A Reputation for Results Jason Adess on Berger Schatz’s Highly Respected Family Lawyers Since its founding in 1987, Berger Schatz has become one of the largest and most respected law firms in the country for matrimonial and family law. Key to that success has been the firm’s addition of lawyers like Jason Adess, a principal at the firm who has exclusively handled divorce law for nearly two decades. “The reputation this firm has achieved is the result of having top-notch partners who practice at the highest level of the field,” Adess observes. “By building such a highly respected group, we’ve been able to attract more business, and therefore hire talented younger lawyers to help service those cases. As a result, we’re really proud of the organization we have from top to bottom; the attorneys here are truly some of the highest quality family lawyers in the nation.” With 36 lawyers, Berger Schatz is able to act as a comprehensive litigation resource in the family law field. The firm’s attorneys provide the full range of matrimonial law services, from prenuptial and postnuptial agreements to marital settlements and parenting agreements; and, when necessary, the firm has litigated contested issues at the trial and appellate levels with great success. As a larger practice, Berger Schatz can also ensure that its clients have access to a breadth of intellectual and tactical resources. “The firm operates very much like a think tank, and I can say that it’s tremendously rewarding to be surrounded by these brilliant family lawyers,” Adess says. “They are quality people who want to do the right and ethical thing by their clients; so being able to call on them to gut-check a strategy for dealing with a problem or to seek input on an interesting or novel family law issue is truly invaluable. In part, it’s the reason why the firm has prospered for as long as it has and grown as much as it has.” Still, Adess, like all of the firm’s lawyers, prides himself on having personally built a multifaceted practice, capable of handling all aspects of family and matrimonial law. “The best family lawyers are those who are as passionate about dealing with financial issues as they are about working on child custody issues,” he notes. “Because ultimately, it’s rare to have a case where you don’t have to address all of those matters at once.” Adess is well known for his far-reaching experience in the family law field. Over the years, he has successfully represented clients in trials, negotiations, and appeals on a wide range of issues. And as his reputation has grown, he has increasingly taken on cases involving complex personal assets and highprofile clients. “I’ve had the privilege of handling matters involving prominent sports figures and CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, and these cases are defined not only by the personalities involved, but also by the complexity of the financial and familial issues,” Adess says.

Jason G. Adess

Given his reputation for handling prominent cases, Adess, along with many of the firm’s other partners, has been honored with an AV Preeminent-rating from Martindale-Hubbell. He has also been included in Illinois Super Lawyers and Leading Lawyers, and he credits these recognitions to his personal approach when representing clients. “Some lawyers view divorce simply as a business transaction —they’re not terribly interested in the human side of things,” Adess says. “But I have a keen interest in how these issues impact people, and I’ve found that by first understanding the psychology of a situation and how the client feels about an issue, I can put myself in a better position to achieve the result that is in the client’s best interest.” Bill Rudnick, a partner in DLA Piper’s Chicago office who has worked on cases with Adess, notes: “In an area of law that is better known for high drama, Jason brings high-quality legal skills. He is able to strike the balance between being aggressive and not over playing his hand. And that makes him very effective.” Above all, Adess is committed to achieving results that effect positive change in his clients’ lives. As he explains, seeing the tangible benefits of his work remains one of the most rewarding aspects of his practice: “When individuals are going through the divorce process, it’s hard for them to focus on anything else beyond that, because ultimately the litigation or negotiation in their case involves the things they hold most dear—their children, their marriage, or the money they’ve accumulated over a lifetime. So being able to help people through that extraordinarily difficult period and see them transition to a happier place is deeply satisfying year after year.”

arris | Winick LLP is a boutique commercial litigation firm known for its skillful handling of high-stakes litigation, particularly in the area of construction law. With more than 100 years of combined experience, the firm’s lawyers are able to represent clients throughout the United States, from litigating cases in state and federal courts, to handling arbitration matters and appellate work. In addition, the firm’s transactional practice has represented clients on numerous multimilliondollar construction projects, including a professional sports stadium, a new hospital pavilion, a major addition to one of Chicago’s renowned cultural institutions, multiple buildings

