Š2016

Ben Robichaux

Electronic Etude No. 1 (2016) Approximate Duration: 7’15”

Performance Notes: All accidentals apply only to the octave in which they appear. The score is transposing including the electronics, which transpose up a major second just as the trumpet does.

The piece requires the use of a patch operable from the program Max/MSP. The patch can be acquired upon request from the composer and can be operated on a free downloadable runtime version of the program. The composer can be contacted at robichauxbenjamin@yahoo.com. The runtime version of the program can be downloaded from www.cycling74.com.

A performance of the work will require an interface to allow the computer used to communicate with a stereo speaker system.

The patch includes a set of cues that trigger different processes that coincide with the trumpet part. The cues should be triggered at specific times as indicated in the score. The cue should be triggered in correspondence with the left side of the box surrounding the cue indication. See Fig. 1. F ig. 1 The cue is triggered when the left side of the box is reached in the music.

"

Electronic Etude No. 1 synthesizes sine tones and processes the sounds of a trumpet during a live performance. The processed sounds include the harmonization of the trumpet. This harmonization takes the trumpet’s sound and bends it to create harmonies of 2nds, 3rds, 5ths and octaves above and below the sounding trumpet pitches. The harmonization appears in a number of ways ranging from simple imitation to high-speed, randomized counterpoint. The sine tones create an atmosphere of reflection, while the live trumpet and harmonizations steadily increase in tension to a climactic moment that ends suddenly with a low sine tone. This tone creates a wall (Transposing up that the frantic trumpet and harmonizations run into, stopping the frenzied momentum in its Major 2nd) is somber in nature with a gloomy reflective sine tone progression tracks. a The closing material ending the work. & -Ben Robichaux
