Conga - Sicamous to Kaslo After a fabulous time talking to veterans in JC, Stephanie’s partner took one look at my Kamloops and sharing stories about my ride, it boots when I got there and he decided to was time once again the saddle up and head take me to Kreator Customs and buy me out. Destination? Joe Schmucks in Sicamous! a new pair for my birthday - I was blown away by the generosity. We headed over to I love this place. Not only are the owners, Kreator’s where I found a great selection of Mark and Wendy Pearson riders, but their Milwaukee Boots, I found a pair that fit and staff is so friendly, the rooms are enormous accommodated my braces. and the hospitality is amongst the finest in the region. After our shopping spree we went over to the ANAVETS club, but they were closed for the I was treated to a room with a hot tub – my long weekend and so we had a coffee and lord what a treat – I sat in that thing for about Continued on Next Page an hour and as my muscles unknotted and I began to relax, I was truly able to take in the stunning array of stars that were out.

Breakfast was awesome and I was able to visit with Rocky and a few of the other local riders and soon it was time to head for Kelowna to see Stephanie, our layout artist.

The Busted Knuckle Chronicles some soup at a Timmy’s and then it was time to say goodbye – me to head to Christina Lake and them back to their resort. As I rode towards Beaverdell the countryside began to change. I haven’t ridden this highway in a long time and forgot how absolutely gorgeous it is. When I hit Beaverdell, there were a ton of bikes parked outside of an older building that is right across the street from where the old Beaverdell Hotel once stood (it burnt down a few years back.) The building is being renovated to be turned into a pub and while alcoholic beverages were not available, pop and water were. There were a dozen riders in there and Rita was passed around for photos and hug ops! I rode out with a half dozen of the locals who were heading to Rock Creek and then back to Kelowna – we rode through the twisting winding roads, all of us had shit eating grins on our faces – you couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day. Sun, no wind to speak of and wonderful roads to ride… At Rock Creek we stopped for fuel, shared some hugs and said our good byes. The next stretch for me was through Grande Forks and into Christina Lake and my room at the Christina Lake Village. Paula and Scott had my room ready when I got in and I took advantage of the pool to cool down.

Page 2 July 25, 2013 This place is special. It is run by this young family – all four kids, even the littlest has a job to do. They have tenting, motorhome camping, the motel, laundry facilities and a fabulous restaurant and grocery store. They are agents for Purolator and U-Haul. Continued on Next Page

After a hearty supper in their restaurant, I went to my room and proceeded to get some work done. The next morning dawned hotter than the day before. Stifling hot – 36 degrees with the threat of thunderstorms. Mother nature was putting on a lightning show and there were thunderheads all around us.

One part of the motel

RV Camping area

I was supposed to head to Toad Rock but opted to stay another night and just worked. The rain that was threatening never materialized and at midnight, I watched the fireworks with a bunch of young people who were camped out at the Christina Lake Village. For about a half hour all you could hear were the oohs and ahhs as we watched the brilliant colors explode in the air over the lake. In the morning, Kelly – a rider from Vancouver, and I had breakfast and a gab. He told me how he had just gotten back into riding after a 20 year hiatus, we shared some road trip ideas and then he went off towards Invermere.

The Lounge The ride to Toad Rock was spent under a stifling hot sun, but I enjoyed every second of it. Sadly I discovered that the Sirdar Pub was closed down and that Co Owner Rob Kane had been in a bad crash with his pick up. I am unclear on all of the details, but suffice it to say I found it sad that one of the best food stops on the highway to the Balfour Ferry was closed.

Inside the restaurant

I opted to go to Toad Rock via Nelson, stopping in Salmo and Fruitvale. I had a coffee with the Infamous Bean and a great visit with Randy and Sheri at Leather and

We set a plan for a ride in Nelson with the West Kootenay Road Runners and then I stopped into Toad Rock for a visit with Mother Mary! It was good to see her and Grant along with Gerry from Sylvan Lake and a few riders from Saskatchewan – the remnants of the July 1st weekend at Toad Rock – it’s not an event anymore, just a gathering of campers that enjoy this place and come together to share their pride in being Canadian! Apparently I missed a really good time. Continued on Next Page

My stop for the evening was to be the Wing Creek Resort just outside of Kaslo, so off I went.

