Firefighters arrived at 842 West Main Street just before midnight with fire through the roof of a business on the east end of the strip mall and set up a defensive operation because of the heavy fire conditions.

F ully Involved Van Fire Shuts Down 1-95 North in W est G reenwich

Fast-M oving Brush Fire Contained in W esterly WESTERLY, Rl - The Dunn’s Corners Fire Department was dispatched to Klondike Road on April 12th for a reported brush fire. Crews arrived to find a fast-moving grass fire ex­ tending into nearby brush. Quick action allowed firefighters to contain the fire before fully extinguishing it and thoroughly wetting down the area.

WEST GREENWICH, Rl On May 1st, firefighters from the Lake Mishnock Fire/Rescue re­ sponded to a vehicle fire on 1-95 North near Exit 21, alongside mutual aid partners includ­ ing West Green­ wich Fire District #1, West Green­ wich EMS, West Greenwich Police Department, and the Rhode Island State Police.

First-arriving units encoun­ tered a transit-style van fully en­ gulfed in flames. Crews quickly deployed a handline and initiated an aggressive fire attack, working to bring the intense blaze under control while additional person­ nel supported suppression efforts.

Through coordinated opera­ tions between all responding agencies, the fire was success­ fully extinguished and the vehicle was removed from the roadway.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation assisted with clearing melted debris, helping restore normal traffic flow along the highway.

No injuries were reported.

Overturned Kayak Response Ends Safely at Quonnie Breachway WESTERLY, Rl - The Dunn's Corners Fire Department, along with Charlestown Ambulance Rescue Service and mutual aid companies, responded to the Quonnie Breachway area on April 16th for reports of an overturned kayak. Upon arrival, crews initiated a coordinated search of the water and shore­ line. Eyewitnesses advised that a Good Samaritan had al­ ready assisted the individual out of the water prior to emergency units arriving. Marine operations continued as DCFD Marine 1 conducted a sweep of the area and success­ fully located and recovered the kayak. The incident con­ cluded safely, with crews ensuring no additional hazards remained in the water.

WEST GREENWICH, Rl - A suspected roof fire in the Hianloland neighborhood on April 13th prompted the response of West Greenwich Volunteer Fire Company No. 1. Chiefs 203 and 204, Engine 22, Hianloland Engine 20, and Lake Mishnock Tanker 1 were among the units sent out. When crews arrived, they discovered that leaves on the roof had caught fire due to sparks from a wood-burning stove chimney. Fire­ fighters cleared the burning material and examined the struc­ ture for extension, stopping the fire before it spread further.

Area Fire Departments Team Up fo r Annual Controlled Burn HARRISVILLE, Rl - In April, Harrisville Fire Department per­ sonnel joined members from Pascoag Fire Department and Glocester fire companies to assist the East Burrillville Fire Department with a controlled burn at Addieville East Pheas­ ant Farm. The annual operation supports field maintenance while also serving as a valuable hands-on training exercise.

Crews operated in a controlled environment to strengthen wildland firefighting skills, coordination, and operational readiness for real-world incidents.

Multi-Department Effort Tames Stubborn Brush Fire in Chepachet CHEPACHET, Rl - The Chepachet Fire Department, alongside neighboring departments, responded to assist the Harmony Fire District with a stubborn brush fire in the area of Evan’s Road, April 12th. Upon arrival, crews encountered a persist­ ent fire that required a coordinated and sustained effort to contain. Firefighters worked side by side for several hours, utilizing teamwork and strategic operations to gradually bring the fire under control.

New Jersey: Julius Snyder, 55 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: Feb. 1, 2020 Death Date: Oct. 27, 2025 Fire Department: Camden Fire Department Initial Summary: Firefighter Julius Snyder responded to eight emergency calls while working a 24-hour shift from January 31, 2020, to February 1, 2020. Shortly after his shift ended, Firefighter Snyder suffered a med­ ical emergency. He was taken to a local hospital and subsequently transferred to a regional medical center for emergency surgery. After suffering prolonged complica­ tions from the medical emergency he suffered in 2020, Firefighter Snyder passed away on October 27, 2025.

Department Initial Summary: Firefighter Michael Heithaus re­ sponded to an emergency medical call in the after­ noon o f March 29, 2025. The following morning, Firefighter Heithaus suffered a fatal cardiovascular event.

Ryan, 61 Rank: Firefighter/Fire Commissioner Incident Date: Dec. 13,2025 Death Date: Dec. 13, 2025 Fire Department: Phoenicia Fire District Initial Summary: Firefighter/Fire Commissioner Michael Ryan was part of a crew that responded to a res­ cue call for an injured hiker. As the crew was carrying the hiker out of a wooded area, Firefighter/Fire Commis­ sioner Ryan suffered a cardiovascular event. Fellow first responders provided immediate lifesaving measures and transported Firefighter/Fire Commissioner Ryan to a local hospital where, despite all efforts, he was pro­ nounced deceased. Firefighter/Fire Commissioner Ryan served the Phoenicia Fire District as both a firefighter and the District Fire Commissioner.

Virginia: Linzie "Scott" Collins, 50 Rank: Firefighter-EMT Incident Date: November 15,2025 Death Date: November 16, 2025 Fire Department: Richlands Fire-EMS Initial Summary: On November 15, 2025, FirefighterEMT Linzie Scott Collins was on duty from 10:00 a.m. until 6 p.m. During this shift, Firefighter-EMT Collins responded to two calls. The following day at 1:15 a.m., the wife of Firefighter-EMT Collins found him in dis­ tress. Firefighter-EMT Collins stopped breathing and CPR was performed. Firefighter-EMT Collins was trans­ ported to a local hospital where he was pronounced de­ ceased at 3:24 a.m.

Tiverton FD Extinguishes Fully Involved V ehicle Fire on Route 177

ASHAWAY VOLUNTEER FIRE ASSOCIATION

TIVERTON, RI - On April 27th, firefighters from the Tiver­ ton Fire Department responded to a reported vehicle fire along Route 177 near Quintal Drive, ar­ riving to find the car completely en­ gulfed in flames.

Crews quickly stretched hose lines and worked to bring the intense blaze under control, pre­ venting it from spreading to nearby areas.

Due to the severity of the fire and the need to ensure firefighter safety. Route 177 was temporar­ ily shut down, causing brief traf­ fic disruptions in the area.

The incident also resulted in damage to a nearby utility pole, prompting a response from Rhode Island Energy to assess and ad­ dress any potential hazards.

There were no injuries re­ ported.

Lightning S trike Ignites Garage Fire in Ashaway ASHAWAY, Rl - The Ashaway Volunteer Fire Association, as­ sisted by Hope Valley - Wyoming Fire District Ladder 911, responded to a lightning strike that sparked a fire in an at­ tached garage on Wellstown Road, April 17th. Crews estab­ lished a water supply, advanced handlines, and initiated interior operations while truck crews performed a trench cut to stop extension into the home. The fire was quickly brought under control, with damage largely confined to the garage. Mutual aid companies operated effectively to con­ tain the incident.

Jamestown Crews Contain Barn Fire on North Road JAMESTOWN, RI - At ap­ proximately 10:45 p.m. on April 22nd, the Jamestown Volunteer Fire Department responded to a working fire at Watson Farm on North Road.

When Chief 1 arrived, he discov­ ered a fully involved 60-by-80-foot bam with exposures on both sides. While personnel guarded a nearby occupied house approximately 50-feet away and made sure all res­ idents were evacuated. Engine 2 ex­ tended the original attack lines.

Drafting from a water source around 400-feet away from the lo­ cation was part of the establishment of a rural water delivery operation.

Mutual aid companies from North Kingstown, Newport, Mid­ dletown, and Portsmouth responded to assist. A total of five handlines were placed in service, and the fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes. Crews remained on scene for overhaul and equipment repacking before clearing.

