The Effects of Debts on Our Emotional Behavior It would be interesting to notice and analyze one’s emotional behavior at finding himself in knee deep debts and financial deficiencies. Debts play various havocs in our daily life and add up to our existential dilemmas. Regardless of all warnings and knowledge of its consequences, we find it tough to stay away from its traps and temptations. At times the numerous debt relief options and credit counseling sessions too fall short to help us out of our self-created financial rut. The first and foremost reaction after discovering one’s debts is of denial. The second possible reaction may be simple negligence or avoidance of the matter by hiding the harsh financial facts from friends, family or workplace, as if it is a myth or a nightmare that would pass away! It is because we don’t want to face up the bitter reality or the extent of the trouble. As a result, the debtor stays in a state of confusion and disbelief which perplexes him to take the help of a credit counselor or debt advisor. Again, even if the debtor approaches a debt counselor, his own guilt or denial never allows him to convey the full truth to the counselor which worsens the situation further. Next, when he gets the feel of the grave and impending financial troubles, frustration envelopes him, and as a result, he often loses his temper on himself and his loved ones thereby becomes prone to commit professional mistakes and errors. This mess which is basically created by his own deeds and mismanagement provokes him to create more mess and financial blunders due to loss of presence of mind and lack of rational thinking. The other negative emotions that a debt creates are of acute pessimism and self-pity. A debtor tends to feel helpless and trapped for a lifetime in this ocean of debts, where he prepares himself to succumb, rather than finding a shore of hope, in forms of various debt solutions and debt reduction plans. He might even suddenly feel useless without any sense of responsibility, ignoring the faith and fact that every problem comes with an expiry date, and so is debt.