PJ Grant and their staff with Rita

I met up with Debra from Wing Creek at the Kaslo Hotel as the Rosewood CafÊ was closed. I left my bike parked in front of the Rosewood on the off chance that Grant and PJ would see it and give me a call‌what a great thing to have done as call they did!

This place is a bit of heaven, the ride into it was treacherous at night – tons of twists and curves, but as I would find out the next morning when I left, it’s wonderful to ride in daylight.

The view from the deck of the Kaslo Hotel

The cabin I had was one of 4 that are the same size. There is a fifth cabin that is 100 square feet bigger than the others. They all have full kitchens with fridges that are stocked with beer and wine, and on the counter there are snacks available that you can purchase and the prices are the same as most grocery stores. The living room area boasts no TV but gorgeous miniature fireplaces instead. The bedroom is expansive and the bathrooms are well appointed. Continued on Next Page

I settled in for the night and was up at the crack of dawn and thoroughly enjoyed having my coffee out on the deck. The view from my cabin was stunning. And all the cabins are separated by trees that make you feel like you are the only one out there. There are BBQ areas for the use of the cabins and the largest cabin has it’s own BBQ.

A monster Lemon Meringue Pie

At 7 am Debra came and got me and we went for a tour of the facilities. There is a huge meeting room building that has tons of storage underneath and offers protected parking in the case of inclement weather. The place is filled with amazing art from local artists…this is also the only place you can get Internet access… In the office there is a wonderful spa with two massage beds and Debra is a registered massage and Reiki therapist.

Freshly made French Bread

The continental breakfast offered up fruit, farm made local jams and local breads etc. Debra’s partner, Kevin, took me in the electric golf cart down to the rental home they have. 2,300 square feet of absolutely gorgeous timber framed home with views of the lake and mountains that make you feel like you are in the heavens.

My breakfast

We then went down to the lakefront – that sadly was covered in water from all of the flooding but one could tell how lovely it all is. There are a number of intimate spots set out for privacy and a communal area for larger gatherings. Continued on Next Page

There are also canoes that you can take out on the lake. The place is just stunning and if you are looking for an intimate place to reconnect with your spouse or to celebrate a wedding or some other milestone you need to consider Wing Creek Resort! It was with a torn heart that I left the resort and rode the 7 or so kilometers into Kaslo where I had breakfast at the Rosewood Cafe… now I know Grant is a Red Seal Chef and that he has just overcome a battle with prostate cancer but I was not prepared for the feast that was given to me for breakfast. Wing Creek

A homemade tortilla ladened with pulled pork and sweet picled cabbage, fajita chicken with a fruit salsa, a poached egg with hollandaise sauce and a bowl of fresh fruit. The flavor combinations burst in my mouth and the presentation was so eye appealing and the best part? The cost -$12. The Rosewood is filled with family heirlooms and treasures and is every bit as appealing as the gourmet food on a workingman’s budget. The service was impeccable, the place is warm and inviting…if you ever find yourself in the Kaslo region I highly recommend the Rosewood Café and can pretty much guarantee that you will walk away feeling like you just ate in a 5 star restaurant!

The Busted Knuckle Chronicles For those of you who might not be aware, Vulcan is, in fact, a real place in Alberta. It’s a town with a great sense of humor, a wonderful community spirit, and like many (all?) rural communities, it has a great big heart. And yes, it DOES have a giant spaceship on the edge of town.

Thunder Lizard Lips Off & AB Events

But my favourite is always the third weekend in July. That’s when they hold the Show ‘n’ Shine and Smash-Up Derby. This year, they were putting their hard work to very good use, raising funds to assist the folks from nearby High River who have been affected by the flooding there, and a great job they were doing. Sponsored by the Vulcan County Cruisers car club, this event has been held annually for 27 years, and shows no sign of slowing down. Cars, bikes, trucks and even mini cars and tractors are welcomed in the show, and this is some grassroots stuff. 99% of what you see on display are labours of love. There aren’t many “so, I gave this guy fifty grand and this is what I got back” stories. Instead, you hear lots of stories about searching half the world for the right trim for the windshield on a ’46 Austin, or trying to figure out what electric motor from the spare parts pile will automate the doors on a ’47 Merc. These people don’t just own the iron.. they built it themselves, with their buddies, farming out as little as they can manage, and the love shows in the results. As varied as they were beautiful, there’s a lot of pride poured into these vehicles. Coming from Coaldale, the Crowsnest Pass, even Edmonton and into B.C., this small, quietly advertised event is one helluva good time.