Quick Police Alert Leads to Safe Escape in Two Alarm Bridgewater House Fire BRIDGEWATER, ME - Bridgewater Fire Department officials re­ port that three residents and two cats were safely evacuated from a two-alarm house fire after a passerby reported the inci­ dent, April 10th. A responding police officer quickly alerted the occupants, allowing them to escape before conditions wors­ ened. Fire crews arrived to find an active fire and initiated sup­ pression operations, bringing the incident under control.

Lubec Fire Reviews Close Call During Structure Fire LUBEC, ME - During an in­ ternal fire operation, April 17th, the Lubec Fire Department re­ ported a near-miss occurrence in­ volving a quick fire event on the second story. When conditions abruptly altered, consistent with a potential smoke explosion or backdraft, crews had moved into the second division. In a matter of seconds, the heat and flames grew more intense, and firefighters fled

the scene. There were no reported injuries.

Such incidents show how quickly a fire may spread in areas with inadequate ventilation. To lower danger during interior oper­ ations, fire department training still emphasizes communication.

Challenging Nighttime Rescue Near York’s Folly Pond Successfully Locates and Extracts Injured Hiker YORK, ME - On April 28th, firefighters from the York, Maine Fire Department responded along­ side York Ambulance to assist a lost and injured hiker within the trail system near Folly Pond.

Working in co­ ordination with the York Police Depart­ J ump to f iie # ment, crews were D5D32B151 able to locate the in­ dividual and begin patient care in a re­ mote, wooded area.

Firefighters then carried out a complex extrication, navigating darkness and difficult terrain using rope rescue systems, coordinated manpower, and spe­ cialized equipment including UTVs andATVs. The extended operation re­ quired significant resources and careful coordination, ultimately re­ sulting in the safe removal of the patient from the trail system.

Additional support was pro­ vided by Kittery Fire Department, which covered stations during the incident.

GORHAM, ME - On April 12th, Gorham Fire Department re­ sponded to multiple calls for serv­ ice, including a significant outside fire that extended to two structures after a controlled bum escaped con­ tainment.

Crews arrived to find a rapidly spreading grass and brush fire threatening buildings on the prop­ erty. Firefighters quickly initiated

suppression efforts, limiting the fire’s spread to an area of approxi­ mately 200-by-200-feet. One struc­ ture sustained minor damage, while a second experienced moderate ex­ terior damage.

The fire was brought under

control in under 10 minutes, with crews remaining on scene to com­ plete overhaul operations. Mutual aid assistance and station coverage were provided by departments from Buxton, Standish, Windham, Hol­ lis, and Westbrook. The incident re­ mains under investigation by the Maine Forest Service.

ROCKWOOD, ME — April 16th — Since joining last year, Dani Carter has completed a number of important certifications, accord­ ing to Rockwood Fire & Rescue. Carter has completed both Fire­ fighter I and II training, as well as ice water rescue and, most recently, swift water rescue. Because of the region's rivers, lakes, and shifting seasonal circumstances, agencies in Maine continue to prioritize water rescue training.

Jackman - Moose River Fire & Rescue Handles Serious MVC on Route 201 JACKMAN, ME - A rollover collision on Route 201 at the Moose River bridge on April 3rd prompted the Jackman-Moose River Fire & Rescue Department to respond. On arrival, crews found a southbound pickup that collided with a guardrail, overturned, and landed on its side in the northbound lane. The motorist was gravely hurt when crews arrived. Firefighters helped EMS with access and patient removal, stabilized the vehicle, and managed hazards. An ambu­ lance took the driver to a neighboring hospital.

TOPSHAM, ME — April 23rd — Topsham Fire & Rescue took part in a community outreach event where firefighters interacted with local families and displayed fire apparatus. While responding to inquiries regarding emergency response procedures and fire safety, crews provided people with a close-up look at fire engines and equipment. Throughout the event, department mascot Kenny G. participated in activities and greeted kids.

Rapid Response Contains Spreading Field Fire in North Yarmouth

NORTH YARMOUTH, ME - Firefighters quickly brought a field fire under control on Memorial Highway after multiple passersby reported the incident on April 27th. Arriving crews found an active fire covering an area of roughly 150-by-150-feet. Using a coordinated attack with a forestry line and several hundred gallons of water, firefighters were able to stop the spread and fully extinguish the blaze. The fire was later determined to be accidental, with Maine Forest Rangers notified. No injuries or additional damage were reported.

LEWISTON, ME — On April 9th, firefighters responded to a reported structure fire on the 80 block of College Street, where smoke was visible from several blocks away.

Upon arrival, crews encountered a two-story resi­ dence with a wellestablished fire on the first floor. Fire­ fighters quickly de­ ployed hose lines and launched an aggressive inte­ rior attack, bringing the bulk of the fire under control in under 10 minutes.

Crews remained on scene for

an extended period, conducting overhaul operations and extin­ guishing hidden pockets of fire within wall voids to prevent rekin­ dle.

One individual was evaluated at the scene by EMS and later re­

leased. Five residents were dis­ placed as a result of the incident.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the fire prevention team.

Vertical training in rope operations and multi-level response pro­ cedures was conducted by the Sipayik Fire Department in April.

The 17th anniversary of Deputy Fire Chief Brian Beeler's death following a fight with leukemia was commemorated by the Berwick Fire Department in April. Beeler held important leader­ ship positions, including as Deputy Chief, during his lengthy tenure. During training and events, he was renowned for his great operational expertise and consistent command presence. In order to create a trustworthy team within the department, he also served as a mentor to younger colleagues. His emphasis on accounta­ bility and safety was consistent with the fire service in Maine. His contributions to department operations and emergency response are still acknowledged by members. His efforts and example are still a part of the department's foundation seventeen years later.

S huttle Operations and W ater Supply Challenges Overcome a t M utual Aid S tructure Fire in Brunswick LISBON, ME - On April 29th, Lisbon Fire Department re­ sponded on mutual aid to a re­ ported structure fire with injuries on River Road in Brunswick, operat­ ing in an area out­ side the municipal hydrant district.

Tender 2 and Car 501 were dis­ patched, with crews assisting in fire sup­ pression while es­ tablishing a reliable water supply. Tender 2 set up a dump tank and delivered approx­ imately 1,800-gallons of water, while Engine 1 was assigned to secure a supply from a nearby dry hydrant.

After encountering issues with the dry hydrant, crews adapted by deploying a floating strainer with hard suction, suc­ cessfully maintaining a continu­ ous water flow and supporting multiple tanker operations throughout the incident.

The coordinated effort en­ sured effective fireground opera­ tions despite initial challenges, demonstrating strong adaptability and teamwork in a rural water supply environment.

Crews Contain Heavy House Fire on Bridge Street in Farmington FARMINGTON, ME - Firefighters quickly contained a heavy fire in a two-story home on Bridge Street, preventing extension to a nearby building on April 23rd. Crews arrived to find significant fire conditions with exposure to an adjacent structure. An aggressive attack kept the blaze con­ fined to the main building, with only minor heat damage reported next door. All occupants es­ caped without injury and were being assisted by the Red Cross. Multiple mutual aid departments supported the response alongside police and EMS. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Manchester Fire Assists Dorset FD w ith Propane Tank Emergency MANCHESTER, VT - The Manchester Fire Department re­ sponded to a mutual aid request from the Dorset Fire Depart­ ment on April 5th for a leaking underground propane tank on Dorset Hollow Road. Crews were unable to shut off or plug the tank, so the remaining product was safely flared off to eliminate the hazard. Manchester’s Pumper Tanker 9 assisted on scene, working alongside Dorset firefighters to ensure a safe and controlled operation. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Fast-Moving Brush Fire Threatens Structure in Newport City NEWPORT CITY, VT - On April 22nd, the City of Newport Fire Department responded to a brush fire on Spencer Hill in Coventry, where flames were spreading into wooded terrain and posing a threat to a nearby structure. Fire crews deployed multiple apparatus, including Fire 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Rescue 5, and Brush 23 with a UTV, to contain the advancing fire. Through a coor­ dinated effort, firefighters were able to bring the situation under control and protect the threat­ ened building before clearing the scene.

