BERGENFIELD, NJ - At approximately 5:00 a.m. on February 10, 2026, Bergenfield firefighters along with automatic aid from Dumont were dispatched to 107 Roosevelt Ave. for a reported basement fire. Chief Ryan Zadrozna arrived on scene with heavy smoke from the basement and requested a working fire assignment.

Camden Fire Department Honors its Fallen Brother from Tragic LODD In a tragic accident, on Febru­ ary 5, 2026, after performing rou­ tine maintenance on Camden's Fireboat 1, FF Fioward Bennett fell into the water at the marina adjacent to the Delaware River.

J ump to f iie # Fie was immedi- 021 12 61 6 2 ately rushed to the local trauma center in Camden where doctors and staff worked on him, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. A Line o f Duty Death is something that no fire depart­ ment wants to face, but area fire departments and other public safety entities have surrounded the Bennett family and Camden Fire Department with enormous love and support. In times o f unimaginable tragedy, the fire service com es together to comfort and support one o f their own and they did it remarkably.

FF Fioward Bennett was a 27 year veteran o f the Camden Fire Department, serving many years in Engine Company 1 which is also the assigned unit to staff the Fireboat. Fioward was highly skilled at all things fireboat and loved doing his part in keeping the Fireboat operational. FF Fioward Bennett was a mild mannered man who loved his jo b and the fire­ fighters he worked with. The feel­ ing was mutual from his brothers and sisters in the department.

On February 11th, Brother Bennett would take his last ride on a fire truck as he was honored with a Line o f Duty Death service and

Celebration o f Life before being laid to rest. Many family, friends, firefighters, and public safety members were in attendance and surrounded the Bennett family and Camden Fire Department members with love as they paid their re­ spects in tribute to a fallen brother for a life w ell lived in service to others. FF Fioward Bennett was posthumously promoted to the rank o f Captain. Fioward's wife, Fran, shared a loving tribute o f her hus­

band with those in attendance.

The Camden County Emerald Society Pipes and Drums together with other area Emerald Societies paid tribute to Captain Fioward Bennett with renditions o f G od Bless America and Amazing Grace.

The Bennett family and the Cam ­ den Fire Department are very ap­ preciative for the love and support that has been shown to them.

Monmouth County Fire Marshal Fred M igliaccio Retires HOWELL TOWNSHIP, NJ - Fred Migliaccio's retirement from the Monmouth County Fire Marshal's Office was acknowl­ edged by the Southard Fire Department No. 1. Migliaccio pro­ vided advice on fire investigations, code enforcement, and scene safety while working closely with local fire depart­ ments around Monmouth County. During emergency re­ sponses, inspections, and post-incident follow-ups, members of Southard Fire Department No. 1 saw that his availability and experience were invaluable resources.

Dryer Fire Contained a t B rig an tine Home BRIGANTINE, NJ - When Brigantine Fire and EMS Department personnel arrived at a reported structure fire at a single-fam­ ily home on January 28th, they discovered a dryer fire that had been limited to its original location. The house was oc­ cupied at the time of the occurrence, but both occupants were able to safely leave before the fire service arrived. There were no reported injuries. Firefighters observed that there was a lot of smoke throughout the house, but confirmed that the fire did not spread beyond the utility room. In addition to doing ventilation to get rid of smoke from the house, crews thoroughly checked for fire extension.

Vehicle Overturns A fte r S triking Parked Car in Egg Harbor Twp. EGG HARBOR TWP., NJ - On January 13th at 5:38 p.m., per­ sonnel of the Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company and the Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Company were dispatched to Northwood Avenue in Egg Harbor Township for a reported rollover motor vehicle accident involving a parked car. Cardiff units responded with Rescue 1517 and Engine 1512, and fire­ fighters assisted on the site. Upon arrival, responders dis­ covered a vehicle that had toppled after colliding with a parked car. The crash resulted in no reported injuries. The Egg Harbor Township Police Department investigated the in­ cident. Craig Thompson, Cardiff Assistant Chief, was in com­ mand of the scene. After securing the scene and finishing operations, fire units returned to duty.

Rapid medical assistance was rendered from a line para­ medic. Resuscitation attempts, however, were unsuc­ cessful and Firefighter/Sawyer Romero passed away.

Kentucky: Brian Hatt, 51 Rank: Lieutenant Incident Date: Aug. 22, 2025 Death Date: Aug. 22, 2025 Fire Department: Raywick Fire Department Initial Summary: On August 22, 2025, Lieutenant

Brian Hatt was driving a fire department pumper as he was responding to a mutual aid call. During the re­ sponse, the vehicle veered out of control, hit an embank­ ment, and overturned. Lieutenant Hatt was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled. Lieutenant Hatt was flown by helicopter from the scene and transported to a hospital where he passed away on August 25, 2025, from the in­ juries sustained in the accident. Another firefighter who was a passenger in the vehicle was also flown by heli­ copter to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Virginia: Mack G. Mays Jr., 47 Rank: Assistant Chief Incident Date: July 9, 2025 Death Date: July 10,2025 Fire Department: Monelison Volunteer Fire

Department Initial Summary: On July 9, 2025, Assistant Chief

Mack G. Mays Jr. responded to a false alarm at a commercial building. After returning home, he began experiencing chest pain and was found collapsed in­ side his house the following day, within 24 hours of responding to the alarm. Assistant Chief Mays was pronounced deceased due to a cardiovascular event.

West Virginia: Steven Dale Griffith, 66 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: March 1,2025 Death Date: March 3, 2025 Fire Department: Danville Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: On March 1, 2025, Firefighter Steven

Griffith responded with the Danville Volunteer Fire De­ partment to assist EMS with forcible entry into a resi­ dence. Within 24 hours of this response, Firefighter Griffith suffered a cardiac event and was transported to a local hospital. He was later transferred to a medical cen­ ter where he passed away on March 3, 2025.

Ohio: Douglas William Thompson, 65 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: Sept. 4, 2025 Death Date: Sept. 5,2025 Fire Department: Warren Township Volunteer Fire

Department Initial Summary: On September 4, 2025, Firefighter

Douglas Thompson participated in fire department train­ ing from 7 to 9 p.m. Within 24 hours of the training, Firefighter Thompson suffered a cardiac event at home and passed away.

HAWORTH 1ST RESPONDER, A PIONEER FOR WOMEN UPS & DOWNS Notes from Ron Jeffers

Rosemary “Granny”Weyer, 87, became a volunteer firefighter in Haworth in 1979 when few doors were open to wom en in the fire service. She was the first female firefighter in the department, and she is widely regarded as the first female firefighter in Bergen County.

Firefighter Weyer earned respect and, “stood shoulder to shoulder with her brothers in the firehouse,” according to a department Facebook post.

Firefighter Weyer passed away on February 6th after a battle with can­ cer.

She graduated from Englew ood School o f Nursing and, in later years, she attended Union C ollege to receive her paramedic certifica­ tion. Weyer worked in a ob-gyn of­ fice for 30-years and then served as a paramedic for six-years.

