davi d g e ffe n From Brooklyn Boy to Hollywood Power Broker

an am e r i can maste r s fi lm

Tue 20th, 8 p.m. thirteen.org/americanmasters

CITIZEN GEFFEN FOR OVER 25 YEARS, THIRTEEN’s award-winning American Masters series has been telling the stories of groundbreaking artists and their lasting impact on American culture. Recent films have profiled Woody Allen and Johnny Carson— notoriously shy icons who have long eluded the cameras of documentary filmmakers. This month, we’re proud to present the first film biography of another elusive entertainment giant with Inventing David Geffen, a portrait of the complex and compelling man whose far-reaching influence—as agent and manager, record industry mogul, Hollywood and Broadway producer, and billionaire philanthropist— has helped shape American popular culture for the past four decades. Written, directed, and produced by Emmy-winning filmmaker Susan Lacy, American Masters creator and executive producer, the film chronicles the media mogul’s unorthodox rise from working-class Brooklyn boy to billionaire entertainment power broker through extensive interviews with Geffen himself. Steven Spielberg, Cher, Tom Hanks, Elton John, Neil Young, Mike Nichols, Yoko Ono, and the late Nora Ephron are among the

media luminaries who illustrate Geffen’s riveting story. A multimillionaire before he was 30, Geffen got his start in the William Morris Agency mailroom in 1964. He founded Asylum Records, Geffen Records, and Geffen Pictures, launching the early careers of Joni Mitchell; Crosby, Stills and Nash; the Eagles; Guns N' Roses; and Tom Cruise in Risky Business. He produced the Broadway musicals Cats and Dreamgirls, and with Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg co-founded DreamWorks SKG, which released Oscar winners American Beauty, Gladiator, and A Beautiful Mind, as well as the Shrek franchise. Geffen has not avoided conflict or controversy. Inventing David Geffen addresses his rifts with the Eagles and the Clintons, his lawsuit against Neil Young, his unsuccessful stint at Warner Bros. Pictures, and his struggles with cancer, homosexuality, and the AIDS-related deaths of his friends, including Broadway choreographer Michael Bennett. Ultimately, Geffen’s story embodies the American dream, where success is achieved through hard work, relentless determination, and a dash of self-invention.

50-plus friends, colleagues, clients, and American Masters is made possible by the support of the National Endowment for the Arts and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Additional funding for American Masters is provided by Rosalind P. Walter, The Blanche & Irving Laurie Foundation, Rolf and Elizabeth Rosenthal, Cheryl and Philip Milstein Family, Jack Rudin, Vital Projects Fund, The André and Elizabeth Kertész Foundation, Michael & Helen Schaffer Foundation, and public television viewers. Additional support for this program is provided by the Ziff Family.
