essex HOMES

We are pleased to welcome you to the latest edition of Essex Homes and Style. This magazine is unique to Beresfords and features not just the finest properties Essex has to offer but also an eclectic range of lifestyle features including supercars from Aston Martin and Pagani and fashion from Gucci. 2016 gave us some surprises with voting in both the Brexit referendum and the US Presidential election going against expectations and 2017 has continued in the same vein with our General Election providing a far different result to that predicted. As is usual, events of this nature will have an effect on the financial markets and also the property industry but as we have seen, once over the initial shock, the market tends to continue and that is certainly what seems to have happened this summer. It is traditional the market tends to ease slightly due to the peak holiday season and whilst this has been the case, we have now seen considerable activity since we have entered September. That’s not to say that there aren’t still some challenges in the marketplace but it does seem to suit estate agents who actively try to sell property as opposed to just putting them online and expecting buyers to simply turn up. As always, we are striving to be at the top of our game and were pleased to see the Group agreeing sales of over £980m worth of property over the last year with nearly 3,000 properties sold or let. Completely redesigning our already highly successful website and introducing more innovation has also proved worthwhile. We were very aware that recent figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that 70% of adults now had access to the internet “on the go”, nearly double what it was in 2011. That’s why the Beresfords website is now fully responsive and can be viewed on all devices from PCs to tablets and from smart phones to laptops. The result is that in the first half of 2017 total website visitors were up over 12%, unique visitors by over 14%, session duration up 14% and pages viewed increased by a massive 40% compared to the same period in 2016. By the way, did you know that our website is also one of the best property information platforms out there (and we include the major portals in that) so feel free to use it as a resource tool! With around 60% of people moving to a different part of Essex, you will find professionally voiced over videos for each of our areas along with other vital information on commute times, season ticket prices etc. In addition, every one of our properties has a “schools checker” facility which includes OFSTED report ratings. Also, many people find our “real time rate checker” provides up to the minute mortgage rates from all the lenders, as our independent financial services division, Flagstone, has whole of market data and gives fully independent advice. So if you can’t see your dream home in Essex Homes & Style, you can see many more on our website. In the meantime, if you need any help in your moving plans such as an initial guide to your property value, an idea on mortgage repayments or if you are first time buyer or tenant that just need to have a friendly chat to find out what’s involved, call us, email or just pop into to your local branch. We are always happy to help and give advice which will be fully independent and in confidence, as so many people now ask us to discreetly assist in their move which can be a very successful way of achieving their new home. Please enjoy the magazine.

Beresfords in the Community

Each year we sell and let thousands of properties across the region, so we certainly understand that home is where the heart is. Over the years we’ve developed our support to the communities we serve and in the past 12 months alone our teams have taken part in mud races, charity runs, village fetes and events as well as our inaugural charity ball that raised over £14,000 for the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance.

Here’s a look at the highlights:

An inaugural ball Over 150 people enjoyed a night of fun and sophistication for the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance at our inaugural charity gala ball on 21 October 2016. Sponsored by Lancaster and in partnership with Essex Life, guests were treated to a gala dinner and charity auction hosted by BBC Look East and ‘Inside Out’ TV presenter, David Whitely. Attendees had the chance to bid for a range of high profile prizes, such as a ‘money can’t buy’ guided tour of the Bentley car factory, a Maserati for the weekend, a private chef cooking experience, a fabulous five star holiday in Greece and many other items.

Paul Beresford, Chairman/Managing Director of Beresfords Group, was delighted. He says: “Beresfords is committed to supporting its local communities and by raising much-needed funds for an organisation that is there for us all, and our loved ones, it is the ideal partnership.”

The ball raised a staggering £14,000 for the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance. Thanks to the success of this ball we have organised the next gala ball for the 13th October at the stunning Braxted Park estate, and will yet again be looking to top last year’s fundraiser in the continued support of Essex and Herts Air Ambulance. 26 | Essex Homes & Style

Christmas in Essex Christmas is a great time for everyone to join in the festive spirit and raise funds for good causes. Last Christmas we were very busy with our support of the Salvation Army, Save the Children and Age UK.

