BELLEVILLE, N.J. - A quiet afternoon in this township was rocked by a massive fire that spread to numerous structures, destroying property, local businesses and displacing residents. Around 2:30 p.m., May 3rd, local firefighters were dispatched to a reported fire on Cortland Street, in this densely populated area. They found a fire in a large blocklong commercial building. A ladder pipe was ordered and a recall of off duty members. Initial mutual aid units reported to the scene from Bloomfield, Nutley and Newark.

Blaze GLOUCESTER TWP., NJ At approximately 9:00 P.M. on May 5, 2026, the Camden County Fire Alarm Room dispatched Gloucester Twp. and automatic aid units to 59 Cameron Circle, in the Chews Landing section of Glouces­ ter Twp., for the re­ port of a dwelling fire. Several calls were received re­ porting a house on fire and extending to a neighboring home.

Units arrived and reported a single-story, sin­ gle-family, frame dwelling with fire showing from Division C. The radiant heat threatened the dwelling on the C exposure and caused the siding of that dwelling to melt.

Companies stretched several handlines to the rear and front of the dwelling to protect the expo­ sure and to extinguish the fire.

The fire made its way into the attic space from the rear and spread to the front of the dwelling.

Units performed extensive overhaul before placing the fire under control at about the 30 minute mark.

In April, the Hope Volunteer Fire Department - Station 38 re­ sponded with 46 and 21 Rescue to a MVAwith reported entrapment along Route 519 near the White Twp. border. Upon arrival, crews found a patient trapped inside the vehicle and quickly began co­ ordinated extrication efforts. Firefighters worked alongside rescue units to safely remove the patient. Once extricated, the patient was transferred to a nearby landing zone off Swayze Mill Road, where they were prepared for rapid transport. Crews remained on scene to assist with operations and ensure the area was secured before returning to service.

Ducklings Safely Recovered

by Lambertville Firefighters LAMBERTVILLE, NJ - On May 2nd at around 1:02 p.m., the City of Lambertville Fire District #1 responded to a small animal rescue in the vicinity of Owowcow Creamery on Union Street. When crews arrived, they discovered four ducklings stuck in a storm sewer. The animals were re­ moved from the drain without harm thanks to the efforts of Rescue Engine 17 and Unit 17-5.

During a patient transport event in April, EMS asked Colesville Fire Co. members to set up a landing zone for an arriving medical helicopter, Atlantic Air 3. A safe landing spot was marked and guarded by firefighters, who also made sure it was free of wires, debris, and other dangers. To ensure a seam less transition of care, personnel worked closely with EMS and the aircraft crew.

New Jersey: Julius Snyder, 55 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: Feb. 1,2020 Death Date: Oct. 27,2025 Fire Department: Camden Fire Department Initial Summary: Firefighter Julius Snyder responded to eight emergency calls while working a 24-hour shift from January 31, 2020, to February 1, 2020. Shortly after his shift ended, Firefighter Snyder suffered a med­ ical emergency. He was taken to a local hospital and subsequently transferred to a regional medical center for emergency surgery. After suffering prolonged complica­ tions from the medical emergency he suffered in 2020, Firefighter Snyder passed away on October 27, 2025.

Ryan, 61 Rank: Firefighter/Fire Commissioner Incident Date: Dec. 13,2025 Death Date: Dec. 13, 2025 Fire Department: Phoenicia Fire District Initial Summary: Firefighter/Fire Commissioner Michael Ryan was part of a crew that responded to a res­ cue call for an injured hiker. As the crew was carrying the hiker out of a wooded area, Firefighter/Fire Commis­ sioner Ryan suffered a cardiovascular event. Fellow first responders provided immediate lifesaving measures and transported Firefighter/Fire Commissioner Ryan to a local hospital where, despite all efforts, he was pro­ nounced deceased. Firefighter/Fire Commissioner Ryan served the Phoenicia Fire District as both a firefighter and the District Fire Commissioner.

Virginia: Linzie "Scott" Collins, 50 Rank: Firefighter-EMT Incident Date: November 15,2025 Death Date: November 16, 2025 Fire Department: Richlands Fire-EMS Initial Summary: On November 15, 2025, FirefighterEMT Linzie Scott Collins was on duty from 10:00 a.m. until 6 p.m. During this shift, Firefighter-EMT Collins responded to two calls. The following day at 1:15 a.m., the wife of Firefighter-EMT Collins found him in dis­ tress. Firefighter-EMT Collins stopped breathing and CPR was performed. Firefighter-EMT Collins was trans­ ported to a local hospital where he was pronounced de­ ceased at 3:24 a.m.

A RETIREMENT FOR VETERAN FIREFIGHTER AND DISPATCHER UPS & DOWNS Notes from Ron Jeffers

On the morning of April 30th, a North Hudson firefighter and a dis­ patcher, both with over 30-years of experience, walked out of the 43rd Street firehouse in Union City to begin their well-deserved retire­ ments. Most of Firefighter Ralph Albarran's career was spent with Squad Co. 1, located at this house.

Dispatcher Bill Miller worked on the second-floor of this firehouse in the radio room known as Fire Con­ trol A large number of fire depart­ ment members and dispatchers, ac­ tive and retired, assembled in front of the firehouse, as the street was closed to traffic.

Firefighter Ralph Albarran started his career with the former Union City Fire Department. Dis­ patcher Miller started his career 36years ago when North Hudson Fire Control was the dispatch center for the five separate departments that later merged into the regional de­ partment in 1999.

Firefighter Albarran was a uni­ versal member who served on en­ gines, squads and ladder companies. Most of his career was spent with Squad Co. 1. For his later years on the job he was a “trackee” assigned to Ladder Co. 5 in North Bergen. Moving on from Ladder 5's tractor-drawn aerial lad­ der to a new rear-mount apparatus, he immediately conformed to the new operations and did some great maneuvering with that rig at multi­ ple-alarm fires.

