IV EXTRA MOENIA - MILANO a new project for the prison of Bollate in Milan professor Andrea di Franco Architectural Design Studio
The project is located in the prison of Bollate, in Milan. This project starts from the identification of a theme, that of the limit, from which the architectural project begins, in order to make the prison from a place of detention to a place of relationship. The limit, intended both as a physical and psychological limit, is substituted in the project by the typology of the court building, through the addition of a new longidutinal building, with a porch on the ground floor, between the various departments. In this way the limit represented by the wall of arias for walkig, is replaced by another limit, which delimits but, at the same time, contains uses and puts in relation spaces that previously did not communicate with each other. The intervention, in fact, also provides that the various departments communicate with each other and introduces, for prisoners, the ability to move from one department to another. The designed courts are themed, in order to respond to the needs that the prisoners have expressed in the various meetings we had with them inside the prison, so as to increase functions that are currently incomplete or poor. The protagonist of the entire intervention is the porch, which accompanies the design of all the open spaces, containing functions, changing dimensions, height, dividing and connecting the spaces and guaranteeing, at the same time, shaky areas, one of the most urgent needs for prisoners at the moment.
