PLACES TO VISIT ABERDEENSHIRE PLACES TO VISIT - SHIRE Crathes Castle - is a magnificent 16th-century castle, with an intricate maze of turrets, towers, oak panels and painted ceilings. Located near the picturesque town of Banchory it is also the home of ‘The Horn of Leys’ which was given to the Burnett family in the 14th century by Robert the Bruce. Crathes, Banchory AB31 5QJ
Haddo House - Designed in 1732 by William Adam, but the house underwent an opulent remodelling in the 1880s. The Georgian style with a luxurious Victorian interior houses family portraits trace of the Gordon family, who played a huge part in Scottish history. George Gordon, 1st Earl of Aberdeen was Lord Chancellor of Scotland; the 4th Earl served as Prime Minister.
Balmoral – Balmoral has been one of the residences of the British royal family since 1852, when the estate and its original castle were bought from the Farquharson family by Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. Soon afterwards the house was found to be too small and the current Balmoral Castle was commissioned. Balmoral remains private property of the Queen. Ballater, AB35 5TB
Falls of Feugh – The Falls of Feugh are a short walk from Banchory centre. There is a stone-built Bridge of Feugh footbridge spanning the river which is popular with visitors who watch salmon climb the natural leap as they make their way up the Falls during spawning season. The best months for spotting salmon leap are September to November and February to March. Banchory, AB31 6NL
Bow Fiddle Rock - A natural sea arch near Portknockie It is so called because it resembles the tip of a fiddle bow dating from the Neoproterozoic Era, 1,000 to 541 million years ago. The rock formation is both a tourist attraction and nesting place for sea birds including herring gulls, great black-backed gulls and lesser black-backed gulls. Portknockie, AB56 4NL
Newburgh Seal Beach – Newburgh Beach, twenty minutes’ drive north of Aberdeen, is one of the best places in the United Kingdom for spotting marine wildlife.