In addition, FF Albarran was one of the department members that was part of a committee involved with setting up the annual fire­ fighter's and fire officer's Christmas parade along Bergenline av. from 79th Street in North Bergen, through Guttenberg and West New York, and ending at 32nd St. in Union City, before COVID. One of dispatcher Miller's most memorable incidents was working when Sully landed Flight 1549 into the Hudson River, off the Weehawken shore. A full assignment was dispatched to the foot of Persh­ ing Rd. North Hudson Marine 1 and FDNY Marine 1 Alpha were the first fire boats to arrive, along with several NY Waterway ferry boats.

North Hudson firefighters, Weehawken and Port Authority police officers boarded the NY Waterway ferry “Henry Hudson” and assisted victims on the wings and in the water. Sixty-one passengers were taken to the New Jersey side where many were comforted by local fire­ fighters in a restaurant. Firefighters offered their cell phones to victims to contact their loved ones. Some injured passengers were transported

to Palisades Medical Center along the North Bergen waterfront.

When Miller was a new dis­ patcher, he operated in one radio room transmitting alarms to five separate departments with their in­ dividual procedures. Before he re­ tired, he saw those departments merge into one. In addition. North Hudson is now the dispatch center for the New Jersey Regional Fireboat Task Force.

Two long-serving and dedicated public servants that have earned their retirement.

DOWNS: An early-morning fire involving a Schley St. dwelling in Newark, April 25th, took the life of a woman and critically injured two others, according to WNBC News.

Three families were displaced.

UPS: Newly promoted fire cap­ tains in Teaneck are Martin Rolaf, Andrew Gonzalez and Leonard Hanauer.

DOWNS: A man died as the re­ sult of a fire in a Market St. dwelling in Elmwood Park, May 1st.

UPS: In Montclair, Kevin Stoute has been promoted to deputy fire chief. New captains are Thomas Hargraves and Peter Albanese.

Natasha Richardson was promoted to supervising fire inspector.

DOWNS: A fire raced through a Seventeenth St. home in Norwood, May 12th, sending a 75-year-old man to Hackensack University Medical Center with burns to his hands, according to the Daily Voice.

Two firefighters were treated at the scene by EMS personnel. Smoke from the burning 5,000-square-foot home could be seen from as far as Newark.

UPS: New recruit firefighters in Teaneck are Israel Infield, Igor Silva, Kyle Campbell, Timothy Tedesco, Todd Bums, Seth Hanauer and Ariel Pena.

DOWNS: One person was killed and three others were injured when a Jeep struck the rear of a tanker truck, carrying about 8,800-gallons of fuel, on I. 287 in Edison, May 17th. State police said the Jeep was traveling northbound when it hit the rear of the tanker and both vehicles caught fire. The driver of the Jeep was killed. The tanker driver, a pas­ senger in the Jeep and a firefighter were injured, according to reports.

More than 150 firefighters re­ sponded. Firefighters used foam to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading.

UPS: Jersey City firefighters res­ cued three adults and four children from a burning three-story dwelling on Monticello av.. May 12th. The Red Cross was assisting 24 dis­ placed residents, according to NJ.com.

DOWNS: A 2-alarm fire in­ volved three South 19th St. dwellings in Newark, May 16th.

The Red Cross was assisting 25 dis­ placed residents, according to the Daily Dispatch.

Turtle Fire Systems to every city ward. The system is a low-profile, high-volume nozzle designed to slide beneath vehicles, allowing firefighters to directly cool electric vehicle battery packs and other hard-to-reach fires.

DOWNS: Firefighters battled a junkyard fire on Weaver Rd., in West Milford, that involved explo­ sions and burned four hours overnight. May 20th. Local fire units were assisted by crews from Passaic, Bergen, Morris and Sussex counties, along with the NJ Forest Fire Service.

UPS: In May, the Dumont FD recognized ex-Chief James Molinaro for his 50-years of service with the department. He served as Chief of Department in 1984, 1987, 2008 and 2009. The department also rec­ ognized his son, ex-Chief Dan Lolinaro, for the more that 27-years of service, according to a DFD Facebook post.

DOWNS: A tractor-trailer rolled over onto a passenger car on Route 80 West in Elmwood Park, May 24th, trapping the auto's operator.

Fire units from Elmwood Park, Sad­ dle Brook, Paterson and Hacken­ sack teamed up with other first responders to extricate the trapped occupant. A heavy duty tow crane was called in to lift the trailer while crews utilized teamwork to crib and stabilize the lift with box cribbing and air bags, according to reports.

When enough space was made, fire­ fighters began cutting and spreading the tunnel to the driver for his re­ moval.

UPS: A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on April 30th for the re­

opening of the refurbished Chief John T. Brennan Fire Museum, in Bayonne. The museum is housed in the first firehouse that was build by the city in 1875. It is located at 10 W. 47th Street, and the visiting

hours will be on Saturdays between 10 am and 4 pm. The museum con­ tains firefighting memorabilia, in­ cluding reportedly the state's oldest hand-drawn hand hose wagon.

M u ltip le S tru c tu re s D estroyed in O ve rn ig h t R id g e fie ld P ark Blaze RIDGEFIELD PARK, NJ — On April 21st at 2:38 a.m., the Ridgefield Park Fire Department was dispatched to 193 Brinkerhoff St. for a reported house fire. Companies ar­ rived on scene along with Assis­ tant Chief Albequre, who transmitted a work­ ing fire and quickly requested a second alarm. Crews encountered heavy fire in the original fire building and the Bravo exposure upon ar­ rival.

Firefighters conducted an in­ terior fire attack, but due to wors­ ening fire conditions, an evacuation order was given and a third alarm was transmitted. The fire also extended to the Delta ex­ posure and two garages. As the fire consumed the buildings, sev­ eral explosions occurred in the garages. The fire further extended to the rear decks of the homes. As conditions in the original fire building continued to deteriorate, all members were withdrawn from the structure. Numerous ex­ terior handlines, along with Truck 2’s ladder pipe, were used to knock down the fire in the origi­ nal building and the Bravo expo­ sure.

All visible fire was extin­ guished, and extensive overhaul operations were conducted over approximately two hours of fire­ fighting. No civilian injuries were reported. Two firefighters were transported with minor injuries.