As a volunteer first responder in Haworth, she served as captain o f the ambulance corps, and as fire de­ partment secretary. During her long tenure, Weyer was given the nick­ name o f “Granny.”In addition, she was secretary o f the New Jersey & New York Volunteer Firemen's A s­ sociation.

Firefighter Weyer broke many barriers, and she was a mentor to many.

UPS: Katie Barnes has been ap­ pointed as a career firefighter in Monroe Township Fire District 3.

DOWNS: Som e 60 residents at the Whiting Gardens Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, in Manchester Twp., were evacuated after freezing pipes caused issues with the sprin­ kler system on Feb. 3rd, according to the NY Daily News. The resi­ dents had to leave the building and were transported to facilities in Toms River and Trenton.

UPS: Steve Kraemer has been promoted to Chief o f the Hamilton Fire Department.

DOVtdSTS: Firefighters battled a multi-alarm fire in a commercial building in Bemardsville, February 7th, in below-zero temperatures. It took five hours to bring the fire under control, according to News

UPS: The Garfield Fire Depart­ ment has honored Firefighter Ed­ ward S. Kovach for his 50-years o f service with Company 5.

DOWNS: One person died as the result o f an early-morning fire in a Cedarbrook av. dwelling in South Plainfield, Feb. 4th, according to News 12. Two other residents es­ caped with minor injuries. Three first responders were treated for minor injuries.

UPS: David Wikilanski has been promoted to Deputy Fire C hief in New Brunswick.

DOWNS: At 12:15 am on Febru­ ary 19th, Newark fire units were dispatched to a reported truck fire on Doremus av. Firefighters found three electric tractor cabs fully in­ volved, a trailer burning, and minor extension to a warehouse. Fire blan­ kets were deployed and a Level I haz mat was transmitted. Operations extended until approximately 3:30 am, according to reports.

UPS: Newly promoted fire cap­ tains in New Brunswick are Peter Ohliger and Robert Boyle.

DOWNS: Firefighters battled a 3alarm fire in the Me Wayne Ductile Plant, inPhillipsburg, February 8th.

The 1,000-square-foot building's “paint room”was “fully engulfed,” according to The Express Times. All employees were safely evacuated.

UPS: John Seelinger has been promoted to fire lieutenant in New Brunswick.

DOWNS: Eight cats died as the result o f a fire in a Highland av. dwelling in River Vale, February 17th. Another cat was treated by the River Vale Ambulance Corps and transported to an animal hospital in Paramus, according to an ambu­ lance spokesman. The cat was “doing well.”

UPS: New firefighters in New Brunswick are Daniel Aparicio, Xavier Cladd, Michael Cruz-Perez, Anthony Fulwider, Jordan Keefe and Bryan Latham Jr. DOWNS: An 85-year-old woman died as the result o f a 2-alarm fire

involving a C ollege Dr. apartment in Jersey City, January 27th.

UPS: Members o f the Newark Fire Department helped retired Fire Captain Theodore Popovich cele­ brate his 1OOtli birthday, in February.

About a dozen firefighters. Engine 10's apparatus and the department's pipe band visited the captain at his Cranford home. He was presented with a plaque recognizing his 30years o f service. Captain Popovich is also a W W II hero receiving a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

“We're all together from day one until out last days,”said Fire Chief Del Ortiz.

DOWNS: An overnight fire at a Winston Drive 31-story high-rise forced evacuation o f occupants into the blizzard, Feb. 23rd. The resi­ dents were taken down stairs to the lobby, where older residents were given priority to remain inside when space got tight, according to Inde­ pendent Online News. There were no injuries. Firefighters quickly ex­ tinguished the fire, allowing resi­ dents to return to their condominiums. Residents praised the quick and professional work o f building staff and firefighters from Cliffside Park, Fort Lee and Edgewater.

UPS: On February 28th, the H oboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps celebrated their 55thanniversary serving the city.

DOWNS: Several dogs were killed as the result o f a fire at the

Police officers from Hopatcong and Stanhope, members o f the OSCAR staff, employees from Lakeside Construction and by­ standers acted swiftly to rescue the majority o f animals prior to the ar­ rival o f fire units, according to re­ ports. Several dogs were lost in the area. The facility holds about 40

dogs.

MEMO: New Jersey firefighters mourn the loss o f Camden Fire­ fighter Howard Bennett who died in the Line-of-Duty on February 5th.

Also, the loss o f retired Hackensack Lt. James Walker III who died o f 911 related cancer. Both were de­ scribed as valued members o f their departments and mentors.

Camden F ire fig h te rs B a ttle Stubborn Gas-Fed Fire CAMDEN, NJ - On February 9, 2026, at approximately 1:34 p.m., the Camden County Fire Alarm R oom transmitted a Cam­ den box for the re­ port o f a dwelling fire in the area o f 1229 Haddon Av­ enue. Squad 7 ar­ Jum p t o file # rived and reported 020926156 smoke showing from 1260 Fiberty r*4 | Street, which is a 2story, ordinary con- 3 ® s t r u c t e d , single-family, vacant dwelling.

Squad 7 made the initial push to the interior and encountered holes in the floor on the first floor with an active fire in the base­ ment, which was spreading. Bat­ talion Chief 1, Dan Baker, arrived and reported an odor o f natural gas com ing from the dwelling.

With the conditions o f the struc­ ture in question and the odor o f natural gas, the order was given to evacuate the building and tran­ sition to a defensive attack.

Crews set up multiple hose lines to keep the fire in check and used caution as to not extinguish the active gas-fed fire in the base­ ment. Public Service Gas arrived on location and worked to shut o ff the natural gas supply to the house, but were unable to do so.

They called a backhoe crew out to break the concrete at the side­ walk to give them access to the natural gas pipe.

Public Service Gas also ad­ vise the Incident Commander to keep the firefighting crews at a safe distance until the natural gas could be shut down. Shutting the supply down w ould take some time and the fire grew in inten­ sity, but was kept in check as to not spread to adjacent buildings.

Second Alarm Fire Damages Fair Lawn Home; Kitten Rescued FAIR LAWN. NJ - At 9:55 p.m. on January 21.2026. the Fair Lawn Fire Department was called to a reported house fire in the 100 block of 3rd Street. Upon arrival.

Chief Michael Salvini sent out a general alarm, which was then up­ graded to a second alarm in order to keep the borough covered.

About 45 firefighters from the four Fair Lawn fire departments arrived on the scene. In roughly 35 minutes, the fire in a bedroom on the second level was extinguished.

Crews remained on scene until around midnight conducting over­ haul. The structure sustained major damage.

A kitten was saved and re­ united with its family when three

Fair Lawn Police Department offi­ cers entered the smoke-filled home during operations. As a pre­ caution against smoke inhalation, one police officer was sent to the hospital. After receiving on-site care, one resident was discharged.

The Fair Lawn Office of Emergency Management assisted with relocating 10 residents. The fire remains under investigation by the Fair Lawn Fire Prevention Bu­ reau.