Staff loved donning their best Christmas jumper for Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day, we also served meals to the homeless in partnership with the Salvation Army and rolled-up our sleeves packing bags in Marks and Spencer on behalf of Age UK.

We’re also keen to bring a little ‘Beresfords’ magic’ to community events and supported the Ingatestone Victorian Evening and again found ourselves dressing-up, this time in Victorian costume! We also had a great time at the Witham Dickensian Market with a professional face painter and it was wonderful to see the excitement on the children’s faces. Out and about in the region The Maldon branch jumped at the chance at taking on the world-famous Maldon Mud Race and raised an impressive £230 for Action for Family Carers. Not to be outdone the Brentwood branch took on the Brentwood Nuclear Race as the ‘B52’s’ and raised an outstanding £1,100 for The British Heart Foundation. As well as taking part in fundraisers we’ve also supported community events from The Essex Young Farmers to the Witham carnival. We love being part of your community and will continue to help create better futures for all.

Acknowledging the Best of the Best The phrases ‘People do business with people’ and ‘We are a people business’ are often used but they are especially true in our industry where we are handling the most valuable asset the vast majority of us have, our property. That requires clients to have trust in us but that trust has to be earned, it doesn’t just happen.

They have to be comfortable about the company they are dealing with but more importantly, they have to be comfortable with the ethical and professional credentials of the individuals they will be dealing with day to day.

At Beresfords we have established a reputation within our industry for having some of the most talented people in the business. Our staff turnover is exceptionally low and we genuinely believe we have the best people working with us.

Again though, that doesn’t just happen. We take great care in our recruitment process to ensure people share our ethos. And once they are on board we do everything we can to allow them fulfil their potential including regular training and mentoring.

One thing is for sure, they have to step up to plate when it comes to our standards. We always explain that we are fortunate enough to get a huge level of repeat business, not surprising since we were established in 1968, and also from recommendation and as such our clients expect, and deserve, outstanding service. But it’s not all about work. We pride ourselves in making sure there are plenty of opportunities for our people to let their hair down and socialise with their colleagues. That can be going tenpin bowling, a quiz night or teaming up with others to have fun and raise money for charity including events such as the Brentwood Nuclear Races or the Maldon Mud Race (although those that took part in the latter would probably dispute the use of the word ‘fun’!), abseiling down buildings and much much more.

After all, as Beresfords was established nearly 50 years ago and our people all live locally. The local community is our community and we do all we can to support it from helping the Salvation Army during the winter to sponsoring school

fetes and town carnivals in the summer.

There is one stand out occasion in the ‘Beresfords Year’ that is the first to go into everyone’s diaries, our annual Awards Evening and Summer Ball.

The awards recognised the outstanding levels of achievement and dedication shown in fulfilling the needs of our clients, and naturally we want to show how much we appreciate them and respect their contribution. This year we celebrated outstanding results and resilience despite a challenging marketplace as we welcomed over 180 of our people from across our entire network of branches throughout Essex and into Greater London.

A total number of 28 awards were given out on the night, with employees winning individual coveted awards including Best Customer Service, Best Newcomer and Employee of the Year with teams being rewarded for their commitment to the cause including Best Sales Office and Best Lettings Office, together with recognition of those in supporting roles.

Following the Awards, the Summer Party, with this year’s Arabian Nights theme, got into full swing as guests enjoyed a fabulous drinks reception and sumptuous three course meal and entertainment before the dancing into the small hours began.

Great Customer Service? Don’t Just Take Our Word For It.

There’s nothing more rewarding than someone saying ‘Thank You’ or ‘Well Done’ when all you have done is your job. We really do try to go that bit further when it comes to helping people move. For example one of our branches were selling a property for an elderly couple that hadn’t moved for a very long while.

