new year is here and it is time to start the year off right. While some people make the same old New Year’s resolutions, others challenge themselves to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. With a fresh new year comes a fresh new look! This issue welcomes new sections, a couple of new writers and a new graphic design crew to the team. My favorite new section is Newsworthy which has all the latest information about students, past events, and what’s new and upcoming on campus. Tom Nastos Interview by Raquel Rivera As stated on the “Fashion ENK International | Coterie ’13” post, I had the amazing opportunity to interview the president of ENK International Tom Nastos. During the interview Tom stated key facts that I believe every student should apply to their future.

Not only did Tom give us great advice on ways we can become successful in the fashion industry, but he also gave us insight on how the digital world is revolutionizing the business. ENK introduced a new feature that has been added to the ENK International Trade Show known as “Shop the Floor”.

Question: What steps did you take to get to where you are today? Tom: I had a game plan from the beginning. I think for most people it’s great to have dreams but for a lot of people you don’t know what’s ahead of you and it’s hard to imagine where you could go. I always put a three year program together, I say I’m here today and in 36 months I could imagine myself to be in this particular place in my career. I follow through on it and the obvious is hard work. Question: What advice would you give the student fresh out of college trying to find a job in the fashion industry? Tom: I think you have to look very carefully at yourself and what your skill set is and say “I’m very good at this”. Maybe that youngster would really be interested in working in e-commerce, e-commerce a lot of money is going into it and fashion is embracing e-commerce. So the question is “What’s my skill set?”

The ABCs Winter Trend Guide by Shauna Farrell

Winter 2014 promises to be full of glamour, luxe, and unseasonable colors. With these trends, you will forget how bitter it is outside as you slip into the season’s hottest trends. Here is the alphabetical guide you will need to update your wardrobe.

nimal prints. What can be more fun than a pair of leopard print harem pants with a chunky sweater? If you are not ready to take on the harem pants style, a chic leopard tote will be an excellent accessory to break up dark outfits.

legance. From lace pieces to soft pinks and off whites, winter is looking a little like spring. Take on this trend by pairing lacy, pink tights with a darker dress. Blush colored heels are another way to take advantage of this trend on cold days.

oats. Coats were a main focus for Winter 2014. Trends like color blocking and adornments have added a special element to your traditional peacoat. Different cuts and styles have turned coats into fashionable pieces this season.

resses.Take you favorite summer dress and add a blazer to it, with tights and a pair of tall boots. By mixing and matching, you can transform any summer dress into a go to winter outfit.

loral. We can see floral prints in jeans, sweaters, and dresses. Take a pair of floral skinnies and a classic sweater. Remember, balance with solid pieces to avoid taking away from the trend.

ray. Gray is the new black. From gray sweaters to gray jeans, there are many ways to take on this trend. For the rocker, a gray pair of zip ankle skinnies and a black bomber jacket will be your go to outfit. 6

arem pants. I was on the fence with this trend, but a great pair of harem pants with a chunky sweater or denim jacket can look chic. These pants look best with a classic heel. Oversized necklaces and rings add a fun element to any outfit.

Leather leggings, skirts, and dresses can be easily dressed for the winter. Leather sweatshirts look great with jeans and chic heeled boots.

ueen Me! Overly jeweled headbands that look like mini crowns are the best hair accessory this year. When wearing this headband, keep your clothes simple, making the headband your focal piece.

ellingtons. Rain boots. These are the best for winter conditions.There are many variations of these boots as well as colors and prints. Bonus tip: Pair with thick socks as these sometimes do not keep your feet warm.

Beach Waves by Alyssa Parisi It’s hard to maintain unruly hair during snow and wind conditions, especially when you have a great outfit and your hair is lacking in the “fabulousity” department. Beach waves aren’t just for the summer. Spraying sea salt in wet hair will leave your hair looking effortless and perfectly tousled in the winter. Also, the wet snow won’t ruin your hairstyle, but it will help maintain the look all day.

