TAXONOMY

As the city of Los Angeles continues to grow and urban sprawl reaches the physical boundaries of habitable terrain, we are forced to look at contrasting landscapes and challenge the unstable topography of these new locales. When dealing with unstable terrain, we cannot foresee the vigor and extent of damage a landslide can have to its immediate surroundings. By understanding the trajectory and flow pattern of landslides, debris catchement systems are implemented to catalyze the mitigation processes and allow the architecture to grow from these land manipulations. Over time, the correlation of unstable topography and the expansion of the facility, allow a new typology of Architecture to emerge through the destruction of land.

PROBLEM What is a debris flow? It is a rapidly moving slurry of water, mud, rock, vegetation and debris.Their development is strongly tied to exceptional storm periods of prolonged rainfall. As mountain side communities continue to thrive, debris basins are created in order to collect debris to protect houses, people, and streets from being destroyed with debris flow.

SOLUTION After finding a proper site that conflicts with landslides, I try to mitigate the earth through an architecture intervention that responds to its position on site. In the process of mitigating earth I plan on developing a sprawling campus for T.H.O.R. that mitigates landslides while interacting with them to create spaces from accumulating debris in Catchment Pods.

PENETRATED GALLERIA_mix use_gallery space_boardwalk extension

CONCEPT

Existing Program on Boardwalk

The design proposal for this mix use building comes from trying to maximize the use of an existing parking lot into a building that adequately meets the needs of its surroundings while accommodating for parking and people. By having a building that interacts with the boardwalk, I propose Penetrated Galleria; a place where locals, artists and tourists come together to enjoy the environment of Venice Beach. In order to create an interactive enviornment one major proposition was having public circulation throughout the whole building extending from the boardwalk that allows the people to enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean from elevated vantage points.

By taking some of the local program found on the boardwalk, i propose my mix use building to be designed accommodating for a selected few. The choosen program are; an Autodesk office, Parking, Graffitti Interraction walls, Medicinal Marijuana Shop, Gallery Space / Retail and Housing.

SITE TRANSFORMATION

Throughout my trip in India it was evident that the low economy level has led to unimaginable poverty and the formation of slums. The lack of water circulation, sewage treatment and waste removal in these heavily populated areas have turned public parks into a micro-landfills. My proposed design is to promote personal hygiene through a constructed wetland system and washroom facilities that filters water onsite to be used by the nearby slum inhabitants and the locals of Ahmadabad. The driven design is circulation porosity from the individual program to the entire site, waste cleansing throughout facilities and site, and primitive integration of passive systems to promote a cool enviorment in a hot climate, along with a pool area for locals to enjoy.

DISSOLVING ASSISTANCE CENTER_artificial city park_public facilities

PLUG-IN DISPERSEMENT

The design proposal of this project is to introduce a dispersing facility that caters to needs of the homeless by providing a plug-in unit that is deployed throughout Los Angeles. On site a space frame structure is created in order to support a gantry system, the gantry system is used to organize the plug-in program as well as assist in loading them onto cargo trucks to be dispersed throughout LA. Beneath this gantry system lie two towers supporting the gantry structure, the plug-in program that is dispersed throughout Los Angeles consists of; housing, libraries, health/restrooms, soup kitchens and green recreational spaces.

Astronomer’s house is a project that was intended to produce documented drawings of a fictional residence of our choice. As a process we choose Bill Nye the science guy to be our potential client, we also gave the scenario that he wanted a residence where he can enjoy his passion for Astrology. By having criteria to meet we began to design a residence that was based on natural lighting, openings to the sky/outside, and a mezzanine to do his astrological studies. To design the residence we oriented the interior program to be related to the sun during the day or the stars during the night. This residence construction is mainly Type 5 construction due to the laws and regulations of Los Angeles, making it’s structure wood frame.