Every year, several very fun things happen in Vulcan. They have a great summer fair and festival they call Spock days, which attracts Star Trek fans from all over, generally is attended by thousands, and even sports stars This old Merc here was quite a show stopper, from the television shows as guests. They’ll and crowd favourite on the day. The older throw a rodeo, several parties, as well as parades and all that kind of goodness. This is gent that owns it spent 3 years on restoring and fabrication, and only let other generally regarded as one of the best get-togethers of the summer by those around folks do the paint and upholstery. It was a radical custom and truly original! the area, and I agree.

it was very cool that the Best Motorcycle went to a first timer, a great young lady with a very brilliantly blue Vulcan Drifter.

It’s pretty rare you get to see a really nice ’47 Shovelhead, but it’s even more rare that it’s found in the back of a ’46 International pickup. This was a beauty machine.

The judging for this one is very cool, if you ask me. Rather than a panel of judges, or just doing people’s choice, it’s the people who enter in the contest who do the judging. Every single owner checks out every other vehicle, and they choose the category winners. With that being said, we all thought

We cruised out there Saturday at lunchtime and the weather was fantastic. As we cruised 9 Kawaskai Vulcans into town, we were greeted by waves, and cheers, and huge grins; these folks aren’t anti-biker, that’s for sure. Wentland around the halfway mark.

Under a burning sun and blistering temperatures that hovered around 30ºC, Brett Metcalfe won both MX1 motos at Round 5 of the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals at Gopher Dunes in Courtland, Ontario on Sunday.

In the MX2 class, RTR Performance Honda’s Topher Ingalls rose to the occasion to nail down his first win of the season. The California native did it with style by nailing down the holeshot of both motos. The first moto saw an on-fire Ingalls lead wire to wire, finishing with a huge gap on second place. In moto two he settled for second after losing the lead to KTM-mounted Jesse

unable to take the momentum all the way to the finish line. He led the first moto until around the halfway mark, which is when Metcalfe, who started around third, passed him. Once at the head of the pack Metcalfe poured on the gas and Medaglia was never able to challenge him and reclaim the lead. In the second moto, Medaglia lost the lead on the second lap to American guest rider Mike Sottile. The Real Deal Honda rider then led the freight train until about the three quarter mark, when Metcalfe, who suffered a back of the pack start, came calling and made a successful pass to take the win.

The Australian, who has now recorded four consecutive wins, had his work cut out for him in both motos on the heavy duty sand track of Gopher Dunes. Although the Monster Energy/Parts Canada/Leading Edge Kawasaki star took control of moto one by the halfway mark, it took him until the threequarter mark to take the lead of moto two.

Topher Ingalls (13) took home $800 with two holeshots thanks to the Royal Distributing Triple Crown, and claimed his first National win.

Sottile would lose three more positions before the checkered flag flew. He ended the day with fifth overall on the strength of 6-4 motos. Machine Racing Yamaha’s Kyle Keast, who Continued on Next Page

With a schedule break in the Lucas Oil AMA National Championship, Wentland took the opportunity to journey up to Canada and compete as a guest rider. The Minnesota native did more than raise a few eyebrows by snaring an impressive second overall on the strength of 3-1 motos. Red Bull/Fox/Royal Distributing/KTM’s Tyler Medaglia had a relatively good day at Gopher Dunes, snaring both holeshots and claiming third overall on the strength of 2-5 motos. Medaglia’s results also moved him back into second place in the current points standings. Although Medaglia got super starts, he was

Maier, proved to be on top of his game in the first moto, taking a third place finish at the checkered. In the second moto he was taken out in turn one; his bike was too damaged to continue the race and his day was unfortunately over.

Red Bull/Fox/Royal Distributing/KTM’s Dusty Klatt, returning to action for the first time this year, rode tentatively to claim ninth overall on the strength of 11-11 motos. KTM’s Liam O’Farrell, who also missed the western rounds, scored a noteworthy sixth overall on the strength of 9-6 motos.

Machine Racing Yamaha’s Kyle Keast, always the crowd favourite at Gopher Dunes, fought hard in both motos to claim second overall.

