Lowcountry Oyster Roast & wine tasting Thanksgiving Feast Grand Tree Lighting

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE the best of the season with us. Real estate has been very active throughout 2021. We closed on over 30 club-owned lots and have contracts to close on an additional 50 over the next few years. However, labor and construction lead times remain the two biggest challenges and areas of opportunity for Berkeley Hall.

As we near the close of 2021, I’d like to reflect on the year we had as we turn our focus to 2022. From a COVID standpoint, it was not exactly the return to norm we had hoped for, but as a Club we were able to progress in many ways for what was indeed a very exciting year. Starting with the vote to move forward with Phase 1 in January and beginning of construction in April, we’ve certainly seen a great deal of activity. In September, we had tremendous success hosting the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship and showcasing Berkeley Hall on the world stage, and we followed that up with a great party to celebrate 20 years on the North Course! In 2022, we look forward to having another great party to open up the new Veranda and renovated Mixed Grille, ushering in a new era that celebrates our club lifestyle. This season, we look forward to many of our well-loved member traditions, with a full weekend of Thanksgiving events kicked off by our annual Lowcountry Oyster Roast, Thanksgiving Dinner and Annual Tree Lighting and I look forward to seeing everyone celebrating 2

Like the rest of the country, labor in the Lowcountry continues to be a real struggle. Our team has been creative with scheduling and utilizing team members to cover shifts and share workloads within Club departments. Due to various factors, wages throughout the nation have increased at a rate we’ve never seen before. As we look to 2022, we are determining what will make Berkeley Hall competitive in the labor market and how we can best elevate the member experience during these challenging times. I would really like to thank our Berkeley Hall team for all their flexibility and hard work! Labor and demand have also impacted the ability to build homes as quickly as we’d like to see. Berkeley Hall currently has over 50 homes in construction or in the ARB process, but the length of time it takes architects to complete plans, the county to provide permits, and construction to be completed, is up to 20% longer than in 2019. We are very excited about all the new members we welcomed this year. Demand remains very strong for prospective members, and with so many exciting things to look forward to, 2022 promises to be a great year at Berkeley Hall!

WITH KRISTA DUNTON Nov 10-12 | Dec 8-10 | Jan 7-9 | Feb 11-13 | Mar 3-5 | $1,750/pp Non-Member | $1,550/pp Member Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton brings a level of excitement to Berkeley Hall Golf Academy that’s unparalleled.

Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technology at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individualize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because

everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.” Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best. “We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”

We want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual. I believe everyone has their own unique swing DNA. We work with what you have, and enhance that and make it better.

GOLF ACADEMY

DAY 1

We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going to go to. DAY 2

The process of getting your game on the course. How to think correctly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure. DAY 3

How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently. “We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learning Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories – so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”

GOLF MAINTENANCE UPDATE

A

ON THE GREENS: CREATING THE "WOW" FACTOR

s we look toward to 2022, our goal is to create the best playing experience for as much of the year as possible while also limiting course closure times. Our recently updated Strategic Plan allows for time to refine the re-grassing plan for the North Course, aggressively work the soil, and develop a plan for the native areas to create a “wow” factor when we renovate.

re-grassing in 2023. This was not an easy decision, but we believe the benefits far outweigh the risks. One very important aspect of the conclusion is our commitment to overseed the North Course in both 2021 and 2022. This should provide better/ dryer playing conditions than the membership has experienced in the past during winter months. Below are some of the factors considered:

I’d like to recognize our Agronomy team’s incredible efforts to prepare the North Course for the fall U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. Showcased in national media, as well as internationally, the North Course was the premier backdrop for the USGA tournament, and we could not have been more proud.

Provides the opportunity to apply ample amounts of sand on the North Course so sand-capping is not required, more consistent playing conditions from the fairways and the rough, and possibility of shorter

Since joining Berkeley Hall this past Spring, one of my top priorities has been assessing both golf courses and the Golf and Greens portion of the Berkeley Hall Strategic Plan. Our focus has been on improving the playability of both courses while meeting overall agronomic challenges. After four months of evaluations, the Agronomy team recommended a series of adjustments to the Strategic Plan, the Golf and Greens Committee concurred, and the Berkeley Hall Board of Directors approved the changes at the September board meeting. BENEFITS:

improve drainage and playability. Provides the new GCM team with an additional year to evaluate and assess the entire golf course and ensures membership gets the best product possible after the re-grassing. RISKS: The Tift-Sport does not transition after overseeding and playing conditions are not optimal during the summer (June/July/August), and we are forced to sod some areas of the golf course. For 2022, the focus will be continuing to aggressively work the soil with sand channeling, aeration,