at one of Chicago’s leading universities, and many high-rise residential towers. “We have practiced in the areas of construction law and commercial litigation for such a long period of time that we’ve come to know the construction industry inside and out,” says partner Robert Harris. “And as a consequence of that, we have a significant edge when it comes to handling complex litigation and transactional matters for our clients, who in many cases have been our clients for years.” Indeed, because of its success, Harris | Winick LLP has been ranked Tier 1 nationally for construction litigation by U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” in 2014. And the firm’s deep

industry knowledge has resulted in three of its attorneys being selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America: Jeffrey Winick; Robert Harris; and John-Paul Lujan, who worked as an architect at a major architectural firm before becoming a lawyer. While the firm prides itself on its group of highly skilled trial lawyers, Winick—who in 2014 was also selected by his peers as Best Lawyers’ Lawyer of the Year in Chicago for construction litigation—notes, “Our focus remains on earning the trust and confidence of our clients. And to that end, we aim to provide cost-effective legal services in a manner where our clients can rely upon our judgment, both inside and outside of the courtroom, to achieve their results.”

METHODOLOGY Inclusion in Best Lawyers is based entirely on peer-review. The methodology is designed to capture, as accurately as possible, the consensus opinion of leading lawyers about the professional abilities of their colleagues within the same geographical area and legal practice area.

Best Lawyers employs a sophisticated, conscientious, rational, and transparent survey process designed to elicit meaningful and substantive evaluations of the quality of legal services. Our belief has always been that the quality of a peer-review survey is directly related to the quality of its voting pool.

hroughout his 19-year legal career, acclaimed real estate and leasing attorney Dov Pinchot has focused on building meaningful relationships throughout the industry, and with his recognition in 2014 as Best Lawyers’ Chicago Lawyer of the Year for real estate law, Pinchot has proved the efficacy of this approach. “For me, the Best Lawyers award reflects that if you really care about people, you can emerge from the trenches with their respect,” Pinchot says. “Coming out of law school I knew I wasn’t a litigator at heart—I had the idea that building relationships with clients, opposing parties, and opposing counsel would help get deals done more amicably and efficiently. The idea is to set pretense and ego aside. And that continues to be how I approach my practice.” While Pinchot began his career handling

corporate law, he soon transitioned to real estate, allowing him to spend more time negotiating deals. In 2009, he joined Freeborn & Peters LLP, where he serves as a partner and co-chair of the firm’s renowned real estate practice group. “With leasing and real estate deals, my goal is to help parties agree to agree,” Pinchot observes. “At Freeborn, I found a firm where caring and empathy are core values—we work hard to understand the concerns of our clients, and even the opposing party, allowing us to move deals forward.” Pinchot has represented many of the country’s leading businesses in major leasing, acquisition, and development transactions throughout the United States and around the world. As part of his practice, Pinchot is constantly working to find creative solutions to his clients’ problems; and because

of that, he was able to help clients profit from opportunities even during the economic downturn. “I have been lucky to work with clients who took over failed projects and needed to turn them around quickly. They looked at me to accelerate the leasing and closing process,” Pinchot explains. “So, much of my leasing and real estate work continued through the downturn.” In addition to his real estate practice, Pinchot is president of the board of trustees for his children’s high school, the Ida Crown Jewish Academy, and serves as a governing board member and longtime volunteer legal counsel for the Chicago Zoological Society, which operates the Brookfield Zoo. Pinchot and his wife, Laurie, have five children, one of whom (Edon) was a semi-finalist singer on the TV show America’s Got Talent.

My parents were both family law lawyers and I enjoyed listening to them discuss the events of the day at the dinner table; interesting, fascinating, and rewarding work. What would you say is the most rewarding aspect of practicing in your area of law? The most rewarding aspect of being a

from even seeing the children without someone present. As a result of that decision, the children prospered and today are productive citizens. How has the legal industry in your field changed in the last 30 years? The field of family law has changed drastically in the last 30 years. I believe the laws are fairer to women and better protect children today than before, and the field today has many more women attorneys. The court respects family law practitioners more than in the past; also, there is a far greater use of experts today. What does being included in Best Lawyers for 30 years mean to you? Being included in Best Lawyers for 30 years has definitely helped my practice. Lawyers from my home state as well as those from out of state have referred me cases as a result of my name appearing

in Best Lawyers. Anyone who appears in Best Lawyers is recognized as an attorney who is respected by his peers and worthy of handling cases in his field. What is one piece of advice you would give to new attorneys? One piece of advice I would give to new attorneys is very simple: return calls. Attorneys get in more trouble by not returning calls than for any other reason. What is the biggest obstacle you see for your practice area in the next 30 years? The greatest obstacle for family law today is the court’s reliance on psychologist, psychiatrists, and social workers in child custody cases. The judges do not exercise their own discretion and common sense but rather slavishly rely on these supposed experts to resolve custody issues.

