the swiss ball to target nearly every muscle group of the body. They are particularly effective for targeting your stabilizing muscles. They come in different sizes and different qualities. Invest in a good swiss ball and you'll have an endless list of exercises to choose from. Resistance Bands Resistance bands have been around for quite some time as well. Also considered a great rehabilitation tool, resistance bands can be a great resistance training tool. There are hundreds of options to choose from. They differ in shape, colour, elasticity and material. Pick out a quality set of resistance bands (the types with handles) that provide easy, medium and difficult resistances. This will help you work your way up and build strength and muscle. The unique thing about resistance bands that differs from regular resistance training is that the resistance increases throughout the lift. As you stretch the resistance band, more tension is created in the band so the resistance increases as you lift. Get yourself a great set of resistance bands and get to work! Push-up stands I do not see these as much in gyms as I would like to. They are an excellent tool that provide you with countless variations for your pushups. They are advantageous in two ways: 1) They provide you with an increased range of motion on your pushups so you can place more stress on the muscles; 2) They allow your wrists to stay aligned (unlike regular pushups) which is great for protecting your wrist joints. They are very inexpensive and portable and easy to use. Check out more information on performing pushups everyday.
