ROTARY CONNECTS THE WORLD My Friends in Rotary, Welcome to November, with Christmas just a few short weeks away! I know that many of you are already working towards projects such as Christmas Wrapping, Trees of Joy and Christmas Tree sales, to name a few, and know their logistics will all be coming together over the next few weeks – very exciting! By the time you read this newsletter I will have had the chance to share a meeting with 50 of our clubs and get to know you just a little better. Your achievements and community involvement never cease to amaze me – such a pool of talent and muscle and solution to myriad shortcomings in our world. Well done to everyone and thank you all for the hospitality. And thank you for your very generous donations to the national Indigenous Health/Purple House project we are running nationally across all Districts – wonderful support! October was Economic and Community Development Month and it was also the month of so very many projects to support our projects both locally and globally.  Oct 24 was End

Thank you all so very much for contributing to the collection of around $150,000 in funds towards the campaign in our district alone. It is not very often that you can get 4 DGs together at once, or up to 8 members of the GTrain together, which we managed a few times thanks to visiting DG from New Zealand.

Oct 25-27 saw the partnership between Great Northern Brewing Company and Bendigo Bank deliver a new platform for fundraising towards the drought appeal in our local pubs. Funds are being channelled directly to the 2 Districts so heavily affected by the drought for distribution to those in need. So thank you to all who participated in this event, and in ongoing events to support our water-starved farmers.

Oct 27 was our traditional Graffiti Removal Day, with many teams out in support of public events to rid our communities of this menace. Thank you to team everywhere for the efforts and paint drips acquired on the day, which thankfully was a little cooler than the previous week! 

The month also included celebrations such as the launch of Days for Girls at Richmond, with an excited group including a Corporate Social

The end of October saw celebrations in our Indian communities with Diwali and Deepavali celebrations. I was delighted to enjoy the event at Bella Vista Farm with D9675 DG Di North – so much colour and music and so many smiling faces enjoying the day – well done to all concerned. November is Foundation Month, and we kick it off with our traditional Foundation Dinner in conjunction with D9675. PDG Bruce Lakin and his team are doing a fabulous job ensuring that this even is an outstanding event as in previous years, so please book the table for your club and come along to support one of Rotary’s great causes. You would by now have had the chance to read the latest Rotarian Magazine, and the article on p53 titled “How to make your club irresistible” piqued my interest. The Governor of District 7820 looked at a serious review in her clubs, asking some hard questions of both current members and those who are no longer members, for a variety of reasons. Her review started with an outsider’s perspective on her club with questions such as:     

What would a newcomer see if they walked into a meeting? What does the room look like? Is the room easy to find? Does the seating arrangement work? What do we eat?

She then progressed to club activities with questions like:     

What are our projects? Are they ‘same old, same old’? Are they interesting for a range of people? How do we do fundraisers? Are we driving ourselves silly pushing tickets at the same audience?

12th November 2019: Meeting 1659 Toast: Tom Bennett - Board Nominations and Board Meeting November is Rotary Foundation month. It is the BEST month to make your personal and Club donations. As you know, your generosity helps Rotarians everywhere to do good in the world. Charity Navigator, the international charity monitor, continues to rate Our Foundation very highly as you can see from their website‌.

Our Global Scholar, Aarthi Sridharan, has completed her course of study and is now working to provide legal aid to refugee women. Thank you to RC Ryde who secured the grant to assist this young lady. The Westmead Hospital Eye Clinic is very thankful to RC Hills-Kellyville and RC MadrasCoromandel who have delivered Eye imaging equipment, helped by a grant from Our Foundation. This will assist in diagnosing eye treatment for young people. Great teamwork by these Clubs! Please be generous during Rotary Foundation Month and thanks for listening. R100 CENTENARY LOGO COMPETITION

12th November 2019: Meeting 1659 Toast: Tom Bennett - Board Nominations and Board Meeting

In 2021, Rotary in Australia and New Zealand celebrates our first 100 years of service – and we need a powerful, engaging logo to help build our story. So, we have created a Centenary Logo Competition to help make an impact. What creativity can we conjure that captures the heart and soul of our centenary? Separate designs for both New Zealand and Australia will be welcome. Or a design that covers both countries – a design that enhances Rotary’s broader branding. Everyone is welcome to enter – Rotarians, professionals, friends and family. And the designer’s story will be an important part of the logo’s launch. We are tapping into the passion and energy of volunteers who will be rewarded simply with heartfelt thanks acknowledged by Rotary leaders. That story will be part of our centenary story. The competition is now open and closes on December 15. This is a tangible chance to make a mark on history! SIMPLE SUCCESSFUL STRATEGIES / IDEAS / PROCESSES

At the Upper North Shore's Club President's Group Meeting on 10 October, each person present was asked to present one simple strategy, process or idea that has worked for their Club. The following is a summary : * Russell Croft from St. Ives. Varying the weekly meeting format with 4 different meeting types or venues each month. Examples included 1 breakfast meeting, a social meeting with minimal Rotary business, a meeting with a high profile speaker at Avondale Golf Club and a " normal" meeting at Canisius.. * Charlotte Weatherall from Hornsby / Ku- Ring - Gai Rotaract. A 1 minute presentation from a member on the topic of their choice or a 1 minute answering of a question. * Doug Reid from Wahroonga. A coffee club meeting at a coffee shop after their breakfast meeting's 8.30 am finish. Also having grandchildren visit a meeting. * Pam Pritchard from Turrumurra. Success of 3 on me plus hand writing a letter to prospective new members. * Tom Borg from Berowra. Involvement of the Club in Shaminda in Ethiopia and spreading the message to other Clubs. * Peter Kirkwood from Wahroonga and PCYC. The Rotary Youth Hub at PCYC, and PCYC as a Community Service and Social Club with a huge diversity of activities and groups. * Bruce Jacob from Epping. A jackpot raffle. Each of these have been successful at the respective Clubs, so it is worthwhile giving strong consideration to one or more of these. They are working !!
