What Is Diversity?

By Nia Mitchell and Kimberly Cuaya Tello Diversity is the differences between others. Everyone has different opinions about people’s differences, but it is better if people only say the positive things about them. Here are some things you can go to accept others: *Keep the negative thoughts to yourself. *Get to know someone with a different background. *Respect religious holidays. *Hang out with people with different likes and dislikes. *Try not to say anything that could offend somebody in some way. Disrespecting people because of their different background, the way they look, or if they are rich or not is never the right way to treat each other.

Gay Marriage Is Okay, But So Is Discrimination?

By Jordan Milan and Addie Sutton In 2015, gay marriage became legal in all 50 states, but discrimination is still legal in 38. Some people think that because LGBT marriage is legal in all states that the problem is solved, but it’s not. The states who allow discrimination are the colored states on this map. The states that don’t allow discrimination at all are the gray. Yes, 38 states is more than half of the country, but every color means different things. For example, the dark blue in Indiana means you can discriminate while on your job or can be discriminated by co-workers, bosses, and customers. The dark purple means sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination is prohibited in public and private employment. Some state’s government officials say they are working on getting the laws passed to prevent discrimination, but it will be a long time until all states are discrimination free. There are only twelve states that have laws against this problem. This means that 76 percent of America is okay with hating and being mean to LGBT citizens. 3

Jane Elliott’s ‘Brown Eyes Blue Eyes’ Experiment

By Alyssa Trotter A 3rd grade teacher in Iowa named Jane Elliott performed an experiment with her students the day after Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated. The experiment was called the “brown eyes blue eyes” experiment. The experiment’s purpose was to show the students how bad it felt to be treated differently and to show them what people of color had to go through. Elliott told the children that those who had blue eyes were better in all ways, and that they would get perks such as getting extra recess. She told them that the brown-eyed kids had to wear collars so they would know who was who, and the brown eyed people could not interact with the blue eyed people. The day went on as it normally would, except the kids with brown eyes were mistreated, and the kids with blue eyes were treated well. Throughout the day there were lots of complaints from the brown-eyed group. Some of them expressed how they felt left out when they were not allowed to play with their blue-eyed friends, while others said that they were being teased by the blue-eyed group. The next day, Elliott told the kids that she made a mistake; the brown-eyed people were better. The roles were switched, and the brown-eyed people got all of the perks. The same thing happened, the blue-eyed people complained, and the brown-eyed people went about their day feeling good about themselves. At the end of the experiment, Elliott asked the children if they liked how they felt when they were told that they weren’t as good as the others, and they all answered no. She then went on to ask them if they should judge people based on their skin or eye color, and they answered no. Jane Elliott also did her experiment with adults. She was invited onto the Oprah Winfrey show, where she shared that she had very negative reactions from adults such as verbal threats, and even pulling out knives. Elliott can hardly believe that racism is still a problem 50 years later, and says, “We need to fix this.” (Click here to see brown eyes blue eyes experiment.)

All Aboard The Very First All-Female SpaceWalk

By Alyssa Trotter Two female astronauts Anne McClain and Christiana Koch are scheduled to carry on the first ever all-female space walk on March 29th. Back on Earth, they will be helped by Kristen Facciol, a Canadian Space Agency flight controller. She will be controlling the console at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. On March 1st, Facciol tweeted, “I just found out that I’ll be on console providing support for the FIRST ALL FEMALE SPACEWALK with @AstroAnnimal and @Astro_ Christina and I can not contain my excitement!!!! #WomenInSTEM #WomenInEngineering #WomenInSpace.” Mary Lawrence will be the Lead Flight Director, and Jackie Kagey is the lead EVA (Extravehicular activity). According to the NASA website, the spacewalk is supposed to last seven hours. McClain and Koch were both in the 2013 astronaut class that was half way made of women. They also both came from 6,100 applications, the second largest amount of applications NASA has ever gotten. If the women succeed as planned, they will make history. Spacewalks can happen for many different reasons. They can be held for working outside of the spacecraft, experimenting or testing equipment, or fixing damaged satellites or other equipment.

