Church Approves Recommendation to Partner with the Center for Congregational Health in a Spiritual Discernment Process for Strategic Visioning To begin the strategic visioning process, a Leadership Team will be formed. This group, comprised of 12-15 church members, will be responsible for providing leadership and covering organizational details as the process moves forward. If selected by the Committee on Committees and approved by the church, each member will be required to participate in ALL congregational meetings (three to four) and ALL committee meetings (at least six), in addition to a leadership retreat that will last approximately six hours on a Saturday. It is our desire to begin the congregational meetings and committee meetings soon and, hopefully, conclude the congregational meetings by late May. If you would like to nominate someone, including yourself, please contact a member of the Committee on Committees or one of the Deacon Officers. Their names are in Dr. Gentry’s Passages for Our Journey on page two. Kim Jones, Deacon Body Chairperson

Women’s Celebration March 21, 2013

Beginning March 1, a new sign in/out procedure for using the TLC during open gym time will be implemented. Participants will be given an ID card that will be used to sign in/out by simply scanning the barcode on the card at the TLC desk. So that ID cards may be prepared, participants are asked to complete a TLC Registration Form, which may be obtained in the church office, at the welcome desk outside the worship center, or at the TLC desk. When completed, forms may be returned to the church office or TLC desk. Members will be notified when their ID card is ready for pickup at the TLC desk.

Employment Opportunity Tabernacle is accepting applications for the position of Administrative Assistant. Applications may be obtained in the church office and will be accepted through February 24, 2013.

Calling All Men . . . Workday at the Church Saturday, February 23 9:00 a.m. until finished The D.O.T. has given Tabernacle permission, on this day ONLY, to clean off the property along the bypass at the back of the parking lot. Please bring work gloves, cutting equipment (chain saws, shears, etc.), and any equipment you have that might be useful. DON’T FORGET SAFETY GEAR! Breakfast will be served in the Fellowship Hall at 8:00 a.m. See you there!

Passages for Our Journey The church, in a Called Conference on Sunday, February 17, voted to engage the services of the Center for Congregation Health to assist Tabernacle in a discernment process over the course of four to six months. 126 voted “yes” and 13 voted “no.” Because it was a four-day weekend for the city schools and Winter Break for the county schools, several were unable to be present for the conference. Many of these, however, expressed passion about the church affirming the recommendation. Deacon Chairperson Kim Jones did an outstanding job in making the presentation. She is to be commended for her leadership. Moderator Phil Wilkins guided the meeting with skill, making sure everyone who had a question or comment was heard. The meeting was not rushed. The discussion was considerate and thoughtful, which is Christ-like. We were having “holy conversations”, and the church needs to have more of these. Tabernacle is a very diverse congregation. While diversity, according to the Scriptures, is a strength, unless it is harnessed by the Holy Spirit, it can be a weakness, even a deterrent to ministry. Many opinions abound, and I’ve heard most of them, including mine! As I’ve reminded us previously, there is nothing wrong with an opinion. But as a Jewish rabbi noted, “Everyone is entitled to his

or her opinion, but no one is entitled to be wrong in the facts.” Fact and opinion are not always the same. During the course of the conversation on Sunday afternoon, I was asked to share my thoughts and did. I spoke about each of us having an opinion as to what the next step for Tabernacle is to be. I challenged us to heed the observation located in Proverbs 18:2, which states “A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing personal opinion” (NRSV). Let us always long for understanding and avoid playing the fool. I confess that I’ve played the fool many times. All have at one time or another. The Committee on Committees is receiving nominations from the membership for candidates for the Leadership Team, which will consist of twelve to fifteen people. Janet Cleland and I will serve as ex officio members. This team will be a working group. It will require a significant commitment of time and a number of meetings. Members of the Committee on Committees include Dick Slate, Chairperson; Kay Bullock, Tillie Denney, Neal Herndon, Elaine Holcombe, and Dwain Mathis. Pray for the committee as it works through many names, praying over them as it seeks the Lord’s guidance. The committee will recommend the Leadership Team to the church for its approval or rejection in a Called Church

Kubernesis Take Up Our Crosses Just as Christ endured the cross on the path to Golgotha “for the joy set before Him” (Hebrews 12:2), so He calls us to take up our crosses and follow Him – willingly, joyfully, and triumphantly. Acceptance of the cross indicates that we are willing to serve in Christ’s name to a hurting world. We are willing to do His work for His glory, willing to minister to His people through His Spirit, even willing to lay down our lives for our brothers.

Conference. Two groups have been faithfully involved in this process. One is the Deacon Administrative Committee (DAC) elected by the Deacon Body. These include Brad Smith, Chairperson; Cindy Bagwell, Jim Blevins, Houston Cole, Joey Collins, Steven Holmes, Daniel Jackson, Scottie Jennings, Kim Jones, and Tim Warren. The other is the Deacon Officers: Chairperson Kim Jones, Vice-Chairperson Tim Warren, Secretary Jeanie Oliver, DAC Chairperson Brad Smith, and DAC Secretary Joey Collins. I list these so if you have any questions, you may contact one or all of these good men and women who, perhaps, will provide clarity for you. This is an exciting time in Tabernacle as she looks for a common goal, a common vision through the power of the Holy Spirit and the careful ministry of Bill Wilson and the Center for Congregational Health. I look forward to this process of discernment with you. Through it all, let us remember to think like Christ, speak like Christ, and act like Christ. That is our challenge during Lent. That really is our challenge for life. Think, speak, and act like Christ. It is possible. Yes. It is possible to think, speak, and act like Christ. So be it. Jimmy Gentry
