I NEW IUAV LIBRARY - VenICE project for the new library for the IUAV University of Venice professor Massimiliano Roca Architectural Design Studio III The district in which the project is developed is Dorsoduro, located in the south-western portion of the city of Venice, in front of the Giudecca island and the Giudecca canal. The district is characterized by two fabrics, of different periods and types. It is for this reason that it is distinguished by the rest of the stratified fabric of the entire city. The project area is a potential pivot point between these two fabrics. The first phase was to reiterate the measurement of full and empty space, already set and introduced by the linearity of the Ligabue warehouses, to give a homogeneous front towards the Giudecca canal. Subsequently, considering the consolidated fabric to the north, interference was introduced referring to the Campiello de L’Oratorio and the Rio S. Nicolò dei Mendicoli, to ensure that the project is defined by the forms of the context. It has subsequently been found that in Venice there is never the condition whereby two squares are opposed to each other. For this reason, in front of the pre-existing Campiello, a full volume was contrasted, generating, consequently, an empty space adjacent to it. Having constituted the planning strategy, it was defined what should be the hardest and most permeable fronts. We have opted for hard fronts in correspondence of the open space between the two volumes, so as to recreate the recurring condition of the Venetian campiello, while the outer edges have been defined as more permeable, to obtain a constant relationship with the around. The inhabited wall was the original concept of the project development. The service areas have been defined as inhabited walls; these were constituted through addition and subtraction processes and became the founding element of the project.
