Information Guide to the Lakeland & Surrounding Area saskatchewan

Message from the Reeve,

The 2020 Cabin Stuffer is an excellent reference guide to the Lakeland area which consists of several municipalities. In preparing to write this year’s Welcome message, it was good to connect with Mayor Denis Daughton, Village of Christopher Lake, and Reeve Lance Fehr, RM of Paddockwood, as we’re all in this together. We rely on our partner municipalities in a variety of ways, but it is especially reassuring during the pandemic crisis that has impacted our community and the world. While we appreciate the provincial and federal support, on a day-to-day basis it is our local leaders, municipal councils and staff, federal, provincial ministry and crown corporation employees, businesses, and residents whether permanent or seasonal, that provide community strength. Kindness, compassion and understanding contribute to that strength which has been and is evident whether it was businesses supporting each other and providing services in innovative and virtual ways, neighbours checking in on each other and offering assistance more broadly, donations to the foodbank and others in need, residents buying locally, and friendly waves and smiles. Thank you to all those people, our health care workers, emergency responders and fire fighters, grocery store and retail workers, teachers, police personnel, and all those who worked to keep us provided for and connected. What will the next weeks and months bring? What activities and facilities will be available? The Cabin Stuffer and Vacationland News publications (printed or internet versions), Facebook, municipal newsletters, and websites are all good sources of information. We are hopeful that services will be expanded, and programs restored … to name a few; the local restaurants, retail stores, contractors, service providers, CPL Recreation, Christopher Lake and Paddockwood Libraries, Great Blue Heron Provincial Park, and Prince Albert National Park. Please support them and our community whenever possible. Be Kind; Stay Safe, Take care! DISTRICT OF LAKELAND - Cheryl Bauer Hyde, Reeve

LAKELAND CITIZENS ON PATROL Supported by

and the R.C.M.P. ! The Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) is a group of volunteers who continue to be dedicated to helping the R.C.M.P. keep Lakeland and area a safe community. Our volunteers patrol the area constantly, looking for signs of criminal activity and reporting to the R.C.M.P. We patrol during the day and night and because we are an anonymous group you never know when we are out there. It is critical that all incidents are reported. Even if you feel nothing is being done, all the reports and information gathered may help toward a prosecution. The R.C.M.P. can then provide our program with information on where the "hot spots" are.

REMEMBER

It is important to report all theft or break-ins to the R.C.M.P. at

310-RCMP (7267)

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP YOU KEEP YOUR PROPERTY AND EQUIPMENT SAFE.

If you are camping - lock up your toys, valuables and coolers – bears may not be the only ones skulking at a campsite! Leaving for the day? Ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your property. Neighbors are the best “watch dogs”! Is your boat and trailer, Quad or Sea-doo easily accessible from the road? Be sure the tongue is not facing the road and it is locked!

Theft or burglary is a crime of opportunity that usually happens to those of us who are least prepared. This summer don’t provide a thief with opportunity – protect your property and equipment! Be sure to lock all of your vehicles!!

THE COPP has made a definite impact on theft and crime in the Lakeland area, but we are always looking for new people to patrol. Patrolling can be done any time you feel like doing so. There are no set timelines or quotas to fulfill. It is a very rewarding feeling to be part of keeping our community safe, and what better way to get out and get familiar with all the areas of the community we live in!

TO ALL OUR VISITORS AND RESIDENTS PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY & KEEP SAFE! Keeping watch over our community!

Follow us on Facebook and watch for more tips in our summer ads in the Vacationland News If you would like to become a member or make a donation to our program, please contact us for more information at P.O. Box 379, Christopher Lake S0J 0N0. 14 | 2020 LAKELAND CABIN STUFFER

10 Outdoor Ideas for Lakelander’s Pandemic got you sticking close to home? Being apart does not necessarily mean being indoors. Here are ten outdoor activities you can enjoy locally that you won’t even need to shop for supplies for. Cattail Weaving Not up for knitting? Try cattail weaving. Gather green cattails of a similar length and let them dry for a couple days. Alternate tip and bottom ends when laying cattails out to even out the different sizes. Individually weave perpendicular cattails over and under to form a mat. Neatly finish the edges by weaving the ends back through several rows. Cone Huck Remember shooting BB guns at empty cans as a child? Here is a low-key version your neighbours will appreciate. Place target on a stump, and stockpile cones to use. Start with a milk carton and move toward empty cans and toy figurines as your aim improves. Play on your own from the comfort of your deck or alternate throws with a partner to see who can knock the target over first. Forest Labyrinth Locate a stand of trees with little undergrowth and string a continuous line of ropes which zig, twist and zag between the trees. Set your blindfolded partner up at one end of the rope to discover and navigate the route by hand. Add sound features to the route by tying a bell and windchimes to the rope along the way. Golf Course Living Ever dreamt of living in a home that backs onto a golf course, here’s how to make this dream a reality! Gather empty laundry baskets, old tires and clean waste baskets. Mark the ‘tee area’ with a rope or stick and place the basket 100-200 feet away. Set the tee for the next hole nearby and zig zag back and forth utilizing interesting landscape features to add challenge to your course. Hansel and Gretel Trail Leave a trail of clues through the forest for your partner to follow. What will your secret trail look like? For younger children try large stick arrows pointing the way. More challenging routes migh feature dried grass tied visibly to tree branches or placing cones in a unique way on stumps and downed trees. Log Driver’s Waltz In a patch of windblown trees (aspen work great!) which form balance beams crisscrossing one another, pick out a landmark across the clearing. Channel your inner log driver and use fancy footwork to get there. The ground is obviously lava! Nurse Log Garden Tour Fallen trees are a life-giving force on the forest floor. Often hidden under blankets of moss and groundcover, the decomposing logs provide seedlings with rich nutrients for growth. Slowly walk through the forest and search for these vertical gardens. Tie colourful yarn onto your favourite nurse logs to share them with friends or revisit later in the season. Skipping Stones The satisfaction of finding and skipping the perfect stone is at treat for the soul. Up your spin speed game and try to release the stone parallel to the water for maximum skips. Shiver Thee Timbers Who’s home? Lay a white sheet or garbage bag on the ground under a tree you are curious about. Give the tree a vigorous shake and see what creatures come tumbling out. Use a magnifying glass to get to meet the tree dwellers up close. Shopping for Tea Head out on a nature walk with your field guide and ‘grocery basket’ and harvest edible native plants such as Labrador tea, rosehips, and peppermint. Remember to leave some of the plant and berries intact for forest friends. Wash your ‘produce’ before setting it out to dry. Name your tea after the sites they were harvested from, such as Portage Trail Peppermint Blend.
