FROM THE CLUBHOUSE the best of the season with us. Real estate has been very active throughout 2021. We closed on over 30 club-owned lots and have contracts to close on an additional 50 over the next few years. However, labor and construction lead times remain the two biggest challenges and areas of opportunity for Berkeley Hall.

As we near the close of 2021, I’d like to reflect on the year we had as we turn our focus to 2022. From a COVID standpoint, it was not exactly the return to norm we had hoped for, but as a Club we were able to progress in many ways for what was indeed a very exciting year. Starting with the vote to move forward with Phase 1 in January and beginning of construction in April, we’ve certainly seen a great deal of activity. In September, we had tremendous success hosting the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship and showcasing Berkeley Hall on the world stage, and we followed that up with a great party to celebrate 20 years on the North Course! In 2022, we look forward to having another great party to open up the new Veranda and renovated Mixed Grille, ushering in a new era that celebrates our club lifestyle. This season, we look forward to many of our well-loved member traditions, with a full weekend of Thanksgiving events kicked off by our annual Lowcountry Oyster Roast, Thanksgiving Dinner and Annual Tree Lighting and I look forward to seeing everyone celebrating 2


Like the rest of the country, labor in the Lowcountry continues to be a real struggle. Our team has been creative with scheduling and utilizing team members to cover shifts and share workloads within Club departments. Due to various factors, wages throughout the nation have increased at a rate we’ve never seen before. As we look to 2022, we are determining what will make Berkeley Hall competitive in the labor market and how we can best elevate the member experience during these challenging times. I would really like to thank our Berkeley Hall team for all their flexibility and hard work! Labor and demand have also impacted the ability to build homes as quickly as we’d like to see. Berkeley Hall currently has over 50 homes in construction or in the ARB process, but the length of time it takes architects to complete plans, the county to provide permits, and construction to be completed, is up to 20% longer than in 2019. We are very excited about all the new members we welcomed this year. Demand remains very strong for prospective members, and with so many exciting things to look forward to, 2022 promises to be a great year at Berkeley Hall!

Member generosity runs deep, with our annual Food Drive to help Bluffton Self Help with Thanksgiving items such as gravy and broth, cream soups, canned peas, canned carrots, canned yams, (no green beans, please!) canned tomatoes and canned fruit, canned and boxed potatoes, stuffing, rice and pasta sides, creamed soups, bread, cornbread, cake, cookie and brownie mixes, pie crust mix and fillings, disposable cake pans and roasting pans, canned fruit and roasting pans. VINCENT MATALAVAGE APPOINTED CATERING AND EVENTS MANAGER Vincent (Vinny) Matalavage has been appointed Catering & Events Manager for Berkeley Hall Club. Vinny has served in a management role at the Club since 2020, formerly holding the position of Assistant Food & Beverage Manager. He brings extensive experience in event planning from social functions to corporate 4


and banquet events at large venues across the country. Prior to joining Berkeley Hall Club, he served as Banquet Manager at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa. Before relocating to the Lowcountry, Vinny served as Catering Supervisor at the Bryce Jordan Center Arena at Penn State University. Vinny holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Penn State University, located in State College, PA. We wish him great success in his new position.

It was an incredible honor for the Club to serve as host for the prestigious USGA event in September, highly celebrated by the players, officials and our membership. The U.S. Women’s Mid Am Champion Blakesly Brock from Tennessee triumphed in a thrilling final that ended a great

week for both Berkeley Hall, and for Blakesly. We look forward to our many exciting member events in November and December, highlighted by the HAIG, the Women’s Invitational and the Club Challenge. And we always look forward to seeing our members that may have been away for the summer months. The Fall/Winter season here at Berkeley Hall is a lot of fun, and

NORTH SOUTH RECAP We had another well-supported NorthSouth Challenge in early October. The two teams battled it out on the North Course, as the North Team looked to defend their title from 2020. As is usually the case in this event, the final scores were

The weather was fabulous for all three days, and the competition was close in all of the flights. The nine flight winners moved on to the Championship shootout, and it was the pair of Willie Wang and John Petersen that came out victorious. Congratulations to Willie and his guest John!

Our recently updated Strategic Plan allows for time to refine the re-grassing plan for the North Course, aggressively work the soil, and develop a plan for the native areas to create a “wow” factor when we renovate.

Since joining Berkeley Hall this past Spring, one of my top priorities has been assessing both golf courses and the Golf and Greens portion of the Berkeley Hall Strategic Plan. Our focus has been on improving the playability of both courses while meeting overall agronomic challenges. After four months of evaluations, the Agronomy team recommended a series of adjustments to the Strategic Plan, the Golf and Greens Committee concurred, and the Berkeley Hall Board of Directors approved the changes at the September board meeting. NORTH COURSE RE-GRASSING IN 2023 The Strategic Plan now incorporates scheduling of the North Course 20

Sleep, sometimes considered more of a luxury than an important health factor, is actually a vital cornerstone of good health. Without it, the body can’t do its natural repair and regeneration cycle each night. In fact, an earlier CDC report refers to “insufficient sleep as a public health problem.” It’s recommended that adults and young adults (age 18-25) sleep 7-9 hours for optimum rest. No more than 10 hours is suggested for adults, and no more than 11 for young adults. Adults 65+ should receive 7-8 hours, no less than 5 or no more than 9, according to the National Sleep Foundation.
