High-end restaurant closes in Manchester MANCHESTER — Less than a year after opening, a fine-dining establishment in downtown appears to have closed its doors. The 36 Delux restaurant at 36 Lowell St. has gone dark; its website has been shut down and its Facebook page disappeared on Thursday after some comments were posted regarding the apparent closure. Sara Beaudry, director of marketing and public relations for Intown Manchester, said the restaurant was scheduled to participate in the Taste of Downtown Manchester, set for Sept. 12, but since last week she has been unable to reach the owner. Beaudry said she had heard from owner-chef Rich Girard as recently as Aug. 27, but when she went to drop off a Taste of Downtown poster on the following Thursday, she found that the restaurant was locked up. “I have sent him emails and tried to call as well,” she said, “but haven’t heard anything.” Before being taken down, the restaurant’s website promoted high-end dining options and Girard’s credentials, claiming “Chef Richard Girard comes to us from Nashua where he has the reputation as one of the best chefs in Southern New Hampshire.” Girard was chef of the Black Orchid Grille in Nashua, which closed in January 2010. He then opened Cafe Europa in February 2010 at the former location of the Express Cafe in Nashua. That restaurant closed suddenly and without warning in December 2010. The Nashua Telegraph reported at the time that, “Girard often played an eclectic mix of music in the background, with selections ranging from blues and jazz to bluegrass and Cajun. There was no explanation why the restaurant closed abruptly, and downtown officials were at a loss to offer one.” Girard launched 36 Delux in November 2011. The restaurant got positive reviews in the New Hampshire Union Leader and statewide magazines for its American and French cuisine. Manchester resident Victoria Sullivan had hoped to make reservations at the restaurant for her husband’s birthday last week. “I had a Groupon and I had been saving it,” she said. “We even drove by, and it all seemed very abrupt. There was no closed sign on the door, and they still had tables set up outside.” Groupon issued a refund on the 36 Delux offer. “At least we didn’t lose any money,” she said.