Mutual aid was provided by Bergenfield, Bogota, Carlstadt, Cliffside Park, Englewood, Fort Lee, Hackensack, Hasbrouck Heights, Leonia, Little Ferry, Moonachie, Palisades Park, Teaneck, and Tenafly, along with countywide rehab services. Assis­ tant Chief Jacob Zardoya said.

The fire remains under inves­ tigation by the Fire Prevention Bureau. Mutual aid crews oper­ ated on scene for an extended pe­ riod conducting overhaul operations and worked with Bergen County Hazmat to m iti­ gate hazards.

Conflagration in B ellville Causes Huge Emergency Response BELLEVILLE, N.J. - A quiet afternoon in this township was rocked by a massive fire that spread to numerous structures, de­ stroying property, local businesses and displacing residents.

Around 2:30 p.m.. May 3rd, local firefighters were dispatched to a reported fire on Cortland Street, in this densely populated area. They found a fire in a large block-long commercial building. A ladder pipe was ordered and a re­ call of off duty members. Initial mutual aid units reported to the scene from Bloomfield, Nutley and Newark.

The original fire building was described as a mattress warehouse, which is part of the closely con­ nected buildings. Firefighters were hampered by wind gusts of 35-40 mph, according to reports. The fire extended into a cardboard ware­ house. Additional alarms were transmitted, as well as a call for air supply trucks and a request for air monitoring. The thick black smoke rose into the sunny sky and was visible for many miles. At the rear of the complex, along railroad tracks, firefighters found heavy fire, with many trees hampering their operations.

Flames in the front of the main building began to vent out of win­ dows and through the roof, causing a radiant heat problem. Master streams were set up, including aer­ ial ladder devices, but were later relocated and a collapse zone was established. More and more fire companies were called to the scene.

Residents in homes across the street were evacuated as home sid­ ings began to melt. There was also a serious ember condition. Fire­ fighters used hand lines to wet down the dwellings. Around 4 p.m., a fire erupted in an occupied two-story wood-frame duplex a block away on Stephens Street.

Mutual aid companies pulled up to go to work and make sure the res­ idents were evacuated. The initial companies that pulled up here

were Newark Engine 13, Mont­ clair Engine 2 and Kearny Tower 2. Additional companies followed in to the scene.

Fire consumed the upper floor and attic. Conditions worsened and an evacuation was ordered as flames took control of the roof, with low banking smoke as well.

Back at the original fire, more fire companies converged on the area and more master streams were set up. Tower ladders from South Essex and Moonachie set up in a lot along side of the buildings, as fire was visible through windows, along with pushing smoke. Later, these two rigs were moved out of the lot to reposition as flamed vented out of all windows and through the roof.

Master streams surrounded the burning complex for hours, putting a stress on water mains. As the sun began to set over Belleville, nu­ merous mutual aid water tenders were called to the scene. A tanker task force was set up blocks away from the scene, setting up water pools in the middle of an urban area. Large diameter hose (LDH) was stretched, shutting down more area streets. There was also a pumper drafting in operation.

The water shuttle lasted over night. Mutual aid fire companies began to either be relieved or send fresh manpower to their apparatus to operate over night, in the dark streets. Mutual aid fire companies reported to the scene from at least six counties.

Public Service shut off power for about 700 buildings, including township hall and police headquar­ ters. The Red Cross was assisting residents who could not return to their homes due to the smoke con­ dition and the power shut down for safety reasons.

In the evening. Mayor Michael Melham declared his town in a state of emergency. This will allow

the mayor and the town council to seek monetary aid from the county, state and federal government.

Mayor Melham added that the fire may have been caused by “some welding happening inside of a mattress factory.” The fire in­ vestigation was underway. The mayor stressed that the fire oc­ curred on Sunday, relieving the structures of many occupants. An­ other occupancy effected was a well known, local boxing club. In addition, it was reported that one firefighter suffered a non-lifethreatening injury during the long duration fire.

Schools were closed on the following Monday and Tuesday, as well as some businesses.

Heavy equipment had been moved in to knock the buildings down. Numerous local and mutual aid fire companies remained on the scene to wet down deep-seated fire during this operation.

In the days that followed, a re­ port came out stating that the fire involved seven warehouse struc­ tures, 17 businesses and a fourfamily dwelling. It took over 18-hours to bring the mass scale operation under control. Sixty-two mutual aid companies and over 300 firefighters responded to the initial alarms. Another 50 compa­ nies and hundreds of firefighters answered additional calls to the scene, and to cover the township, for a ten day period until the com­ mand was terminated.

First responders converged on Belleville from Essex, Hudson, Bergen, Passaic, Union, Middle­ sex, Monmouth and Somerset counties.

The conflagration was de­ scribed as a 12-alarm fire. All first responders including fire, police, EMS, OEM and others performed professionally. In addition, at least five different volunteer, non-profit, canteen organizations were on hand to provide rehab with bottles of water and food.

On April 10, 2026, Hightstown Engine Company No. 1 announced the death of Ed Esch, a career fireman who spent 70 years serving the Hightstown community.

From 1969 until 1975, Esch led the department in a variety of ca­ pacities, including executive and line duties. Additionally, he con­ tinued to be involved at the state level with the New Jersey State Firemen's Association, where he has been a member of the Reg­ istration Committee and a Sergeant at Arms since 1992.

Members recalled his meticulous attention to detail and dedication to keeping equipment ready. Up to his death, Esch continued to participate in department meetings.

His decades of service had a long-lasting effect on Station 41 and the Borough of Hightstown, according to officials.

All Companies in Service in Maple Shade MAPLE SHADE, NJ - At approximately 10:12 P.M. on May 5, 2026, the Burlington County Fire Alarm Room dispatched the Maple Shade Fire Department and automatic aid companies to 340 S. Maple Ave. for the report of a house on fire. Several calls were received reporting a working fire with possible people trapped. The first arriving units reported fire showing from Division A of a 1.5-story, single-family dwelling. Maple Shade PD reported that all victims were out which was confirmed by the primary search conducted by the firefighters. Companies stretched han­ dlines to knock the fire in the front and made their way to the second floor and attic space to extinguish the fire that extended up. Overhaul was conducted and the fire was placed under control at about the 20 minute mark.