Early-Morning Three-Alarm Fire Tears Through Bergenfield Home BERGENFIELD, NJ - At ap­ proximately 5:00 a.m. on Febru­ ary 10, 2026, Bergenfield fire­ fighters along with automatic aid from Dumont were dis­ patched to 107 R oosevelt Ave. for a reported base­ ment fire. C hief Ryan Zadrozna ar­ rived on scene with heavy smoke from the basement and requested a working fire as­ signment.

Engine 1 hit a hydrant, laid into the scene and stretched an initial attack line to the basement.

Firefighters were met with heavy fire and made an aggressive inte­ rior attack. Additional lines were stretched as fire extended to the first floor and vented from the Delta side. A second alarm was transmitted as command ordered the evacuation o f all companies.

A 3rd alarm w ould be requested as firefighters hit the heavy fire from the exterior as crews re­ grouped to re-enter the dwelling.

Firefighters were able to knock down the heavy fire on the first floor and basement, but not before the fire extended to the second floor. Englewood's truck vented the r o o f just before fire vented from multiple windows on the second floor and eventually through the roof. Multiple lines were used to bring the fire under control as firefighters chased fire through the balloon-frame home.

Mutual aid responded from Dumont, Englewood, Teaneck, N ew Milford, Tenafly, Closter, Cresskill, River E dge and Oradell. No injuries were re­ ported, and the cause remains under investigation.

To free a trapped driver. Squad 23 worked with the Elackensack Fire D e­ partment Rescue 1 and the Ridgefield Park Fire Depart­ ment.

Guillermo Mollins, an off-duty firefighter with the City o f Newburgh Fire Department (NY), was the driver and was seriously hurt in the collision. Before he was sent for medical attention, firefighters re­ moved him from the car using coor­ dinated extrication tactics.

Mollins was discharged from Elackensack University Medical Center on January 19th. In honor of his advancement, firefighters from Teaneck, Elackensack, Ridgefield Park, and Newburgh took part in a clap-out ceremony. Members o f the fire service community have organ­ ized fundraising events to help with continuing medical costs while he recovers.

Oradell Firefighters B attle Same House Fire Twice in Eight Hours ORADELL, NJ - Firefighters would fight a fire in the same home twice within 8 hours o f each other, Saturday night and Sunday morn­ ing, in frigid temperatures.

Around 8:30 p.m. on February 7th, Oradell firefight­ ers were dispatched to 43 Poplar Ave. for a reported house fire.

First arriving units were met with heavy fire and smoke show­ ing from the front of the home and trans­ mitted the working fire. An initial attack line was stretched to the interior and quickly knocked down the heavy fire. A second alarm was transmitted to bring additional resources to as­ sist with opening up and checking for extension. The fire was brought under control within an hour and battled in single-digit temperatures.

Mutual aid from River Edge, New Milford, Paramus and Emer­ son assisted on scene. Firefighters would be called back to the fire scene just after 6:00 a.m. for a rekin­ dle with heavy fire showing from the second floor and through the roof. Firefighters would spend a few hours placing the fire under control.

Through the years, they also had many interesting makes o f apparatus. They even had tw o C adillac ch ie f cars at different times. After the dedication and in­ troduction there are three sections with a total o f five chapters detail­ ing records o f their apparatus through the years. Many quality black and white as w ell as co lo r photos apparatus are intertwined in the pages. There is also in for­ m ation about the manufacturers.

The A ppendix covers ch ie f’ s b u g­ g ies from 1893-2007, Patents by SFFD members, 1875-1934,Corporation Yards and Ladder Shop, Horses, St. Francis H ook & Lad­ der Society-SFFD M uster Team and Fireboats and the Airport Land D ivision. Oradell Firefighters Complete Ice Rescue on Hackensack River ORADELL, NJ - The Oradell Fire Department was called to Grove Street on January 16th at the Hackensack River for an ice rescue involving two people who were stuck on a river island. In order to safely reach the island and return both people to the mainland, firefighters used an ice rescue sled. Operations were carried out in accordance with established cold-water and ice res­ cue protocols, paying close attention to ice conditions and responder safety. In order to help with situational awareness during the rescue, the department collaborated with Oradell Emer­ gency Management, which offered aerial support utilizing a drone fitted with thermal imaging.

All parties were securely assisted, and the incident was handled without any injuries.

Council Honors Oceanville Firefighters for December Condo Rescue OCEANVILLE, NJ -At a Gal­ loway Township Council meeting on January 27th, members o f the Oceanville Vol. Fire Company re­ ceived recognition for their response to a structure lire that occurred on December 10, 2025, in the Smithville area o f Galloway Town­ ship.

Firelighters Nicholas Stewart and John Parker entered a blazing condo­ minium complex to reach and retrieve an unconscious male occupant, according to statements made during the hearing. The male is still recuperating after being saved and taken to the hospital.

During the presentation. Chief Uhl noted that this marked the sec­ ond life-saving rescue by Galloway Township firefighters in less than six months, highlighting the value o f training and coordinated response.

Along with other mutual aid partners who supported operations throughout the township, the com ­ pany also thanked Pomona Vol. Fire Co. No. 3, Bayview Vol. Fire Co., Germania Vol. Fire Co., South Egg Harbor Fire Co., Galloway Twp. Ambulance Squad, Galloway Twp. Police Department, and Galloway OEM.

Crash w ith Entrapment Prompts M ulti-U nit Response in Deptford Township DEPTFORD TWP., NJ - On January 14th, a car accident in­ volving entrapment in a construc­ tion zone along Delsea Drive prompted the dispatch o f Station 93, Station 9-4, and Squad 9-2.

Two individuals with non-lifethreatening injuries were trans­ ported. Union Fire Company #1 coordinated with EMS units to handle the response. The Deptford Police Department and the New Jersey State Police are looking into the collision.

Truck Fire Brought Under Control

by Hackensack Crews HACKENSACK, NJ - On January 22nd, the 2nd Platoon of the City of Hackensack Fire Depart­ ment responded to a reported truck fire on Route 80 West. When firemen arrived, they discov­ ered a vehicle fire involving a commercial truck and started fighting it. After quickly containing the fire, firefighters finished overhaul to look for any hot spots that might still be there.

ER FD Truck 1 re­ spon ded and, upon arrival, operated alongside Carlstadt Fire Department crews.

guishment and overhaul.

Deptford Firefighters B attle Another Fire in Sub Freezing Temperatures DEPTFORD, NJ - On Sunday evening, February 8, 2026, at ap­ proximately 8:35 P.M., the Gloucester County Fire Alarm R oom dispatched the Deptford Fire Department and automatic aid companies to 436 C ollege Blvd. for the report o f a dwelling fire.

First reports were that a propane fire pit exploded.

Additional reports were that the back o f the house was on fire. Deptford Fire Chief 901, Rick Thomas, arrived and reported heavy fire showing from the second floor o f a twostory, wood-frame, single-family dwelling. Fie ordered a 2 1/2 hose line through the front door to at­ tack the fire.