In order to col­ lect money for Justice for Dogs and the Benjamin Clapp Athletic Scholarship Fund, the event brought together law enforcement, fire, and EMS. Strong participation from community members and responders was acknowledged by officials, underscoring the event's teamwork. Jason Tallman donated a portion of the rev­ enues to Justice for Dogs. Organizers said the tournament helped strengthen partnerships among agencies while supporting causes that benefit the local community.

WEATHERSFIELD, VT West Weathersfield Fire Depart­ ment responded to a tree and brush fire along Route 106 after a lightning strike sparked a vegeta­ tion fire during overnight storm ac­ tivity, April 17th.

BARNET, VT - Mutual aid partners were commended by Barnet Fire and Rescue for their response to a fire in a restricted location on April 10th. Workers were exposed to conditions that could result in a large-scale incident, such as the possibility of a swiftly spread­ ing wildland fire. Firefighters were able to confine the fire before it could spread further and save an adjacent residential building through synchronized efforts.

DUMMERSTON, VT - The town now has a 4,000-gallon water supply capacity thanks to the Dummerston Fire Department's installation of a new 2,000-gallon tanker. The feature facilitates operations in hydrant-free locations, where tanker shuttle systems are frequently needed. It is anticipated that the new equipment will increase the effectiveness of water distribution and expand its capacity to control fires during work-related incidents.

Brush Fire Threatens Weathersfield Home, Crews Act Quickly to Contain WEATHERSFIELD, VT - West Weathersfield Fire Department responded to a working brush fire on Plains Road with expo­ sure to a nearby home, April 12th. Engines 1 and 7, along with Tanker 1, responded with 10 members and quickly went to work protecting the structure. Firefighters focused on con­ taining the advancing fire and preventing extension to the residence, utilizing coordinated suppression and water sup­ ply operations. Their rapid response and teamwork helped bring the situation under control and protect the property.

NEWFANE, VT - Firefighters responded to a brush fire on Timson Efill Road after a tree fell onto power lines, igniting surrounding vegeta­ tion and creating hazardous condi­ tions, May 5th.

Crews were ini­ tially unable to en­ gage the fire until power was secured, delaying suppres­ sion efforts as utility hazards remained active.

Once conditions were deemed safe, firefighters moved in to knock down the fire and began working through remaining hot spots.

The incident prompted addi­ tional mutual aid from East Dover and Dummerston, as Newbrook personnel were also committed to another emergency involving a medical helicopter landing at Onyon Field.

M other and Toddler Escape Submerged V ehicle in Ottauquechee River Incident HARTFORD, VT - A 26year-old woman and her 2-yearold son narrowly escaped a dangerous situation after their ve­ hicle became sub­ merged in the Ottauquechee River on Monday after­ J ump to file# noon, April 6th.

Upon arrival at 12:49 PM, Ambulance #2 from Quechee Station 2 found both the mother and child safely on the riverbank.

According to responders, the child had been secured in a car seat in the back of the vehicle.

The mother managed to free him, cut through the deployed driverside airbag, and exit through a window before the vehicle drifted downstream. Both were able to swim to safety.

First responders assisted the pair into an ambulance and trans­ ported them to Dartmouth Hitch­ cock Medical Center for evaluation. No serious injuries were reported.

Vehicle Fire on 1-91 in W eathersfield Contained Following Crash Response WEATHERSFIELD, VT - On April 13th, West Weathersfield Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident with fire on Interstate 91 in Windsor, with Engine 4 and a crew of six arriving on scene to find a vehicle involved with fire. Crews worked quickly to suppress the flames and secure the scene, preventing further hazards to motorists and surrounding areas. After completing fire suppression and overhaul oper­ ations, units cleared the scene and returned to service.

1 arrived shortly after, at 12:55 PM. Rescue swimmers entered the water to ensure no other occupants remained in the vehicle and con­ firmed it was empty.

Quechee Main Street was tem­ porarily closed during the emer­ gency response but has since reopened. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Hartford Police Department.

The vehicle was later removed from the river by Sabil and Sons Inc., with fire personnel assisting at the scene. Although Lebanon and Hanover Fire Departments were initially dispatched, their as­ sistance was ultimately not re­ quired.

CAMPTON, NH - On April 29th, Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue responded to a burning dump truck on 1-93 northbound near Exit 27, with smoke visible from miles away. Upon arrival, crews found a fully involved vehicle and a fast-spreading brush fire in the median. Engine 3 attacked the vehicle fire while additional crews, including Plymouth Fire-Rescue and mutual aid depart­ ments, worked to contain the brush fire, which quickly grew to about a quarter-acre due to dry, windy conditions. Heavy smoke forced a temporary shutdown of both sides of the highway for safety. Firefighters brought the incident under control and remained on scene for mop-up as lanes gradually reopened.

Head-On Collision Sends Two to Hospital Near Great Bay Mobil NEWFIELDS, NH - In re­ sponse to a head-on collision in­ volving injuries on Route 108 close to Great Bay Mobil on April 23rd, Newmarket Fire & Rescue re­ sponded with Newfields Police and Fire, as well as New­ market Police. After witnessing the colli­ sion, a Newmarket ambulance called dispatch and started tending to the in­ jured. According to preliminary investi­ gations, a south­ bound Lexus IS collided with a northbound Toyota Tundra after crossing the centerline.

Both cars were severely dam­ aged. The drivers, a 68-year-old male and a 19-year-old male, were taken to Portsmouth Regional Hos­ pital with non-life-threatening in­ juries. Crews oversaw traffic, hazard control, and patient care.

The incident is under investigation.

ations. One dog was rescued and re­ ceived treatment, while other ani­ mals unfortunately did not survive the fire. One firefighter was evalu­ ated and cleared on scene. Crews remained for overhaul and investi­ gation. The cause is under investi­ gation and not considered suspicious.

Crews Tackle Challenging Dumpster Fire a t L ittle to n Transfer S tation LITTLETON, NH - Littleton Fire Rescue responded to a re­ ported smoke condition in the area of Mount Eustis Road and the Industrial Park on April 25th, quickly locating the source as a burning demolition dumpster at the Littleton Transfer Station. Command was established, and a general alarm was requested as crews stretched a handline and began fire attack through the compactor fire port. Additional personnel, including off-duty and call members, responded to assist. With help from transfer station staff using a loader to remove the dumpster, firefighters gained better access and worked through the labor-intensive process of pulling apart and extinguishing burning debris.

L ittle to n Fire Rescue Assists at Building Fire in St. Johnsbury LITTLETON, NH - On April 21st, Littleton Fire Rescue re­ sponded on a mutual aid assignment to assist the St. Johns­ bury Fire Department at a reported building fire on Portland Street. With one ambulance already tied up on a separate med­ ical call, remaining on-duty personnel, along with off-duty and call firefighters, staffed and responded with available appara­ tus. Upon arrival, crews encountered a two-story garage with multiple access points at different grade levels. Firefighters from St. Johnsbury had already made significant progress, bringing the fire under control quickly and preventing further extension. No injuries were reported. Littleton units assisted as needed before clearing the scene and returning to service.

At the New Hampshire Fire & Emergency Medical Services Committee of Merit ceremony, FF/EMT Haley Vincent was given the Lawrence A. Volz EMS Heroism Award, according to Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue. In June 2024, while off duty, Vincent was involved in a motorbike accident on Interstate 93 in Campton and received recognition for her actions. She is the department's first recipient of this honor. Kurt Warnick, a call member who works full-time for Plymouth Fire-Rescue, was also honored for his actions during a medical emergency in Ashland last summer.