Rockstar Energy/OTSFF/Yamaha Motovan. com’s Bobby Kiniry had a tough day in the Gopher Dunes sand. In the first moto he stalled his bike and had trouble restarting it. By the time he did, Kiniry found himself at the back of the pack. Undaunted, he put his head down and sliced and diced his way into a seventh place finish. In the second moto, Kiniry got a top-10 start, which he parlayed into a third place finish.

Cole Thompson, who joined the second half of the series riding an injured Colton Facciotti’s Red Bull/Fox/Royal Distributing/ KTM bike, registered an impressive fourth place finish in the first moto. Problems in the

“I want these three championships bad, real bad.” says current Canadian National Superbike Championship points leader and Kelso Conservation Area Mountain Bike Series points leader Jordan Szoke. “To hold three championships in three different disciplines in one season would be unheard of, but I intend to make it happen.” A bold statement, but one holding weight as multi talented Jordan Szoke already holds 17 titles to his credit throughout his 15 year career. Szoke hung the first #1 plate of the season on the wall this afternoon after a few long

“I always love coming to Dave Southam’s property.” says Szoke “We had an extremely busy schedule, but we were definitely going to make this one happen. I wouldn’t have missed it for anything, I absolutely love riding here.” On day one, Szoke had to settle for runner up to his fellow Trials des Nations, and trials demonstrations teammate Dan Johnson. A win on Sunday was the only option Szoke had if he wanted to repeat his National Trials Championship. “Dan is riding so amazing this year, he is really making it fun and challenging to compete together.” smiles Szoke. “We have been elevating our game so much it’s going to be a barn burner when we get together to do our last Bulls and Bikes Demonstration this weekend.” With Sunday’s sections modified, the Arden spectators witnessed an amazing prequel to what the observers can expect to see in September when our Canadian Trial des Nations competitors Jordan Szoke, Dan Johnson and Jonathan English invade France. Big steps, tricky steep and rocky climbs tested our three riders skills to the max as the teammates rode together as competitors here in Canada. Szoke rose to the occasion and ended up on the top of the box. “I rode really well today.”

says an elated Szoke. “Regardless of how the results play out, we all really had a great time here and pushed each other to ride better each and every loop.” With a win and a second for both Szoke and Johnson, the 2013 CMA Rule Book had to be referenced to deliberate the tiebreaker. Szoke takes home his fourth CMA National Trials Championship. Continued on Next Page

The Busted Knuckle Chronicles With great power comes great responsibility. The second part of that saying everyone leaves out is great cost. Snow White is on the mend. During a poker run this spring her motor started sounding less then healthy. When she was finally able to get under the knife we found that the pistons float up to 3/8" on the wrist pins. Not a good situation. I know many of you are saying serves me right for running an Ultima instead of a tried and true Harley but I still stand behind the motor even after this. The truth is that Ultima sells thousands of these motors every year with only a handful of them failing. Even Harley has their occasional dud even after 110 years of R&D. I have friends who dumped over $15G into a motor to make 20hp less them me; another friend bumped his up to a Screaming Eagle Stage III only to have less power then before. Snow White turned out amazing horsepower and she will again but like super heroes it will cost me some money. We cannot find a direct cause other then extreme severe detonation. Ultima is stumped as to the problem because they had never

This little sweetheart barely 2 months old now came into this world facing a mighty huge challenge. The love of her parents during this most difficult period helped see her through her surgeries (Hats off to Toronto Sick Kids ...again... as twenty odd years ago our son was on a 'Scheduled maintenance program'). This devotion placed some financial burdens on this young family and quickly the community responded. Tara’s friend Nikki asked her Uncle Paul if his motorcycle friends could pitch in some way and within days (18) this Ride happened. Word spread and other plans were shelved, 94 bikes showed up and one cyclist who said "doesn't matter what I ride, I can still register".... the Community responds $4000 was raised alone at the ride, personal cheques were

My Big Brother It was sixty years ago this August day My memory clear in every way I met his buddy, a comrade known to me What he said, was my catastrophe. Jim was dead, with many of his friends A torturing thought, that never ends As in all wars, are great mistakes Our own allied planes, their lives did take. On a hillside a short way from Caen I left with a comrade, at the break of dawn At the railroad station, I climbed the twisted steel And before my eyes, stood crosses white of sad appeal. Lying row on row, in an open field We walked the rows, till his cross did yield Previously he had come to me, asking that we together be