The water supply was tem­ porarily lost and the companies were evacuated from the dwelling until the water supply was re-es­ tablished. Additional hose lines were stretched and operated until the fire was brought under control in about an hour. This was the 5th working fire in Deptford this year.

WASHINGTON TWP., NJ - On January 26th, a reported house fire prompted the Washington Township Fire Department, Glassboro Fire Department, and Mantua Township Fire Department to respond to the 700 block of Hurffville Crosskeys Road. Firefighters found a working fire at the house as soon as they arrived. Crews were able to quickly put out the fire and checked for extension to make sure it hadn't spread to other parts of the building. There were no reported injuries. Additionally, Washington Township EMS provided on-site assistance and was ready to offer medical assistance if necessary.

As part of a mutual aid working fire assignment, the Wyckoff Vol­ unteer Fire Department sent Truck 241 to Waldwick on January 28th. Local units working at a reported structure fire received as­ sistance from the response. Initial reports from the scene state that the fire was quickly put out by the Waldwick Fire Department's first-arriving engine company. As instructed by command, other companies, such as Truck 241, helped with routine fireground op­ erations and assistance.

The fire depart­ ment was dis­ patched at 2:12 a.m. for a fire alarm at 339 Broad Ave. As first due fire­ fighters investi­ gated, they discovered that a fire broke out in the rear o f the building that housed the Totowah Restaurant and Ahjae G ookbap at ground floor and an apartment above, running the length o f the 2!4story brick building. The fire rap­ idly extended to the second floor and cockloft o f the building.

During the early stages o f the fire and entire operation, fire­ fighters were faced with several frozen hydrants as temperatures approached zero, according to re­ sponders. Fire broke through the roof and master streams from Pal­ isades Park Ladder 1 and Fort Lee Ladder 1 went into operation in front o f the building as Engle­ w ood Truck 1 went into operation in the rear. Anthony's Pharmacy, which was an exposure to the Delta side, suffered minor dam­ age. DPW salt trucks were called to the scene to salt the icy fire ground.

The Bergen County Prosecu­ tor's Arson Investigations Unit re­ sponded to determine the cause.

The Countywide Emergency R e­ sponse Team provided a warming tent and rehab for firefighters and a warming bus from Bergen County and NJ Transit was brought in. N o injuries to any firefighters were reported.

The Palisades Park blaze was one o f several fires in Bergen County. The others took place in Oradell, C liffside Park, Lodi, Leonia and Wallington in less than 24 hours. Mutual aid came from Leonia, C liffside Park, Fairview, Englewood, Cliffside Park, Fort Lee, Edgewater, En­ glew ood Cliffs and Bogota. Other out o f town assistance came from Teaneck, Hackensack, Little Ferry and Tenafly to stand by at the firehouse.

W orking Fire Dispatched a t M ontvale Single-Fam ily Home MONTVALE, NJ - The Montvale Fire Department was called to a single-family home on January 28th at around 8:02 a.m. due to a report of smoke coming from a wood-burning stove in the back of the house. A working fire assignment was transmitted after Captain Hopper, who was the first on the scene, discovered severe fire conditions at both the front and rear doors. Deputy Chief Cintineo was in charge of operations after Chief Gibbons established authority. For around three hours, firefighters worked on the spot to contain the fire and finish the overhaul.

There were no reported injuries. Mutual aid fire departments arrived to support on-scene oper­ ations and suppression efforts.

Firefighters Contain Nail Salon Fire in Hillsborough Twp. HILLSBOROUGH TWP., NJ At at 8:02 a.m. on January 18th, the Flagtown Fire/Rescue - Hillsbor­ ough Volunteer Fire Co. #1 re­ sponded to a commercial building lire after units were called in due to smoke coming from a facility at 256 U.S. Route 206.

First arriving companies con­ firmed that there was a fire in a nail shop.

Findeme provided RIT, and more engines from Manville and Raritan responded. While Ladder 36 carried out primary searches and found no occupants. Engine 10 approached and ran a single hose line. Other companies assisted with ventilation and checked for fire extension into adjoining spaces.

Although smoke damage was recorded in a number o f nearby businesses, the fire was restricted to the original building. For around 90 minutes, units from many Hillsbor­ ough fire district companies, as well as Neshanic, Manville, and Raritan, were on scene. Hillsborough Police and RWJ EMS were on standby.

The law encourages up­ grades to personal protection equip­ ment used on the fireground and han­ dles the evolving circumstances faced by first responders.

M odem PPE is essential for lowering exposure risks and injuries as building materials, fire behavior, and operating dangers continue to change. State-level action, accord­ ing to fire service experts, enables departments to adapt to these devel­ opments while upholding uniform safety standards.

Firefighters Battle Intense Flames, Icy Conditions at Overnight Garfield Blaze GARFIELD, NJ - An overnight fire destroyed a Garfield home in the early morn­ ing hours o f January 30th.

At 12:09 a.m., companies were dispatched to 27 Hartman St. As first due chiefs ar­ rived, a fire on the 2nd floor was d is­ covered in the bath­ room. A working fire was transmit­ ted, bringing a full general alarm re­ sponse plus mutual aid units from Saddle B rook and Wallington to the scene.

The fire quickly extended to the upper floor through the walls, and conditions worsened very quickly. Companies started to re­ port several frozen hydrants and a call for additional engines from E lm w ood Park, Lodi and Rochelle Park were brought to the scene. With Heavy fire on the second floor and attic, Passaic Truck l's tower ladder and Garfield Truck 4's ladder pipe went into operation once addi­ tional water supplies were estab­ lished along with numerous outside hand lines.

Heavy fire vented through the r oof and out several w indow s at the blaze's height.

N o serious injuries were im ­ mediately reported, although icy conditions produced several slipand-falls. Garfield DPW salt trucks were brought in to salt the fire fire ground.

Mutual aid cover companies in city firehouses came from Fair Lawn, Paramus, M aywood, Pa­ terson, and Clifton. County Wide Emergency Services tended to the responders for rehab, and the Company 5 firehouse just around the corner from the scene was opened to firefighters to warm up as the outside temperatures were in the single-digits.

A faulty bathroom vent fan was suspected as the cause o f the fire, although the official cause it is still under investigation.

Bay Head Fire Department Responds to Two-Vehicle Crash w ith Overturn BAY HEAD, NJ - On February 4th, at approximately 11:30 a.m., the Bay Head Fire Department, along with the Mantoloking Fire Company, responded to a twovehicle motor vehi­ cle crash at the intersection o f Main Avenue and Harris Street, where one vehicle was reported overturned.

Upon arrival, emergency re­ sponders found that occupants from both vehicles had already been assisted out by responding po­ lice officers. Fire units remained on scene to provide scene safety and hazard control measures until both vehicles were removed from the roadway. Injured parties were eval­ uated and treated by Point Pleasant First Aid & Emergency Squad. The crash was investigated by the Bay Head Police Department.

The department extended its appreciation to its automatic aid partners, including Point Pleasant Fire Department Station 75 and Point Boro EMS, for their coordi­ nated response and support during the incident.