Crews Battle M ultiple Brush Fires in Harts Location TWIN MOUNTAIN, NH - Twin Mountain Fire Rescue responded on a mutual aid request for a brush fire in Harts Location along Arethusa Falls Road near the railroad tracks on April 25th. Upon arrival, crews discovered three separate fires, forcing resources to be divided across multiple areas. Fire­ fighters from several regional departments worked in ex­ tremely difficult and hazardous terrain to bring the fires under control. After an extended operation, crews were gradually released once containment was achieved.

CANTERBURY, NH - A build­ ing fire in the town was re­ ported to Canterbury NH Fire & Rescue on April 8th.

Before starting the fire at­ tack and principal search ac­ tivities, crews arrived, established command, and finished a size-up. The fire was quickly contained and no injuries were reported.

Members of the Bedford Fire Department conducted a low-angle rescue scenario as part of a final evaluation for Engine 4 opera­ tions. Engine 4 serves as a multi-purpose unit, regularly respond­ ing to technical rescues, motor vehicle collisions, and hazardous materials incidents, requiring its crew to maintain a high level of versatility and readiness. The evaluation challenged a firefighter to demonstrate proficiency in rope operations, scene manage­ ment, and patient care in a realistic training environment, ensuring the ability to operate independently on the apparatus.

Driver Escapes Injury After Rollover Crash in New London NEW LONDON, NH - On May 1st, New London Fire Depart­ ment crews responded to a vehicle rollover on Seamans Road, directly in front of the New London Police De­ partment, where they found a passen­ ger vehicle over­ J ump to file# D5DB2B1D1 turned on its roof.

Initial reports » i> | indicated the vehicle struck the rear of a parked pickup truck, causing it to flip.

The driver was protected by airbag deployment and was able to selfextricate from the vehicle prior to crews’ arrival.

Emergency responders secured the scene, assessed hazards, and ensured the safety of all involved.

As a precaution. Seamans Road was temporarily closed between Main Street and Gould Road to allow for safe operations and scene management.

The incident concluded with­ out serious injuries, highlighting the effectiveness of vehicle safety systems and the importance of prompt emergency response.

NORTH WALPOLE, NH North Walpole Fire & Rescue De­ partment was initially dispatched to provide station coverage for Rockingham Station 1 on May 11th, when operations quickly escalated due to a reported structure fire.

Shortly after the initial assignment, a second alarm was transmitted for heavy fire showing at the Rodeway Inn on Route 5.

Engine 1 was immediately redirected to the scene with a crew of four to assist with active fireground operations.

Crews transitioned from cov­ erage duties to an active incident response, supporting ongoing ef­ forts to bring the rapidly develop­ ing fire under control through coordinated mutual aid operations..

HAMPSTEAD, NH - April 18th - Walter Chip Hastings, a retired fire chief, passed away, according to Hampstead, New Hampshire Fire-Rescue & Emergency Management. Along with his spouse, Susan, Hastings joined the department in 1967 and worked there for over 42 years. He oversaw operations, staff development, and training while serving as the department's chief for 30 years. He promoted the department's expansion in the community and served as a mentor to generations of firemen during his tenure. His leadership in the fire department and long-standing dedication to public safety are reflected in his service.

JEFFERSON, NH - On May 3rd, Jefferson Fire Department crews responded to a reported chimney fire on Panorama Drive, dispatching multiple units including Util­ ity 1, Engine 1, En­ gine 2, and Rescue 1.

Upon arrival, firefighters encoun­ tered heavy smoke conditions with a significant volume of fire contained within the chimney. Crews quickly initiated ladder operations to access the roof and began coor­ dinated suppression efforts.

Firefighters successfully extin­ guished the fire while removing a substantial buildup of debris that had heavily obstmcted the chimney, a contributing factor to the intensity of the incident.

The operation required careful coordination to ensure the fire was fully contained and did not extend into the structure.

Through effective teamwork and efficient operations, crews brought the situation under control and cleared the scene after complet­ ing overhaul and safety checks.

The incident was resolved with­ out reported injuries, and the resi­ dence was successfully protected.

Hanover Crews Quickly Contain Kitchen Fire HANOVER, NH — Hanover Fire Department units responded to a fire alarm activation on April 20th and arrived to find a kitchen fire with smoke conditions throughout the building.

Recognizing the conditions, crews upgraded the response to a first alarm and stretched a hose line for an interior attack.

Firefighters quickly located the seat of the fire and brought it under control, preventing further extension beyond the kitchen area. Damage was kept to a minimum as crews com­ pleted overhaul and ventilation, ensuring the building was safe before clearing the scene.

Three-Car Accident in Franklin Results in Door Pop FRANKLIN, CT - At 2:32 pm on Tuesday, 5/5/26 the Franklin Fire Department with an American Ambulance was dispatched to 210 Route 32 for a three-car accident.

Quinebaug Valley Dispatchers ob­ tained additional in­ formation that a person was trapped in one of the cars, so Bozrah was added at 2:36 pm.

Engine 126 and Medic 25 arrived at 2:46 pm and began patient care and sta­ bilization. Engine 126 popped the front passenger’s door to gain access to one of the patients, while Rescue 125 evalu­ ated the driver of the truck.

Ambulance 526, Medic 25, Lebanon Ambulance 606 and Baltic Ambulance 524 all trans­ ported patients to Backus Hospital.

Service 226 assisted the Connecti­ cut State Police with traffic control.

Car 25 had command and Route 32 was shut down for a short time.

Bethel Firefighters Stop Apartment Fire from Spreading Beyond Room of Origin BETHEL, CT - On April 16th, Bethel Fire & EMS responded to a reported structure fire on Rector Street, where the chief arrived within moments and confirmed a working fire in a mixed-use building with flames showing from a first-floor apartment.

A second alarm was struck due to the building size and visible fire condi­ tions.

Engine 6 and Truck 1 made an aggressive inte­ rior attack, quickly knocking down the fire while mutual aid crews, in­ cluding Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Company, assisted with searches and checked for extension. All oc­ cupants had safely evacuated prior to arrival, and no injuries were re­ ported.

The fire was contained to the room of origin thanks to the rapid response and coordinated efforts.

Bethel EMS provided firefighter rehab, while the Red Cross is as­ sisting displaced residents. The cause remains under investigation..

Firelighters arrived at 842 West Main Street just before midnight with lire through the roof of a busi­ ness on the east end of the strip mall and set up a defensive opera­ tion because of the heavy lire con­ ditions. The lire was mostly held to

During the week of April 27, the Training Officer for the Torrington Fire Department, Assistant Chief Jay Dixon presented a vehicle extrication/rescue scenario to the four platoons. Chief Dixon set up two vehicles in a concrete drainage structure behind Fire Head­ quarters on Water Street. With one vehicle on top of a second ve­ hicle, the situation presented interesting challenges to the various crews who had to overcome limited work space, below grade res­ cue, and potentially unstable vehicles. Each platoon had to pack­ age and remove a simulated victim with in the wreckage. Crews operated with the Holmatro Rescue Tools, as well as various struts to stablize the vehicles. Mayor Molly Spino and Fire Chief David Tripp Jr stopped by to observe the training.

Gardner Lake Fire Company C elebrates 70 years COLCHESTER, CT - At 7:00 pm on Friday, 4/17/26 the Gardner Lake Fire Company celebrated their 70th anniversary at the Polish Club in Colchester. Chiefs from around the area celebrated with members from the department. Following a delicious meal, awards were given out for years of service. The Gardner Lake Fire Company is one of two stations located in Salem, Connecticut.

Station 27 helps protect 4,200 people over 29-square-miles with an engine, tanker, rescue, forestry, ambulance, service truck, UTV and a fire boat.