Fast Response to V ehicle Fire in K en ilw o rth KENILWORTH, NJ - The Kenilworth Fire Department and Rescue Squad responded to a reported vehicle fire in the 700 block of Vernon Avenue, March 10th. On arrival, Engine 63, Squad 2, Res­ cue 2, and command units discovered a car fire, and Engine 63 crews started suppression op­ erations and extended a front bumper line. The vehicle's damage was limited and the fire was quickly put out.

Livingston Crews Knock Down A ttic Fire on Morningside Drive LIVINGSTON, NJ - At around 6:23 p.m. on March 15th, the Liv­ ingston Fire Department responded to a working home fire at 45 Momingside Drive.

Initially, when Engine Com­ pany 5 arrived, they found fire in the attic area and launched an aggressive interior attack. To aid with suppression efforts.

Engine Company 1 extended a line to the back. Due to shifting conditions, personnel were evacuated twice during operations as a precaution.

Firefighters re-entered and resumed their offensive after reevaluating.

Due to the fire's hidden and difficult-to-reach location, all respond­ ing crews had to work together to put out the fire.

While the West Orange Fire De­ partment, Millbum Fire Depart­ ment, and Cedar Grove Fire Department handled coverage, the Roseland Fire Department, East Hanover Fire Department, Caldwell Fire Department, and West Caldwell Fire Department offered mutual aid.

In addition to the Bell and Siren Club of Livingston, the Livingston First Aid Squad supplied EMS sup­ port.

BRANCHVILLE, NJ — March 21st — While decommissioning an older tanker that sustained operations for many years, the STFDS 38 has started the process of switching to a modern water supply unit. The Township of Mahwah donated a 2004 Seagrave tanker, which Station 38 just put into operational preparedness. It is an­ ticipated that the device, which can transport 2,500-gallons of water, will improve tanker shuttle operations in township areas without hydrants. The action coincides with members' ongoing long-term plans to replace outdated equipment. Although current build timelines are anticipated to be more than two years, a group established two years ago is working toward a single new unit. A backup and additional water supply unit was provided by the de­ parting Tanker 2, a 1992 Ford that was earlier purchased from the Frankford Fire Department.

Two Displaced, No Injuries in Bayonne House Fire BAYONNE, NJ - On April 15, 2026, a Bayonne Police officer on patrol alerted the Bayonne Fire Department to a reported structure fire at 186 Prospect Avenue. When units arrived, they discovered a residential home's second floor on fire. In around 16 minutes, firefighters man­ aged to contain the fire by stretching a single hose line. While other units assisted with on­ site operations, crews searched and looked for extensions. The American Red Cross and the Office of Emergency Management are helping two displaced residents. There were no reported injuries. Fire investigators concluded that the fire was accidental in nature. Author­ ities attributed the limited damage to the building to the prompt police warning and the wellcoordinated response.

W e s tv ille Crews H andle 1-295 C om m ercial V e h ic le F ire WESTVILLE, NJ - The West­ ville Fire Department was called to a reported commercial motor vehicle crash with fire near mile marker 20.0 on 1-295 heading south, March 26th. Chief 6, En­ gines 733 and 19, Rescues 6 and 19, and Tender 21 were among the units Jump to fiie# sent out.

When Chief 6 041426111 arrived, he saw that | a commercial truck '* 6 was heavily in­ volved in the fire and asked for more resources to help with water de­ livery and suppression.

While securing the area and mitigating traffic hazards, crews erected handlines and launched an external attack. Traffic control and scene safety were coordi­ nated with supporting authorities because of the location. There were no reports of responders suf­ fering any immediate injuries.

Crews stayed on scene to finish overhaul and make sure all hot spots were extinguished.

Fanwood Crews Respond to Pole S trike on North Avenue FANWOOD, NJ - A car crash damaging a utility pole prompted the Fanwood Fire Department to respond to North Avenue, March 27th. The local Rescue Squad and the Fanwood Police Department worked with Engine 7 and Ladder 1. Crews that arrived first secured the area and evaluated any electrical threats, as well as the damaged pole. In addi­ tion to helping EMS staff with patient care, firefighters se­ cured the vehicle. Utility firms were asked to fix the affected infrastructure and make sure the area was secure.

Large Gloucester County Wildland Fire Sends Smoke Plume That Could Be Seen From Miles Away WEST DEPTFORD, NJ - In the late morning of Saturday, April 11, 2026, the Gloucester County Fire Alarm Room dis­ patched West Deptford and auto­ matic aid companies to the area off of Red Bank Av­ enue for the report of a brush fire.

Re s p o n d i n g units could see a large smoke col­ umn from a large brush fire that in­ volved acres of ele­ phant grass and wooded areas near what is known as the Sunoco Eagle Point Refinery. The fire spread quickly to over 160 acres.

Nearby residences and a local elementary school were in close proximately and threatened by the fire, so structural protection task forces were special called to the scene. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service was also called to the scene to assist with cutting fire lines and performing backfire op­ erations to help keep the fires away from power lines and struc­ tures.

The fire was later placed under control with several units remaining on location for some time. There were no injuries re­ ported, nor structures involved.

Newark Battles a Third-Alarm in M ultiple Buildings NEWARK, NJ — On the evening of April 17th, Newark firefighters responded at 10:27 p.m. to 196 Jeffer­ son St. for a re­ ported fire. Smoke detector alarms could be heard down the block when firefighters arrived. The fire ex­ tended from 196 Jefferson St., the original fire build­ ing, to exposures at 194, 192, 190, and 188 Jefferson St. At the height of the blaze, four ladder pipes and several deck guns were used to knock down the fire.

The fire displaced 59 resi­ dents and injured six firefighters.