But I declined, not wanting on him, my responsibility. Fate at times had been preset Time may change, not my regret Each day I see him, in my mind Wanting never, to have left him there behind. I pray when I leave this vale of tears Be gone will the regrets, of these many years Once again, one time to another Together I’ll be, with my big brother. Commence pre flight checklist now… Holy old what the fig happened to the last couple of months. In two days I will have Seven and a wakey left and Thai and I step off on our Long Walk to Sanity. I have to share a funny exchange. I had recently told someone of my plan to walk 1100 kms over 50 days to raise the money to buy 50 more PTSD service dogs for disabled veterans. “Are you nuts?” “Actually the doctors try and use gentler phraseology but you are definitely in the right area code.” “Seriously?” “As a friggin Heart attack”. “Isnt that going to hurt?” “How bout them Blue jays” I have to tell you though I am scared about the upcoming journey. The fear does not come from the physical Challenge. I have done over 2,100 kilometers and 8,700 flights of stairs and hills since the 21st of January. My physio and kinesio team (Thanks Kirsten, Richard and Kayla) have done a great job helping my physical preparations. Beyond the walking and stairs, I have been doing training with a TRX suspension Trainer, a TRX Rip Trainer, and some other assorted bits to strengthen my Core and Upper Body. I went from crappy planks and one of the

The dark flip side of the coin is serious mental health issues, suicide and homelessness. Throw in the veteran adjective and it is a very unpalatable conversation.

The Busted Knuckle Chronicles bought and paid for with the blood of our fallen veterans, paid for with the minds, bodies and souls of its injured veterans. He wants to relish in the freedoms of being Canadian, then he had best ensure that those that he is asking to provide them are given respect, honour, and if injured, proper care. Social contract becomes sacred covenant the moment on side pays in blood as is the case with our veterans since Canada became a nation up to including those who have fallen in the War in Afghanistan. I am not a Combat veteran. My military career coincided with the end of the Cold War. Had I seen shots fired in anger, the face of the world today would most likely be radically different, if it existed at all. My injuries are Search and Rescue related. FILO’s (First In, Last out’s) Red, White and Blue, (Fire, Paramedics, Police, RCMP) can and do sustain post traumatic stress disorder injuries. So in the handful of days left before the start of an epic journey that will make Canada a better place, I have been asked Why I am doing it? This past June I stood at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa, by the National War Memorial, at the foot of a grave with his Silver Cross Mother and was struck with the very stark realization that the only way any of what lay before me made any sense is if the country he had died for was worth the sacrifice he had made. When his mother asked if I thought we could get help for some of his buddies who were struggling I was able to choke out one short sentence. “I sure hope so”. By Medric “Cous” Cousineau, SeaDawg

Avoid Turning Wide from a Stop How to avoid turning wide from a stop A few days ago I was out riding and enjoying what I consider the start of Florida’s best riding season. I was heading to a local biker hangout and found myself behind a couple of other riders; a man on a Harley Ultra and a woman on a Sportster. It looked like they were headed to the same restaurant. Just prior to getting to this location there are three stop signs, about one block apart. At the last stop sign you have to make a 90 degree right turn and then a quick left into the restaurants’ parking lot.

It took her so long to get through the intersection that a car on the cross street who didn’t have a stop sign, had to jam on the brakes to avoid hitting her. At the next stop sign, it was the same story except luckily, there was no cross traffic.

She wasn’t hurt but was obviously very

As they approached the third stop sign where you have to make a 90 degree right and then turn left about 50 feet into the parking lot, I thought to myself, this ain’t gonna be pretty. The guy made the right and quick left and pulled into a parking spot.

She thanked me, got back on the bike and duckwalked it across the road and into the parking lot. The guy with her was standing there shaking his head. I then pulled in next to the two of them. I was trying to think of a tactful way to give her a few helpful tips so I started with, “just started riding have ya?” From the look she gave me, I could see my question wasn’t near as tactful as it sounded before my lips started moving. “For your information, I’ve been riding for 10 years”, she snapped back. As I began taking my helmet off and trying to figure out how to get my foot out of my mouth, her angry look turned to a surprised smile. She said, “Hey, you’re that guy from SPEEDTV”. I nodded and was about to introduce myself when she turned to the guy with her and said, “What’s his name, we watch him all the time?” The guy blurted out, “Motorman”. She