Tesla Raises Prices

By Maria Ramirez Tesla is deciding to reverse closing stores and instead going to keep them open and raise the prices 3% worldwide. Tesla said that they will start to raise the price on March 18th, 2019, but they would leave the $35,000 model 3 the same price, and the more expensive models the prices would be raised. They chose to keep tesla open after a long two-weeks of evaluation of every single Tesla retail location. About 10% of Tesla’s stores have been closed down recently. On February 28th, 2019 Tesla announced that it would be closing its stores and moving to online sales only. Marking all sales online would allow Tesla to lower the price by 6%, and the company would be able to sell the $35,000 Model 3. Tesla also said that there would be a small amount of cars available to those who want to buy a car immediately. Tesla has eventually decided to keep the stores open as they continue to do the evaluation over the course of several months.

Amazon New Waste Strategy

By Maria Ramirez Amazon wants to start reducing its carbon footprint and give customers more control over when their packages arrive. Amazon found a way to do both in one new program. All Amazon prime members in the United States will be able to control when they want their packages received. After a customer enrolls in the “Amazon Day” service, Amazon will hold everything they ordered throughout the week and deliver the items the day they picked. The new feature could persuade customers who place multiple orders a week to receive them all together. Amazon said that could help reduce the amount of shipping materials, and it can reduce the number of stops Amazon needs to make. This is supposed to make the process go more smoothly. Amazon wants half of their shipments to be carbon neutral by 2030 and say that it’s Amazon Day will help make it possible. This delivery option has already eliminated tens of thousands of boxes since testing it back in November. The company has also introduce frustration free packaging to produce less waste and they invested in solar and wind farms. Amazon Day will appear as a delivery option for Amazon’s online stores, and customers can still select another delivery option for packages. Additional items can be added on you Amazon Day shipments 2 days before your packages get shipped.

Don’t forget to order your yearbook before they run out and before the price increases May 1st! 11

The Danger About The Zombie-Deer Epidemic

By Nathan Bray and Christian Kalal CWD or Chronic Wasting Disease affects moose, elk, and deer in certain areas of the United States and parts of Canada. Officials at WHO (World Health Organisation) are telling people to avoid eating infected venison due to the fear that it may spread to humans. This disease affects the brain, spine and other important organs in the bodies of the decaying deer. This disease got its name from the aggressive behavior that the deer affected by it exhibit. Some examples are aggressive behavior, losing coordination, and wasting away. Some people are afraid that it might spread to humans, due to the recent discovery that if monkeys eat tainted meat they can succumb to the disease as well. Even though there is no solid evidence that the disease can even affect humans. If you eat venison should still be weary of the venison produced by the infected deer.

Colossal Squid And Sperm Whale Interactions By Jordan Milan and Addison Sutton

In 1925 the colossal squid was found in the antarctic waters near New Zealand, but that wasn’t the only discovery they made. They found out that these creatures have been attacking whales for years. The colossal squid is a 42 ft long deep sea creature. It has eyes the size of your average dinner plate, and razor sharp, knife-like teeth on its tentacles. They are known to fight other animals, because of the dark abyss they live in. These squids are known to live in the Scary Zone of the ocean which is 2,250 meters deep. The ocean is pitch black so no sunlight can be reached. Since it is so dark it fights almost any creature it sees. One of the animals it fights often is the sperm whale. Sperm whale is a big whale that can dive to the same depth as the squid. They have big teeth and a long body that measures up to 40 ft long. They are unable to see and be seen at these depths. When the Sperm Whale goes deep, they are in search of food. When whales go to snatch a bite, they twist their bodies, but the bigger squids, or colossal squids, know how to fight back. The squid leaves scratch marks and circular sucker marks on the whale’s body and head. When the whale first got breached and washed up on shore people realized that they have been fighting with the colossal squids for years. They knew that they have both been around in the same area of the ocean, but this was the first time they have seen the whale attacked so badly.

