irst thing first, I just want to apologise that this edition is a little late. Don’t worry I will work to ensure the next edition is out on time! Inside this edition you will find some of the photographs taken at the Jubilee celebrations. The weekend was a great success and I am sure everyone will agree a great job was done by the organising committee. The cover photo for this edition is from Brian Dobson. Jubilee Celebrations
T
here was a fantastic turnout for the various Jubilee celebrations held over the Bank Holiday weekend at the beginning of June. It was great to see so many people at the street party, and taking part to make the weekend special for the village. The photos on pages 4 & 5 were taken across the weekend and I would like to thank Janet Fountain, Alison Bailey, Helen Drake and the Fenland Citizen for submitting some of the photos across these pages. You can find a full array of photos on the Lilyholt Road Website! The winner of the £20 for submitting photos for the
Bugle and www.lilyholtroad.co.uk is Alison Bailey. The winner of the scarecrow competition was Kath Green, and Janet Fountain won the decorated Houses competition. There were some great scarecrows entered, and the houses looked great. The street party had a tonne of free (delicious) cakes and free hog roast and burgers for all. The Green Team won the children’s sports. There is more about the Kart race under the Scouts’ page.

Benwick Scout Group
O
n the Monday of the Diamond Jubilee holiday, the Scout Group held the first Benwick human-powered kart race. The karts were all home built by the young people and/or their parents/grandparents/friends/relatives, etc.
Changes in Leadership Team Chris Newman, Scout Leader, has taken up a new job that means he can’t attend every Tuesday evening, so he has had to step down as Scout Leader. Consequently we are looking to recruit a new Scout Leader.
There were four karts entered by teams of young people – all either Scouts or Cubs; and one kart (sort of!) entered by an adult team from the pub.
Scouting offers fun, challenge and everyday adventure to 400,000 girls and boys across the UK. Offering over 200 different activities from abseiling and archery to drama, street sports and water zorbing, Scouting helps 6-25 year olds grow in confidence, achieve their full potential and become active members of their communities.
The competition winner was the team with the fastest aggregate time from two timed runs along the High Street from outside Bell House to The Five Alls. The winner was Tom Hutchins.

Benwick Family Win
A
Benwick family have won an all-expenses paid trip to Cyprus as part of a national competition. The King Family, who live down Cricketers Way will stay in a 4-Star hotel thanks to winning the Candis Michelle King with (L-R) Amelia, Outstanding Family of the year 2012 Imogen and Oliver award. Michelle and Paul King set up the Little Miracles charity which provides support for over 400 families who have children with health problems ranging from autism to cerebral palsy, after the birth of their son Oliver who was born with autism, half a heart and no oesophagus. They have since been joined by daughters, Amelia and Imogen who also have health problems. The family will be taking their prize next year, to allow time to arrange new passports and the logistics of taking disabled children abroad. “The Children are really excited; none of them have ever been on a plane. To be honest, they are most excited about the plane.” Michelle told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph. “We didn’t think we had a chance, we were completely surprised.” 10
Dog Fouling
T
he Clerk of the Parish Council has asked me to draw to everyone’s attention the matter of Dog Fouling. As everyone should know, it is against the law to not clean up after your dog if it fouls on public land. It is not only annoying for people who may tread in it, but it can also be dangerous, especially to children. The main thing to remember is to carry a bag with you to clean up after your dog. You can then place it in one of the many public bins.
If you are caught not cleaning up after your dog, you face an immediate fine of £50 or up to £1000 through court. You can report people to 01354 654 321 Fenland District Council’s dog warden. www.benwickbugle.co.uk

The Benwick Butterflies
W
ednesday 30th May saw the Butterflies pre-school celebrating the Diamond Jubilee with a fun filled morning of activities. The setting was lavishly decorated with bunting, balloons and flags and all the children were given crowns, flags and glasses to celebrate the occasion! The children put together a collection of their drawings, photos, some jubilee memorabilia and even some of their toys and placed them in a time capsule! Everyone helped to bury the capsule which is to be retrieved in 25 years time.
to play some party games. The children took part in a very royal pass the parcel, there was a crown piñata and of course, lots of dancing. The morning was finished with a street style party with lots of food kindly donated by parents/carers of the group. The highlight of the celebrations was the presentation of the commemorative coins, sponsored by Greenvale PLC. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance, a massive thanks to everyone that helped make the event such a success and a very special thank you to Greenvale for the beautiful coins.