January 1st - The South Wall Fire Rescue Department announced the passing of Past Chief Thomas E. Johnson, a longtime member known to many as Tommy. Johnson began working for the depart­ ment in 1986 and held a number of positions before earning the position of Chief of Department in 1998. By the end of 1999, he had served as chief. Johnson continued to respond to incidents in the Township of Wall while supporting daily operations, department management, and training during his years of service. During a time of change for the department in the late 1990s, members praised his unwavering leadership.

Deputy C hief Buzby arrived and verified a trash truck fire.

C hief Walley ar­ rived and took com ­ mand, and Ladder 5 responded with one firefighter on duty. There was a re­ quest for an off-duty staff recall.

One off-duty firefighter from En­ gine 54 and two firefighters from Engine 51 responded. Suppression efforts were complicated by the lo­ cation o f the fire within the truck and below-freezing temperatures.

The BargaintownFire Co. and the Northfield FD contributed more personnel and station cover­ age. In about 50 minutes, the fire was put out and under control. No injuries were reported. Assistance was also provided by the Linw ood Department o f Public Works.

OLIVE TWP., NJ - A car overturned into a river on January 25th, close to the intersection of River Road and Flanders Draketown Road during a winter storm, prompting the Budd Lake Volunteer Fire Department to respond to their first weather-related emergency of the season. The car was par­ tially submerged when firefighters arrived. Crews on scene secured the area and help aid residents. Road closures were not necessary, and only minor injuries were reported.

ERFD Truck 1 was dispatched and arrived on scene to find fire department units actively op­ erating at a commercial occupancy. Truck 1 members inte­ grated with on-scene companies and were assigned to critical fireground tasks, including primary searches, venti­ lation operations, and overhaul. Crews worked efficiently alongside mutual aid partners to help bring the incident under control. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation by local authorities.

Paterson Firefighters Overcome More Problems with the Intense Cold SOMERS POINT VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY 1 On 8th February 8th, at approximately 11:00 p.m., Somers Point Engine 44 responded to Galloway as part of a Tanker Task Force assignment. The crew assisted with fire suppression efforts and returned to the city at approximately 3:00 a.m.

PATERSON, NJ - A week after the arctic blast that covered the north­ east caused major issues for the Pa­ terson Fire Department, the PFD faced another multiple-alarm that the single-digit temperatures made fire­ fighting difficult.

On February 7th at approxi­ mately 2:00 P.M., fire units were dis­ patched to 272 Union Avenue. Heavy fire was showing from the rear o f a 2 Vi story frame dwelling with a large 2 Vi story former tavern undergoing renovations on the “ B ”side and a two-story frame on the “ D ”side, all separated by narrow alleyways.

A second alarm was transmitted as a 2 Vi” line was stretched. Two frozen hydrants were attempted with one completely snapped. A third alarm was sounded as companies worked off tank water as further away hydrants were accessed.

Flames were impinging on both ex­ posures as well as exposure “C 1”on Preakness Ave., behind the tavern.

By about 2:15 P.M., two continuous water sources were established. Fire

in the exposures were knocked down before 2:50 P.M. The main fire build­ ing continued to vent smoke as Fadder 1 opened the roof.

The fire was placed PWH at 3:15 P.M., and companies began to pick up. Fifteen residents from six fami­ lies were displaced, but no serious in­ juries were reported. Passaic and Clifton provided mutual aid at the scene, while others covered fire­ houses. The North Jersey Fire Can­ teen once again provided assistance in warming up.

Horse Rescued by Amwell Valley Fire Company in Coordinated Ice-Covered Slope Operation HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ - On Wednesday, February 5th, at approximately 7:46 p.m., the Amwell Valley Fire Company was dispatched to B ox 48-47 for a large animal rescue after a horse becam e unable to stand on a snow-covered incline. Units from 48 Fire, 48 Rescue, and 49 Rescue with its Heavy Rescue, along with the fam ily’ s veterinarian, re­ sponded quickly to the scene.

Crews arrived to find the horse lying on its side in icy con ­ ditions, presenting a challenging and time-sensitive situation.

Working carefully and in coord i­ nation, rescuers utilized special­ ized lifting straps and manual effort to slide the animal up the slight slope to a safer position.

thodically rolled onto its opposite side to improve circulation and positioning. Follow ing several at­ tempts and close monitoring, the horse successfully regained its footing.

The N ew Jersey State Police assisted as the animal was safely led back into the barn by its owner. Fire officials praised the teamwork and calm execution o f the rescue, highlighting the impor­ tance o f specialized training and inter-agency cooperation in large animal emergencies.

Firefighter and Ex-Chief John J. Rinaldi has responded to his Last Alarm. Ex-Chief Rinaldi, a veteran of over 40 years in the Volunteer Firefighting Service passed away on Thursday, 8 January 2026.

John was a member of three different Volunteer Fire Departments, Fort Lee, River Vale, and Old Tappan, during his firefighting ca­ reer. During those years he served as a Fireman, Fire Officer up through the ranks to Chief of Department, and later as a "senior man" who shared his knowledge and experience with younger members of the Fire Service. Members of the three Fire Depart­ ments in which he served "turned out" to render honors as Fire­ fighter Rinaldi responded to his Last Alarm. An Honor Guard was posted by his casket during the viewing hours, his casket was placed upon a ceremonial fire engine and passed in review past the Quarters of both the River Vale and Old Tappan Volunteer Fire Departments. The apparatus bearing his casket paused in front of the Quarters of the Old Tappan Volunteer Fire Department as a Ceremonial Last Alarm was transmitted during which the Dis­ patcher intoned "Firefighter and Ex-Chief John J. Rinaldi you stand relieved, we'll take it from here."

2-Alarm Fire Damages Lakeview Apartments Office in Magnolia MAGNOLIA, NJ - A working fire at the Lakeview Apartments Leasing and Management Office in the Chews Landing Fire Department's first-due area on January 10th prompted members of Mag­ nolia Fire Company 29 to respond as Quint Company 29 on the box alarm. The incident was raised to All Hands and a second alarm because of the fire conditions after Chief 82 arrived with fire show­ ing. For the duration of the incident, Chief 29 was designated as the Incident Safety Officer. Quint 29 served as a ladder company on the Alpha side to facilitate fire stream operations and enhance tower ladder access. After that, crews helped with coordinated overhaul and suppression. There was no spread of the fire to neighboring housing complexes. There were no reported injuries.

PATERSON, NJ - A s the snow belted our area in January and Feb­ ruary, a specialized pierce o f city fire apparatus was given added re­ sponsibilities. A former military truck with high suspension that al­ low s it to drive through floods, and acquired for just that purpose, was given more responsibility during the winter.

It all started with the snowstorm on January 25th. With large amounts o f snow on the streets, am­ bulances were getting stuck and it was hard for fire apparatus to pass through, according to the Paterson Press. That's when Squad 6A, a sec­ ond piece o f Squad Co. 6, with sus­ pension nearly 3-feet higher that normal fire units and larger and

m wider tires, was pressed into winter duty.