The firefighters were later treated at University Hospital, while dis­ placed residents were assisted with relocation efforts by the Newark Office of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross. More than 100 fire­ fighters battled the flames. The fire was declared under control at 3:24 a.m., according to Newark officials. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investiga­ tion by the Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit.

MONMOUTH BEACH, NJ - The Monmouth Beach Fire Department responded to a multiple-car collision on Ocean Avenue on April 17th at around 6:00 p.m., with mutual aid from Sea Bright Fire Rescue. When crews arrived, they discovered a two-car collision with one vehicle flipped. The driver and passenger were removed from the car by firefighters from units 33 and 43. Until the car was removed, fire units stayed on scene to mitigate hazards and guarantee scene safety. Mon­ mouth Beach EMS assessed and treated patients on scene. The Monmouth Beach Police Depart­ ment is looking into the collision.

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — On March 14th, Engine 1, Tour #4 crew was sent to the 50 block of South Orange Avenue to help with a third-alarm structure fire, according to the Hillside FMBA. After arriv­ ing, the team worked with mutual aid organizations and helped put out and quell fires. When cir­ cumstances permitted, crews coordinated both internal and external actions under a single command structure.

On April 1st, Cliffside Park overcame a challenge of a two-alarm fire being at 184 Cottage Place, a street so narrow that an aerial could not get to the building and have room for outrigger place­ ment. Ground ladders had to be carried in to the fire building. The heavy fire was knocked down and the fire was placed under con­ trol in less than two hours.

Woodbridge Engine 3 has been assigned a 2025 Spartan Metro Star model 2000gpm/750-gwt pumper. The raised roof cab has six seats and possesses equipment chargers. The extended front bumper has a hose tray, inlet and discharge gates.

There are three cross-lay beds, two rear discharge gates, and a deck gun is located above the pump. In addition, there is a hydraulic ladder rack on the officer's side and two hard suction hoses are mounted on the chauffeur's side of the apparatus. Other features include roll-out tool trays, wheel well storage space and this unit carries a BlitzFire monitor. It was sold by Campbell Supply Co.

Chester Squad 2 received a 2026 Pierce Enforcer 1500-gpm/2633-gwt pumper-tanker.

The raised roof cab has six seats and front bumper storage space. Additional features include rear steering, 2 cross-lay beds, two rear direct-fill inlets, two rear discharge gates, dump valve and it has a TFT monitor. Also included is a light tower, swing-out tool board, roll-out trays, tool box in the first compartment on the chauffeur's side and a hydraulic ladder rack. It was sold by Fire & Safety Services.

It has hose bed ground ladder storage space, scene lights, and wheel well storage space. It was sold by Absolute Fire Equipment Co.

Mahwah Rescue Co. 1 has been assigned a 2026 Pierce Arrow XT heavy rescue apparatus. The extended front bumper has equipment storage space and a 10,000lb winch. The cab has six seats and a transverse compartment. Additional features include a 10,000-lb. portable winch with three receivers, roll-out tool trays, a rear end roll-out equipment tray, scene lights and a 25 kW generator. It was sold by Fire & Safety Services.

NEWTON, NJ - Following several reports to the Sussex County Sheriff's 911 Center, Hampton Township Fire & Rescue responded to a car accident involving entrapment near Route 206 and the Walmart entrance, May 3rd. Stillwater Area Vol. Fire Company, Fredon Vol. Fire Company, and Newton Vol. Fire Department provided mutual aid. Hampton units established a landing zone close by while Newton Squad 3 finished the extrication. One patient was taken by land transport, while another was airlifted by Atlantic Air Ambulance. Units ran for almost an hour.

The New Jersey State Police were given control of the incident.

On March 22nd, the Adelphia Fire Company had their annual installation dinner dance, which gave members a chance to get together with their fami­ lies while honoring accom­ plishments, leadership, and service.

Officers were sworn in, while former leaders, such as former Chief Timothy McKay (20242025) and former President George Gravatt Jr. (20202024), were honored.

On April 25th, the New Jersey State Firemen's Benevolent Association hosted its yearly Valor Awards Dinner at Pines Manor.

Firefighters Nicholas Cioffi, Christopher Fazio, Doug Saffioti, and Timothy Griffin, the Long Branch Fire Captain and Monmouth Beach Fire Chief, were among those honored with the Bronze Medal of Valor.

The Long Branch City Fire De­ partment's response to many swimmers in difficulty at Cot­

tage Avenue Beach on Sep­ tember 18, 2025, was recog­ nized with this award. To perform rescues, crews ven­ tured into choppy waves.

Cioffi and Fazio removed one victim. Before being lost in strong waves and asking for assistance, Saffioti helped an­ other victim. With the help of shore workers, all firefighters were successfully recovered after Fazio and Griffin went back into the water to help.

The second casualty was then brought to shore with Gryphon's assistance.

The author has a colorful back­ ground beginning at an early age.

He has served as a volunteer and paid firefighter in the fire sendee and presently is a lieutenant in the Denver, Nebraska Fire Depart­ ment. The book features 350 sep­ arate firehouses, all of which were active when photographed.

Many are unique and historic.

The book also features interior and apparatus shots, some fire photography and some street scenes to illustrate the perspec­ tive of the neighborhoods in which they are. There are 22 chapters plus an index. The chap­ ters include West Coast Fire­

houses (a full chapter), and then separate chapters of San Fran­ cisco, Oakland, Los .Angeles City and County. Separate chapters cover the Los .Angeles City and County Fire Departments. County Station 127, which was the one that the television show “Emer­ gency” used, is in this book. A full chapter features Western U.S. Firehouses with separate chapters on Colorado firehouses and the Denver Fire Department. Two pages are dedicated to Midwest Firehouses, followed by full chap­ ters for Chicago, St. Louis and De­ troit. Chapters on Southern U.S. Firehouses, Florida Firehouses are next, followed by Eastern U.S. Firehouses, including Boston and Cambridge, NLA.., and Baltimore, MD. The District of Columbia takes up a chapter. There is a Fire­ house introduction for the FDNY featuring information about the five boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. Photos of stations in all but Staten Island are featured.