then looked at the decal on my tank and said, “You’re the Ride Like a Pro guy!” Now I’m really embarrassed she said, and then added, “I’m really a good rider out on the road, it’s just the slow stuff that gets me every time”. With the ice broken, I was now able to explain to her how she could prevent the situation from happening again. Since I’ve seen many riders both “experienced” and “inexperienced” with similar problems when turning from a stop, here’s the easy way to do it. First, if you’re going to turn right at a stop sign, stop in the extreme left portion of your lane at an angle facing towards the right. This accomplishes two things. You’re already facing in the direction you want to go and since you’re in the left side of your lane, you’ve got 12 feet or more to go straight before you have to turn your handlebars. The more time you have to turn your bars, the easier it is. Next, once you’ve made sure no

Page 51

traffic is coming from the left; turn your head and eyes to the right and look way ahead at the lane you want to pull into. NEVER look at the yellow line or oncoming traffic. Stay in the friction zone until the bike is going straight ahead down your lane. You can practice this on a deserted road or even better, in an empty parking lot. With a little practice using the clutch and throttle and a little pressure on the rear brake, you should start challenging yourself. By that, I mean, start making the turn sharper and sharper. Eliminate the start off angle. With enough practice, you should be able to make a sharp right hand turn starting off with the handlebars at full lock right from a dead stop. When you can do that, you’ll never have to worry about turning too wide. Copyright 2010 Jerry “Motorman” Palladino www.ridelikeapro.com

POPE BLESSES HARLEY RIDERS HOG Heaven as the 110th Anniversary Party Begins: Biker culture came to the Vatican on Sunday, June 16th 2013 as Pope Francis blessed thousands of Harley-Davidsons and their riders celebrating the manufacturer’s 110th anniversary with a loud parade and plenty of leather. Thundering Harley engines nearly drowned out the Latin recitation of the “Our Father” prayer that accompanied Francis as he greeted the crowd before Mass. Standing in his open-top jeep, Francis drove up the main boulevard leading to St. Peter’s Square, blessing the thousands of people in what was a giant Harley parking lot. Once the service got under way, bikers in their trademark leather Harley vests sat in the square alongside nuns and tens of thousands of faithful Catholics taking part in an unrelated, two-day pro-life rally. Francis addressed them both afterward, giving a blessing to the “numerous participants” of the Harley gathering. Tens of thousands of Harley owners from around the world descended on Rome for the four-day anniversary of the American manufacturer. The main events were Sunday’s Vatican blessing and a parade Saturday past the Coliseum and other historic landmarks—Italian daily Corriere Della Sera reported that six bikes were involved in a pileup Saturday on the main ring road around the capital, while a Swiss biking couple was killed in a highway crash on Wednesday.

LWC News & ON Events

Earlier in the week, Milwaukee, Wisconsinbased, Harley gave Francis two white classic Harleys for the Vatican police force to use. There was something a bit incongruous about the Harley crowd—known for its “Freedom” motto, outlaw image and adventuresome spirit—taking part in a solemn papal Mass to commemorate a 1995 encyclical on the inviolability of human life. “Evangelium Vitae” is a roadmap of the church’s teaching against abortion, euthanasia and murder. Harley’s advertising for its 2013 bike collection reads “Live life on your own terms. More than 30 ways to defy the status quo. The Rev. Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman, noted that there were probably quite a few Catholic riders in the crowd and that regardless; anyone is welcome to a papal Mass. The Pope then spent a good half-hour after the Mass caressing, kissing and chatting with a few dozen sick or disabled people in the square, including one on a motorcycle wearing Harley garb.

Motorcyclist Pursued by Wolf

Robert’s Aimless Ramblings... July 2013 Newspaper

On Saturday June 8th, a Banff motorcyclist was pursued by a ‘massive’ grey wolf along a stretch of B.C. highway, and to prove his story, manages to take several pictures of the wolf chasing him. Banff mechanic Tim Bartlett was christening a new motorcycle through the Rocky Mountains when he had a rare wildlife encounter that was equal parts terrifying and enchanting. On a stretch of British Columbia’s Highway 93, a massive grey wolf emerged from the trees, lunged at his speeding ride and chased after him at full speed as he pulled away. The story would have become little more than another legend clanging around the roadhouses of Western Canada if Mr. Bartlett had not whipped a camera out of his top pocket to record the event for posterity; capturing a series of rare snapshots that have since been beamed around the world. National Post’s Tristin Hopper reached him by phone on Friday morning. How did this happen? I was about 320 [kilometers] into a 400 k trip … and was doing about 90km/h in the right hand lane going north and [the wolf] came from the left hand side of the road. It darted out, crossed the other lane and I had to swerve and accelerate to get around it. I went forward about 100 meters and when I turned around it was just standing in the middle of