“We came up with a strategy on how we could adapt it," said Deputy C hief Arthur Woods, who oversees the department's special operations.

Before the January storm, the squad refitted the rig by taking o ff the water rescue equipment and replac­ ing it with a portable hydrant, 500feet o f 5 inch hose, 300-feet o f 2 1/2 inch hose, and 200-feet o f 13/4 inch hose. In addition. Squad 6A has towing straps and other equipment to pull out vehicles, such as ambu­ lances, if they are stuck in the snow.

During the extremely low tem­ peratures, additional equipment was added to include torpedo-shaped propane heaters and warming tents.

Squad 6A responded to many calls that included emergency m ed­ ical runs when it was placed into winter service.

Normally, the special operations truck is used for high-water rescue emergencies when the Passaic River pours over its banks, flooding city streets.

Improvise, or think “out o f the box,”as they say, to make more use for your available equipment and apparatus.

When crews arrived, they discovered a dog stuck inside a storm drain. In order to remove the animal without injuring anyone, firefighters worked to safely access the drain. After being successfully set free, the dog was examined on the spot and given back to its owner. There were no reported injuries.

This will be only time that I will use AI to write an article for me. I told it "Write an article in the style o f Didymus McHugh in regard to the downfall o f using artificial intel­ ligence to do your work". Hear it di­ rectly from the mouth o f artificial intelligence:

"When the Machine Learns Your Voice” There is a strange comfort in being answered quickly.

You ask.

It responds.

No waiting. No wrestling. No long walk in the dark.

Artificial intelligence is a re­ markable tool. It gathers fragments o f thought at speeds that would make a scribe weep. It arranges words with alarming competence. It can outline sermons, draft policies, compose poems, and calculate budg­ ets before your coffee cools.

But here is the danger: It can begin to do your wrestling for you.

And wrestling is where the soul is formed.

The Seduction of Efficiency We live in an age that worships efficiency the way older generations worshiped endurance. If something can be done faster, cheaper, smoother— why not?

The farmer knows better.

You cannot hurry seed into har­ vest.

You cannot command roots to deepen by shouting at the soil.

You cannot bypass winter with­ out destroying spring.

Artificial intelligence promises winterless productivity.

And that is not always mercy.

When a preacher lets a machine craft every sermon, when a student lets it form every thought, when a leader lets it draft every convic­ tion— something quiet begins to erode: The muscle o f reflection.

The ache o f doubt.

The discipline o f study.

The humility o f not knowing.

The machine gives answers.

The Illusion of Mastery Another subtle danger is the illu­ sion that we understand what we have not truly labored to leam.

If a system drafts your research paper, your strategic plan, your devo­ tional, your crisis protocol— did you leam it? Or did you simply approve it?

Knowledge without stmggle be­ comes fragile.

The farm teaches this daily.

Fence posts set shallowly will not withstand a storm.

Faith formed without friction will not withstand doubt.

Artificial intelligence can assem­ ble insight.

It cannot give you endurance.

The Slow Death of Silence Perhaps the greatest loss is this: silence.

When we grow uncomfortable, we reach for a prompt.

When we feel uncertain, we ask for instant clarity.

When we feel inadequate, we outsource competence.

But silence is not emptiness.

Silence is the field where God plows the heart.

If we fill every pause with gener­ ated language, we risk losing the quiet place where conviction is bom.

We trade contemplation for consump­ tion.

And eventually, we may forget how to think alone.

And a machine must never decide who you are.

Use it to assist, not replace.

To refine, not originate your con­ science.

To support your calling, not be­ come it.

If you are a chaplain— sit with the grief yourself.

If you are a father— shape the words in your own voice.

If you are a farmer— put your hands in the soil.

If you are a student— wrestle with the text.

Let the machine carry weight.

But do not let it carry your soul.

It is spiritual.

Will we surrender the slow work o f becoming in exchange for the quick reward o f appearing com pe­ tent?

Will we trade scars for sum­ maries?

Will we allow something that can imitate wisdom to replace the process that forms it?

The farm still requires dawn.

The fire still requires courage.

The hospital room still requires presence.

And the human soul still requires struggle.

Do not give that away.

Let the machine serve.

But let your heart remain un­ mechanized."

When you research something for yourself, you invest your time and en­ ergy. You leam and just don't just spit out truth that a machine tells you is the tmth.

“ 911...W hat’s Your Emergency?”

Before reading further, take a moment to give some ap­ plause to an often-overlooked group of people who, without them, would make it impossi­ ble for firefighters (and other first responders) to do their job. Yes, I am talking about the dispatchers. If ever the phrase “Don’t take it out on the mes­ senger” is at its most applica­ ble it would be while interacting with emergency dispatchers. This is simply be­ cause they are only relaying the information that they re­ ceive. Sometimes a confirmed outdoor fire turns out to besomeone chillin’ around the fire pit. But that’s how it was called in and that’s just the na­ ture of the business.

United Communication Center in Rotterdam is the dispatch center for Schenectady County.

There are numerous tasks and trials for dispatchers. Not only in dealing with the public but also the first responders on the other end of the micro­ phone. A common thread for both groups is that dispatch­ ers have to remain calm, fo­ cused and in control at all times, regardless of with whom they are communicat­ ing. If a dispatcher matches the intensity of the caller, then the situation will only escalate.

Overall, caller intensity makes it more difficult to gather accu­ rate data where incomplete in­ formation can potentially endanger the caller and first responders.

Dispatchers are often dealing with high-risk, quickly-evolv­ ing situations and in that sense are no different than other first responders where seconds count. Turning a re­ quest for additional resources into actually mobilizing an extra apparatus off the floor is no easy task. This is especially true when considering other required duties such as enter­ ing data into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, handling radio traffic, monitor­ ing multiple incidents and up­ dating responders with new information.

When communicating with the public, one of the biggest chal-

lenges is that everyone’s situa­ tion is an “emergency”.

Whereas that may sound very unsympathetic it is up to the dispatcher to be able to deci­ pher the true nature of the call.

Dispatchers often have to ask multiple questions to make sure the proper resources are called in. Sometimes callers perceive any questions as in­ action when the reality is that the dispatcher has already started emergency services to them. A second challenge when speaking with the public is that there is a tendency to tell a story while the dispatcher needs to get pertinent informa­ tion quickly and efficiently and does not necessarily have time to let someone ramble on “just the facts, please”.

In some rare circumstances sometimes the system itself can be a challenge. Case in point is the radio systems and frequencies used. Although my experience as a dispatcher is limited, one circumstance that repeatedly surfaced was some first responders using digital radios while others were using an analogue system. Those with digital radios could hear all radio traffic while the ana­ logue users could only hear themselves which made dis­ patching resources a chal­ lenge. Additionally, some first

responders are on a dedicated channel and thus not privy to other radio traffic whereas the dispatcher is handling all radio communications at once.

So, what actually happens when an emergency call comes in? A recent visit to the Universal Communications Center (UCC) in Rotterdam, NY yielded some really interesting observations.