Four pages take up firehouses in Canada. All photos are color and of excellent quality. Many have apparatus in them but there is no information about the vehicles, as this is strictly a firehouse book. I have one lame remark to make and that is one of the New York City boroughs is named “The Bronx”, not just “Bronx”, but the author not being from New York is ex­ cused for not knowing this. For the price, this is an excellent book and the reader will be well pleased perusing over it.

HO-HO-KUS, NJ - On April 3rd, the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department was called to an over­ turned car on Mill Road. The driver was already out of the car and uninjured when crews arrived.

While waiting for a tow service to remove the vehicle, firefighters secured it, cleaned up a fluid spill, and stayed on the scene for about an hour.

Blaze Engulfs O utbuilding, Prom pts M ulti-A gency Fire Response in A tla n tic County MAYS LANDING, NJ - On April 16th, Laureldale Fire Rescue, with assistance from Mays Landing Fire Department and Cologne Volunteer Fire Company, responded to a structure fire where an outbuilding at the rear of a property was found fully involved on arrival. Crews quickly established com­ mand and initiated an aggressive attack. Engine 18-33 han­ dled fire suppression while Tanker 18-19 secured the water supply, with additional units supporting operations. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service assisted with heavy equipment to clear burning brush and complete extinguishment. Firefight­ ers operated for an extended period before bringing the in­ cident under control.

On April 11, 2026, Secaucus Fire Department members of Washington Hook & Ladder Co. #1 and Rescue Co. #1/Engine Co. #2 took part in an intensive day of live fire training at the Bergen County Fire Academy. The training featured three live burn evolutions, giving firefighters the opportunity to operate in realistic, high-heat conditions while sharpening critical firefighting skills. Crews worked side by side through a range of assignments, including fire attack, search and rescue operations, and coordinated ventilation techniques. Each evolution was designed to simulate real-world fireground scenarios, challenging members to think quickly, communicate effectively, and operate safely under pressure. The hands-on experience allowed participants to build confidence while reinforcing the importance of teamwork and accountability. The strong turnout reflected the department’s commitment to ongoing training and preparedness. Members embraced the opportunity to learn, improve, and support one another throughout the day. A special thank you was extended to the instructors at the Bergen County Fire Academy for their guidance and support, helping make the training both productive and memorable. Trainings like these ensure that Secaucus firefighters remain ready to respond with skill, professionalism, and dedication when their community needs them most.

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - March 15th - Members of the South Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department took part in a St. Baldrick’s Foundation event at the North Plainfield Fire De­ partment to generate funds and awareness for childhood cancer. Firefighters participated in the event by shaving their heads, backing the cause and demonstrating solidarity with children fighting cancer. The gathering united fire service personnel and community members to back pediatric cancer research and outreach initiatives. Members of the depart­ ment collected over $2,500 by taking part in the event.

W orking K itchen Fire Contained FAIR LAWN, NJ - On Tuesday, April 14th at approximately 1:30 p.m., a neighbor called Fair Lawn Police and reported smoke coming from a home on the 38 block of Paterson St. First arriving police units found a working kitchen fire in the single-family home. No one was home at the time. Chiefs Salvini, Palmieri and Rinaldowere on scene. A working fire was transmitted, bring­ ing a 2nd alarm response from mutual aid companies. The fire was contained to the kitchen, which received extensive damage. There were no injuries. Fair Lawn Rescue and Fair Lawn Vol­ unteer Ambulance Corps also responded.

I have gone to resiliency train­ ing, and they talk about having gratitude, but why do we need a program to learn how to appreciate things. I have heard that gratitude is basically appreciating the life that you have.

I know people who have gone through major events in life and then they learned to appreciate things. Why do some people need a major event? .After I had my major event, I have learned to appreciate each morning and look at things a lot differently than when I did be­ fore.

Do you know how many times the Bible discusses that we need to be thankful? It's over one hundred fifty times. Psalm 107:21 states "Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his won­ derful deeds for mankind."

Have you noticed deer or other animals watching you as you are in the traffic?

Some of us need to be re­ minded that even our now is not promised and if we wake up tomor­ row, it is definitely a gift from God. We may make plans for our life, but everything can change in less than a heartbeat.

Have you even taken the time

to smell the head of a baby or really listened to children as they laughed or really listened to children as they laughed or really sat down and lis­ tened to the stories of someone else, especially those with much life ex­ perience or going through chal­ lenges.

There are many people that can appreciate having food and shelter.

James 1:17 states "Every good and perfect gift is from above, com­ ing down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows."

Many times, I think about sitting on a porch reading a good book and just enjoying a nice cup of tea and just watching the day unfold.

The story got to me of a woman who face flooding of a hurricane. In the shelter, she was surrounded by her family, and she had all that she needed in life.

There are people that I know that love foul weather. To them, they enjoy the smell and the sound of the rain falling and thunder and watch­ ing the lightning.

Is there something that you carry that is a reminder to appreciate things. Do you carry a picture of o loved one?

We may need reminders at times of how lucky we really are. We may not appreciate a situation as we are going through it but may look back later and say how that may have re­ ally changed our lives.

Members of the Bergen and Rockland County volunteer fire departments that have left us in the past year were recognized by firefighters, families and friends. Fortunately, over the past year there was no line-of-duty death.

B utler Crews Handle Overnight Fire w ith M utual Aid BUTLER, NJ - The Butler Fire Department responded to a Main Street structure fire shortly after midnight on April 2nd, which resulted in significant damage and altered a portion of the downtown area. In order to contain the fire and safeguard surrounding structures, crews worked for several hours alongside mutual aid companies. Residents and nearby companies helped responders during the event by giving them access to facilities for rest and cleanup, as well as food and beverages. Units gathered at the firehouse and resumed operations when the fire was contained.

Designing and Building Training Props IN THE FIRE ZONE JOSEPH CEA

Building training props is part of firefighting. Whereas that is certainly a commonality be­ tween all departments the im­ plementation of what props are built and how they are built etc., varies considerably and is as unique as each depart­ ment. Defined training props are specialized structures that simulate conditions, obsta­ cles, and hazards of real-world emergencies.