the lane watching me. How close did it get to you? It was coming at me. It probably got to within a couple meters, easy, maybe a meter. If I’d have slowed down I would have definitely hit it, so I just opened it up, got a bit of power and got around it. I’ve had dogs run out at me on bikes before and you sort of get a feel for the distance the speed you’re going, but it was pretty tight. But after you’d gotten some distance between you, that’s when you pulled around for a closer look? I stopped the bike, pulled my gloves off, took my camera out, did a u-turn and came back, and that’s when I managed to get the pictures. When [the wolf] heard me coming, it jumped back over a [roadside] barrier and it started running. I sped up a little bit, it got in nice and close and I was driving with my right hand and clicking pictures with my left. When I first came back around, it came in really close; probably a bit too close. It would have been a real bad time to run out of gas. Even over the motor, I could hear it. I could hear its feet on the road. Do you think this wolf was playing with you, or were you being hunted? To me, it was more exciting than scary, I’ll put it to you that way. In my gut, I didn’t feel

The Busted Knuckle Chronicles threatened at all. I would have felt threatened if I was walking or on a bicycle, but I knew I could outrun it. It also didn’t have a real aggressive feel. I don’t think it was after me, it was probably after the bike. That’s just the way I felt; I could have been wrong, I’m no wolf expert. The chase kept up for about a kilometre. How did it end? As you can see in one of the last photos, a few cars had started coming and going so I thought, I better not be here, so I accelerated away. I didn’t want it jumping out into the path of an oncoming car. The last I saw it was running into the trees.

Deep Lube 2: It Will Loosen Your Nuts Reviewed by Ken Aiken

been filtered to remove gums, resins, waxes, and other impurities. The kerosene is also processed to remove its distinctive –and annoying—odor. A small amount (1%) of molybdenum disulphite (“moly”) is added to the solution. This super lubricant adheres to unpainted metal, but not to itself—no sticky buildup is possible—and while it can be worn away, it can’t be washed off. Another component is the propellant (for the aerosol cans, but not the gallon containers) a propane/butane combination that doesn’t harm the environment like fluorocarbons. A touch of citrus scent is added, just in case you want to use this on squeaky bedroom doors or other interior household and commercial applications.

It’s easy to excited by this product—if you’re a mechanic. Compared to the familiar product in the blue can, Deep Lube 2 has better penetration and greater lubrication properties.

Deep Lube 2 withstands temperatures from -50˚F – 1,000˚F, which means it’s not going to burn off at normal engine operating temperatures or freeze up during the winter.

Furthermore, it contains no Teflon, silicon, graphite, fluorocarbons, or turpentine, which makes it suitable for applications above and beyond motorcycle maintenance.

It’s also electronically non-conductive, so it can be used on wiring to drive out moisture or help prevent connecting plugs from accumulating water and corroding. I also discovered that it is superior to degreasers that I normally use to clean my wheel rims.

The base compound is 40% Venezuelan “bright stock” oil, the same as used in the finest watch lubricants. Its small molecular size enables this oil to penetrate extremely tight spaces and allows better adherence to metal. Another 40% is kerosene that has

The retaining nuts on the exhaust manifold of my bike were in place for 22 years. Several applications of Deep Lube 2 loosened these nuts to a point where removal was easy using a regular open box wrench. No torque

was required and I never got to use the nut splitters purchased for this job.

The Busted Knuckle Chronicles Garage mechanics that have switched to Deep Lube 2 report that they are using less for the same applications, which translates to a substantial savings in costs. It’s also being commercially used on heavy hydraulic equipment and delicate sewing machine parts; snowmobilers use it to prevent their control cables from freezing up. Since moly retains its lubrication properties up to 4,370˚F while withstanding pressures of 200,000 psi, it seems logical that Deep Lube 2 might be an alternative to chain lube. However, I’ll have a better idea after 6,000 miles of chain and sprocket wear are measured. 250g can, $9.99 + shipping & handling deeplube@gmail.com

Thoughts to Ponder

Painful Breakup A marine was deployed to Afghanistan. While he was there he received a letter from his girlfriend. In the letter she explained that she had slept with two guys while he had been gone and she wanted to break up with him. and, she wanted pictures of herself back.