ishop As I write this the London Olympics are approaching fast, for the organisers years of planning and work are coming together and it promises to be a great show, weather permitting of course. For the athletes and competitors years of hard slog, dedication and training have been preparation for this moment to win and become Olympic champions, for many will be their life ambition. We hope our national teams will do really well, win lots of medals and make us all feel proud as we watch from the comfort of the stadium or more likely the sofa. I was reading the story of one of our former Olympic Champions Eric Liddell; you may have seen the Academy Award winning film about him ‘Chariots of Fire’. Liddell was an extraordinary runner who competed in the Olympics in July 1924 in Paris. He was the son of Missionary Parents in China and had begun running as a student at Edinburgh University. He was hotly tipped to win the 100 metres in Paris but he had been stunned to learn that some of the heats were to be run on Sunday and because of his strong belief that Sunday is the day for rest and worship to God, he refused to compete. 16
Eric did not want to cause trouble and offered to compete in other events that did not involve running on Sunday and so he went into training for the 200 and 400 metres events where he was not considered an Olympic contender. He did pretty well winning a bronze medal in the 200 metres but his critics doubted he would do well in the 400. At 6.30pm on the 11th July he lined up at the 400 metres final. At the crack of the starter’s pistol, Eric was off like a shot, running the first 200 metres in 22.2 seconds, with American Horatio Fitch three metres behind him. There seemed no way he could continue that pace for the entire race. Down the final straight, Fitch strained to close the gap only to see Liddell throw his head back and put on a burst of speed that carried him to victory by five metres. When his time of 47.6 seconds was announced as a new Olympic and world record, the crowd went wild. The next year Eric decided to go to China as a Missionary to teach and to serve the Chinese people he loved, turning his back on fame and fortune to follow God’s calling. He lived the rest of his life in China until his death, aged 43 in a Japanese internment camp in 1945. Eric Liddell epitomised a New Testament message from St.

Paul in 1 Corinthians chapter 9 verse 24-25 he says this ‘24You’ve all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race. Everyone runs; one wins. Run to win. 25All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You’re after one that’s gold eternally.’ So then as we enjoy the Olympics let’s reflect on our Life Race, the destination to which we are heading, the prize that we hope to win, and perhaps think about if we might want to find a higher purpose in knowing and serving God.

Friends of Benwick Church
A
s those of us in Benwick can see the building is now more or less completed, currently waiting for the floor to dry which will take us into July then its curtains, carpets, final decorations, and a few more final touches and then hopefully by the end of July we should have a fully functional home for the Church and a first class meeting room / Cinema / facility for the Village. The work in the Village hall has been completed and I’m sure all those who have been in agree what a fantastic difference it makes. Again we just need to hang the front curtain and that will be completed. We are currently planning our first official Church service and celebration, provisionally that will be August 26th at 3pm. The official opening is planned for October 21st at 2.30pm and again until this is confirmed by the Bishop is also provisional. Once we have these confirmed we shall put a notice on the front notice board of the Village Hall.

Neighbourhood Watch
B
enwick Village neighbourhood watch has now been active since June 20th. The NHW is covering almost all of the village, if you have any issues you can contact an admin as listed and they will direct you to your street coordinator, who can then assist you. We aim to play an active part in the village, working closely with the Parish Council. We currently have a number of window stickers available, and currently have a Facebook page and are hoping to have a website shortly.
So far, we do not have coordinators for the following: • Chapel Gardens • Old Orchard • Bakehouse Close If you feel you could cover any of these areas please let us know and we will then be able to have the whole village under the neighbourhood watch.

The Village Hall
T
he Village Hall as undergone some great renovations, with a new ceiling in both the Meeting Room and Main Hall, new lights in the main hall and the walls have finally been plastered and freshly painted. There are also new heaters in the meeting room. It now looks much more modern and comepetivite with other local halls.
To book all three rooms for a function on a saturday, it will be charged at the cost of £20 per hour for all users, minimum charge £100 (Day) and £175 (Night).
The official reopening is on the 29th September at the Harvest Festival, there will be more about that in the next Bugle. The prices for rental have now changed for any new bookings. The club rates for regular users remain unchanged. Benwick Forget-me-Nots
O
n May 16th the members enjoyed a day out to Norwich. The morning was spent at the Van Dal shoe factory which was very interesting. We were told all about shoes from choosing the various leather hides for different styles of shoe to the finished product. Then we were taken on a tour round the factory and saw how the shoes were made, treated and packed. Afterwards we went to the factory shop where several members bought shoes at bargain prices. We then went into Norwich for lunch and the afternoon was spent shopping. June 7th was the Club’s Jubilee Party. The evening was a tremendous success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Members got into the spirit of things and wore their hats, waved flags, had an excellent buffet and enjoyed the entertainment by Tom Kennedy and each member received a souvenir jubilee teaspoon. Angela Fisher won the competition for her crown.

On 18th July we go Guyhirn for lunch and Ten Pin Bowling. We have a trip to Boston market and Skegness planned for Wednesday 25th July departing Benwick at 8.30 am. Members £12 and Non Members £13. Open to all. On Thursday, 2nd August the meeting will be a Chocolate evening with a game of Curling or Table games for the less active i.e. Bingo, Whist Dominoes or Scrabble. The outing for August is on 22nd to the National Memorial Aboretum near Litchfield, departing Benwick at 8.30 am. Members £16 and Non Members £17. Open to all. New members are always welcome!
June 20th was another day out. This time we went to Bury St. Edmunds on market day. The weather was really kind to us – sunshine all day. The fire engines were still in the town centre and some of it was still cordoned off 26

aturday 28th April saw many Benwick residents out at The Five Alls to support a fundraising race night, raising funds for Friends of Benwick School and Benwick Butterflies Pre-school Group.
