In order to collect feedback on firm and attorney work within specific regions, Best Lawyers curates “metro areas.” For research purposes, smaller and more rural cities located within a reasonable distance to larger cities are combined into single geographical regions—metro areas—to help us collect as much feedback and data for specific individuals, firms, and practice areas as possible. We also award “Lawyer of the Year” accolades through these metro area distinctions.

ABOUT BEST LAWYERS For more than three decades, Best Lawyers lists have been compiled by conducting exhaustive peer-review surveys in which tens of thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers. If the votes for an attorney are positive enough for inclusion in Best Lawyers , that attorney must maintain those votes in subsequent polls to remain on the list for each edition. Lawyers are not permitted to pay any fee to participate in or be included on our lists. Best Lawyers’ peer-reviewed listings are now published in almost 75 countries around the world, and our presence has grown substantially in the international legal community. In the U.S. alone, Best Lawyers lists reach more than 23 million readers through newspapers and regional magazines. The 25th Edition of The Best Lawyers in America (2019) includes almost 60,000 attorneys in 145 practice areas, covering all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and inclusion in this year’s publication is based on more than 7.8 million detailed evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers.
METHODOLOGY
1 NOMINATION Lawyers can be nominated by anyone but themselves.
2 PEER REVIEW Current listed lawyers provide feedback on the nominee’s work.
3 ANALYSIS OF FEEDBACK Results are calculated and feedback is reviewed.
4 ELIGIBILITY CHECK Nominees are confirmed to be in good standing with their local bar associations.
5 RESULTS RELEASED Firms are informed of results and the list is published.
Questions? Comments? For additional copies, more information on Best Lawyers or to subscribe to your regional edition of Best Lawyers magazine, please email To nominate an attorney for the next edition, please visit our info@bestlawyers.com website at www.BestLawyers.com. or call 718.509.6095. 4 |

Peter S. Strassner ENVIRONMENTAL LAW St. Louis, MO
P
eter Strassner, a partner in Thompson Coburn’s St. Louis office and co-chair of the firm’s environmental group, sees himself as a problem solver. When it comes to the most rewarding areas of his practice, he says, “The things that jump to my mind are helping clients achieve their goals.” Looking at his record, it’s clear that Strassner and his team have solved plenty: They won a unanimous decision in the Supreme Court over a case for Exxon Mobil, successfully represented BNSF railways regarding a derailment near Illinois that spilled crude oil, and assisted pro bono in the cleanup of a 10acre superfund site for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis. Central to Strassner’s commitment to solutions is his drive for success, in no uncertain terms: “I like winning, and environmental [law] gives me that chance. There are definitely situations where you win or lose, and I get a great deal of satisfaction out of winning for a client.” In large part, he credits his proven record to his colleagues at the firm. “I practice with an incredibly strong group of environmental lawyers,” Strassner says. “We’re collaborative; we work together; we staff things lean, but there’s always someone to talk to if I have unique problem. That sort of collegial, collaborative practice with a group that I regard as being among the most talented environmental lawyers in the region is just tremendously rewarding.” If Strassner and his group make it look easy, he will admit that the law itself is anything but. Stringent rules and regulations often stack the rules against the client, and it’s the attorney’s job to bring a rational approach to proceedings where the stakes are often high. The EPA might implement policies that work on a macro level but are difficult to implement on a micro level, and solutions to these problems are rarely—if ever— one size fits all. Those hardships aren’t something to shy away from. In fact, Strassner says he finds motivation in the most difficult cases. “You get to bring some creativity to move things along in a constructive way, and that’s kind of neat,” he says. “Sometimes what I like about environmental law is the flipside of the challenges, so to speak.”