A Pig Becomes A Pigcasso By Aaliyah Ward and Valeria Hernandez

From being almost killed at 6 months old, this little pig becomes an artist this pig has sold many paintings for thousands of dollars. She was rescued in 2016 from an industrialized hog farming facility by Joanne Lefson and now lives at a farm just outside of South Africa. How this pig became “Pigcasso” was Joanne visited the shelter a few days earlier. She brought with her some items for the pig to play with and the pig went to grab the paint brush. At that moment she was painting away. At first Joanne sells her paintings around $800 to buyers in New york. As she was making more paintings and grew more famous, Pigcasso now sells her artworks for around $1,600 to support the sanctuary.

A Woman gets attacked by a Jaguar while she was taking a picture of it

By Ronnda Smith At Arizona Zoo a woman got attacked by a jaguar while she tried to take a selfie with the animal. She was near the fence going to snap a picture of the animal when suddenly the jaguar had attacked her. She was next his enclosure so the jaguar was able to attack her. There was one witness, Adam Wilkerson a zoo visitor, who said that he heard a girl screaming, “Help! Help!” Then he ran over there. He said that he had seen the woman up on the cage and the jaguar had put his claws outside the cage into her flesh. Wilkerson’s mom had distracted the jaguar by putting a water bottle in the cage, right near the animal . Then the jaguar had let go of the woman because the claws got on her sweater that moment he grabbed her while the jaguar had went for the water bottle. She went to the hospital for injuries that were a non threatening life according to a reporter. 14

Animals Can Survive Without Being Able To Sleep

By Shanelin Molina Many of the humans recognize that sleeping is very necessary. Many people try to stay awake even if they are not asleep for a night . Few creatures can survive without sleeping for a long time, a study in the journal “Science Advances” looked at how long the flies slept and found that many flies do not sleep much. They watched that 6% of female flies slept less than 72 minutes a day. Many animals can survive with very little sleep of what is expected. A study in 2016 put a tiny device in frigatebirds in the Galapagos Islands to see the electrical function of the brain of the animals. Those monitors investigated sleeping birds while flying over the ocean. Sleeping in flight is common for some types of birds. Swifts can fly for 10 months without landing, although they say that scientists still don’t have many proof of that.

Fat Rat Stuck in Manhole Cover Rescued by Firefighters

By Arizbeth Hernandez and Jessica Sosa In Germany on a weekend a fat rat was rescued by firefighters and animal rescuers after being stuck in a manhole cover. Rescuers say the rat got stuck because she gained weight and got fat during the winter. This rat got rescued by firefighters and rescuers using a pole that had a loop to keep the rat in place while they raised the cover to release the rat. The rat was finally released from the manhole cover. Most rats can fit in any small space because their bodies are long, so they have the ability to squeeze in to any hole. Rats can even detect if they can fit in a hole by using their whiskers, but this rat maybe didn’t estimate correctly if he was able to fit partially through. At the end, people started questioning why would they free the rat and rescue it if it’s one of the animals that people don’t like the most. One of the rescuers responded saying, “Even animals that are hated by many deserve respect.” 15

Miniature Deep Space Satellites Go Silent

By Miles Robinson Two MarCO satellites, named EVE and WALL-E have stopped transmitting signals back to NASA. The reason the two satellites fell silent is still unknown although there are theories. The two satellites were launched into space last year by NASA. The MarCO satellites are modified CubeSats, small probes about the size of a cereal box. CubeSats usually only orbit Earth but NASA wanted to test whether or not the small probes could work in interstellar space. The satellites’ original mission was to test whether or not the small probes could last outside of Earth’s orbit. The two satellites accompanied the InSight lander, a Martian probe, to Mars and report back what happened during the lander’s descent towards the surface. After the lander had landed the probes began orbiting the sun, and in late December and early January NASA lost contact with the probes within a week of each other. The MarCO team is still unsure as to why the probes stopped transmitting signals. One theory is that deep space cosmic rays knocked both the satellites out. Another is that the two probes got too far away from the sun, which is their main source of power. The mission that NASA sent the probes on to test their capability was a success despite the losses and NASA is planning on using more of these MarCO probes for different missions.

