This page and opposite, top: Lake Champlain Transportation’s southernmost crossing, Charlotte, Vermont to Essex, New York, is not only a year-round crossing open for commuting traffic (ice conditions permitting), but also provides some spectacular views of scenic Lake Champlain as well as the Green Mountains and Adirondacks. The boat shown in both images is the M/V Governor Aiken, named for the great-grandfather of the article’s author, Mark Aiken.