Beirut is often referred to as “the Paris of the Middle East,” due that some of the most spectacular fashion designers emerge from this area. This includes Lebanese fashion designer Elie Saab, a master of sophistication, whose fairytale creations have been worn by celebrities and royalty alike. The self-taught fashion genius, dazzles with his intricate beading and strong sense of beauty. His specialty is the ultimate dress that highlights a woman’s silhouette with delicate embroideries and his outstanding quality. Elie Saab was born on July 4th 1964 in Beirut to a wood merchant and a housewife. He was the eldest of five children and at the early age of nine realized his love for fashion and started making dresses for his younger sisters. As a child he spent much of his much of his free time cutting patterns and drawing sketches for them, using his mother’s tablecloths and curtains for fabrics. By the time he became a teenager, he was an established force in his neighborhood, creating fashions for a small network of loyal clients. In a recent interview Mr. Saab said “I was born with this passion of creating and making dresses and was always surrounded by beautiful women, from sisters to my neighbors, so the desire to dress them and make them look elegant was my constant inspiration.”

When he turned 18, he opened up his own couture atelier in Beirut with over a dozen employees. By this time he was already a master dress maker and presented his first collection to a public. He was instantly rewarded with huge success and “rapidly transcended Beirut’s borders, attracting women from

high society” according to Eliesaab.com. However, what really made him a worldwide sensation was the dress worn by Halle Berry to the 2002 Oscars. She was nominated and won the best actress award and the next day her picture in her Elie Saab’s dress was posted everywhere. From that day on, Elie Saab became a worldwide phenomenon. 9

Fast forward to eleven years later and he is a definite favorite amongst A-list celebrities. Vogue writes “ Sequins, shimmer, shine and crystals are very much the mainstay of this designer’s creations and there is only ever one destination in mind for his gowns – the red carpet”. He has dressed everyone from Angelina Jolie, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Gwyneth Paltrow, to name a few. Women adore him because has the ability to take simple designs and embellish them in such a way that it magnifies their femininity and elegance. Fashion is who he is and even with all the success that he has attained, he is not planning on slowing down anytime soon. The only thing that is certain is that the future is bright for this amazing designer. Elie Saab sums up that, “Elegance is a statement, an attitude. Elegant women are women of character with confidence.”

The Winter is Here... by Shane Osinloye It’s freezing outside!

Take it from a New Yorker. Get a very warm jacket. Hoping that you heard ole Ned Stark’s voice saying “The winter is coming” in a bone chilling Shane Osinloye moment of Game of Thrones, you will realize, “Hey, those northerners know a whole bunch of stuff about the north, being from the north and all, I guess...”. From our basic human need to stay warm, to our most superficially gorgeous senses of style, being from Gotham City is a definite advantage. I could write a thesis on this one subject alone. I plan on at least beginning a column here. We, as New Yorkers, from the port city of Lady Liberty, have a responsibility to share the inherent fashion expertise we a born with asYankees. The first question one would ask is, “How does being a New Yorker give you ‘inherent’ fashion expertise?” There are various answers, from superficial to statistical. Let’s start with the superficial and work our way up. I am one of the 44% of

African American men pursuing a higher education, while growing up in a household earning over the median income of $75,000. Looking in my closet, I definitely spend the 300 percent more in higher end retail grocers more than any other high-income household by race according to the Huffington Post article “Report Finds Black Buying Power To Reach $1.1 Trillion.”

Boy did I learn how to spend! Coming from the hip-hop culture is a lifestyle submerged in the consumer experience. Coming from nothing to something has a way of making you want to get everything you never had. Not to mention, New York’s population density. I came from a high school class of nearly a thousand people, if not over. It was a fashion show. The newest Jordans, until we learned luxury brand’s sneakers are around the same price point, the latest jeans, the flyest coats. It’s where I developed my style, 10

from my fitted fit, to the cuts and designs of my favorite brands. What can I say? I like high fashion. Some of my spending comes from my diversity. I was born in New York, my mother in London, and her mother from Barbados before her, who met my grandfather as they attended Oxford together. Mom comes here, and educates her son on brands like Burberry, and Louis Vuitton, my favorites. Mom would take me on shopping expeditions, show me how to dress myself, and pick up a few items along the way as well. She looked perfect in a Burberry trench. I immediately aspired to be successful, so I could get her the finer things she appreciates. No wonder I appreciate the leadership of a powerful woman such as Burberry’s soon to be former CEO, Angela Ahrendts, who will lead Apple to the excellent horizontal growth and high value innovation she’s brought to Burberry since 2006. Another insider tip: high fashion does not necessarily mean high prices without high quality. My Damier belt from LV was replaced three times since I first purchased it in 2009 at absolutely no cost to me. Louis Vuitton has pride in their product line, and if there merchandise breaks, they are more