Oldest Relative Frog in North America Could’ve Been the Size of Your Pinky

By Jessica Sosa and Arizbeth Hernandez In the north part of Arizona the fossils of the oldest frog relative was found from the Triassic period 216 million years ago. This creature is so small it could fit at the end of your pinky. This frog fossil was found next to a crocodile-like phytosaurs who, scientist say, was about to be eaten it but missed. This animal is nicknamed Chinle and still doesn’t have a scientific name because researchers say they still don’t find the rest of the body and the fossil they found was the hip bones. They found more fossils similar to Chinle, but they haven’t found skulls. Chinle is relative of frogs we see today, but it’s not a direct relative of it but yes distant. This discovery of the frogs fossil may be sign of information to come of the triassic period. Chinle is not the oldest frog, for Madagascar and Poland have the oldest frog who was found from the Triassic period over 250 million year ago. It’s believed that Chinle frogs lived near the equator during Pangea, but it was found in Arizona because Arizona was not located where it is millions years ago. Scientist want to find more fossils similar to Chinle so they can learn more about small animals in the past. They hope to use these fossils to uncover the truth of animals like lizards, turtles, salamanders, and mammals.

How To Preserve Evidence On The Moon

By Janny Alvarez A group of historians are thinking about the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, they will try to convince the United Nations to help protect Neil Armstrong’s footprint on the Moon made on July 20th, 1969. Some of Neil’s footprints are still up there since there is no wind to blow them away. In addition, the American Flag was placed during the Apollo 11 mission by Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong; it was placed 7 inches into the ground. Michelle Hanlon, a space law expert at the University of Mississippi brought the problem to the United Nations. She thinks it’s time for the subject to resurface about protecting the precious history of the moon and the artifacts on it. Hanlon told the group that Apollo 11’s landing site is a historical artifact. She says it’s as precious as Egypt’s pyramids and the Great Wall Of China, she also states that any nation can choose a place within its territory to be added to the World Heritage SItes List. The huge problem with that is according to the Outer Space Treaty “no nation can can claim sovereignty over anything that’s in outer space.”

Saving Reef In A Out Of This World Way By Devin Ferguson

Our very important coral reefs are dying from bleaching. These problems on our coast lines are growing more and more troublesome not only for the fish and ecosystem inbedded in the coral reefs but for humans too. The coral reefs do more than house and protect fish from predators it also protects our coastline very harmful wave, tropical storms, and erosion. To help scientist from AIMS (The Australian Institute of Marine Science) has come up with a project that monitors reef all across the world this is a satellite. The satellites help monitor bleaching and other conditions that may harm or kill coral reefs. These scientist have sent the satellites to north and south poles where the Earth spin and the satellites take thousands of pictures showing 150,000 coral reefs a day. Until now these scientist would have to individually visit, study, and help stop bleaching coral reefs which can cost lots of money. Bleaching is a problem and causes pretty colourful coral reef to turn white and grey and lose life. Bleaching is cause by mass amounts of heat and warm water causes the algae in the coral to leave and cause the whiting.

“Zombie” star

By Devin Ferguson The universe is endless and has many stars but one star iPTF14hls or the might be a zombie. Scientist in the UK where baffled by this star that should only explode and turn into supernova like a usal star. But this star is very different the star called iPTF14hls has exploded at least 2 times but has not turned into a supernova. A supernova is a star that suddenly increases greatly in brightness because of a explosion that lets out most of its mass. This star was found in 1954 and was study until and after the first time it ever exploded. The star exploding multiple times could be very catostapic for the star, Daniel Kasen of University of California said, “That would cause the star to go violently unstable, and undergo repeated bright eruptions over multiple years.” At least 100 times the mass of our sun this could actually explode a few times before actually dying. The flashes seen before the star dies is just the star slowly getting rid of built up energy and getting ready to die. 19

Would You Want Live In A Space Hotel?

