Splitting Dimensions Ben Robichaux Approximate duration: 7:45

Program Notes Splitting Dimensions is a piece that dips into the speculative side of quantum mechanics. The work is based on a theory that every choice made generates a number of new universes based on the number of choices given. In the case of this piece, there are simply two choices. The concrete choice (or rather the universe of the choice made) is represented by the piano. The universe created by the alternative option is represented by stereo playback. Despite the similarities that these two universes most likely have, the playback represents an exaggerated perspective as viewed from the universe of the choice made. This exaggeration demonstrates the complex psychological tendency to always view the grass to be greener on the other side. As the piece carries on, the playback becomes distinctly different from the acoustic instrument to demonstrate the exponential exaggeration of “what ifs” that pile up as we move on from a specific choice.

Performance Notes Splitting Dimensions involves specific timing to be cohesive with the fixed media. There are a few ways to execute this. The use of a timer placed on the stand of the piano being played can be effective supposing that whomever activates the media is in sync with the player. The use of a timing patch using a program such as Max/MSP is advised. Such a patch can be designed to activate a timer while simultaneously activating the media. While this method is most effective, many players will not have access to Max/MSP or any similar software that could perform such tasks. Again, a timer and a little synchronization will work just as effectively. While the music is unmetered, there are several indications of time-management throughout the piece that should be observed. For instance, unbeamed note heads indicate figures that can be played freely, but the proportions to the indicated time frame they are a part of should be noted. At 2:40 for example, the indicated gesture is written without beams but should be played in the span of five seconds as it only encompasses approximately half of the ten-second time frame that is written. See Fig.1.

Fig. 1-The gesture should be played in a five second time span based on its proportional size to the time frame indicated.

If notes are beamed together, the gesture should fall into a rhythmically consistent pattern. The length of the gesture should be proportional to the time frame indicated, while being rhythmically consistent. See Fig. 2.

Fig. 2-The gesture should be completed in about six or seven seconds. Each eighth note should be played with equal duration (excluding the final note which is held). ! The waveforms of both the left and right channels of the fixed media are indicated on the score. If the time markers are followed correctly, then the dynamic gestures of the media should be completely cohesive with the piano. It is worth Splitting Dimensions noting that certain gestures in the media lend themselves to enhancement based on the performer’s specific timing in relation to the audio. See Fig. 3.