For entertainment lawyer Linda Mensch, assisting clients in the music industry isn’t just her job—it’s her passion. “I’ve been working in the music industry for close to four decades, and I’ve really appreciated the opportunity I’ve had to build relationships with creative people in that arena, including artists, producers, music publishers, record company executives, and other lawyers in the business,” Mensch says. Mensch, who has directed her own law practice since 1985, focuses on entertainment and media transactions. She has also served in nearly every possible unpaid position for the National Recording Academy, which presents the Grammys Awards. And since 2010, she has been of counsel at the international business and litigation firm Bryan Cave LLP, where, among her duties, she handles matters relating to the music rights of the firm’s Fortune 500 clients. “I’m a good fit for Bryan Cave LLP because I have the contacts and relationships in the industry to get questions answered quickly and economically,” Mensch observes. “I’m also always looking around to see what I can do to help clients further their business or take a project to the next level.” Beyond the music industry, Mensch is currently serving as an executive producer of the documentary, The Ella Jenkins Story, having previously won two Emmys for her work in producing documentaries. She is also the immediate past president of the Chicago-based Lawyers for Creative Arts, which provides pro bono legal services to artists. And she is highly active in charitable organizations that address homelessness, such as A Safe Haven Foundation and the Chicago Christian Industrial League.

As a co-founder of The Health Law Consultancy, Jack Rovner has built a national reputation for his innovative approach to health care law. Rovner launched the firm with attorney Kathryn Roe in 2009, and after just one year the group received a Tier 1 ranking in Chicago for health care law from U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms,” being selected every year since. Rovner was also named as Best Lawyers’ 2014 Lawyer of the Year in Chicago for health care law. “During the 2008 election period, both parties were discussing health care reform, so we decided to start a health care law firm that would allow health organizations to capitalize on the opportunities and manage the challenges of an evolving health care system,” Rovner explains. “We also wanted to start a boutique firm to try a different way of delivering services in terms of managing costs for our clients. To that end, we offer clients predictable pricing models that allow for assured client budgeting.” Currently, Rovner’s firm is working with health insurers throughout the country, helping them meet the new regulations created under the Affordable Care Act. For health technology and services companies, the firm offers counsel on regulatory and data privacy and security issues, and it also advises clients on the structuring of joint venture arrangements. “We enjoy working with forwardlooking organizations that are trying to innovate and improve the delivery of health care, whether by reducing costs or finding better ways to provide services,” Rovner notes.

aner Muchin is one of the oldest and largest law firms in the country dedicated exclusively to the representation of employers in the areas of labor and employment law, employment litigation, business immigration, and employee benefits. “The firm prides itself on staffing cases very efficiently and really being bottom line sensitive,” says managing partner, Joe Gagliardo. “We are relationship builders who understand how we fit into our clients’ bigger picture. We seek to resolve our clients’ problems, not make a living off them.” According to senior partner, Carl Tominberg, the firm’s creativity and pragmatism have helped it secure many highprofile clients, such as the Trump Organization, the state of Illinois, the Chicago Bulls, PepsiCo, the Chicago White Sox, and Harpo Productions. Many of the firm’s clients have been with the firm for 30 years or more. A key to the firm’s client loyalty has been

its dedication to client service, as exemplified by its unique two hour commitment whereby the firm guarantees that every client phone call and email will be returned within two hours or less. “This type of institutional commitment is unheard of in the legal profession,” says Joe Yastrow, the firm’s president. “No other firm we have encountered has ever attempted to duplicate it.” Unparalleled service has led to recognition for many of the firm’s attorneys in publications, such as The Leading Lawyers Network, Super Lawyers, and Chambers and Partners. In addition, Tominberg, Yastrow, and Gagliardo, have been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of The Best Lawyers in America, including the 2014 edition. Additionally, Laner Muchin has received Tier 1 rankings in Chicago for employment law – management, labor law – management, and litigation – labor & employment by U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” in 2014.