Vehicle Crashes Into Ellington Apartment ELLINGTON, CT - On April 15th, the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department responded to Deer Valley Town Homes for a motor vehicle accident involving a car that struck and en­ tered a building, with the driver still inside. Firefighters quickly assessed the situation and determined the operator could be safely removed without heavy extrication, leading to the cancellation of additional mutual aid resources. The driver was transported to a local hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries, while apartment occupants were un­ harmed. Crews remained on scene to assist with the safe removal of the vehicle and to secure the structure.

Taftville Duplex Heavily Damaged in Second-Alarm Fire TAFTVILLE, CT - At 8:35 pm on Thursday, 4/23/26 the Taftville Fire Department with Norwich’s Engine 2, Squad A, Truck 1, Bat­ talion 1, East Great Plain Rescue 5 and the Mohegan Tribal FAST were dis­ < # patched to 24 North J ump to file# 3rd Avenue for a 042 52612 2 house fire. Car 2 ar­ rived with fire show­ ing from the first floor extending all the way up the rear of a 2.5 story wood frame duplex.

Engine 21 stretched a 1.75” hose line to the rear and knocked a lot of fire. Engine 2 laid a supply line from a hydrant on the corner of North 3rd and North B Street which fed Engine 21. Truck 25 set up on the “Alpha/Bravo” comer and flew the aerial. Engine 2 stretched a second line from En­ gine 21 through the front door of the fire apartment. Truck 1 per­ formed the primary search while Squad A checked the upper floors for extension. Engine 3 threw lad­ ders and then took a line to the basement. Following that, mem­ bers took a line to the attic.

Occum Engine 42, Laurel Hill Engine 62 and Lisbon ET 154 as­ sisted with overhaul. Car 2 had command while the Battalion had operations. American Ambulance evaluated multiple firefighters for exertion. The Norwich Fire Mar­ shal’s Office is investigating. Nor­ wich Police, Norwich Public Utilities and the building official all assisted on scene.

I have gone to resiliency train­ ing, and they talk about having grat­ itude, but why do we need a program to learn how to appreciate things. I have heard that gratitude is basically appreciating the life that you have.

I know people who have gone through major events in life and then they learned to appreciate things. Why do some people need a major event? After I had my major event, I have learned to appreciate each morning and look at things a lot differently than when I did be­ fore.

Do you know how many times the Bible discusses that we need to be thankful? It's over one hundred fifty times. Psalm 107:21 states "Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind."

Have you noticed deer or other animals watching you as you are in the traffic?

Some of us need to be reminded that even our now is not promised and if we wake up tomorrow, it is definitely a gift from God. We may make plans for our life, but every­ thing can change in less than a heartbeat.

Have you even taken the time to

smell the head of a baby or really lis­ tened to children as they laughed or really listened to children as they laughed or really sat down and lis­ tened to the stories of someone else, especially those with much life expe­ rience or going through challenges.

There are many people that can appreciate having food and shelter.

James 1:17 states "Every good and perfect gift is from above, com­ ing down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows."

Many times, I think about sitting on a porch reading a good book and just enjoying a nice cup of tea and just watching the day unfold.

The story got to me of a woman who face flooding of a hurricane. In the shelter, she was surrounded by her family, and she had all that she needed in life.

There are people that I know that love foul weather. To them, they enjoy the smell and the sound of the rain falling and thunder and watching the lightning.

Is there something that you carry that is a reminder to appreciate things. Do you carry a picture of o loved one?

We may need reminders at times of how lucky we really are. We may not appreciate a situation as we are going through it but may look back later and say how that may have re­ ally changed our lives.

Horse Rescued from Stream in Bloomfield BLOOMFIELD, CT - The Bloomfield Center Fire Depart­ ment handled a dual incident re­ sponse after being dispatched alongside the Blue Hills Fire Depart­ ment for a shed fire threatening a nearby residence on Eliza­ beth Avenue, May 2nd.

While units were en route, an ad­ ditional call diverted resources to Gale Road for an animal rescue involv­ ing a horse trapped in a stream be­ hind a property. Crews quickly shifted operations and deployed a variety of equipment from multiple apparatus to stabilize and free the animal.

Assistance was provided by Suffield CT Fire Department, while the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department - CT covered head­ quarters during the incident. The Durham Animal Response Team was also requested but was can­ celed prior to arrival.

A nearby resident contributed a mini excavator, which proved in­ strumental in the successful extri­ cation. After a coordinated effort

lasting just over an hour, the horse was safely freed and is expected to recover.

Bloomfield crews operated with Squad 3, Rescue 6, Brush 1, Utility 1, Utility 6, and Car 3, with 10 vol­

unteers responding. All units cleared the scene and returned to service following the incident.

Two Transported A fte r Route 205 C ollision WAUREGAN, CT - On April 10th, Atwood Hose Fire Company, American Legion Ambulance, and the Plainfield Police Department arrived at the scene of a car accident near the intersection of North Chestnut Street and Wauregan Road (Route 205). When units arrived at 10:07 a.m., they discovered a collision between a four-door automobile and a Connecticut DOT dump truck.

Crews helped EMS with patient care and secured the area. Due to their minor injuries, both op­ erators were taken to the hospital. Fire personnel remained on scene for hazard control and cleanup while the vehicles were removed. Wauregan Road was reopened at approximately 10:50 a.m. Plainfield Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Gales Ferry A ssists a t V e h icle Fire w ith Brush Extension GALES FERRY, CT - Just after 6:00 p.m. on April 12th, the Gales Ferry Volunteer Fire Company helped the Ledyard Fire Company with a mutual aid response for a car fire off Michael Lane that extended into the adjacent brush. As personnel at­ tempted to control the fire, Engine 21 responded and assisted with suppression operations. Brush 22 and Service 26 were among the other units that responded to a different smoke report in the vicinity of Whalehead Road shortly after they ar­ rived. Windy and dry conditions raised the likelihood that the fire would spread over the region. The Connecticut DEEP fire weather classification was rated as "High," according to of­ ficials, which emphasizes the need for caution when dealing with any outside igniting sources.

Car Crashes Into Norwalk Apartment Building, Four Residents Displaced NORWALK, CT - The Norwalk Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a passenger car and an occupied multi-residential building at 2 North Taylor Avenue just after 3:00 p.m. on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 6, 2026. A total of 16 firefighters responded to the incident with an engine, ladder, rescue, and command staff. Upon arrival, firefighters found that the vehicle had left the roadway, trav­ eled over a stone wall, and struck the building. A teenage oc­ cupant was in the impacted bedroom and narrowly escaped injury. The driver was treated and transported to Norwalk Hospital with a minor injury. One apartment was posted unfit for occupancy by the Building Department, displacing four residents who were assisted by the American Red Cross.

Kitchen Fire at Old Saybrook Restaurant Quickly Contained OLD SAYBROOK, CT - On April 14th, the Old Saybrook Fire Department responded to a reported fire at Saigon City Restaurant, with assistance from Old Saybrook Police as well as the Fire Marshal, Building, and Health Departments. Firefighters located a kitchen fire that caused minor damage, with some extension into the second floor. Crews acted promptly to contain the fire and prevent further spread within the structure. W aterford Responders Recognized W ith Life Saving C ita tio n WATERFORD, CT - At 3:30 pm on Friday, April 24th, the Town of Waterford held a life saving award ceremony at town hall for members of the Emergency Com­ munications Center, Police Depart­ ment, Fire Department and Ambulance Service.

On Monday, 3/16/26 units from the Waterford Fire Depart­ ment, Ambulance Service and Po­ lice Department were dispatched to Salem Stone Design, 18A Indus­ trial Drive for an industrial acci­ dent with entrapment.

Rescue Company 57, under the direction of Senior Firefighter Peter Ewing, arrived on scene to find a male patient suffering from crush injuries, inside a tractor trailer, pinned by 10 large granite slabs.

