Dear Parents, We hope the following summary of the Sunday School lesson will help you in discussing the lesson with your children and working through this booklet together.
John 5:1-15 BIBLE STORY SUMMARY: Jesus found a lame man beside the pool and asked him, “Do you want to get well?” Jesus healed the man’s legs, and he could walk again. Jesus wanted the man to have eternal life and told him to turn away from sin. LESSON FOCUS: To understand that I am sick with sin and only Jesus can make me well. To understand that Jesus tells me, “Stop sinning. Come, follow Me.” WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT GOD: God sent Jesus to take away my sin so that I can walk with Him. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE LEARNED: 1. In Jerusalem, Jesus walked to the pool of Bethesda. What was this place like? (Around the pool lay many sick people who were hoping to be healed. They believed that when the water stirred, God had sent an angel to heal the first person to make it into the water.) 2. Jesus asked a man who was lame if he wanted to get well. Why wouldn’t the man answer, “Yes,” right away. (He had been lame for 38 years and he answered that he didn’t have anyone to help him into the pool. He may have given up hope. Also, he did not know this was Jesus, who had the power to heal.) 3. Did Jesus cure the man? (Yes, He told him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” The man was cured immediately and did as Jesus told him to do.) 4. When Jesus later saw the man at the temple, what did He tell him? (Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” Jesus wanted to heal the man’s soul as well as his body. He wanted the man to repent—to turn away from sin and turn to obedience. Sin would keep him from following Jesus and having eternal life.) Will you repent of sin and follow Jesus? Will you allow Jesus to make you well and give you eternal life? Will you begin now to walk with Jesus each day? Copyright 2008 Berean Baptist Church

When Jesus came to the Pool of Bethesda, He saw a lot of people there. Some couldn’t see, some couldn’t walk, and some were not able to move. How long had this man been unable to walk?

Jesus told the man that his sin was a much bigger problem than not being able to use his legs. His sin was keeping the man from walking with Jesus and having eternal life. Jesus wanted the man to be able to walk. What else did Jesus want for the man?
Jesus wanted to heal the man’s soul from sin. He wanted the man to have eternal life—to be Jesus’ friend on earth and to be with Him in heaven after he died.
All of the above. Jesus wanted the man to have his sins forgiven. He wanted the man to have eternal life so he could always walk with Jesus.

Will you tell God, “Thanks,” for something He has done in your life?