Each dispatcher has multiple screens in front of them each with different functions. This is the CAD system. When some­ one calls “911” their approxi­ mate location is displayed on one screen with data entry on another. The dispatchers listen to the caller and enter informa­ tion based on the caller re­ sponses.

The CAD then displays a number of potential responses. This process re­ peats and continues until the true nature of the call is deci­ phered and the proper emer­ gency services (if any) are dispatched to the location in question.

Because the responses are generated by the CAD system one can draw a conclusion that it takes the human element out.

Perhaps that is true but that is exactly what you want because reading pre- determined re­ sponses allows a dispatcher to remain monotone and not es­

calate the situation. Once the correct emergency type is de­ lineated then the appropriate response is sent. That could be fire, EMS or law enforcement.

Keep in mind that the entire transaction from initial call to dispatched resources may only be a minute or at most two.

Being a dispatcher is a great stepping stone to employment later on as either law enforce­ ment, firefighter and EMT. This is simply because having a working knowledge of some of the behind-the- scenes opera­ tions is invaluable. It’s not going out on a limb to suggest that every firefighter (espe­ cially officers) should visit and talk to the dispatchers that are sending apparatus and/or addi­ tional resources. This will cer­ tainly aid in size-up and decision making on the fireground.

As an example, the CAD will also display for the dispatcher all the available resources that are “on the box” and in what order. Officers on the fireground should also know this information. Typically, all nec­ essary resources (save those that are called for after the ini­ tial call) are dispatched simul­ taneously. The dispatcher will highlight each department and the resources needed i.e. en­

gine, truck, EMS etc., and then click on “send” once which will alert everyone at the same time. Because the CAD can only send one signal at a time if the dispatcher clicks on and sends each resource one at a time it will obviously take longer and may confuse the system with overlapping sig­ nals.

What does it take to be a dis­ patcher? From an educational requirement standpoint typi­ cally only a high school diploma (or equivalent). This is mostly because dispatcher po­ sitions rely heavily on on-thejob training. Working with a certified dispatcher for several weeks or even months newly hired dispatchers will learn the CAD system, basic radio eti­ quette, call talking/questioning, agency policies and standard operating procedures. Addi­ tional requirements may be a first aid/CPR, online coursework, NIMS certifications, background check and possi­ bly a civil service exam.

This article is dedicated to the dispatchers of the City of Saratoga Springs (some of whom contributed to this arti­ cle) and who not only perform above and beyond but always have my safety in mind.

The Hammonton Fire Department announced on January 31st that a number of its members finished their technician-level training and Ice and Cold Water Rescue Operations. As part of a regional initia­ tive to improve winter rescue capabilities, firefighters trained alongside members of Alloway Fire Company and Mullica Township (Elwood). The Gloucester County Fire Academy provided support for the course, which integrated classroom learning with practical experience in real-world settings.

Firefighter/EMT Thomas Malone was featured in the Ridgewood Professional Firefighters FMBA Local 47's "Meet the Members Monday" article on January 12th. Malone, a member of B Platoon, has been with the department since 2024. Outside of work, Malone stays active by going to the gym, running, lifting weights, and golf­ ing with pals. He acknowledges his mother's unwavering support and encouragement in athletics, education, and employment, cit­ ing her as the greatest impact in his life. Malone claimed that after talking to a firefighter in high school and learning about the pro­ fession and the value of helping others, he became interested in the fire service. He emphasizes exercise, a balanced diet, and enough sleep to stay ready. He advises prospective firefighters to take the test, get in touch with current firemen, and ask questions.

report o f a dwelling fire. The box was upgraded to people reported trapped, as occupants were unaccounted for.

Upon arrival, heavy fire was showing from the rear o f the twostory, wood-frame, single-family

dwelling. The fire reportedly started on the deck and quickly spread to the first and second floors. Companies quickly deployed hoselines to knock the fire and initiated searches. The searches proved negative, and the fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes.

Pennsauken Firefighters Receive New Escape Systems and Training PENNSAUKEN, NJ - The Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation has chosen the Pennsauken Fire Department to receive a firefighter safety grant. Each uniformed member will receive a personal escape system from Fire Innovations as part of the award, and All Hands Fire, a longtime department partner, will give practical training. As the department com­ memorates the 21st anniversary of the January 23, 2005 lineof-duty event, the grant recognizes the legacy and sacrifice of six Pennsauken firefighters. Firefighter survivability and operational readiness will be enhanced by the equipment and training, according to department officials.

Fire in Parking Garage a t Hackensack’s Court Plaza Quickly Contained HACKENSACK, NJ - The City o f Hackensack Fire Depart­ ment responded to a reported structure fire at 25 Main Street, com m only known as Court Plaza, at around 10:20 a.m. on January 26th.

Under the direction o f Acting Deputy C h ief Trapani, the 2nd Platoon's firstarriving units dis­ covered a fire in the parking garage's drop ceiling that extended into other locations.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire, evacuated the building, and secured the property's utili­ ties. There were no reported in­ juries. Although the fire is being investigated, it is not yet seen as suspicious.

During operations, mutual aid covered the city and offered on­ site assistance, including E n gle­ wood, Teaneck, Bogota, Maywood, Hasbrouck Heights, and kittle Ferry.

HIGHLAND LAKES FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Highland Lakes Fire Department took delivery of their newest apparatus, Tanker 424, in Janu­ ary. The tanker will improve the department's water supply capabilities, especially in areas without hydrant coverage. Department officials noted that the addition of Tanker 424 strengthens opera­ tional readiness and supports both local responses and mutual aid assignments.

A junior firefighter training session centered on supporting basic life support (BLS) units during emergency calls was conducted by the Washington Township Fire Department on January 21st. Junior members gained knowledge of the role firemen play in assisting EMS operations during the evening simulation. Hands-on training with typical EMS equipment, including stair chairs, Reeves stretch­ ers, stretcher operations, and the correct use of cervical collars, was part of the instruction. The focus of the session was on safe patient transportation and collaboration between on-site fire and emergency medical staff. The department was joined by members of the Washington Township Ambulance and Rescue Association, with special thanks extended to Lt. Ellershaw and Zack Flannery for assisting with instruction.

As they embark on a new year of leadership and community service, department officers were formally sworn in. The ceremony honored the dedication of the officers who will lead the department in the upcoming year and signaled the beginning of the 2026 term. Members expressed appreciation for the time, dedication, and re­ sponsibility each officer brings to their role. The department also thanked the Mayor and Bor­ ough Council for their continued support of the fire service and the community as a whole.