than willing to show you they stand behind their product by taking responsibility and replacing it. Learn from your experiences, and remember and share the good consumer experiences you have! I’ve had similar experiences and Frye, where I wore down my boots to the leather on the right boot. For $15 USD, they took my boots in, replaced the worn down parts, and refurbished the rest of the boot. They were already amazing, and in two weeks, after one express delivery from the Keebler elves, they were amazing and brand spanking new. Polished even! Aside from my much more robust career in consumer marketing and production, I formerly managed a Lacoste, managed sales at an Express Fashion, and worked at a Burberry and Bath & Body Works.

This brings all the trivial elements of my personal life to a career of building consumer relationships directly related to the fashion industry. We live in a temperate deciduous forest, meaning it experiences four season, meaning four seasons of fashion, an industry already volatile with the whims of its rising and falling trends. That is accompanied with keeping up with the scents of the season, accessorizing, and matching outfits to the various dimensions of a New York City lifestyle. New York itself is at the helm of fashion capitals of the world. The most significant conclusion of all of these observations, and the experiences which accompany them, is I am not unique! I am one of 8.34 Million New Yorkers, with our wild and diverse histories,

work experiences, and fashion expertise. The land of the hipsters, pop up shops, and snow laden loft parties. Speaking of, it’s going to be cold. I know this. We had no hurricanes, I feel the air is off, and freezing winds will sweep in from Canada and overtake our land. We will have mild days, and bone chilling cold. This is where I need your help! I want your suggestions, your recommendations, for topics and for tips on how to survive in our urban terrain comfortably, and at the peak of fashion. Excerpted from Black Enterprise article, “African-American’s Buying Power Projected to be $1.1 Trillion By 2015” There are 43 million African Americans in the United States, 13.7 percent of the total population, the second largest racial minority in the country. The median age is 32 and 47 percent are under 35 years of age. Even with these impressive numbers and buying power most mainstream advertisers are not inclusive, do not include African Americans in media and marketing plans and have underestimated the market size. The Nielsen Company study entitled “African-American Consumers:

Still Vital, Still Growing,” which was commissioned by the National Newspaper Publishers Association, shows the underrepresented potential and spending power of the African American community. According to the study: between 2000 and 2009, the number of African Americans attending some college or earning degrees has grown: 45 percent of men; 54 percent of women. Households earning $75,000 or more grew by more than 60 percent, faster than the rest of the population. African American’s average income nationwide is $47,290.

So what does this all mean in business terms? It means African Americans wield tremendous buying power. The Nielsen study showed numerous shopping trends, mostly for household, health and beauty, travel, smart phones and child related items. “The Nielsen report is very encouraging because it shows the African American population is a tremendous financial asset to this country’s economic recovery,” says Calvin Harris, Jr. , President & CEO of the National Association of Black Accountants.

1) When did you know you wanted to work in fashion?

I never intended to work in fashion. My original plans were to go to law school. I worked at Saks Fifth Avenue during my college years and entered their executive training program after graduation. The rest is history. I became a buyer and never left the field.

2) What was your favorite industry job?

My favorite industry job was being in charge of the Saks Fifth Avenue Folio Division which was their mail order catalog division. I enjoyed the challenge of managing many departments and turning around the division to profitability.

3) Is there a mantra that you live by?

My mantra is to appreciate and value family, do the best job possible and enjoy life because one never knows when it will end.

4) What’s your favorite course to teach at Berkeley?

My favorite course is FAS245--Merchandise Planning and Buying. I was a buyer and merchandise manager, so I realize the importance of retail mathematics to profit. I feel it is important for any fashion student to learn and understand the relationships between cost and retail and P&L statements.

5) What fashion item can you not live without?

The fashion item I cannot live without is a watch. I love watches and own many and never leave home without one on my wrist. Mark Friedberg is currently the Berkeley College Fashion Club adviser.