Props can teach and reinforce essential skills like forcible entry, search/rescue, mask confidence, ventilation, and hose handling. Obviously, a number of factors influence prop construction. These would include department fi­ nances, location (urban vs rural), the presence of a junior firefighting program and the types of calls to name a few.

The first and most important consideration when building training props is firefighter safety. This is non- negotiable.

NFPA1400 is set to replace in­ dividual standards of 1402 and 1403 and do provide training safety guidance although they are more specific to live fire drills. Because safety is para­ mount there are several props that should be purchased (as opposed to building them) such as any gas emergency/hazmat simula­ tions, a forcible entry door and flashover/burn simulators to name a few. When talking about prop safety you must also consider placement and set up relative to safety hose lines and possibly having an EMT on site.

To start, building a prop where safety is arguably more vital would be a maze. Firefighters navigating a maze are typically blacked out (which simulates smokey conditions) and must crawl to safety through a se­ ries of narrow channels, turns and stairs while on air. They may also experience wires or other obstacles within the maze that can also cause anx­ iety.

A well-built maze will have in­ structors having access to fire­ fighters at all points throughout the maze. This is because mazes are frequently used in firefighter 1 courses and for junior firefighters.

Being inexperienced and more prone to needing guidance it is important that instructors be able to visually see, touch and talk to firefighters as they go through.

Props should also be relevant and purposeful for your de­ partment. There are some props that fit this description across the board such as an escape window or the afore­ mentioned maze. Another all­ purpose prop is the disentan­ glement box which is simply an 8 x 4-foot box with bars, wires and other obstacles throughout. In spite of the short distance, it is still an ex­ cellent method for teaching firefighters how to untangle themselves or not get tangled in the first place and not press the panic button.

With all that said there are also props that are relevant based on the types of calls your de­ partment typically gets and/or the types of structures that are in the community you serve.

For example, if your district has several office buildings constructing a Denver drill prop may be in order. Even if your district does not warrant this kind of prop a mutual aid district might so it’s important to coordinate with neighboring districts and departments.

Since any props are likely going to be built from the ground up that means that they can potentially be modi­ fied to allow to be more easily put together, taken apart and put away in storage. By all means if your department has the storage that is great. How­ ever, if space is going to be a problem, then again coordina­ tion is key. Combining the stor­ age issue and mutual aid one other point to consider is adding to any agreement would be the storage, access and use of any props. The first department I joined did not have a wall to train and qualify for bailouts but a neighboring district did and we routinely used that prop (as an aside New York State is the only

state that requires a bailout qualification).

The question then becomes how to obtain the materials for all the props you want to build.

If you are looking to buy new lumber financial approval may be the first step although most wooden props aren’t that ex­ pensive to build (under $300).

Consider asking for donations of materials as there may not be the need to buy. In my expe­ rience many local and chain hardware stores will jump at the chance to assist a local fire department full well knowing in the long run it also benefits them from a fire safety stand­ point but also from a public re­ lations angle as well.

Additionally, there are grants that will assist with purchasing new supplies the downside of which would be writing a grant application. Your town Dept of Public Works (DPW) may also be willing to donate a culvert tube for pack escape drills or as part of a mask confidence course. Don’t forget any online sites that advertise free sup­ plies - 1literally have 50 pallets at my house being used in var­ ious capacities all of which I have gotten free from Facebook Marketplace or Craigs List and all of which could be re-purposed to build a training prop. Last but not least simply keep your eyes and ears open as some departments clean house and get rid of stored un­ used equipment as their needs evolve and change.

Lome "Bob" Wastell, a former firefighter, passed away on April 16th at the age of 80, according to the Bridgeton Fire Department. Before retiring on March 1st, 2004, Wastell served for more than 25 years after starting his career on September 17th, 1978. He held positions as an arson investigator, fire inspector, EMT, and firefighter throughout that time. He oversaw a fire safety initiative in Bridgeton Public Schools, earning him the nickname "Fireman Bob." He continued to serve as chairman of the Bridgeton Firemen Relief Association's Trustees when he retired.

When units arrived, they discovered that the person was hung above the ground and needed a technical rescue. After securing the area, firefighters used rope equipment and ground ladders to get to the patient. The parachutist was safely removed and brought to the ground by crews working in a controlled manner.

Lodi Firefighter Pedro Jimenez tragically lost his life while saving his daughter's life in a tragic traffic accident last August. On May 9th, members of Lodi Truck 1 presented his wife and family with a lifesaving bar and plaque. A presentation was also made by the company ladies aux. Making the presentation was Truck Co. Pres­ ident ex-chief Sal Paci Jr., Capt. AJ Laverty and Assistant Chief Matt Lombarbi.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ On April 24th, the East Rutherford Fire Department responded to a ruptured high-pressure gas line after it was struck during construction opera­ tions on Hackensack Street, prompting an immediate emer­ gency response.

As a precaution, crews evacuated the surrounding area and shut down the road­ way to protect public safety.

With the break located near a newly constructed apartment build­ ing, additional resources were re­ quested, bringing mutual aid departments to the scene. Working in coordination, responders secured the area while PSEG crews arrived and safely mitigated the hazard.

Rutherford firefighters along with mutual aid fought this 2nd alarm fire in a row of garages on Kipp Ave., April 28th. A quick knock down held the fire to 3 units of the row of about 6. Companies from Lyndhurst, East Rutherford and North Arling assisted on the scene. Bergen County Health Dept, and Bergen County Haz- Mat were also called to the scene. The fire was under control in about 20 minutes.

On April 30th, the Cecil Fire Company helped the Williamstown Fire Department respond to a fire. Chief 295, Rescue Engine 29, and Util­ ity 295 were among the Cecil units sent to assist with operations.

BRANCHVILLE, NJ - During National Public Safety Telecommuni­ cators Week, the Frankford Township Fire Department honored dispatchers at the Sussex County Sheriff's 911 Center. Telecom­ municators respond to 911 calls, collect important information, and send out law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical serv­ ices. In order to support operations on the scene, they also organ­ ize resources, keep an eye on radio traffic, and provide updates.

