Teams are encouraged to identify local producers and raise funds through food sales and fundraising events at local restaurants to pay for ingredients and the $150 event registration fee. Each team also has a coach who is typically a local chef or is involved in food service. The Jr Iron Chef Vermont competition is open to all sixth through twelfth graders in public and private schools, as well as students who are home schooled. Each middle school and high school can send two teams to the competition, and students often stay on their teams until they graduate from high school. 4
