Inspired by Mies Van Der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion and particularly the simplistic interplay of space and light, the intent of this project was to explore submerged architecture while alluding to through similar methods a greater spatial volume. Examining the opportunities and limitations of confined spatial regions, the achieved response explores minimalist divisions both through vertical and horizontal planes in order to maximise natural lighting and ventilation. The resulting proposal utilises a central circulation path, minimising the division between public and private space thus effectively utilising the confined and limited spatial opportunities.

Designed without reference to any precedent study, the intent of this project was to explore the potential relationship between simplistic and discrete architectural forms. Examining the manner in which form may be utilised to create unique spatial regions while creating overall forms which fit seamlessly within the surrounding context. Utilising angular architecture, the form of the scheme is positioned relative to the slope of the site allowing the roof plane to therefore run parallel to the adjacent street. Suggesting to people passing around the site, that the overall form is simply a raised extension of the ground plane.

The following unique exploration of containment between public and private space is with regards to the spatial theories of Louis Kahn’s and the Trenton Bath House. The intent of the project was to define over multiple levels through limited form, a journey directly reflecting the functional purpose of the building. Form which, similar to Kahn defined space without completely enclosed spaces, rather though limited vertical planes which suggested the definition between private and public space. While the overall form of the building contorts the responders perception of scale as the simplistic exterior contradicts in one sense the complex interior, yet at another correlates with the logical organisation of space.

rem koolhaas : bordeaux house study A detailed project exploring the Bordeaux House by Rem Koolhaas, the intent was to examine various aspects of the scheme including the structural balance, sectional division of spatial regions, functionality of transparent elements and the physical incorporation into the surrounding natural environment. Combined, the studies explored theories of public and private circulation, structural in-balance reflecting the occupant’s personal disability and notions of sectional interaction between architectural and natural environment.

Focused on the manipulation of the standard surrounding urban fabrics architectural order, the intent of the project was to explore similar notions explored in Rem Koolhaas’ Bordeaux House. Notions including the division and separation of public and private spaces through both vertical and horizontal planes, allowing the coexistent spatial regions of two separate occupants to be blurred. Utilising numerous interconnecting curvilinear planes, the division between public and private spaces are blurred between both houses. Enhanced further through the manipulation of light and shadow over the interconnecting forms, the continuity of spatial regions is exploited relative to the manipulation of the standard order of the surrounding urban fabric.

morphological study of parramatta

The premise of this project was to explore the morphological dimension of Parramatta with regards to spatial theory. Examining the city from the current and proposed future states of development to analysis and deconstruct the spatial and morphological dimensions. Deconstruct and compare with spatial theory, which suggests that architectural space exists not as a contained volume defined by built forms but rather as a continuum or series of correlating continuums of spatial regions which are defined by random reference points in the form of built elements. The project therefore pursues the argument that spatial theory potentially defines the morphological developments of urban fabrics.

peter zumthor : swiss sound box study A comprehensive analysis of Peter Zumthor’s Swiss Sound Box reveals that the complex structure of in balance is more than simply a temporary pavilion. Rather it exists as a series of correlating individual spaces which combine to manipulate that standard experience of the responder. Defined by 12 individual spatial sectors, each sector is meticulously placed according to the function within the greater scheme. While further manipulating the collective range of the responder’s senses through the manipulation of light and shadow resulting in an effective correlation between the responder, performance and architecture.

parramatta theatre complex

Utilising extensive analysis of Zumthor’s Swiss Sound Box and Parramatta’s morphological dimension, the intent of this project was centred on the redevelopment of the Riverside theatre complex of Parramatta. Re-engaging the site within the greater morphological context through the manipulation of the standard perimeter, the overall development aims to through the correlation of individual forms, redefine the standard understanding of architectural space. Through the individual separation of functional requirements, each form responds directly to the requirements of the occupant and immediate urban fabric. While the collective spatial region which exist between are defined through multiple light-weight glass planes allowing the blurring of internal and external regions.

architectural signage & navigation Involving building diagrams and graphic signage, the following outlines a project concerning the development of an improved building signage system. Aimed at effectively improving the navigation of students through the Webster Building at UNSW, the system had to accommodate various factors, including multiple faculties, room types and services. Primarily achieved through a standard colour scheme range and simplistic graphics, the system developed simplifies the key architectural information (floor plans etc.) refining them to be aesthetically engaging and effective.

A sample developed building information model of a mixed commercial and residential development including all important components. Components including a base landscape developed from surveyor contours, a sample cityscape (including blocks, streets and footpaths etc.), multiple buildings defined in every manner (materials and dimensions etc.), surrounding landscaping (including vegetation, levelling and garden beds etc.) and furnishings both standard and custom designed elements. The number of drawings presented have all extracted directly from the model including the rendered representations.

parametric architecture responsive parametric exoskeleton

Exploring the theory of prosthetic architecture, the intent of this project was to examine the manner in which emerging techniques such as parametric design may re-define architectural systems of greater depth. Utilising the theory of primitive geometry, the scheme explores the idea of a prosthetic exoskeleton and variable floor plan, directly defined by the occupancy density over each floor throughout numerous individual sectors. Calculating in real time the number of people in each sector and either expanding or contracting the relative boundary segment accordingly accommodates the number of people. Resulting in numerous sectors over various levels expanding and contracting, directly defining the form of the exoskeleton.

architectural form manipulation

frank gehry : vitra design museum form conversion A conceptual exercise of architectural form and the theory of figures such as Friedrich Froebel, the project explores the manipulation of form within Frank Gehry’s Vitra Design Museum. Exploring the manner in which central elements of form may potentially be rearranged to create new and unique spatial dynamics. The intent was to explore the intentions of Gehry, including the creation of expressive and convoluted interplays of form as Paul Heyer stated. Exploring notions on internal and external fluidity; defining seamless boundaries between internal and external spaces. While portraying a contained and plausible overall form as achieved partially through the symmetrical division of the design.

13th shelter design competition

level one

habitat beneath the surface entry

Requiring the responder’s interpretation of what a ‘shelter’ exactly is, the intent of this project was to portray the relationship which potentially exists between internal and external space with direct regards to the surrounding environment. The design suggests a conceptual ocean dwelling, one which allows the responder within to directly engage with the sheer force of the ocean environment within the upper level, while simultaneously experiencing the calm of the ocean below the waves in the lower levels. Utilising multiple levels, and a central stair to divide and separate the various public and private living spaces etc. while additional split levels are incorporated to suggest more expansive spaces within the compact design.

commerical centre redevelopment modern adaption of abandonment

Defined as a series of precast components, the angular form of this strip mall reinvention project aims to architecturally engage the surrounding urban fabric in a unique manner. Achieved primarily through the positioning of the main entrances towards either the commercial sector to the west or the residential sector to the south east; the scheme focuses on the conceptual development rather than the refinement of a practical application. Exploring how the manipulation of architectural form may effectively engage particular sectors of a surrounding community.