On completion day we had a frantic ‘phone call from them saying their solicitor had been in touch and there were issues with the property they were buying which meant they would not be able to move into it that day.

We called the buyer but he and his family and the removal lorry were on their way and their buyers were moving in so they couldn’t turn back. However they did say would be prepared to let sellers move all their furniture into one part of the house. Whilst the sellers were grateful they had no idea how they could move the furniture at their age and they had no relatives in the area. The next thing they knew our team were at the door ready to move all their belongings for them, the buyers moved in and the sellers spent the night at a local hotel.

It doesn’t happen often but when moving home is one the most stressful life events we have to cope and you need people in the background that will do their best to ease the load and make the move happen.

That’s why one of the most important accolades at our awards night is for Best Customer Service although we have to admit that there always so many good candidates that it is the most difficult category to judge.

As we mentioned elsewhere on this page, we are privileged to be consistently recommended to others by satisfied clients and we’re proud that as a Company established in Essex nearly 50 years ago, we have acted for different generations of the same families on many occasions.

If you want to know what people are saying about Beresfords, go to the trusted FEEFO review site or alternatively you can see video testimonials from satisfied sellers, buyers, tenants and landlords at /dont-just-take-our-word-for-it

Sunseeker Charters

“We began Sunseeker Charters in 2003 as we realized that no other brokerage house had the knowledge or the passion to confidently represent the Sunseeker name. Over the last decade, we have seen countless family groups, friends and sometimes even total strangers, come together on our yachts to see for themselves the ultimate holiday experience. As time has gone on we’ve forged great friendships with our guests, many of whom return year after year and some who have gone on to become Sunseeker owners themselves.” DISCOVER THE POSSIBILITIES

Imagine a holiday where nothing is left to chance. Where every infinite detail is planned, and arranged for you. Imagine warm sunny days, endless seas, exquisite service and memories made with your nearest and dearest.

From our Captains to our Brokers, we have the expertise to far exceed your holiday expectations, meaning all that’s left for you to do is sit back and enjoy the view.

32 | Essex Homes & Style

your guests, detailing day by day where you’ll be cruising and what you can hope to see along the way. We also take care of the finer details such as private jet charters, luxury car transfers, beach club bookings or restaurant reservations, as well as offering you expertise on the best anchorages and marinas to visit. As soon as you step on board any of our yachts, it’s the crew that deservedly take center stage. Each member has been handpicked by us for being the very best at what they do. Our chefs, stewardesses and deck crew are there for your comfort, while our captains are your key to unlocking the door to your chosen cruising grounds. From sunrise to sunset we’re there to ensure there’s never a moment where your holiday isn’t just as you imagined it. Holidays offer us all so much promise. A reward for hard work. A date in the diary to look forward to. A moment of reflection or indulgence. At Sunseeker Charters we go so much further, as we continue to define luxury yacht chartering.

The Charter Diaries...

E SET OFF EARLY FROM CANNES, leaving the hustle and bustle of the Côte d'Azur behind us, bound for Calvi on the island of Corsica. With a four hour cruise across open water ahead of us, we settle in on the aft deck of what feels like our very own Sunseeker, enjoying the sensory overload and excitement that comes with being on board one of these stunning yachts. As the cobwebs blow away, our lengthy day of travelling seems to be erased from memory. Drink in hand, and with the children on dolphin watch with the captain up on the flybridge, the stress of work and home life is left behind, and we all begin to relax.

