INTRODUCTIONS When my eye is in, life as a painter is exhilarating; potential paintings leap out almost everywhere I look and I never tire of it. Yet it is also frustrating since only a small fraction of these ever materialise. My work in this show represents some of those that made it over the last 16 months.  Almost all are from the streets of London, painted on location, directly from life. There are some impromptu portraits too, which were also painted from life. Completing the collection, though, are two much larger paintings that were developed in the studio based on small plein air studies. Working in this way not only allows greater scale but also a deeper exploration of what can be achieved through a more complex layering of paint.

Benjamin Hope June 2017

I take inspiration from my materials, from the human form, and from classical, Renaissance and 19th - 20th century sculpture.  My bronze nudes record investigations of surface textures, modelling materials and patinas, and reflect my love of the works of Michelangelo and Rodin. They are also - like my portrait sculptures - attempts to capture what is distinctive and distinctively beautiful about the particular models used. My wire work began as an experiment in the sculptural potential of armature wire; it has since developed into a contemporary response to classical traditions. All my work is based on a foundation of drawing. Sculpting in wire makes this explicit - each piece is like a drawing in three-dimensional space.

Nelson’s Pavement #2 2017, oil on canvas, 40.6 × 58.4 cm, 16 × 23 ins

I painted Nelson’s Pavement #2 partly on 22 March 2017—the day of the Westminster terror attack. The sheer number of sirens made it obvious that something serious was happening and yet I felt perfectly safe and people nearby on Whitehall remained calm. Shortly before the incident, though, several groups of French schoolchildren had chatted to me as they headed towards the Houses of Parliament and I can’t help wondering whether or not they were the ones caught up in it.

My wire pieces cast interesting shadows when placed in direct light. The complex three-dimensional form of the wire resolves into a simpler twodimensional image on the wall. If the light source moves, different perspectives on the subject materialise in the shadows.â€

About Benjamin Hope Benjamin studied mathematics and physics at university because he was interested in them. His long-term plan throughout, though, was to become a painter and his artistic training happened concurrently through experimentation, practice, and reading. He has been a full time artist since 2011.