“F

ighting for justice” has been the guiding mission at Chicago and Washington, D.C.-based Tobin & Muñoz since it began representing clients 25 years ago. The firm was formed in the early 1980’s when Craig Tobin left the Cook County Public Defender’s office’s Elite Homicide Task Force and joined forces with then judge, Hon. Robert J. Collins, whom the Chicago Tribune has called, “the standard by which all other judges should be measured.” Since then, the firm’s attorneys have used their nationally recognized trial skills to help individuals, small businesses, and corporations recover or protect hundreds of millions of dollars. Not only has name partner Craig Tobin been among a select group of lawyers voted into Best Lawyers for over two decades, but Tobin & Muñoz is regularly cited by Martindale-Hubbel as an AV®-preeminent™ law firm, one of only 5% selected in the United States for this designation.

Founding the firm in 2003, the principals of Harrison & Held, LLP sought to take their years of experience working at Chicago’s most prominent firms and offer that expertise in a more personal, client-focused setting. The result is a boutique practice that provides clients with the background and expertise of a large firm, layered on top of the small-firm benefits of closer relationships and better value. We congratulate our colleagues who have once again been selected as Best Lawyers: Louis S. Harrison (whose practice focuses on estate planning and litigation, post-mortem tax planning, charitable dispositions, gifting strategies and tax planning for closely held companies, and partnerships); Bernard T. Wall

(who represents individuals, family groups, corporate executives and fiduciaries in connection with estate planning, probate administration, and charitable and non-charitable giving); and Stuart Duhl (who practices in state and federal taxation, corporate transactions, business succession and estate planning—including trusts—and non-profit and tax exempt organizations). For 2014, Harrison & Held, LLP has been named a Tier 1 firm in Chicago for Trusts and Estates Law by U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms.” Harrison & Held, LLP congratulates Mr. Harrison for his selection as Best Lawyers’ 2014 Lawyer of the Year for trusts and estates in Chicago.

Daniel R. Stefani and P. André Katz

Katz & Stefani, llc

K

atz & Stefani, LLC is a family law firm committed to efficiently helping clients resolve emotional family issues in a calm and dignified manner. Recognizing that divorce is “a very personal business,” the firm’s lawyers limit their case load, allowing them to give clients significant personal attention. “You need to be comfortable with your divorce lawyer and you need to know you can get in touch with him or her,” explains founding partner Daniel R. Stefani. Combining their total of over 40 years working in family law at some of the largest firms in Illinois, Stefani joined P. André Katz to form Katz & Stefani in 2008. Serving high-profile and high-net-worth individuals in premarital and divorce matters, the firm’s lawyers are particularly attentive to maintaining the privacy of these individuals. Its partners’ strong business, financial, tax, and accounting backgrounds provide a valuable resource for understanding the complexities of business valuations, employee benefits, retirement planning, and other financial issues that arise in divorces involving high-networth individuals. Although skilled and experienced litigators, Katz & Stefani’s founders believe that not every case needs to be litigated. The firm’s lawyers strive

to resolve cases “in the conference room rather than the courtroom,” utilizing alternative dispute resolution methods. Katz & Stefani lawyers are experienced in navigating the complicated waters of interstate and international custody disputes implicating the laws of multiple jurisdictions, the Hague Convention, and the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction Enforcement Act. Sensitive to issues of parental alienation, the firm works with mental health professionals to identify and address the issue as soon as possible. Katz & Stefani lawyers are also adept at negotiating and crafting both premarital and postnuptial agreements. Both Katz and Stefani take a leadership role within their specialty, lecturing and publishing frequently on the topic of family law. Stefani writes a regular column on family law for Chicago Lawyer, and Illinois House Speaker, Michael J. Madigan, has appointed Katz as chairman of the Family Law Study Committee, tasked with rewriting the Illinois Divorce Statute which has now been submitted to Springfield. Both Katz and Stefani have been recognized for many years as two of the best matrimonial attorneys by several publications, and the firm received a First Tier ranking in Chicago for family law by U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” in 2014.