By Tylen Cunningham and David Rogers This March, there was something special to upgrade the travel world; space hotel will help us explore the world a lot more without having to stay on the ground and look through a telescope. This announcement was made by Aurora space station this april during the space 2.0 conference in San Jose. This trip is not cheap it’s price right now is at $9.5m and isn’t going down till 2022, but the trip will be good Guests with the money are able to sore 200 miles above the earth’s surface. “Part of our experience is to give people the taste of the life of a professional astronaut,” says Frank Bunger, founder and chief executive officer of Orion Span, the firm which is behind Aurora Station.” He also said that most guest will be looking at the world from the window, or calling people they know from space, and if people start getting bored they have a ‘holodeck,’ a virtual reality experience. Another professor named Roberts A. Geolich of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University says,” at the moment space tourism is a field where reality, hoaxes, and science fiction are mixed up in such a way that it makes difficult to distinguish between reality and wishes.” Even though this may sound easy it is also a challenge for the people making Aurora Station. There are many challenges they must face to make a successful space hotel, like exposure to zero-g weakens the bones and changes the structure of the eyeball which could affect sight. Or the fact that even though space vehicles are insulated, they could still bring in cosmic radiation. Geolich says that a space station needs a safe operation of the spaceships, an environmentally friendly operation, and a economically profitable operation. Space tourism has been a thing back in 2001 when American Dennis Tito paid the Russian Space Agency a reported $20 million for a seven day visit to the ISS. Now by 2027 there will be a hotel specifically built and designed for the tourism of space. 20

Asteroids Are Much Harder To Destroy Than Originally Thought

By Miles Robinson There have already been numerous attempts to create an asteroid destruction system to save the Earth (and humanity) from being destroyed by asteroids, but new studies from scientists at Johns Hopkins simulated how an asteroid collision might happen, and how an asteroid would fracture. Researches hope that the discoveries can help prepare humanity for a catastrophic event so we can improve the ways we might be able to deflect or destroy a potentially deadly asteroid. Any large asteroid flying towards at the typical 30 kilometers per second, or 108,000 kilometers per hour, could be destructive. An asteroid, depending on the size, can cause localized destruction all the way up to global catastrophe. This begs the question, what can we do to avoid disaster? Many ideas have been put forward, although none have gotten past the drawing board. The problem humans face now is that asteroids are harder to destroy than first thought. Researchers first thought that the massive city-sized asteroids might work against them, since anything of that size should break apart more easily. New research shows that this isn’t the case. New simulations that allowed for more accurate readings came out with different results than simulations done before it. The simulation showed that the asteroid did break apart, but the gravity of the asteroid’s core pulled the rocks that cracked off back in, essentially keeping its velocity without much change to size.

The NHL Maybe the Future of Marijuana in Pro Sports

By Brooks Winter In 2018, Canada became the largest country in the world to completely legalize marijuana, which accounts for about 9 out of 123 of the team's that play in the NHL, NBA, NFL, and MLB (0.07%). The NHL doesn’t punish anyone for marijuana unless they have “abnormally high levels” of marijuana in their system, if they did, that’s when they would flag the player. If they do this, the player has a choice to enter the SABH (Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health) or get suspended and fined. Although, if he enters the SABH, all suspensions and fines will be levied so the player doesn’t receive them when they return to playing, The NHL is so different than other sports leagues across the nation. In the NBA, a first positive test results in the player entering the marijuana program. If there is a second positive test, they are fined $25,000. If there is a third infraction they get a five game suspension and five more games for each ensuing infraction. In the MLB, they are subject to a treatment plan and fined $35,000 for just one positive test. Finally in the NFL, a positive test means a referral to the substance abuse program. A second test results in a fine of two game checks. A third positive test results in a fine of four game checks. A fourth violation issues a fine of four game checks. A fifth violation results in a ten game suspension and a sixth violation issues a one-year banishment.

Possible Google Game Console In Near Future By Nathan Bray and Christian Kalal

Some evidence is leading toward a Google game console. Not much is known about the specs of the console, but they have filed a patent for a new controller, as well as calling a new project “Project Yeti.” They have also sent out a tweet stating that they would like to take up a future in gaming. This seems like strong evidence towards them creating a brand new game console. The console is most likely being made possible by Google’s new vice president, Jade Raymond. She produced games like Assassin’s Creed and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell. The image to the right is not the patent for the actual controller. That isn’t how patents work, as this is just a patent for the speaker button design as seen between the two sticks in the 3D model. This is not the final product for the controller so don’t get it confused.