PUMPER BUILT IN TWU STATES This month we feature apparatus from South River located in Middle­ sex County. South River is a borough o f 2.9-square-miles and a population o f 16,000. The fire department was started in 1907 and is volunteer, oper­ ating three fire companies out o f two stations. Engine Co. 1and the Reliable Fire Company operate out o f one sta­ tion and the Summit Engine Company out o f the other. The pumper built in two states is Engine 2, a 2023 KME Panther 1500/1000 with two portable generators. The cab shell was built at KME and the chassis in Louisiana. It was then returned to KME where Bull­ dog Fire Apparatus (a dealer in Mas­ sachusetts) built the body and mounted it on the chassis. Other appa­ ratus include Engine 3, a 2004 Seagrave pumper from Summit FC, X-Engine 3 a 1999 Pemfab/American Eagle pumper, Engine 4, a 1996 EONE HUSH pumper from the Summit FC and Engine 5 a 1999 KME Excel pumper. LT-1 is a 1996 Spartan Glad­ iator/1986 LTI, quint running out o f the main station. They also have a util­ ity brush truck which appeared in the Little Big Guys feature in this issue.

The last photo is from the River Plaza FC in Middletown Township (Mon­ mouth County) and is a 2024 Spartan ER Metro Star S-180 pumper.

In apparatus news, Mantua Town­ ship in Gloucester County has ordered a pumper/tanker from U. S. Fire Appa­ ratus. It will have a Kenworth T-480 chassis. Other specs include a Pacccar PX-9, 450 hp diesel engine, 1500-gpm pump, 3000-gallon water tank, 50-gallon foam tank and have an aluminum body.

Manitou Park in Berkeley Township (Ocean County) has ordered an EONE Typhoon pumper. It will have a 2000-gpm pump, 750-gallon water tank and 30-gallon foam tank.

Defender Emergency Products re­ ports the following deliveries: two Medix ambulances. One is a Type II on a Ford Transit 250 chassis to the On Time Medical Transport in Roselle (Union County) and the other is an RP90 Type III remount o f a Ford E350 chassis to Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health. Also delivered is a Rosenbauer Panther 4x4 airport truck to the South Jersey Transportation Au­ thority for the Atlantic City Interna­ tional Airport (Atlantic County).

New Jersey Emergency Vehicles has delivered to the West Keansburg FC in Hazlet Township (Monmouth County) a Toyne pumper with Spartan Metro Star chassis.

Fire & Safety Services reports the following Pierce orders: for the Eve­ sham Fire District (Burlington County) an Enforcer pumper; for Mer­ cer County a Frontline Ford Transit Critical Response Unit (CRU) with a Fotokite Tethered Kite, for the Bor­ ough of Sayreville (Middlesex County) a Saber pumper and in Morris County, a Saber pumper for Dover, a Stock Saber pumper for Mount Olive and a Velocity PUC pumper for the Towaco FC (District 2) in Montville.

The contribution will help support the department’s ongoing mission to provide reliable fire protection and emergency services to the Chatham Borough community. Department representatives expressed gratitude for the committee’s continued commitment to local public safety, noting that community partner­ ships and charitable support play a vital role in sustaining volunteer fire operations, equipment needs, and training initiatives. On January 26th, the River Vale Fire Department staged a door prop drill at its North Firehouse, where members of the Montvale Volun­ teer Fire Department performed forceful entry training. Tool profi­ ciency, door control, and forcible entry procedures for one and two people were the main topics of the drill. To increase productivity and coordination during forced entry operations, firefighters used a variety of techniques, including the usage of the Rabbit Tool.

Following the death of former Hampton Fire Company Chief Robert Gibson, popularly known as "Gibby," the Glen Gardner Fire Company No. 1 sent condolences on January 13th. Chief Gibson committed his life to service, serving his country in the US Army during World War II after initially de­ fending his hometown as a member of Hampton Fire Com­ pany Station 13. One of the most significant moments in his military career was arriving on the Normandy beaches on D-Day. Along with Gibson's family and friends, Glen Gard­ ner Fire Company sent their sympathies to Hampton Fire Company, honoring a life marked by dedication, selfless­ ness, and leadership. Chief Gib­ son's remarkable life of service to humanity is remembered with gratitude and respect.

On January 31, 2026 the Toms River Fire Department Technical Rescue Team conducted training at a building slated for demolition.

The training included setting up and operating a Twin Tensioned Rope System using the Arizona Vortex as a high directional to lower and raise team members into and out of an elevator shaft as part of our regular confined space training. Members were able to practice various anchor options including using a Paratech Strut as a Jamb Pole anchor.

Crews Extinguish Fire at Marina Del Ray Apartments FRANK SAIA PLEASANTVILLE, NJ - On January 2nd at approximately 9:16 p.m., the Pleasantville Fire Department was dispatched to the Marina Del Ray Apartments for a reported fire. Crews discov­ ered an ongoing fire inside an apartment building when they arrived. Firefighters entered the building and quickly put out the fire to stop it from spreading. No injuries were reported during the completion of the operations. The Pleasantville Fire Department received additional support throughout the incident from a number of mutual aid organizations. To make sure the fire was completely put out and the situation was se­ cure, units stayed on the scene.

Cherry Hill Firefighters Battle Smoky, Sub Freezing Fatal Dwelling Fire CHERRY HILL, NJ - On Jan­ uary 31, 2026 at approximately 10:14 p.m., the Camden County Fire Alarm transmitted a box for the Cherry Hill Fire Department for the report o f a dwelling fire at 544 Main Street. Initial reports were o f smoke and fire, as well as an adult male who may be trapped.

Companies battled the stub­ born fire for over an hour before placing it under control. Several companies remained on location throughout the night, in icy and freezing conditions, for final extin­ guishment. The fire is under inves­ tigation by the Cherry Hill and Camden County FMO.

H0-H0-KUS VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

Quick Response Contains Smoke Condition in Ho-Ho-Kus HO-HO-KUS, NJ - On January 26th, the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department was called to a home on Ackerman Avenue due to a reported fire at the height of a winter storm. When firefighters arrived, they discovered that combustible goods had been put too close to a fireplace, resulting in a condition of intense smoke. The homeowner received prompt assis­ tance from volunteers on standby at headquarters in extin­ guishing the fire and clearing debris from the fireplace area.

In addition to ventilating the house, workers verified that the fire had not spread beyond than the surrounding vicinity.

There were no reports of structural damage.

F irefighters B attle Fast-M oving 3-Alarm House Fire in R idgefield Park RIDGEFIELD PARK, NJ - A single-family home was heavily damaged in a mid-afternoon blaze at 254 Euclid Ave. on February 12th.

RPFD units were dispatched at 2:30 P.M., and on arrival, a smoke condition was showing from the second floor. A working fire was transmitted. Hack­ ensack, Teaneck, and Bogota assisted in the initial attack.

A second alarm was sounded as flames traveled the walls and broke out on the second floor on the A/B sides. An aggres­ sive interior attack had to be halted as flames continued to spread and conditions deterio­ rated. A third alarm was called for as companies were removed from the structure. Heavy flames and smoke took possession o f the sec­ ond floor and attic.

Outside streams knocked down most o f the visible fire, al­ low ing members to re-enter.

Crews were able to open up from the interior, as well as from Truck 2’ s aerial. The smoke condition slowly lessened and members began overhaul. The fire was placed under control a short time later, with only exterior siding damage to an exposure building.

No serious injuries to firefighters or residents were reported. The cause is under investigation.
