DRINK RESPONSIBLY We hope you have a blast at Brewfest. Here’s some tips on how to get the most out of three amazing days of craft-beer drinking on the banks of the Deschutes:

PACE YOURSELF

PLEASE LEAVE YOUR FURRY FRIENDS AT HOME. Only service dogs are allowed into the Bend Brewfest. Comfort or emotional support animals are not permitted.

We’ve got plenty of beer, so take your time. And it’s good beer, so there’s no need to rush through it. Know your limits and don’t exceed them. Also, pay attention to the ABV (alcohol by volume) listings. Drinking four 11 percent imperial porters is a lot different than polishing off four 3.2 percent summer shandies.

EAT, HYDRATE, REPEAT Bring a re-usable water bottle and use it often. We’ll have water stations at the Amphitheater and highly encourage everyone at the Brewfest to drink as much water as possible. Also, make sure to grab something to eat at Brewfest or come with some food in your belly.

HAVE A PLAN Don’t go into the Brewfest blind. Study up on the map and figure out what breweries and beers you want to hit. This way you’ll get to try the beers you really want early and won’t waste valuable time and bladder space on samples you’re not really that excited about.

BEND’S FIRST

BEER EXPLOSION

NAVIGATE BY

BEER STYLE Want a lager or pilsner early in the day? Thinking about tackling pale ales on Day 1 and IPAs on Day 2? Looking for a cool-down porter or stout?

Central Oregon’s love affair with all things fermented is a bit of a modern day phenomenon.

Welcome to our Navigation by Style section! We’ve taken the guesswork out of which beers are what so that you can find exactly what you’re looking for, even if you’re not exactly sure what that is. Color Key: WEST TENT

In the days of Prohibition, brewing beer was illegal. (Oregon actually jumped the gun early and banned alcohol in 1916, three years before the 18th Amendment prohibited the sale and production of “intoxicating liquids.”) If caught, these early homebrewers faced heavy fines, or worse, jail time. But there was money to be made and times were tough.

Although there was never an Al Capone-style shootout between rum runners and the police, Bend was the scene of an attempted hit on state prohibition agents C.C. McBride and Buck Marriott in the spring of 1926. In February of that year, McBride and Marriott were involved in the fatal shooting of a suspected moonshiner, Vayle Taylor, in Crook County. Locals were enraged at what they thought was the state overreaching its bounds and Taylor simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The officers’ actions were debated around Central Oregon for weeks and the two faced multiple threats of retaliation.

On March 8, an explosion demolished the rear portion of Marriott’s apartment on Congress Street near downtown Bend. No one was hurt, but the common

belief throughout town was that Marriott was targeted for his role in Taylor’s death by members of the High Desert and Bear Creek gangs. For more information on Bend’s colorful past, swing by the Deschutes Historical Museum at 129 NW Idaho Avenue or go to deschuteshistory.org.

While a true Kölsch can only be brewed in Cologne, Germany, these Kölsch-style beers pay homage to these highly-drinkable beers are similar to their pilsner cousins, but with a drier, crisper finish.

Bonito

Bend, Oregon

ABV: 4.5% IBU: 20

Apricot Cider

Pressed golden orange apricots dominate this uniquely tart cider. The Apricots add a subtle flavor that is like combining a peach and a plum but not quite as sweet. The Romans and Greeks had it right when they used apricots as a main ingredient of their drink known as the "Nectar of the Gods”. The driest of our ciders leaves a lasting round finish that calls for more. May the Gods be appeased. RANK IT: LOVE LIKE SO-SO NO WAY

Our Bonito blonde ale is inspired by our perma-sunny days. This brew draws you in with its golden color and soft malt character, while the light mouthfeel and dry finish keeps you coming back. And what would set a San Diego Blonde apart? A subtle hint of hops, naturally. The bigger brother of our Bridge Bender IPA with gobs of hops and a healthy dry hopping this will definitely get your golf outing or bachelor/bachelorette party off on the right foot! Pineapple Mango Cider

