At a Glance Our goal is to develop basic knowledge and technologies that allow to foresee and to mitigate the impacts caused by mining activity, during operation and after mine closure, on aquatic systems. We base our work on knowledge-based predictive models of the behavior of technological and natural systems determining the degree of sustainability of the mining industry. These include hydrological systems serving as water sources, physical-chemical mechanisms governing mass and energy changes in environmental systems, and the design and optimal operation of water-intensive engineering systems. 26

Develop knowledge and technology to empower the processes of geological modeling and characterization of mineral deposits and to improve the assessment of the associated geo-hazards, optimizing the entire mining value chain from exploration through exploitation and processing to remediation.

Create new methodologies for mine planning and design that improve operational results, based on the integration of models for geological and geometallurgical resource assessment, material handling technologies, hydrology, environment and process performance.

To develop robust models and applications linking mineral characterization with mineral behavior in metallurgical processes, to integrate geology, mining and metallurgy as a tool to optimize the mine plan and design, given key constraints such as environmental restrictions, water availability and energy efficiency.

To produce methods and tools to integrate in an efficient manner geotechnical, geo-mechanics, design, operational and constructability considerations into the mine planning process for selective underground mining.

Future Automated Mine Operation

To improve the understanding of the fundamentals of the planning and operation of block caves mines in the areas of mine development, caving geo-mechanics and equipment and to develop tools and technology to support this type of operations.

To develop the fundamental knowledge of In Situ Mining Method by integrating mining, metallurgical, environmental and hydrodynamic disciplines. The method corresponds to a combination of sublevel stopping and In Situ Leaching technics.

During the last three years, the AMTC has placed high emphasis on its Outreach activites promoting the science and the scientific advances of the Center within the chilean society with special focus on the sector of education. From 2015 to 2017 the AMTC was part of 185 outreach activities, either as organizer, producer, collaborator or guest, and made nearly 100 appearances in mass media, directly reaching more than 500,000 people spanning several target audiences. 36

Technology Assets 2015-2017 Software DSim Delphos DSim is a simulator of transport systems for open-pit and underground mines. Software DOPPLER

It allows the automation of LHD or dump trucks. It is able to operate in either block caving or sub-level stopping mines, increasing the operators’ safety. The software is the result of the cooperation between AMTC and the German OEM GHH Fahrzeuge.

Open-pit mining planning software focused on assisting the planner in making decisions aimed at maximizing the value of the business. The software allows for traditional strategic planning through economics calculation and obtaining mining plans; but also by scheduling blocks directly over time.

Geostatistical Modeling Library This software is a tool for assessing geological uncertainty, through stochastic simulation of variables measured on continuous quantitative scales, such as metal grades, and categorical scales, such as rock types. “Congratulations for this excellent scientific product with direct applications in a real case. Software U-FO This software aims at solving the problem of geological resource assessment over a deposit affected by a complex geometry, due to the presence of faults, veins and folds produced after the mineralization occurred. This method allowed our partner Yamana Gold to add USD 15.5 million to their initial resources assessment in 2015. “Thanks to U-Fo we could visualize a mining project that was initially declared as unprofitable after a reserve assessment done with conventional methods.