Arriving in Calvi, the crew tell us that the locals claim that the town is the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, and with the walls of the old town visible from the marina, our minds are transported back to the 15th century. As we step ashore to explore, the crew begin to clean the boat down from our crossing and reset it ready for our arrival back at the passerelle. We decide to spend some time soaking up the local architecture and on the advice of our fantastic on board chef, we pay a visit to Annie Traiteur on rue Clemenceau, one of the most stunning delicatessens I’ve ever been in. After spending our first night on board and with a good night’s sleep and fantastic meal under our belts we are more eager than ever to cast off. Heading for our overnight stop in Bonifacio, we anchor for a swim and take lunch in an uninhabited and stunningly secluded bay to break up the journey. The crew launch the tender and we head ashore to explore the rocky cove’s private beach. Arriving in Bonafacio that evening, we’re all stunned by the sight of some of the other yachts, some motor, some powered by sail that are moored in the impressive port. It feels a real privilege to be moored among so many similar vessels that exude luxury and sophistication. That night we dine at a local quayside restaurant,

Essex Homes & Style | 33

booked by our fabulous stewardess, and return to the yacht for cocktails. The children settle in and watch a film before we all get to bed, eager to see what tomorrow will bring. We have a lazy breakfast on board alongside in the marina, and cruise out of port destined for the Maddalena Archipelago. Comprised of 62 islands and boasting a stunning 180km of unspoilt coastline our captain explains that these islands, technically under the jurisdiction of the Italians and the neighboring Island of Sardinia, are a protected geo marine reserve. Consequently, we approach well within the local 10 knot speed limit, which gives us all a chance to appreciate the emerald blues and greens of our first shallow anchorage. Everywhere we look from on board, our eyes are either drawn to a unique feature on the landscape, another stunning yacht dropping anchor or some local and unique wildlife that the captain has pointed out to us. Enjoying champagne as the sun goes down, I feel like I could sit here forever. After a couple of days and nights of island hopping the children are ready to head back to some civilization, so we make for the Corsican capital of Ajaccio on the western coast of the island. With its Gothic cathedral and un-spoilt quayside, it’s perhaps the quaintest capital cities I’ve ever visited. We step ashore, and on the crew’s recommendation head straight for the market square or “Place Foch” and the Hotel De Ville (town hall) which, it transpires, are all steeped in local history.

34 | Essex Homes & Style

After taking photos of the children with the statue of Napoleon, we have lunch at a local restaurant before heading back to the yacht. It’s an early start on our penultimate day aboard, with a short cruise just up the coast towards the impressive Monte Cinto (Mountainous National Park) with yet more secluded anchorages and a special spot for lunch. Although we feel like the week is drawing to a close, our crew’s attention to detail and exceptional service hasn’t faltered once and we’ll be very sad to say goodbye come the end of the day tomorrow. The cruise back up to Cannes is our last chance to soak up some sun, and we arrive back in port and head to the shops to indulge in some retail therapy, whilst trying to keep our baggage allowance in mind. For our last evening on board we invite the crew up for a drink with us before they serve dinner. Such fantastic service and unrivalled knowledge of our destinations has made for a hassle free and thoroughly enjoyable time. They really are what makes this experience so memorable Our last day looms, and it’s time to say goodbye to what’s felt like our very own yacht and our very own fantastic crew, without whom our holiday wouldn’t have been the same. We leave them promising ourselves to make our booking for two weeks next year! Contact one of Sunseeker Charters’ experienced charter brokers on +44 (0) 1202 682 890 or

Drive the Dream

The Geneva Motor Show is traditionally about speed, style, driving brio, multi-cylinder soundtracks and petrol power. It’s a fashion show, the world’s best catwalk for cars and the 2017 event was so special. There was also a hugely impressive new McLaren, a faster Lamborghini Huracan, a droptop Pagani, and new AMG Merc GTs of various bodystyles and power. So in Hollywood terms, the 2017 Geneva show was like a new movie starring Matt Damon, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson.

Aston Martin Valkyrie (AM-RB 001)

The revolutionary hypercar being codeveloped by Aston Martin and Red Bull Advanced Technologies, formerly identified by its codename AM-RB 001, has now been officially named the Aston Martin Valkyrie.