Video Game Giant Apex Legends Reaches 50 Million Players Globally in One Month

By Janny Alvarez Apex Legends developed by the enormous Respawn Entertainment has now currently reached over 50 million player globally in the span of one month this is more players than Fortnite had in 16 weeks of it’s official release. Fortnite first launched with the Save The World gamemode it was like a campaign, but it wasn’t multiplayer just yet Epic still had bugs and had to be able to maintain the servers for long periods of time and with the millions of players playing on different servers it was hard to maintain but it pulled through. The Battle Royal of Fortnite first came late September 2017 and since it has gained millions of players in less than a year of release. Since Apex Legends release it has gained a massive growth rate within only 8 hours Apex had 1 million players already that’s more than Fortnite had in 2 weeks of release by the end of the day Apex had gotten 2.5 million players in 24 hours alone. Many Battle Royal fans compare Apex to Fortnite because of their numbers, but it took Fortnite several months to reach the 45 million mark, it took Apex 1 month to reach that astonishing accomplishment in the span of 1 month. It’s important to realize that Fortnite dominated the charts mostly because of its availability on PS4, XBOX 1, Windows PC, and Nintendo Switch. It also has Cross-Platform meaning other consoles can now play with each other no matter the console. Apex grew because everyone wanted something new and Respawn Entertainment delivered with their free to play battle royale game.

Crazy Theories About The Murder Of Jonbenet Ramsey

By Evelin Ayala Moran Do you guys know what theories are? It’s a bunch of ideas that make you explain what happened. There has been crazy theories about murders, celebrities, the haunting, etc. One murder has caught the people’s attention: the murder of Jonbenet Ramsey. Many theories have come to this murder; some might be weird, some might be understandable and interesting. Jonbenet Ramsey was a girl, age of 6 years old, and she was in many pageants. One night, after Christmas, she was found dead in her basement inside her home! At first, according to Jonbenet’s parents, she went missing. They searched all over the house, until her dad found her in the basement, dead. There was a note before they found her dead, asking them for money, or they’ll kill Jonbenet. They started investigating everywhere, mostly in their house, since she was killed inside. The only evidence was the note and Ramsey’s body. The body had signs of strangling and a blow to the back of her head. No one knows who the killer is. One theory that could have been possible was the parents. They believe maybe Patsy Ramsey, the mother, accidently killed her by beating her up, since she would beat Jonbenet for peeing the bed or misbehavior. Another one is the father, John Bennett Ramsey, had covered the evidence by covering her up with the blanket. They took DNA evidence so they were cleared from everything. People say her brother might have killed her accidently. Since there was a blow in the back of her head right? Well, they found a flashlight in the kitchen. That’s where the siblings would eat pineapple before bed. Later on they found out that Jonbenet did eat pineapple after all. There's more theories about her murder. There’s even one about Katy Perry turning out to be her! And ever since, her murder has been remained unsolved. 35

The End Of An Great Era By Karrington Shelton

Tyler Perry released a movie called ¨A Madea Family Funeral¨ it hit theaters Friday. For the Tyler Perry and Madea fans this was really sad because this was the end of the road for movies with Madea in them. This was a big shock because she was such a big role in almost 11 of the movies that Tyler Perry produced. Tyler Perry made Madea based off of his mom that passed away and off of his aunt both put together. He said that he wanted to let her go because “I´ll be 50 this year and I’m just at a place in my life where this next 50 I want to do things differently. This character has been amazing. So many people have loved her. It’s been a great franchise,” as stated from CNN. Tyler Perrys first play that he made in 1999 ¨I Can Do Bad All By Myself¨ starred Madea and since then she´s been a big role in a lot of the rest of the movies he

made. She made her screen debut in 2005 by starring in ¨Diary Of A Mad Black Woman¨ Perry´s mother even told him not to stop playing this character. She told him, ¨She told me whatever you do, don’t stop playing this character. She loved Madea. My mother, even though we look alike, she was a much more beautiful version of this character for sure,” also according to CNN. Tyler Perry´s 19 films have earned over $864 million altogether. Although this is the end of Madea, this isn´t the end for Tyler as well. He´ll still be making movies. He told CNN that he feels like that Madea just ran out of things to say in his point of view, so he just let her go. But the good part about this is that he’s not finished making movies. So he might bring her back later down the line, and it definitly isnt a goodbye. It’s more of a see you later until he desides to bring her back.