Repairman Mrs. Peterson phoned the repairman because her dishwasher quit working. He couldn't accommodate her with an "after-hours" appointment and since she had to go to work, she told him, "I'll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dish washer, leave the bill on the counter, and I'll mail you a check. By the way, I have a large rotweiler inside named Killer; he won't bother you. I also have a parrot, and whatever you do, do not talk to the bird!" Well, sure enough the dog, Killer, totally ignored the repairman, but the whole time he was there, the parrot cursed, yelled, screamed, and about drove him nuts. As he was ready to leave, he couldn't resist saying, "You stupid bird, why don't you shut up!" To which the bird replied, "Killer, get him!!!"

So the Marine did what any squared-away marine would do. He went around to his buddies and collected all the unwanted photos of women that he could find. He then mailed about 25 pictures of women (with clothes and without) to his girlfriend with the following note: "I don't remember which one you are. Please remove your pictures and send the rest back."

Blonde Cousin A redhead lived on a ranch. She had a blonde cousin not too far away who was supposed to be coming to pick up a bull that day. The blonde had told her to telegram her when she was ready for the bull to be picked up. At the telegram office, the redhead asked how much it was and the man said $1 a word. The redhead only had $1 so she tried to think of a word that the blonde would understand to mean come and fetch the bull. Finally, she typed the word Comfortable and told the man: ''She's blonde, she'll read it slow.'' COM - FOR - DA - BUL

Newfie Airliner An airliner is coming into land at an airport obscured by fog. Visibility is practically nil, the ILS system is on the blink, so the newfie pilot has to land on wits alone. "Flaps, check," he says to the co-pilot, "Landing Gear, check. Altitude, check. Right, we're going in. Hold on." The plane lands and comes to a screeching, grinding halt; just short of the edge of the runway. "Holy Cow!" exclaims the pilot, "This must be the shortest runway I've ever landed on!" The newfie co-pilot looks left and right and says "Yeah, and about the widest, too ..."

Three Things At my oldest daughter’s wedding a few years ago, I was asked to do the “Father of the Bride” speech and in my little talk, I had referred to a ‘just released’ survey that had appeared in local media, that seemed to be a good bit of advice for this bright-eyed, love-struck couple as they were about to take on the world. The group who initiated the survey, asked a significantly large number of men and women who were in the demographic of 90 years of age, or older, one question.

2) They would have taken more risks in life. (They often ‘played it safe’, decided against following their dreams, be it to travel the world, take up a sport or interest that was not thought to be entirely safe, or have done something else they always wanted to, but just never followed through on).

it comes back in spades. My “happy place” is on my bike, on an open road, and that is where I collect my thoughts and often think over these “Three Things”.

3) Their biggest regret it seemed, was that they lacked a feeling of significance.

Just making sure that I have balance in my life. And then for me, there is a 4th thing that cements it all together... that is my personal faith in Jesus Christ.

It seemed to most people surveyed, they would not leave behind them, anything of significance. They regretted not having done more, for other people. Or a cause.

That is what makes my life worth living and gives me purpose, significance and the fuel to make a positive difference in other people’s lives. I guess you could say that is my legacy.

It was shortly after I gave this little speech at my daughter’s wedding that my wife of 30+ years decided to get on the back of my Harley for the first time. Yeehaw! It worked! lol

Which begs the question, “What legacy are you leaving behind when you leave this life?”

Since I gave that speech, I have often thought back on those “Three Things” and I have tried The question was asked, and the most popular to incorporate them into my life. In fact, as three answers were published. The question I first stepped into biker ministry many years was; “If you could live your life over again, ago, I had hoped that my life would make a what one thing would you do differently?” positive impact in other people’s lives and I have truly been blessed “out of my socks.” You may be surprised at the answers, but they do provide us younger folks with some good The risk thing is not something I’ve ever had insights into what some ‘voices of experience’ issue with, so am still doing the “stuff” that had to offer. others my age might shake their head at. Here are the three most popular answers: And the other “thing” I have under control ... 1) They would have told the people they I tell my wife, three kids and six grand kids valued and loved that they loved them, more pretty much every day, how much they mean often. to me and you know what? It feels great and