Provides time to continue work on drainage in the rough and around tees on both courses. Allows an additional year to focus on returning the South Course greens to proper health. Protects South Course re-grassing investment and allows for proper aerification of South Course in 2022. Allows GCM team to continue to aggressively aerify the rough on the South Course and the fairways and rough on the North Course to

and top dressing. The Fazio putting green will be doubled in size to provide members with more room to practice and create more level putting surfaces for practice. Additionally, the plan is to renovate the warm-up side’s short-game area and create more usable space for pitching/chipping and bunker warm-up. As stated above, our goal is to create the best playing experience for our membership throughout the year, as we continue to enhance the overall integrity on both courses.

HAPPY DREAMS! Good Sleep = Good Health When it comes to a healthy, active lifestyle, many of us overlook the importance of sleep, and it’s one of the first things to go when people feel pressed for time. Sleep, sometimes considered more of a luxury than an important health factor, is actually a vital cornerstone of good health. Without it, the body can’t do its natural repair and regeneration cycle each night. In fact, an earlier CDC report refers to “insufficient sleep as a public health problem.” It’s recommended that adults and young adults (age 18-25) sleep 7-9 hours for optimum rest. No more than 10 hours is suggested for adults, and no more than 11 for young adults. Adults 65+ should receive 7-8 hours, no less than 5 or no more than 9, according to the National Sleep Foundation. So, say “Yes” to exercise, a healthy diet, a consistent sleep routine – and even a good nap!

Say “Yes” to exercise, a healthy diet, a consistent sleep routine – and even a good nap! – Michele Greth, Spa & Fitness Director

GOOD SLEEP BENEFITS • Improved Concentration & Productivity • Stronger Immune System • Better Athletic Performance

POOR SLEEP RISKS • Higher Body Weight (tendency to eat more calories) • Greater Risk of Heart Disease & Stroke • Affects Glucose Metabolism, increasing risk for Type 2 Diabetes

Poor sleep can affect emotions and social interaction. It has also been linked to increased inflammation, as well as depression. If you haven’t given much thought to how you’re sleeping, take some time to consider your sleep patterns and make sure you take the right steps to ensure you’re getting enough! The power of good sleep cannot be overstated – in addition to a healthy diet and active lifestyle, sleep is the foundation to good health and should be an important part of your overall health plan.

Good Diet = Healthy You Look great and feel great – We can help with that! With our knowledgeable staff of fitness trainers and in-house nutritional counseling, we’ve got you covered!

We’ve all heard the same things, try this new diet to lose a fast 10 pounds or more…Fad diets may seem like an easy way to get your desired results, but they can actually hurt you in the long run. FADS TO AVOID: Meal Replacement, these quick-fix plans usually feature bars and shakes, and are generally full of highly processed unhealthy ingredients and artificial sweeteners. CALORIE RESTRICTION: It’s tempting to cut calories but creating a calorie deficit sets you up for failure. Your body needs calories to fuel it, from your beating heart to filtering done by your kidneys. You may lose weight short-term, but it’s detrimental in the long run. Your energy and endurance plummet and your body will use lean body mass (muscle) for energy instead of the intended fat.

Fad diets may seem like an easy way to get your desired results, but they can actually hurt you in the long run. – Jodie Folk, Nutritionist & Fitness Trainer LOW/NO-CARB DIET: Low or no-carb diets have been popular since the 80’s. The draw is rapid “weight” loss. But by eliminating carbs you lose out on key nutrients found in whole grains, fruits and legumes. This can also cause serious complications such as heart arrhythmias, osteoporosis, and kidney damage, and the increased amounts of protein and fat intake from animal sources may increase risk for cancer and heart disease. FOCUS ON THE WHOLE: By eating whole, unprocessed foods, nutrients are more bioavailable and readily used by our bodies. Whole foods include fresh fruits, nuts and berries, avocados, leafy green vegetables, sweet potatoes, eggs, fish, and natural whole grains.

SMART CALORIES: Fuel your body and keep yourself healthy and working at optimum levels. Forget about starving yourself - eat a balanced diet and create a bigger calorie deficit by increasing physical activity. Try some new recipes that feature fresh ingredients, new spices, lots of veggies and other lean proteins. We love adding fresh ginger to meals, even smoothies, to mix up your flavor profiles. BALANCE, CREATIVITY & GOOD FLAVOR: With so many great and healthy good options, it’s easy to enjoy yourself and all the foods and flavors you love! From eat-right recipes to good, informational nutrition tips and meal planning, we’re happy to help!