The name continues a fine tradition of Aston Martin ‘V’ cars. This began back in 1951 with Vantage, which was selected as a name to distinguish high performance variants of the then current model, the DB2. Boasting 125bhp versus 105bhp for the standard engine, the Vantage represented a significant increase in performance and desirability. The first time the Vantage badge appeared was on the side of the DB5.

It remained a name reserved for the most potent model derivatives until 2005, when the Vantage became a model line in its own right. Twelve years later the acclaimed family of V8 and V12-powered models has made the Vantage the most successful model in Aston Martin’s history.

Virage, Vanquish and the Aston Martin Vulcan - Aston Martin’s very own God of fire - are more recent ‘V’ cars to continue this lineage. Now, seven decades after the Vantage name started it all, the Aston Martin Valkyrie propels this uniquely distinctive and lyrical family of model names to another level.

Pagani Huayra Roadster

If there’s one thing supercar builder Horacio Pagani wants everybody to know about his new Pagani Huayra roadster, it’s this: This is not just a Huayra with the roof removed. This is a brand-new car, even if it has the same name and general shape as the gullwing coupe that came before.

Pagani says it applied lessons learned from creating the hard-core Huayra BC to every detail on the roadster. Although it uses the same Mercedes-AMG V-12 mounted amidships, the roadster is more powerful, lighter, stiffer, and said to offer better handling - all due to technological and materials improvements. Each of the 100 roadsters to be built will sell for $2.4 million, but leave your checkbook where it is: Every single one already is spoken for.

Lamborghini Huracan Performante

The latest to join this line-up is the all-new Lamborghini Huracan Performante that was revealed at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show earlier this month and will be officially arriving in the country on 7th April 2017. Inspired by the Huracan Super Trofeo race car, the new Huracan Performante gets upgraded with several race spec features that make it the brand's most powerful V10 ever. Lamborghini says the Huracan Performante has been designed for ultimate performance. The 5.2 litre V10 engine from the standard version continues to serve purpose, but gets upgrades like titanium valves, revised intake and lighter exhaust. The more sophisticated components have helped the Huracan Performante churn out 630 bhp of power and peak torque of 600 Nm. The motor comes paired to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission.

Ferrari 812 Spuerfast

The first and most difficult challenge Ferrari always faces when it decides to develop a new model is to push the boundaries of its own achievements yet again.

This challenge is made all the tougher when the task at hand involves designing a new 12-cylinder engine, the power unit that hailed the start of the glorious Prancing Horse story 70 years ago in 1947.

On this occasion, intensive research and development focused on exploiting Ferrari’s wealth of trackderived engineering know-how has produced the 812 Superfast, designed to offer its drivers both benchmark performance across the board and the most riveting and rewarding driving experience possible.

McLaren 720s

All-new McLaren 720S took Geneva 2017 by storm; replaces the 650S and will arrive in May 2017 priced from £208,600

McLaren's latest Ferrari and Porsche baiter, the 720S, is finally here. Out goes the 650S and all of its associated variants and in comes a new supercar that has “the widest breadth of road and track capability of any McLaren so far”, according to Haydn Baker, director of the McLaren Super Series. At the heart of the new 720S is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 711bhp and 770Nm of torque. On paper, it outpaces the Ferrari 488 GTB, with a 0-62mph time of 2.9 seconds (0.1 seconds ahead of the Ferrari) and a top speed of 212mph (7mph higher than its rival) Not that many supercar owners will care, but the 720S also claims up to 24.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 249g/km, too; that means it's more efficient than its arch-rival at Maranello.

The 720S is built around a lightweight carbon fibre Monocage II structure that is now extended into the roof with thin pillars, providing excellent all-round visibility and a wide housing for the dihedral doors. These open wider than before for easier access.

Defects such as dry rot, woodworm, damp, subsidence and Japanese knot weed are just a few examples of potential problems that can prove difficult and expensive to rectify. A professional survey report will not only identify potential problems but also provide an estimate of the associated repair costs.