The crew of Rescue 57 imme­ diately initiated scene stabilization and deployed Edraulic spreaders.

exceptional precision; freeing the victim in under three minutes. The victim was moved to the parking lot where resuscitative efforts were started immediately. Through these rapid and coordinated efforts, res­ piratory function was restored and the patient was transferred for emergency medical transport with fire department personnel and a F&M Paramedic on board. These immediate actions ultimately con­ tributed to the victim’s full recov­ ery.

For the display of extraordi­ nary composure and the provision of lifesaving service while operat­ ing under extreme duress in a highly challenging scenario and environment, this Unit Citation is hereby awarded.

On April 17th at around 11:35 a.m., the West Stafford FD was called to an automobile accident on Old Springfield Road. Car 44 was the first to arrive and reported that a car had veered off the road, down an embankment, and into a tree. The 75-year-old male operator was experiencing what appeared to be a heart emergency but was not stuck. Squad 144 helped with extrication and stabilized the car.

The patient was flown to a Level 1 trauma center after Lifestar was called to Johnson Memorial Hospital on a modified landing zone.

Canterbury Crews Handle Brush Fire and Schnnl Incident CANTERBURY, CT - Canterbury Volunteer Fire Company, with mutual aid from Central Village, Scotland, and Chaplin, quickly contained a brush fire on Graff Road involving grass and several large trees, taking care to avoid nearby power lines. Crews were then dispatched with Lisbon and Central Village units to Dr. Helen Baldwin Middle School for a fire alarm, where a broken sprinkler head was found in a locker room. The scene was secured, and activities in the building continued without disruption.

When Engine 6 and Car 25 arrived, they verified that a car with a confined person was on its side. Before begin­ ning extrication, crews used Paratech struts to support the car and guarantee a safe work environment. After removing the occupant, firefighters turned over patient care to on-site EMS. ELLINGTON, CT — April 20th — Robert Sandberg, a longstanding member of the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department who served the town and department for more than 65 years, passed away. Sand­ berg served in a variety of capacities for many years as an active member, including captain, driver, firefighter, and EMT. Addition­ ally, he previously presided over the Ellington Volunteer Ambu­ lance Corps. His many years of service demonstrate his enduring dedication to Ellington's emergency services.

LEBANON, CT - At 11:39 a.m. on Thursday, 4/23/26 the Lebanon Fire Department with Bozrah Engine 126, Franklin Rescue 125, the CT State Police and a Windham Hospital Paramedic were dispatched to Scott’s, 20 Industrial Road Field 5, for a tractor trailer rollover with entrapment.

Car 306 arrived at 11:46 a.m. with a tractor trailer who was dumping a load and tipped onto its driver’s side, with the operator still in the cab. Ambulance 606 and Engine 206 removed the windshield to get the man out. Ambulance 606 transported BLS to Backus Hospital.

Ashland Crews Respond to Fully Involved House Fire ASHLAND, MA - On April 26th at around 10:28 p.m., the Ash­ land Fire Department responded to a house fire on Blue Jay Lane. When personnel arrived, they saw that the structure was completely engulfed and sent out a second alarm to call in more help. No injuries were recorded, and the occupant had left the house before they arrived. With assistance from mutual aid, firefighters worked to contain the fire. The State Fire Marshal's Office is still investigating the incident.

Early-M orning 2nd Alarm Fire Displaces 8 Residents and Sends 3 to Hospital in W altham WALTHAM, MA - The Waltham Fire Department re­ sponded to a report of a fire alarm sounding at 2:46 a.m. on Sunday, April 26th at 247 Bacon Street that was quickly updated to report of a building fire. First arriving compa­ nies at 2:49 a.m. found residents still inside on the second floor.

Waltham Fire and Police crews as­ sisted the residents getting out. The first alarm brought Engine 2, Tower 1, Rescue 1, Engine 4, Car 2 and Engine 1 as the Rapid Intervention Team (R.I.T.). The fire was coming out a 3rd floor window in the rear of the wood-frame two-family home and began coming out the eaves.

*4 3P Deputy Paul Quaranto requested a second Ladder (Waltham Ladder 2) to the scene and then ordered a 2nd Alarm. This brought Squad 5, En­ gine 3 and Engine 8 to the fire.

Other command staff responded as well, including Car 1, Car 3, Car 4 as the Safety Officer and H-l.

Crews performed primary and sec­ ondary searches. In all, 8 residents were evacuated from the building and displaced by the fire. Arm­ strong Ambulance units transported 3 residents from the scene.

During operations, crews had to cut numerous large branches so

Ladder Tower 1 could access to the fire building. Crews used transi­ tional attack of exterior lines to knock down heavy fire and then in­ terior hose lines to battle the fire.

Crews were pulled out of the build­ ing as the structure weakened and part of the roof on the third floor collapsed. The building sustained heavy fire, water and smoke dam­ age through all 3 levels.

The State Fire Marshal's Office responded to assist Waltham Fire and Waltham Police with the cause and origin investigation. The cause of the fire remains under investiga­ tion.

Brush Fire Extends to Cabin in Groton GROTON, MA - Groton Firefighters were handling multiple calls at the same time on April 14th, when a brush fire came in for the area of Lowell Road at Old Dunstable Road. Mu­ tual aid was started and enroute it was determined to be a brush fire that had extended to a cabin in the woods. A 2nd alarm was transmitted bringing in mutual aid to the scene and to cover. Companies remained on scene for several hours overhauling.

Wind Takes Embers from Prescribed Burn; Ignites Fire in Neighboring Town LUDLOW, MA - A planned pre­ scribed bum at a military installation resulted in an unplanned fire that ex­ tended to a cache of large PVC drainage pipes in the neighboring town and a subsequent third alarm response on the dry, breezy afternoon of Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

The Major Gen­ eral Oscar Westover Air Reserve Base in Hie City of Chicopee is Hie largest US Mil­ itary installation in Western Massachu­ setts and home to the venerable 439th Air Lift Wing of the US Air Force. As such, it employs several thousand uniformed and civilian per­ sonnel who are protected by a capa­ ble and dedicated Department of Defense Crash-Fire-Rescue Depart­ ment.

Each year, the firefighters of Westover FD are required to conduct a series of controlled bums around Hie base at prescribed times to keep invasive vegetation down to a mini­ mum and to ward off wild life that may pose a threat of bird strikes to inbound and outbound aircraft. On Hie afternoon of April 14th, one such bum was underway.

This evolution had been con­ ducted countless times before, error free. Unfortunately, the wind decided that that "winning streak" should come to an end. While Westover crews were wrapping up operations for the day, embers from the fire were taken by a gust of wind and blown over the perimeter fence line into Hie neighboring town of Ludlow and landed in the outside storage yard of a company that manufactures large PVC drainage pipes, a stock­ pile of which was the unlucky recip­ ient of the aforementioned embers.

Predictably, the highly flamma­ ble PVC pipes became engulfed in flames in a matter of minutes. Lud­ low FD firefighters were called while Westover crews had to make their way to a gate to circumnavigate the perimeter fence. Responding LFD firefighters, seeing an ominous col­ umn of black smoke in the sky, struck a third alarm believing that more manpower would be needed to suppress the fire bringing mutual aid from Wilbraham, Three Rivers, Palmer and Chicopee FDs to the scene.

The fire, while still putting up an impressive column of smoke from the burning petrochemical based pipes that was visible from miles away, was quickly knocked down however, and mutual aid companies were released in a relatively short pe­ riod of time. Westover and Ludlow firefighters remained on scene for two hours wetting down the area for­ merly occupied by ready for instal­ lation drainage pipes and now occupied by a hot, molten mass of plastic sludge.