Unflitered Sculpin

It started with a simple idea, "What would Summer in a bottle taste like?" This is our shot. Yes, we know cloyingly sweet pineapple cider has been done before, but nothing like this Off-Dry, balanced cider blend that we have forged. In addition, we added mango that adds further complexity to this unique cider. This cherry kettle sour is the perfect pairing for your summer. A deep red color and a bit of tartness from the cherries will pair perfect with BBQ's and floating on the water! RANK IT: LOVE LIKE SO-SO NO WAY

Our trophy beer, extra-hopped and unfiltered. Our Unfiltered Sculpin IPA packs extra hops into every sip, enhancing the classic Sculpin notes of fresh apricot, peach, mango and lemon with a slight haze and less bitterness. Freshness is key to every beer, but especially true for this extra-hopped IPA—store cold and drink soon. RANK IT: LOVE LIKE SO-SO NO WAY

A Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Point’s original Master Brewer Peter A’Hearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, it’s a great bridge beer into the sour styles. RANK IT: LOVE LIKE SO-SO NO WAY

Dragonfruit

Gluten Free

A long time ago when dragons roamed the land, soldiers were sent out to bring back one thing for their emperor – the prized Dragon Fruit. Legend has it that as he thrust his sword in the heart of the dragon, fire and fruit was breathed out in his last breath. The fruit's cactus like neon-magenta skin and lime green scales very closely resemble the flesh of a mythical dragon. It is believed that those who feast on the flesh, which has a mild kiwi/sorbet flavor, will be endowed with the strength and ferocity of the dragon. Side effects might include breathing fire and other unknowns. LIKE SO-SO NO WAY RANK IT: LOVE

Nestled along the scenic banks of the Deschutes River, the Les Schwab Amphitheater is proud to be one of the truly unique outdoor entertainment venues in the entire Pacific Northwest. A mecca for music lovers, beer connoisseurs and multi-sport enthusiasts alike, the Amphitheater has hosted more than 1 million visitors since first opening its gates in 2002. In addition to the Bend Brewfest, which is now in its 15th year, the Amphitheater has welcomed some of music’s biggest names, from living legends like Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson to acts that are shaping the direction of their own generation such as Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, Phish, The Avett Brothers, and Alabama Shakes. The Les Schwab Amphitheater also serves as the finish line for the Pole Pedal Paddle, Central Oregon’s iconic multi-discipline race from Mount Bachelor to Bend, and proudly hosts events such as the graduation ceremony for OSU-Cascades.

LIVING HISTORY

Located where the old Shevlin-Hixon timber mill once stood, the Les Schwab Amphitheater is named in honor of Leslie Bishop Schwab, Central Oregon’s legendary businessman behind the Les Schwab Tire Centers. An ambitious, natural-born leader educated in a pre-World War II Bend logging camp, Schwab bought a two-man tire shop in Prineville in 1952 and turned it into a Fortune 500 company that at one time was the second-largest private business in the entire state of Oregon. While the Amphitheater itself is just 16 years old, many of the supporting buildings surrounding the venue are originals from Bend’s heyday as a logging town. The artists’ dressing rooms - train cars refurbished by Mountain View High School shop students and Keeton King Contruction - were once the schoolhouse where Schwab attended class. And the “White House” behind the stage used to be the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company’s management office. BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS We build relationships that help children realize their potential and dream of a future full of possibilities. These relationships help children grow into positive healthy adults which makes for a better community for all. Our program is 100% donor funded and offered free throughout Central Oregon to all kids, mentors and families who seek our services. We partner with parents/guardians, volunteers, and others in the community and hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program achieving results in three outcome areas: 1) Higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships. 2) Avoidance of risky behaviors. 3) Educational success. Together we can form a stronger, healthier community that we all can enjoy.

DESCHUTES RIVER CONSERVANCY The Deschutes River Conservancy is a non-profit organization with the mission to restore streamflow and improve water quality in the Deschutes Basin. Founded in 1996 as a collaborative, multi-stakeholder organization, the DRC's Board of Directors makes decisions by consensus and is comprised of key public and private interests including farming, ranching, timber, development, hydro-power, recreation, tribes, and environment.