Serving as the county's main public safety answering point, the center handles both emergency and non-emergency calls. In order to keep personnel informed during crises and to preserve situa­ tional awareness, dispatchers are essential. Their efforts help all agencies respond in a fast and safe manner. The acknowledge­ ment emphasizes how crucial dispatch staff are to day-to-day op­ erations and how they support coordinated emergency response.

Car Fire Spreads to Woods, Prompts M ulti-A gency Response in Newton NEWTON, NJ - Following a report from the Sussex County Sheriff's 911 Center, Hampton Township Fire & Rescue re­ sponded to a car fire on Mary Jones Road, April 28th. The New Jersey State Police, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, the Fredon Volunteer Fire Company, and the Stillwater Area Volunteer Fire Company provided assistance. On arrival, units discovered a car fire that had spread to the wood line.

Crews moved a hand line for suppression as Engine 2 stretched a 3-inch supply line. Water supply operations were aided by tankers. Access was impeded and fire conditions were prolonged due to a burst fuel tank. Crews worked for a little more than two hours.

RIVERSIDE FIRE COMPANY NO. 1

Q u ick In te rio r A tta c k C o n ta in s K itc h e n F ire in M ixed -U se R ive rsid e B u ild in g RIVERSIDE, NJ - On April 17th, Riverside Fire Company No. 1 responded to a reported fire alarm activation at a mixed-use building on East Scott Street, housing a restaurant on the ground floor with apartments above. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke conditions inside the restaurant, prompting an upgrade to a full building fire response. Firefighters quickly lo­ cated the source of the fire in the rear kitchen area and initiated an aggressive interior attack.

The blaze was brought under control in a timely manner, with little to no extension beyond the area of origin, preventing further damage to the structure and adjoining residential units.

Sutphen Corporation Offering Tillers The Sutphen Corporation of Dublin, Ohio is now offering four variations of tractor-drawn aerial ladders. The varia­ tions include an SLTDA 105-foot with or without pump and tank and the SLTDA 01 with or without pump and tank. The 105-footer utilizes a four-sec­ tion ladder and the 101-footer utilizes a five section ladder. Our state does not have a Sutphen tiller, so we are stepping out of character in showing a photo from an out-of-state track for illustrative pur­ poses. The photo is of a SLTDA 105 from Huber Heights, OH. It has a Monarch chassis, 1500-gpm pump and 300-gallon water tank. There are two dealers selling Sutphen in our state. For more information contact www. sut­ phen.com Among the other photos are two Hor­ ton Type I ambulances from Rob­ binsville Township (Mercer County).

They were ordered together, but deliv­ ered separately. Next is two Spartan ER pumpers from Fairview (Bergen County). One is a standard pumper and the other a rescue pumper with NXT de­ sign. The next is a Pierce pumper from Little Silver and finally a Custom Fire pumper from Atlantic Highlands (both Monmouth County).

In apparatus news, the Bridgeport VFC in Logan Township (Gloucester County) received an E-ONE Typhoon pumper. It has a Cummins X12, 500 hp diesel engine, Hale Qmax 2000-gpm pump, 780-gallon water tank, TFT deck gun and Fire Tech scene lighting. Also Alloway Township (Salem County) re­ ceived an E-ONE rescue pumper. It has a Spartan FC-94 chassis, 1500-gpm pump and 1000-gallon water tank.

The Elizabeth Police (Union County) received a Mobile Command Unit. It is a Freightliner MT-55 chassis with a Utilimaster body.

The Eastampton Fire Department (Burlington County) ordered a utility truck. It will have an International MV607 chassis and Toyne body.

Campbell Supply Co., LLC received an order from the Villas VFD in Lower Township (Cape May County) for a Smeal 77-foot quint. It will be on a Metro Star chassis and have a 1500-gpm pump and 400-gallon water tank. Also, the Town Bank VFC in the same town­ ship has ordered a dive unit to be built

by E.V.I on a Freightliner chassis.

Blaze Emergency Equipment has de­ livered a replacement tanker for the one severely damaged when the Woodland Township fire station in Chatsworth (Burlington County) was plowed into by a vehicle in September of 2024. The new tanker is an Alexis (like the one damaged) with a Freightliner M2-106 chassis, Cummins L9,360 hp diesel en­ gine, Waterous CXVC20, 1500-gpm pump, 3000-gallon poly wetside water tank, heavy duty stainless steel body and Whelen scene lighting.

Defender Emergency Products has made two Rosenbauer deliveries. The first is to New Brunswick (Middlesex County) and is a Cobra 100-foot mid­ mount tower. The second is to Kenil­ worth (Union County) and is a King Cobra rear-mount tower ladder with ar-

Budd Lake C rew s H andle U nusual R oadw ay Hazard BUDD LAKE, NJ - Due to a debris hazard involving a dropped pallet of eggs, the Budd Lake Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene at Route 46 and Mount Olive Road, April 13th. Crews arrived to find the roadway covered, creating slippery conditions and traffic concerns. Another incident in­ volving a pallet of eggs falling on the ramp connecting Inter­ state 80 eastbound to Route 46 was reported while units were in operation. To maintain traffic flow and handle that scene, more resources were assigned. Firefighters cleared the rub­ ble, secured both sites, and worked with nearby authorities.

Shortly after, regular traffic operations resumed with no re­ ported injuries.

Arcing Power Lines Ignite Parked Car in Sparta SPARTA, NJ — The Sparta Township Fire Department re­ sponded to Alpine Trail on March 17th for a reported brush fire involving downed power lines. Engine 3, Engine 7, Chief 1, and Deputy Chief 10 responded. When crews arrived, they discovered that an unattended parked car had been set on fire by arcing from energized cables. Firefighters created a safe perimeter and controlled the situation until utility tech­ nicians could arrive because of the high-voltage hazard.

Crews were able to completely put out the car fire when Jer­ sey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) de-energized the area.