Firefighters Rescue Dog from 2 Alarm Fire in Waltham WALTHAM, MA - The Waltham Fire Department responded to reports of a building fire at 38 Autumn Lane at 7:57 a.m. on Wednesday morning, April 29,2026. Engine 7, Engine 8, Tower 1, Rescue 1, Engine 2 and Car 2 along with Armstrong Medic 4 responded on the first alarm. Crews reported heavy smoke showing from Central Station. Crews were also informed of possible propane tanks in the rear of the building. Car 2 Fire Suppression Deputy Chief Paul Quaranto ordered a 2nd alarm at 8:04 a.m. Second Alarm companies included Ladder 2, Squad 5, Engine 4 and Engine 1. Command staff of Car 1 (Chief), Car 4 (Safety), HI and Car 3 are also all on scene. En­ gine 4 served as the Rapid Intervention team. The owner's dog was also rescued.

Pickup Crashes Into Waltham Reservoir FITCHBURG FIRE DEPARTMENT

Quick In te rio r A tta ck Contains Bedroom Fire in Downtown Fitchburg FITCHBURG, MA - On April 4th, Group 4 companies re­ sponded to a reported residential fire in the downtown area, where occupants had safely evacuated after noticing smoke coming from a locked bedroom. First-arriving crews encoun­ tered heavy smoke and fire showing from a second-floor win­ dow. Firefighters rapidly deployed multiple attack lines, secured a water supply, and used an aerial ladder to access the roof. Crews achieved a quick knockdown and conducted extensive overhaul to check for extension, successfully con­ fining the fire to a single bedroom. Residents were displaced as a result of the incident. No injuries were reported. The de­ partment also acknowledged the assistance of the Red Cross and neighboring communities.

occupant of the vehicle was out of the pickup truck and back safely on shore. WFD confirmed this report and Engine 2's crew initiated pa­ tient care. The driver was then eval­ uated by Armstrong Ambulance crews and transported to Lahey Hospital.

Engine 7 and Engine 7 Boat re­ sponded along with Engine 8 and the Cambridge Watershed trailer.

along with Central Station crews assisted in deploying the contain­ ment booms and absorbent pads around the semi-submerged vehi­ cle. Cambridge Watershed and De­ partment of Environmental Protection (D.E.P.) officials were notified.

The Cambridge Fire Dive Team was requested to respond to assist in the vehicle recovery. Medic 2 and Medic 3 also responded during this portion of the operation. The vehicle was successfully removed.

M ulti-V ehicle Crash on Route 2 Leaves One Dead, Several Injured LANCASTER, MA - On March 22nd, Lancaster Fire and Police responded to a serious multi-vehicle crash on Route 2 eastbound, where initial reports indicated a collision with un­ known conditions. Upon arrival, crews confirmed a three-vehicle accident involving two SUVs in a head-on collision, with a third ve­ hicle sideswiping the scene shortly after impact.

First responders conducted a rapid assessment, locating one un­ responsive driver with life-threat­ ening injuries, two occupants with serious injuries, and a fourth pa­ tient with minor injuries. Addi-

Two patients were transported to UMass Memorial Medical Cen­ ter in Worcester, while another was taken to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced deceased due to the severity of their injuries. A fourth patient was transported for evaluation of minor injuries.

During the drill, Engine 622 secured a hydrant and supplied water to Ladder 651, simulating fireground conditions where multiple units must operate seamlessly together.

Fitchburg firefighters joined the District 8 Technical Rescue Team for a hands-on training exercise at Great Wolf Lodge, focusing on complex confined space rescue operations. Crews worked through realistic scenarios involving a trapped victim, utilizing rope systems and coordinated techniques to safely complete the rescue.

2nd A larm S tru ck as Heavy Fire Tears Through Groton Home GROTON, MA - Groton firefighters arrived at this large barn/house on April 19th to find heavy fire showing and already extending into the attic. Command struck a 2nd alarm, bringing in mu­ tual aid to the scene and to cover. Companies maintained a defensive operation until the heavy volume of fire was knocked down enough to go to an offensive operation. Companies remained on scene for several hours overhauling and checking for extension.

Fully Involved Camper Fire in Waltham WALTHAM, MA-Waltham's 911 center received a call for a bus fire on Spruce Street on April 27th. Squad 5 and Ladder 2 were dispatched. Upon arrival, they found a camper fully involved.

A primary search found no one in the vehicle. Deputy Bob Lahey requested Engine 1 to respond and take a hydrant at Adams Street. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to extin­ guish the fire. The State Fire Marshal was requested for the possibility of arson.

West Boylston Crews Handle Two Calls in 24 Hours WEST BOYLSTON, MA — April 16th-17th — Over the course of a day, Group 1 of the West Boylston Fire Department dealt with several situations. Crews arrived on April 16th when a car pulled off the road because of a reported medical problem. After being assessed, the op­ erator was sent to a nearby hospital. Units were sent to the Dairy Queen area on Route 12 on April 17th in response to a motor vehicle rollover involving a reported entrapment. The operator was extracted from the car by firefighters. After being assessed on the spot, the patient was eventually discharged.

The author has a colorful back­ ground beginning at an early age.

He has served as a volunteer and paid firefighter in the fire service and presently is a lieutenant in the Denver, Nebraska Fire Depart­ ment. The book features 350 sep­ arate firehouses, all of which were active when photographed.

Many are unique and historic.

The book also features interior and apparatus shots, some fire photography and some street scenes to illustrate the perspec­ tive of the neighborhoods in which they are. There are 22 chapters plus an index. The chap­ ters include West Coast Fire­

houses (a full chapter), and then separate chapters of San Fran­ cisco, Oakland, Los Angeles City and County. Separate chapters cover the Los Angeles City and County Fire Departments. County Station 127, which was the one that the television show “Emer­ gency” used, is in this book. A full chapter features Western U.S. Firehouses with separate chapters on Colorado firehouses and the Denver Fire Department. Two pages are dedicated to Midwest Firehouses, followed by full chap­ ters for Chicago, St. Louis and De­ troit. Chapters on Southern U.S. Firehouses, Florida Firehouses are next, followed by Eastern U.S. Firehouses, including Boston and Cambridge, MA., and Baltimore, MD. The District of Columbia takes up a chapter. There is a Fire­ house introduction for the FDNY featuring information about the five boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. Photos of stations in all but Staten Island are featured.

Four pages take up firehouses in Canada. All photos are color and of excellent quality. Many have apparatus in them but there is no information about the vehicles, as this is strictly a firehouse book. I have one lame remark to make and that is one of the New York City boroughs is named “The Bronx”, not just “Bronx”, but the author not being from New York is ex­ cused for not knowing this. For the price, this is an excellent book and the reader will be well pleased perusing over it.

Garage Fire Involving Pool Chem icals Prompts HazMat Response in Great Rarrington GREAT BARRINGTON, MA - On April 18th, Great Barrington firefighters quickly contained a fully involved garage fire on Cot­ tage Street that involved a signifi­ cant quantity of chlorine and other pool chemicals, prompting a pre­ cautionary hazardous materials re­ sponse.

Crews arrived within minutes to find the garage heavily involved and immediately stretched a handline, knocking down the bulk of the fire using tank water before securing a hydrant supply. Due to exposure concerns and limited initial staffing, a first alarm was requested.

During suppression, firefight­ ers identified hazardous pool chemicals inside and around the structure, leading to the notifica­ tion of state environmental and HazMat teams. As a precaution, nearby residents were advised to remain indoors and close windows.

Upon evaluation, conditions were deemed stable and the HazMat re­ sponse was scaled back.

The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes, with crews remaining on scene to mon­ itor for any environmental impact and check nearby homes for poten­ tial hazards.

Mutual aid departments as­ sisted at the scene, while additional

units covered the district. No in­ juries were reported and no other structures were damaged. The cause of the fire remains under investiga-

tion and is not considered suspi­ cious.

Designing and Building Training Props IN THE FIRE ZONE JOSEPH CEA

Building training props is part of firefighting. Whereas that is certainly a commonality be­ tween all departments the im­ plementation of what props are built and how they are built etc., varies considerably and is as unique as each depart­ ment. Defined training props are specialized structures that simulate conditions, obsta­ cles, and hazards of real-world emergencies.

Props can teach and reinforce essential skills like forcible entry, search/rescue, mask confidence, ventilation, and hose handling. Obviously, a number of factors influence prop construction. These would include department fi­ nances, location (urban vs rural), the presence of a junior firefighting program and the types of calls to name a few.

The first and most important consideration when building training props is firefighter safety. This is non- negotiable.

NFPA1400 is set to replace in­ dividual standards of 1402 and 1403 and do provide training safety guidance although they are more specific to live fire drills. Because safety is para­ mount there are several props that should be purchased (as opposed to building them) such as any gas emergency/hazmat simula­ tions, a forcible entry door and flashover/burn simulators to name a few. When talking about prop safety you must also consider placement and set up relative to safety hose lines and possibly having an EMT on site.

To start, building a prop where safety is arguably more vital would be a maze. Firefighters navigating a maze are typically blacked out (which simulates smokey conditions) and must crawl to safety through a se­ ries of narrow channels, turns and stairs while on air. They may also experience wires or other obstacles within the maze that can also cause anx­ iety.

A well-built maze will have in­ structors having access to fire­ fighters at all points throughout the maze. This is because mazes are frequently used in firefighter 1 courses and for junior firefighters.

Being inexperienced and more prone to needing guidance it is important that instructors be able to visually see, touch and talk to firefighters as they go through.

Props should also be relevant and purposeful for your de­ partment. There are some props that fit this description across the board such as an escape window or the afore­ mentioned maze. Another all­ purpose prop is the disentan­ glement box which is simply an 8 x 4-foot box with bars, wires and other obstacles throughout. In spite of the short distance, it is still an ex­ cellent method for teaching firefighters how to untangle themselves or not get tangled in the first place and not press the panic button.

With all that said there are also props that are relevant based on the types of calls your de­ partment typically gets and/or the types of structures that are in the community you serve.

For example, if your district has several office buildings constructing a Denver drill prop may be in order. Even if your district does not warrant this kind of prop a mutual aid district might so it’s important to coordinate with neighboring districts and departments.

Since any props are likely going to be built from the ground up that means that they can potentially be modi­ fied to allow to be more easily put together, taken apart and put away in storage. By all means if your department has the storage that is great. How­ ever, if space is going to be a problem, then again coordina­ tion is key. Combining the stor­ age issue and mutual aid one other point to consider is adding to any agreement would be the storage, access and use of any props. The first department I joined did not have a wall to train and qualify for bailouts but a neighboring district did and we routinely used that prop (as an aside New York State is the only

state that requires a bailout qualification).

The question then becomes how to obtain the materials for all the props you want to build.

If you are looking to buy new lumber financial approval may be the first step although most wooden props aren’t that ex­ pensive to build (under $300).

Consider asking for donations of materials as there may not be the need to buy. In my expe­ rience many local and chain hardware stores will jump at the chance to assist a local fire department full well knowing in the long run it also benefits them from a fire safety stand­ point but also from a public re­ lations angle as well.

Additionally, there are grants that will assist with purchasing new supplies the downside of which would be writing a grant application. Your town Dept of Public Works (DPW) may also be willing to donate a culvert tube for pack escape drills or as part of a mask confidence course. Don’t forget any online sites that advertise free sup­ plies - 1literally have 50 pallets at my house being used in var­ ious capacities all of which I have gotten free from Facebook Marketplace or Craigs List and all of which could be re-purposed to build a training prop. Last but not least simply keep your eyes and ears open as some departments clean house and get rid of stored un­ used equipment as their needs evolve and change.

BOSTON, MA — April 16th — Rodney Marshall was named Fire Commissioner #45 by the Boston Fire Department. Marshall has been with the agency for a long time and has held a variety of oper­ ational and administrative positions, including Deputy Chief. His ap­ pointment is the first time in the department's history that a Black firefighter has been appointed commissioner. His leadership, train­ ing, and experience in fireground operations were highlighted by department authorities as important elements. Marshall's takeover of operations, personnel, and community risk reduction initiatives throughout the city's fire department is a reflection of the organiza­ tion's ongoing evolution.

Attleboro Firefighters Battle Concealed House Fire on Rocklawn Avenue ATTLEBORO, MA - Attleboro Fire Department responded to a re­ ported chimney fire Thursday night, April 23rd, at approximately 10:25 p.m, at a residence on Rocklawn Avenue in Attleboro.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke throughout multiple rooms of the home, prompting the inci­ dent to be upgraded to a working fire. Al­ though no flames were visible at the scene, crews quickly determined that the fire had extended through concealed void spaces behind walls and between floors.

Using thermal imaging cam­ eras, firefighters worked to trace the hidden fire’s path and made several openings in walls and ceilings to access and extinguish the flames.

The fire was brought under control by approximately 11:30 p.m.

District Chief Gerry Brogan described the incident as a difficult operation due to the home’s loca­ tion away from the roadway and the limited access for crews. He noted that the absence of visible flames made it especially challeng­ ing to locate the seat of the fire, re­ quiring extensive overhaul work to ensure the fire was fully extin­ guished.

National Grid responded to the scene and secured utilities to the

property. The department’s Fire In­ vestigation Unit remained active in determining the cause of the fire.

Firefighters stayed on scene until approximately 1 a.m. while mutual aid departments from Norton Fire Department, North Attlebor­

ough Fire Department, Seekonk Fire Department, Central Falls Fire De­ partment, and Pawtucket Fire De­ partment provided station coverage for the city during the incident..

East Brookfield Crews Handle Bay Path Road MVA EAST BROOKFIELD, MA - When a single-car motor vehicle ac­ cident involving one occupant was reported on April 10th, the East Brookfield Fire Department responded to the Bay Path Road location. When units arrived, the car was off the road and the driver was already out. There were no injuries, according to early accounts. In addition to checking the occupant and conducting a scene assessment, the crews made sure there were no hazards like fluid leaks or road hazards. EMS and po­ lice officers helped with scene safety and assessment.

Fuel Tanker Rollover Causes Spill and Road Closure in Falmouth FALMOUTH, MA-Around 10:00 A.M. on April 23rd, a tractor trailer loaded with gas tipped in the Speedway gas station on RT 151 and Sandwich Road. Falmouth Engine 6 responded. There was some gasoline leaking, which they contained. The Fuel Recovery Team also responded.

Highway 151 was closed for several hours.

Garage Fire Q uickly Knocked Down, Home Saved in Falmouth FALMOUTH, MA - On April 15th, firefighters contained a garage fire that began extending into a single-family home on Club Valley Drive, preventing further damage to the residence.

Crews arrived to find heavy fire in the attached garage pushing to the exte­ rior and into the home. A rapid initial attack brought the garage fire under control, allowing in­ coming units to focus on the interior and attic spaces.

During a search, a guinea pig was safely rescued from the second floor. Extensive overhaul was com­ pleted in the garage and attic areas, including around a wooden chim­ ney.

No injuries were reported, but the home was left uninhabitable due to smoke damage. The cause remains under investigation.

Second-Alarm Fire Damages Multi-Story Home in Newton NEWTON, MA - On April 20th around 10:00 A.M., Newton Fire received a call for a house fire at 210 River Street.

When firefight­ ers arrived, they found smoke and fire coming from the 2nd floor of a two-and-a-halfstory dwelling.

Shortly after, a working fire was transmitted.

The fire extended to the 3rd floor and a second alarm was transmitted. Waltham, Watertown and Boston also operated at the fire. One firefighter was hospital­ ized with unknown injuries.
